It feels like a slap in the face.
I already own pretty much all of those games on the WiiU and I will definitely not double dip.
First half year for Switch is looking more and more like a wasteland for me.

It had more exclusives in 2017 than other platforms. It's the 1st half od second year, let there be some ports.

Its shit

At this point i've almost literally only bought a switch for Zelda, which i didn't even have to do because that's a port too.........

Smash is probably gonna be a glorified port as well, and if it is, it'll be the first Smash game I deliberately didn't purchase on a Nintendo system I own

At this point all i'm really excited for is Metroid...which is actually the only reason I bought a switch (made a promise that if they announced MP4 i'd buy a switch)

It's actually not, I've been following, maybe like 1 person out of a 100, and this thread was made by 1 person, so, that doesn't equate to a bunch of people saying it.
And lol? You can literally look in this thread, a bunch of people defending it, the only "negatives" are from people bringing up the PS4.
Read the direct thread for maximum shitposting.

No. Having a lot of Ports has never been a problem. Obviously, some of the people saying "No" now didn't think so that back in 2014, but who cares?

Game development nowadays takes for goddamn ever, so I don't mind ports. The more the better.
When making big AAA blockbusters, yes. Indies have little problems pumping out games in a year or less most of the time. Development Cycles aren't universal, its a spectrum, some games take longer to make. It all depends on software, hardware, team size, and project scale.

Uh, yeah? like 90% of the games are ports at this point

Ports of Wii U games

Ports of PS3 games

Ports of DS GAMES are you fucking kiddin-

The switch being on the lower-end of the horsepower spectrum means that I really don't excuse Nintendo for having so few new IPs / new titles in their pipeline

Frankly, the Switch should have every Wii U exclusive worth talking about.
They shouldn't be stuck on a dead system. They deserve another chance on a succeeding console.

This situation was expected given the amazing 2017 Switch had (you can´t always have a few GOTY tier games on store) and how bad the Wii U did it in its lifetime. I just makes sense from a bussiness standpoint. I´m happy personally.

I'm totally on-board with them porting games. I'm not buying them all, but not enough people got to experience a bunch of great games so I'm glad they are getting the opportunity to on Switch.

For me, to actually want to buy them, they have to have significant upgrades, i.e. the DX versions of games they have been putting out. Mario Kart is a good example: had all the DLC included, a few new characters and Karts, 2 weapons and ran at 1080p. That's a good upgrade imo and I'm in for that price.

Hyrule Warriors I won't be buying though. I bought the Wii U and 3DS version. Put in over a hundred hours on it accross both versions. This is basically the HD version of the 3DS version. I have FE Warriors now which easily will fill that grindy, mashy gameplay fix.

I expected and endorse it.

1) These games are awesome and deserve a chance to really show what they can do. Wii U definitely scuppered their potential.
2) They should look better due to the added muscle of the Switch, and more importantly, the bonus of full range RGB, which Wii U did not have.
3) Portability gives any previously console-only game a new lease of life.

Bring me more Switch ports.

I would be down for:

- Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
- Metroid Prime Trilogy
- Xenoblade Chronicles
- The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
- Tatsunoko vs Capcom

Maybe a few more, too. Easy money for Nintendo and third parties.

Isn't this basically confirmed? It's the only 3D Zelda without a remake. (Except BOTW obviously)

If anything, porting to switch is the first time a port actually adds something dramatic.

Portability.

So the fact that there are a bunch of games you couldnt play anywhere, that you now can, is always a good thing

Its to be expected because 3rd party publishers would logically be cautious coming off of the Wii-U and waited to see how the Switch would do. Now that its a smash success, they need time to make original content for it. In the meanwhile, here comes everything anyone can shoehorn onto the system! Since this means a lot of 360/PS3 games going portable, its hard for me to hate this reality.

Seems like most of the persons here didnt read the OP or even the thread title.
Ports are not the problem.
The lack of new games is the problem.
Specially coming from the lack of games that Switch predecessor was left.
Nintendo still strugling with HD development.
I ve pointed that on GAF time and I also believe that here at ERA.
When you look back at how WiiU last years were and look at Switch first year clearly there is something wrong.
Zelda and some popular ports blinded a lot of folks with all the hype around Switch release and bought Nintendo some time to hide the lack of new titles...the sad thing is that even with this time Nintendo wasn't ready to show new games.
Mhmm. I don't think it's a problem just yet. It's not even a year yet and we have a new Zelda, Mario, Splatoon, and so on. And this direct only finishes the Switch's first year. But by then we should have a new direct showcasing new games, not to mention we know we have other big titles (Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4) on the way.

So no. There is no signs of struggling and we see third parties are jumping on board like wildfire. So Nintendo is in a very good position.

I have, it's just a few vocal people. For the PS4, it was like every other comment.

I don't get it? Are you not looking in this thread? As I said before, the PS4 had almost every other comment shitty on it, this, this is nothing.
Maybe it's because people realized it wasn't a big deal with the PS4 and this happens with literally every console since the start of the PS360 gen and this shit sorts itself out after a few years

Also the first year of the Switch was far stronger than the PS4, so there's probably more leeway given

It's good for people who missed certain games, like Nintendo fans who missed out on Dark Souls.

