Still gonna stick with headphone jacks thanks. Not going to risk being on a long train and having to hear crying babies and I'd rather not carry a dongle.

Yeah, I legit don't have this problem. The "dongle" is just a cable extension that's affixed to the cable that came with my wireless headphones, so it's not like I'm carrying anything extra and there's no real reason to ever detach it (not like I'm bringing extra headphones, but if that's your use case I guess I can see why).

But I haven't yet actually had to use that cable in the three or four years since I've gone wireless. The luxury of using over-ears is that you get several tens of hours of battery life and since you don't use them for that entire time, charging them up with a portable battery while they're in your bad eliminates any real danger of being left with an empty pair.

Anyone have experience with the new Moto X4? I'm on Project Fi w/ a Nexus 5X and I finally fell victim to the boot loop issue. Customer support was nice enough to upgrade me to the Moto X4 since I have the device protection, so I'm less nervous about taking the plunge on the X4. However, most reviews I've ready have said that's it's merely a decent phone.

I've really come to appreciate convenient features on some of these flagships, whether it's hardware or software. I can't believe I'm just now finally using apps edge on my phone now.

Before I was using swipable docks on Nova launcher. Using apps edge to access my most used apps is just more efficient and easier to handle. Now I don't think I would want to give this up going to another phone. It's good for handling for quick things like doing quick calculations as well.

When I had a Moto back up phone for a bit, I loved the way the notifications were set up. You picked up the phone and you would see your notifications on the black screen, then hold and swipe to preview or actually complete an action such as replying to a message. Wish Samsung just copied that feature instead of having an always on display.

If the iPhone X had something like this, it would be such a big upgrade. But we know that Apple is stubborn and won't even upgrade notifications.

I like the convenience of wireless headphones but pairing and battery life are definitely huge issues for me. Now, I understand that these things are less of an issue the more you spend on headphones. Higher quality headphones have better BT chips and depending on the form factor, bigger batteries. But while I use headphones every single day and don't ever leave my apartment without them, I only need them for podcasts and therefore couldn't care less about high-quality audio. That's why I always used pack-ins or similar cheap headphones for 15€. And today, when the battery of my shitty 40€ Philips BT headphones died during my lunch break, I was really glad that I had my wired headphones with me. Going full wireless is just not an option if you don't want to spend much on headphones.

I also don't want to support the war on a bit of thickness. Phones are already too thin and the excuse for removing the headphone jack seems to be yet more thinness.

Haha - I've never even spent close to that much money on a phone. I just don't use my phone in such a way that I need something that nice. It was basically the Moto X4 for me (either by purchase or replacement) or I was dropping Fi altogether.

It might not be on a black background but the iPhone X does raise to wake and gives you your notifications right then and there (while also hiding notification content unless it recognises you specifically). And it finally added tap-to-wake too for similar effect. It also has direct-reply from the lockscreen through force touch on a notification.

I have several issues with Apple's notification system, but these things aren't among them tbh.

Yeah, I'm just talking about a specific feature that Moto phones have that I want on any phone I use.

Apple should leverage AMOLED screen door things like this. They don't make efficient use of things they should. I expect for the bigger iPhone X, they'll finally implement multiwindow

LOL I found it funny how previous Xperia have headphone jack but no one cares but now it was some sort kind of killer features they missed or something. I Kind of wish to see the reaction if Samsung or LG decided to follow the leader.

Well the only reason I have a Samsung over a Pixel 2 is the headphone jack, so I'll just find another option should they remove it.

The only thing worse than companies removing the headphone jack are the idiots who somehow advocate for less choice. The hell is wrong with you? You love Bluetooth headphones so much, it works great on phones with headphone jacks. How brainwashed do you have to be to buy the Apple spin that you have to choose either/or?

As an owner of a phone without a headphone jack (Essential phone) I can definitely say that it's not a big deal to me and I easily got used to using the dongle, plus $20 Bluetooth headphones sound okay to me as I'm no audiophile.

