Thanks to the NPD Group and VentureBeat for the breakdown.

https://venturebeat.com/2018/01/18/...ds-the-hardware-pack-in-a-3-29-billion-month/

General stats from the NPD report for December 2017
  • Total: $3.29 billion (up 10 percent from $3 billion in December 2016)
  • Hardware: $1.27 billion (up 27 percent from $997 million)
  • Console software: $1.24 billion (up 2 percent from $1.22 billion)
  • PC software: $40 million (down 17 percent from $48 million)
  • Accessories: $735 million (flat from $734 million)
Video from Mat Piscatella, NPD Analyst - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbkjeOT-gdg&feature=youtu.be

Overall

It looks like a lot of folks treated themselves to a Nintendo Switch for the holidays last month. The video game industry in December was up 10 percent year-over-year, generating $3.29 billion thanks mainly due to hardware sales, according to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group.

Software

Software spending was up 1 percent from December 2016, reaching $1.3 billion. After Activision's Call of Duty: WWII's immense month in November, it's unsurprisingly still at the No. 1 spot on the charts.

"Call of Duty: WWII was the best-selling game in December, as well as for the year," said Piscatella. "December 2017 is the eighth consecutive December that a Call of Duty franchise release has topped the sales chart."

Activision Blizzard was the highest earning publisher in 2017, though more folks spent their dollars on Nintendo games in December.

Hardware & Accessories

Hardware generated $1.3 billion in December, up 27 percent year-over-year and driven mainly by the Switch. As previously mentioned, it became the best-selling console in its first 10 months.

[...]

"Over the first 50 months in market for each console, the combined hardware installed base of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One now exceeds that of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 by 18 percent, and that of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox by 4 percent," said Piscatella.

[...]

Despite the growth in software and hardware, the accessories category remained largely unchanged year-over-year. It earned $735 million in December, with consumers shifting their focus from "toys-to-life" (such as Nintendo Amiibo) to cases and organizers.

There are lists of best selling games of 2017 for all four platforms too.

Battlefront 2 looks to have had a strong performance overall.

Of the top 10, seven are service games, and the other three are from Nintendo.

Nintendo had a very, very good December.

Even Xenoblade Chronicles 2 made the top 20 relatively comfortably lol.

if Pokemon was combined, where would it chart? given how low both versions are, I guess the sales were really frontloaded

The DS4 keeps leading accessory sales. I would think the XB1 controller is the most preferred.

Nice to see Xenoblade Chronicles 2 place at 16 overall. I hope it's close to selling a million world wide.

Surprised by Xenoblade 2 at 16. Skyrim seems to have done well on Switch, despite the high asking price. Hopefully Dark Souls will perform even better on Switch!

An absolute beast of a franchise. To think some doubted a switch port would sell. Everyone loves Mario Kart!!!

Well done Need For Speed Payback, best performing racing game of the month (outside of the beastly MK, of course).

Surprised GT Sport didn't even place in PlayStation's own top 10...

Pokemon is cheaper, they are 13/14th if the ranking was based on units. I'm guessing combined they'd be over >750K

From the prediction thread, at minimum 3DS sold 1.25M units of software Pokemon US/UM likely makes more than 50% of those software sales, hence the question I asked Mat, he could probably confirm that it's over 50%:

3DS is 41% of Switch's total software so it's possible it sold >1.25M. Granted it's possible that software figures might be smaller than what I envision but there are other games on the Switch that would probably allow it to hit 2.9M units of software for December.
If 3DS software sold >1.25M during December its possible that >50% of those sales are Pokemon US/UM since there weren't any notable games releasing on the system in the past months. Last month Pokemon US/UM were positioned 10th and 11th.

In terms of hardware sales 3DS managed to sell over >700K in December. Compared to Japan where during December 3DS only managed 254K sales. I guess MatPiscatella was right that currently in the US Switch isn't having an adverse effect on any device currently. In Japan 3DS is already being replaced in the eyes of consumers, but we gotta keep in mind that there 3DS has reached saturation point. This year 3DS only sold 1.6M in Japan, in the US it seems that 3DS might have passed that number since only in December they sold >700K.

Go go Xenoblade. Took awhile, but it finally managed to chart on NPD. Switch doing great, and the industry as a whole looks very healthy.

shit, yea, I forgot. damn, I miss unit rankings. wish we got both, but I guess we only get one for narrative control (not that I blame them, they have good reason for shifting to revenue rankings)

Weird that Nintendo didn't mention Xenoblade in its PR then. Wonder what its numbers are like. Should hopefully be north of 200k.

Wow, PS4/X1 are doing very very well for themselves in keeping up and exceeding with previous generations.