It's good for certain games that just make sense mobile, like Stardew Valley.

It's good for lapsed Nintendo gamers, who missed Wii U games, like Splatoon.

Just as long as there are enough new games.

They announced 6 new games and 1 port for 2018 and beyond(beyond gonna be Pokemon).

Didn't even manage to get all the new games last year, totally fine with them strengthening their release schedule with ports.

This entire generation is too port heavy. This was the first year new games really hit their stride and it was Christmas number 5. Ports just suck up consumer money that should be going to new games imho. But Nintendo doesn't really have a choice. They still don't have much third party support outside of Indies.

What is there to feel? Games ported get more exposure. At the end of the day - it's all about the games not the system.

latest

And to be frank, all the "slap in the face" hysterics is the epitome of the entitled gamer cliche. Unless Nintendo is actively bricking your old console to force you to buy these no ports, then no one who bought the Wii-U is "losing out." Despite making some good games for it, the console bombed. Nintendo isn't obligated to keep those games gated to a dead console "out of respect."

I'm not buying a ton of Wii U ports, but I know the Switch has a whole new audience that didn't own a Wii U. I'll just get the ones I really want to play more of, like MK8 and Bayonetta. There's definitely games coming for people who don't want a bunch of ports, too.

I played every one of these games on Wii U, and plan to buy them again for portable play and because my Wii U isn't hooked up any longer.

Great, hope you enjoy them. Not everyone is willing to repurchase those at full price just to have them portable.

Before these ports became official, Switch owners had already been discussing how we want more of the Wii U library ported over. Why is is there such a controversy now that the ports are indeed happening?

Some people really love the portability of the Switch, as you can read in here. It's not as big of a deal to others, especially when it comes to repurchasing games at full price they already played or still currently have.

Looking at the "PS4 too", you're probably right.

When you actually consider that like 95% of people bought their PS4 to play 3rd party games, I would say the PS4 had a great year, because it actually had real 3rd party support.

I honestly can't respond to this in a way that won't just sound like an insult even if I'm just giving a frank assessment. I'll just ask you to reflect a bit and consider that your perspective may be a bit distorted, whether it's by time or ... something else.

Exactly, though I do think Nintendo has overcome its HD troubles by this point. The problem isn't that the console has ports. All consoles have ports, especially in their first year, we get it. The problem is when that's the only thing the console becomes known for. Instead of being known for fresh, new titles built specifically for it, it becomes known as a dumping ground for recycled content from other platforms, which isn't a healthy reputation to have. I'm not against ports, and I'm fine with Nintendo using Wii U ports to boost the Switch's appeal, because lets face it, nobody wanted a Wii U. The problem is that the first half of 2018 looks so dry on new content. Nintendo is a notorious secret keeper though, so they could surprise us by dropping more announcements for the first half of 2018 in the mix a little later. But if the first half of the year for Switch is just Kirby and Mario Tennis for new stuff, they better have stacked summer and holiday seasons because this isn't going to cut it if Nintendo wants to sell all those 20 million Switches this year.

For me personally, having over half of your output for the first half of the year (as of now) be years old ports with only like 3 actual new games (that I really don't have an interest in) is disappointing. Not saying it will be bad in terms of sales. I'm sure it will breathe new life into some of these titles But for me, there's nothing to get excited over for the first 5 or so months of this year right now

Why?

I know, they're old games—but in general, the way we consider older games to be worth less money is super strange IMO. If the Wii U version of Tropical Freeze had never been publicly released, would the Switch version be worth a higher price now?
That's a good point, but I was thinking more about the development costs. A port has maybe 10% of the budget the original game had (took the number out of my ass). And they sell it for 10$ less.

But I definitely see your point as well.

As long as it doesn't have an impact on new games I'm in favour of it. I'm not going to want to get many of these games again and for the ones I will (like Dark Souls) I might prefer them on better hardware but it's definitely nice to have the option.

It is interesting how different the perception of console games on a portable has changed since the Vita days though.

Yes and no.

Yes there's a lot of ports.

No it's not a big deal because I've got plenty of other shit to catch up on. I only bought like a half-dozen Switch games last year and if that's the case in 2018 that's fine and dandy.

Hyrule Warriors seems like a good thing to port because now all the 3DS-exclusive content is on a system that can actually run the game.

Heres another way to look at it

They got through MK8, Pokken, Bayo Series, Hyrule Warriors, Tropical Freeze in less than 2 years

Did a new Splatoon and Yoshi

Whats left to port?

Pikmin 3
Captain Toad
Xenoblade X
TMS

Theres a handful of games left to port over and Switch has years of life ahead... I wouldn't trip honestly

I'am okay with it since so many people skipped the Wii U but it dosen't interest me personally since I have played already played every game they are porting.

While it sure would be nice to have more actual new original games, I don't think there can be such a thing as too many ports. The market is there, it's within a new environment (portable), and many people missed out on those gems mainly because the WiiU was so unattractive and a flop. And from those pubs' perspective, it's a sure-fire way to recoup some of the losses those games incurred on the Wii U. It's win-win for everyone, so bring on the ports! ... Although some new original games sure would be nice!
