I'm so excited for mine to arrive. I was somehow lucky enough to order one and get it shipped to me on the 3rd (thanks T-Mobile!). That being said I really hope they produce more of these devices quickly because it makes me sad to see scalpers getting away with selling theirs online for thousands more than it is worth.

I'm super concerned about the glass back. I've watched a ton of drop videos and it seems like it cracks pretty easily. I have nightmares about the 4 which if you dropped it once, it was done.

I fell asleep on preorder night since I'm on the east coast and staying up til 3am is not easy for me anymore lol Managed to order mine at 6am and still got launch day so t mobile must have had a crazy amount of stock. I thought for sure it would be sold out by then. I'm going caseless til rhinoshield comes out next month so gonna be tough but got phone insurance and it comes with Applecare+ so I should be ok for a week or two.

I've never put a case on my prior iPhones before, so I'm likely to keep that trend going, especially since I have opted for AppleCare.

BUT... IF one were looking to get a thin minimalist case, what are the current suggestions? Whether or not I get a case will primarily depend on how the gestures feel one handed. Hopefully the phone feels stable enough and the back glass provides additional grip compared the my regular 6.

Going with a Sena Ultraslim sleeve, which I used with the 3GS, 4, and 5. Once it breaks in, it's easy to get the phone in and out and keeps it protected in my pocket. This phone is too sexy to put in a case IMO, and Apple Care+ (comes with my upgrade program policy apparently) makes accidental damage pretty cheap to fix.

Does anyone still make aluminum or metal phone cases? I had a metal bumpers for my iPhone 4 and 5S that I really loved, but as far as I can tell all the major case manufacturers switched to plastic once the phone ballooned in size with the iPhone 6.

Probably, but keep in mind metal can be not great for heat dispersion from the back of the phone. Also it will block any wireless charging

I know they've improved the durability of the glass but I've definitely seen some 8s with shattered backs already. Someone posted pictures of a broken 8 that fell off of their lap. I usually don't rock a phone case but I think this time I'll make an exception. I will probably get the black leather one from Apple. It might not do the most but it will hopefully help if I do drop it which I really hope I never do.

Speaking of cases, anybody use the clear Caseology Skyfall? I saw it linked here and am considering it. I'd like a clear back case to show off this gorgeous phone, but I've never liked most of the clear cases I've tried in the past. Here's a link.

I ordered the parallax case but in my previous experience with cheap cases like these, the paint will rub off on the edges sooner or later. A lot of them are just white plastic painted.

I will probably end up with a speck presidio case later on.

Well yes, I'd probably be looking for another bumper-style case that doesn't have metal covering the back. I'm not sure if anybody ever made full-body cases that were entirely metal.

I've seen them, that's why I mentioned the heat thing. It was like the worst thing you could do to that poor phone

Also, I can't imagine stiff metal really absorbing much of the impact from a drop on concrete, and that's where those corner drops can crack the glass.

I'm UK Silver 256GB but I'm 28 Nov - 4 Dec. I got my order in on the Apple website at around 8.15am.

Apple Store UK didn't get much stock compared to other retailers. I got my 256GB for Nov 3 on Carphone Warehouse's website at 8:38am. They weren't sold out until like midday.

You should try and get one from John Lewis at 8am on Friday then cancel the Apple order if you're successful.

Cross posted from the pre order thread -

I'm not going to lie, after the largely negative reaction we saw after the keynote last month, I'm pretty happy to see lots of the positive comments in the reviews I've read so far this morning.

Seems like Apple knocked this one out of the park.

I'm gonna stick with the Apple order as I'm paying over instalments. Thanks though.

I bought this and another different kind. I forget which but someone linked it in the preorder thread. I had a Caseology for the SO's SE. It's quite nice, actually. That's why I decided to try this Skyfall one out.

Don't know if this has been mentioned or not, but Engadget's review video indicated that Reachability is still available on the X by swiping down on the home bar. It doesn't sound like it's enabled by default though.

When I used a metal bumper case, I left my iPhone on the trunk of my car and drove off. Thanks to Find My iPhone, I was later able to find it in the middle of the road undamaged. Surviving a fall of a moving vehicle was enough to convince me me of the case's utility.

I've had kind of a boring plastic Quad Lock case for the 6S Plus I bought last year.....hoping to get something that looks and feels a bit better this time around.

I guess I don't understand how Face ID is at all a compromise. This conspiracy of how Apple couldn't put fingerprint reader into the screen is a crazy narrative Samsung probably paid outlets to run and it's somehow working. People actually believe that nonsense. I'm sure they tried it but went all in on Face ID when they realized it's just better.

I also don't understand the fascination with how new tech has to do everything old tech does and then more and better. That makes no sense. Sometimes new tech will be better overall but without every advantage the old tech has. Cars don't have all the benefits of horses. A horse won't run into a tree. But that doesn't mean a car isn't overall better than a horse.

It's like how a smartphone doesn't last weeks on a charge like your Motorola RAZR. Well, who wants to go back?

Yeah, Techcrunch interviewed Dan Riccio (head of Apple hardware) today and he specifically addressed that BS:

"I heard some rumor [that] we couldn't get Touch ID to work through the glass so we had to remove that," Riccio says, answering a question about whether there were late design changes. "When we hit early line of sight on getting Face ID to be [as] good as it was, we knew that if we could be successful we could enable the product that we wanted to go off and do and if that's true it could be something that we could burn the bridges and be all in with. This is assuming it was a better solution. And that's what we did. So we spent no time looking at fingerprints on the back or through the glass or on the side because if we did those things, which would be a last-minute change, they would be a distraction relative to enabling the more important thing that we were trying to achieve, which was Face ID done in a high-quality way."

is the screen the same 'curved corners' as in other recent iphone 6 -> family?

wonder if a flat tempered screen protector can 'just' fit over the display area like for those.

I was listening to the new episode of Gruber's Talk Show and guest Jim Dalrymple was saying that the X will know you're looking at a webpage in Safari and won't dim the screen if you are. Kind of spooky but awesome. I imagine Apple will start integrating more of these contextual behaviors to improve QoL and efficiency.

I'm already excited by the feature that if I'm staring at my phone and a text or call comes in it doesn't play the sound at normal volume

The more I read reviews, the more I learn about stuff I wasn't aware of when I preordered that sounds great. I was just due for a new phone. Guess I picked the right time to upgrade.
