Is there a car reveal timeline? Usually the teams reveal their new cars around this time but I can't find anything about it.

Edit:

Found this
Ferrari: February 22
McLaren: February 23
Toro Rosso: February 25

Sky report should be updated when they get the dates (table at the bottom of the page, to skip the text body ;) ): http://www.skysports.com/f1/news/12...1-in-2018-new-car-unveilings-and-launch-dates

For now, you only miss Mercedes, same day as Ferrari, Feb 22

OH sweet, thanks for the link.
This is my favorite time of the year for f1 when everyone starts breaking down the cars and speculating.

Sure is ! Piola's sketches of his glimpses at the cars are always a delight.
Let's not forget also the liveries beauty contest... and the mandatory-yet-meh "the new liveries on the historic chassis" artists renders ;)

Last year was amazing, especially Ferrari during winter testing and the sandbagging (slowing down in the straights), people didn't know if the pace was legitimate and then they turned up in Melbourne and won

Hope we get some surprises this year

There will be the usual mysterious Mercedes sandbagging, Ferrari could be fun to watch because they already said they either built a great car or a shit car since their designers are already so relaxed, Red Bull said they'll stop getting their car ready in like May and might turn up with more sensible times in testing, McLaren with Renault power (or lack thereof, we'll see) will be interesting to compare and then there's the big question if Toro Rosso will get any testing done at all.

Looks like they are bringing in a minimum driver weight of 80kg to combat most drivers having to be pushing so hard to stay crazy thin. Anyone under the limit will have ballast placed under the seat in specific locations.

Hulkenburg has cleaned up real nice as he's gotten older

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

On a separate note, the OT title is rather excellent!

I wonder if any of the taller/heavier drivers are suddenly gonna find a couple of tenths in 2019.

Peak height for modern drivers is clearly 1,74m - the height of Vettel, Hamilton and Schumacher.

David-Schumacher-F4-UAE-US-Racing.jpg

As the F4 UAE Championship prepares for its second round this weekend, they welcome four new faces, with one of them, David Schumacher making his racing debut. David is the son of multiple Formula 1 race winner Ralf Schumacher as he prepares for his first full season in ADAC Formula 4this year.

The young Schumacher will join the US Racing/Rasgaira Motorsports team that his father Ralf co-owns and runs in the ADAC series. It was announced that David will stay on for the rest of the season, joining Czech teammate Petr Ptáček.

Schumacher makes the step up after finishing as runner-up in the 2017 German Karting Championship. He's also made appearances in the CIK-FIA European Karting Championship, finishing thirteenth overall.

"This weekend is all about trying new things for me." said David. "While it would be great to win races it's also important to learn as much as I can about the handling of these cars, get used to the grip levels, practice my starts and just make sure I'm refining my driving as much as I can."

He took pole position in his first qualifying session at the Yas Marina Circuit, though lost out in the opening race to Olli Caldwell.

Glad something is being done about this, Hulkenberg has said that he feels underweight and would ideally put on some weight. Then we have had some drivers running without water bottle during races to save on weight. Rosberg in a fairly recent interview also said he had to stop cycling (during 2016 campaign) to avoid putting on any extra leg muscle/weight.

As far tallest driver, not sure about tallest of all time but Ocon Has to be up there. No pun intended. :P

Is that measurement of Hamilton official? In pictures with other people he always seems pretty small, and 1,74 is around average.

Honda's new engine boss (on right) says the opening 2018 spec PU is almost complete, power and reliability on the dyno way beyond that of yesteryear's, wants 6 months before being judged.

Given that the new engine is so much better, shouldnt he be judged on what he's produced regardless of what was there before?

It wouldn't inspire me if I had a partner come in - that is crucial to our success - and asks for half a year before he accepts accountability.

This will be their fourth year back in F1. Asking for 6 months is a bit rich here.

Clearly Toro Rosso doesn't have the budget to build a car that can handle such a beast.

They want six months before being judged? I feel sorry for Toro Rosso. This season is a write-off for them.

Toro Rosso was never the end goal here, it's RBR next year, this year is as much a test run for Red Bull than it is for Honda. I'm not sure why you guys thought STR would think they'd be instantly competitive?

The question isn't if Toro Rosso is going to be competitive (there's no way they're gonna end up in the top half of the grid the way things are shaping up with the bigger budget teams), the question is if they're going to have enough reliable runtime with the engine to actually get anything done.

the edge
Having only one team to run their PUs has always been a downside for Honda. After three years, I can't believe they're still touting that dyno shit, like it means anything.

In other news, Sirotkin made a pretty good deal.

Sirotkin's Williams deal a 'multi-year contract'

Speaking at a Williams-SMP Racing joint event in Moscow, Williams CEO Mike O'Driscoll said: "What we have with Sergey is a multi-year contract. We have a lot of confidence in Sergey.

"We never talk about the specific terms for any driver at any point, and that's common across many of the Formula 1 teams.

"But we can tell you it's a multi-year contract, so expect to see Sergey, in the years ahead, wearing the Williams uniform."

SMP Racing chief executive Dmitry Samorukov welcomed the deal.

"We knew that there was no point in signing a contract just for one year, in terms of Sergey's work with the team and with the car," he said.

"Our programme is designed for more than a year. We have very flexible terms in the deal, but it's definitely 'one-plus'."

Info from Dyno tesing doesn't mean shit out in the real world. If that was true we'd all have cars that're vastly more fuel efficient and reliable on the road right now. Same goes for F1; we aren't going to know how an engine is going to perform until it's up and running for all to see.

At least Honda won't forget that real cars cause vibrations this time, right? .... right?

T-cam should definitely stay, it's the only way to see things like the driver operating the steering wheel. If they're removing it then the only reason is to hide how ugly Halo looks up and close. ;)

The first 2018 spec PU isn't his work, it's the final development cycle of Hasegawa's stewardship which he shouldn't be judged on. Our Lord and Saviour Asaki will bare the fruits of his labour when the first seasonal upgrade is introduced. Look forward to it.