However, it is without a doubt the type of feature that should only be on budget phones trying to save a few cents on manufacturing/licensing cost. I paid $170 so I'm not complaining but ask anybody if they would buy a flagship TV you without an HDMI port? It's nice to have wireless input/output but relying on it as your sole solution has no benefit to the user.

As someone that doesn't really care about audio quality and use bluetooth headsets most of the time, there are still plenty of issues with going BT.

  • Multidevices pairing and hopping around is a pain if you aren't in the apple w3 ecosystem.
  • Battery indicator is finicky in terms of support (was finally introduced to stock android in 8.0) and accuracy (all my shit seems to go from 50% to low battery). Gotta shell out the big bucks for some that have apps.
  • the hottest thing of 2017, the switch doesn't support BT headsets for some reason so thats another hassle.
  • 99% of BT headsets still use microusb, so another cable to bring around.
Which is why having both is ideal. My note 8 probably got the best BT ive had on a phone (pixel 2 still gets a bit flakey at times, and randomly turns off BT for no reason). When my headset dies suddenly, I still have some wired buds around just in case.

I didn't mind the lack of head phone jacks in the beginning, but after almost losing the adapter multiple times I got fed up.

And bluetooth get a clumsy when you carry multiple phones.

The mid range phones will most likely still have the jack so they will probably be more popular for people with wired headphones. Like me.

Samsung had that at-a-glance style feature first. it was in the S3/Note2, etc... Moto and others got it later and Samsung moved on to AOD.

Damn, would have been nice to have it as an option. I don't need the phone display on all the time, even if it's minimal. I mean it just makes more sense for the phone to activate when you touch it because it's that when you intend to use it...

Raise to wake is a good feature. It's surprising that that king of sometimes superfluous features, Samsung, doesn't have it.

Same for double-tap to wake. They sort of have it by letting you double-tap on a notification icon on the AOD, which brings you to that app, but I'd rather have regular double-tap to wake and I really don't understand why they don't have it.

I don't remember Samsung having any at a glance feature back then, but it's been years. As for AOD, that's just a copy Active Display/Moto Display.

You mean Nokia Glance?

Anyone know how to reset the saved words for the Google Keyboard?

Mine is kinda broken in that it's suggesting me typos that I accidently force added but I can't find the reset option in the settings.

Did they get rid of that?

go into Gboard settings > Dictionary > Delete learned words

or you can always touch and hold the suggestion as they appear and delete them from there

Why not connect the dongle to your fav pair of headphones?

Use bt on one phone and connect via 3.5 when needed on the other(if the headphone has a jack?)

I bought a $50 Moto E4 and returned it 24 hours later because of all the things it lacked. I need a compass and all the modern sensors. For $50 ($30 at Wal-Mart) it is more than capable for someone that wants a smartphone to have one. Build quality is great for the price and the display is more than adequate. My main issue is the overall footprint of the device. It's too big for what you get. It would be fine if the camera didn't suck and offered raw support.

Just ordered an XZ1C unlocked for $464 off Amazon. It's not as bad of a ripoff on paper as it looks compared to the iPhone SE. You get the flagship SOC, bigger display, possibly brighter display, wide angle front facing cam, and newest OS. You save over $36 to boot. Can't wait to review this. Hope it doesn't disappoint as my first official tissue flagship in years.

You will not regret it.

Anyone know why my S7 vibrates at me sometimes when I pick it up? Is it trying to tell me something?

It likes you. Pet it some.

Can't believe I've been putting up with Gmails threaded conversation crap for so many years, the amount of emails I've missed from getting lost in a stupid collapsed thread.
Outlook works exactly as I need it.

Never used the Moto X4, but I did use the Moto G4 Plus which is lower end than the X4. Honestly, it ran better than the Nexus 5X (I owned and used it for about 1-2 months). I always felt the 5X was a little slow and lagged if you opened the camera or Google Maps.
