The only Cleopatra show that matters

You have given me reason to talk about this fucking show.
Because this fucking show y'all.

This is like within the first five minutes or so.

It is exploitative sci-fi trash. It has some of the most gaudy set + costume design you'll ever see. Like they don't try to hide it at all.

You might have noticed that I haven't really said a word about plot or anything and instead relied on an overabundance of gifs. But that is simply because Cleopatra 2525 needs to be experienced in order for yo- eh let's face it: The story is pretty much non existent, it is exploitative trash that is self aware but still leans heavy into the exploitation elements/tropes so it's not like that self awareness makes it better, it's not nearly the same quality of Xena or Hercules (which is the same programming block it was headed for). It's not even on the level of Jack of All Trades which this show was bundled with. The effects are pretty poor (even for its time), but still

It's too goofy not to love.

It's a shame that Great News is probably going to get cancelled because this episode is hilarious.

Props to Tracey Wigfield for making a fun spoof of social media and news coverage.

Brooklyn, NY
um

"Our show is an adventure story that centers on a young Cleopatra during the period of her life when she was exiled by her own brother and forced to be a scrappy outsider forging shaky alliances and acquiring powerful enemies, including the gods and monsters of Egyptian mythology vying for supremacy over the human race," Seitzman said. "It's also a love story about a young woman caught between two men, the fierce General Julius Caesar and his protege, the young, rebellious Centurion Marc Antony."

...

"Seitzman has done a stunning job of freeing Cleopatra from the boundaries of past productions and delivered on the true and vibrant real history of Cleopatra," di Bonaventura said.

Is/was Brooklyn nine nine big enough for them not to kill it outright between seasons or will they let it end by giving it another shorter season? I see the numbers for last year compared to even 3 years ago and I worry.

Who knows, since low rated shows get renewed all the time now, but I'd be fine with B99 ending after this season. It's had a long enough run.

Man, maybe Shawn Ryan is really a hack and The Shield/Terriers was a fluke. The latest episode basically has SWAT turning out to just be Chicago Code 2.0... and that was just a ripoff of The Wire. :p

This bums me out cause if they're doing a TV spinoff that probably means the Bad Boys 3 movie isn't happening.

But from what I remember reading before, neither wanted to return, so what would be the point, anyways? The movie shouldn't be made if neither Smith or Lawrence returns.

Joel McHale Lands Topical Weekly Show for Netflix
The actor, comic and former emcee of cult hit The Soup has landed a weekly, half-hour topical series for Netflix. The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale is designed to take a sharp, absurdist look at pop culture, as well as news around the world. In the lead up to its Feb. 18 global launch, the streaming giant is billing it as a "fast and funny distillation of everything people are talking about that week." The Lionsgate-produced series will feature celebrity guests, comedy sketches and insane clips form the world of sports, politics and celebrity.

McHale will also serve as an executive producer on the first batch of 13 episodes ordered alongside his longtime Soup head writer, K.P. Anderson. In a bid to maintain that topicality, the current plan is to tape each episode on Thursdays at Los Angeles' Sunset Bronson studio, with then roll it out that Sunday. McHale and Anderson will be joined by a handful of fellow EPs, including Bridesmaids, The Heat and Ghostbusters director Paul Feig, Jessie Henderson, Brad Stevens and Boyd Vico. The show will formally hail from Anderson's Pygmy Wolf Productions, McHale's Free Period Productions and Feig's Feigco Entertainment.

I wish someone would pay McHale to host E3 events and review games. His disinterest in games gives me life.

I'm in for The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale

He could see The Game Awards were some bullshit and an absolute mess so he gave the show what it needed to keep it watchable. He's an actual host and comedian.

'Cleopatra' TV Series From Michael Seitzman, Christina Davis & Lorenzo di Bonaventura Ramps Up At Freeform

I'm so going to laugh (and not even feel too bad about it) if this one makes it and the Black Sails creators one doesn't. Actually now that I think about it I think Sony was trying to get Denis Villeneuve to do a Cleopatra adaptation as well. She's pretty hot right now for a queen who has been dead for 2000 years.

noooo, what the fuck?! Another one? The Amazon one better come to pass first. I'd been really looking forward to seeing what Steinberg and Levine did with Cleopatra, considering what a phenomenal job they did with the women of Black Sails. Even the women in the supporting cast were better written and had better character arcs than most female leads! (Black Sails has ruined me on so many levels. Trying to watch new shows, and going, well, your female characters are okay, but they're no Max/Anne/Miranda/Eleanor/Madi.) Black Sails was also a show that gave the forgotten ones throughout history a voice: the LGBTQ community, women, women and men of color. In turn, it showed why these voices were silenced and forgotten. I'm so goddamn curious how that mindset will be applied to Cleopatra, and it seems like Levine is planning something similar - "a revisionist take on one of history's most misunderstood women, The Godfather in Ancient Egypt". GIMME.

Jeez, Great News approaching CW levels :(

It's like they know cancellation is on the horizon, storyline is wrapping up.

IT IS THE BEST G-DANG SITCOM I'VE WATCHED IN QUITE SOME TIME. Disappointing, the cast has a lot of fun.

I remember seeing that show on TV, but I never watched it. Is it as bad as Lexx?

I feel like Orphan Black gets progressively worse after the first season, but it still has its moments and for some reason I watched till the end. I guess I continued to enjoy any shenanigans with Allison despite wherever else the show was weak.

I love Allison. Hell I like all the characters, which is probably a big reason why ill keep watching even if the plot doesnt tickle my fancy (and S2 deffinately isnt so far)

I wasn't a big fan of the final season either. Felt weird and off, for me. But I did like the finale.

I think season 3 is the lowpoint, and it does get a bit better after that, but it never really returns to the highs/potential of season 1.

Fox has ordered its first pilots of the season — Our People, a single-camera comedy from Lee Daniels and Modern Family executive producer Vali Chandrasekaran; multi-camera comedy Rel starring Lil Rey Howery and executive produced by Jerrod Carmichael; and Mixtape, a musical drama from former Smash showrunner Josh Safran.

The formerly untitled Our People, from Endemol Shine, is based on the Israeli format Nevsu: A Young Multicultural Couple.

In Our People, written by Chandrasekaran, a man from a bombastic African family who doesn't have a word in their native language for "privacy" and his fiancée from a mid-western family try to build a normal life together. Though nobody can agree what that "normal" means.

Written/executive produced by Josh Rabinowitz & Kevin Barnett and Lil Rel Howery, Rel centers on Lil Rel, a prideful, self-made success who lives by the code to "always believe in yourself and great things will come," finds that attitude put to the test when he learns his wife is having an affair with his own barber. He tries to rebuild his life post-divorce as a long-distance single father on the West Side of Chicago who's on a quest for love, respect and a new barber.

Written by Safran, Mixtape, from Annapurna Television. is a romantic musical drama that looks at a disparate group of interconnected people in contemporary Los Angeles through the lens of the music that defines who they are. Mixtape captures the different stages of love, exploring if time can heal a broken heart and if love can withstand life's tragedies.

I'm now rewatching Cleopatra 2525 instead of posting in Ratsky's TV of the year thread (don't be like me, vote)

I forgot about sassy snake man:
rU0Ymo7.gif

God Cleo 2525 is so terrible.

edit: nvm it is high fucking art apparently
The two first episodes are directed by Greg Yaitanes, who did Banshee, Quarry and most recently Manhunt: Unabomber. I had to pause the second episode when I noticed his name to double check

He certainly has come far. lol

I think seasons 2 and 3 are the weakest of Orphan Black but I really enjoyed season 4 and season 5 is also good.
