Ps4 firmware 4.05 has officially been "hacked", complete with ps2 emulation unlock.

I am amazed at this, I though it wouldnt be possible but according to this spanish site, you can now fully load/dump ps4 files into .pkg and load them too on firmware 4.01. Supposedly a hack for firmware 5.01 is on the way too.

What I find most interesting is the unlock of ps2 emulation.

EDIT: I got the version wrong, its actually 4.05. And also I dont know if this violates any rules of the site. If it does, please lock/delete thread.

Holy shit. I wasn't sure if PS2 emulation would be possible. Great to see it.

I'm just disappointed my PS4 is on 4.50.

Yeah, some combination of hacks including PS4Hen allow for packages to be installed.

Can't wait for the ban whining.

Have they tried PS1 ISOs?

Eurogamer reported several years ago that Sony was working on PS1 and PS2 emulation. I'm curious if the PS1 emulator is there too.

I would bet it is possible, I see no reason why not, also everything sony has natively played ps1 games (except ps4 for now, but ps2, ps3, psp and vita do).

That's cool, I kept my old PS4 as back up when I got a pro at launch. Would love to use it to play PS2 games, awesome!

It depends, for sony it can be both, since ps4 hardware sales might see a raise in some third world/emergent countries where people cant buy games because they are usually 2x the price so they dont buy the hardware (this in no way justifies loading backups/doing piracy tho), it could also mean bad news because now people can pirate software and that would definitely make a dent on software sales and third party developers.

Not surprised at all, PS3 (all models including Slims and Super Slims) had a complete and working emulator which worked flawlessly with all PS2 games. It was unlocked and released by some dev on jailbroken consoles. I don't know why Sony never released it to public though. Don't know anything about licencing, could that be the reason?

So wait....Sony is purposely not releasing the PS2 emulator that every PS4 has? And probably the PS1 emulator that more then likely exists?

When you open the door for custom firmware, it will be possible to update the firmware with another CFW which is based on a newer version. The only requirement is that your console is on 4.05 when you hack it. That's how PS3 online games continued to have cheaters even after the exploit was patched.

Has jackshit to do with licensing, it's just pure greed. They could allow you to play any PS2 discs. They could allow you to play your PS2 classics on your PS4. The only reason they don't is money.

This is a really dumb question.

You can very easily make isos from your PS2 discs.

As far as I can tell, it does not support discs, because you need to package up the iso as a pkg file, which can then be installed.

Maybe they will figure out a way to add disc support later.

It is extremely asinine to suggest that people copying games they have bought from one format to another format are pirates.

This hasn't happened with henkaku on Vita. There were bans at one point, but IIRC, they were because NEAR wouldn't work but consoles kept sending requests, so the hammering was seen as DdoS attempts.
I guess Sony just doesn't care about Vita.

Was it really a completely working emu? last time I read a few years ago certain games work but not every; infact many didn't. There was a compatible listed created by the scene. Ps2 games were tested before they release on psn, they could be just an iso rip but sony still have to make sure it works first before they sell it on psn. I imagine it is also the same case for ps4. Infact, same on xbox one, they don't just recompile every single games they want without properly tested.

Sorry, that's not how I meant it.

Yeah, obviously people who are backing up their own games to use aren't pirates.

It would just be easier to download then do that. Is torrenting a game you own considered piracy?

If you've been updating your PS4 routinely, you are *way* ahead of 4.00 .. you're on 5.05 or something now.

For most normal users this won't be useful until a firmware downgrader is also introduced.

The PS3 emulator could run a huge majority of the library, only some specific games would not work. For example, FFXII International Zodiac runs 100% flawlessly without being officially "supported" ... played it myself.

Also people were playing Persona 4 on the PS3 more than a year before Atlus officially released the PS2 verison on PSN.

The only 'enhancements' you could do on the emulator was a smoothing filter which added a slight blur for the jaggies, there were no resolution enhancements in it at all.

How did you get all of that from the poster you quoted? He or she asked a simple question. Maybe they're not as knowledgeable on how to do this stuff so they simply tossed out a question. No need to be condescending.

Blizzard had an oversight and stored everything on the save file instead of server side like most looters do now (i.e. Warfare, Destiny, Fortnite, etc..).

Yeah, but I thought that they were somehow ported for PS4, not that they did run directly on an emulator that was already installed on the firmware...

My point is that if the emulator is working and it's already on my PS4, why I can't play my Devil Summoner 2 physical copy? The hackers were able to get working Klonoa 2 and Shinobi, so I don't see why I have to wait for Sony to upload the games on the store.

I guess we need to see first how many games are really compatible with the emulator.

Awesome, can't wait for PS5 so I can use my PS4 as a PS2 emulator:)
