But there's always a new model coming within the year?

You're going to be disappointed if you're waiting for the notch to disappear this year. There are physical limitations at play. Maybe within five revisions if we're lucky.

Yeah which is why I won't be picking this up. There's no reason to now lol
Hopefully the next one fixes the weird notch. It was one of the few things holding me back.
I like the notch. The top remains symmetrical in its design, without compromising the "full screen" nature of the phone. I'd rather have the notch than a black bar covering the whole top.

There will always be a newer model of anything...so with your logic, why buy anything. If it's an upgrade, just go for it. I went from IPhone 5 to the X and do not regret it. I kept waiting saying to myself "something else will just come out"...well 4 years went by and I should have just upgraded earlier!

True but they don't usually discontinue the old models after a few months. That's my point. Seems like they're dropping the X pretty fast so I mind as well just wait.
It won't be in a few months, they'll stop making it in the summer so that they can start making the XI which will probably just be a faster version of the X. They'll discontinue it when the the the new iPhones come out in late September.
I.e. they'll release the iPhone XI and iPhone 9 iPhone 8 and 7 will become the cheap options. Probably don't want to sell the X as well to keep the number of SKUs down.

Totally makes sense. Sorry for the misunderstanding. When I heard "discontinued" I immediately assumed it had problems lol
Didn't even factor in that they would want to limit models.

My screenshot functionality is completely broken this week. The little box doesn't come up in the corner and the screen doesnt even flash during a screenshot. It just comes up in photos. Also, since I have iCloud Photos turned on all the photos are immediately in the cloud and dont open sometimes/require a wait to load. It's kinda maddening. '

It feels like the bugs are being ignored now.

What is this nonsense about them discontinuing the phone in mid-2018? I expected this when they announce the iPhone XI in September (and release in November or whatever). Not... in a few months.

Unfortunately some [clickbait] sites took MacRumor's summary of Ming-Chi Kuo's (analyst) comments that Apple would launch three new models of the iPhone in autumn, replacing the current iPhone X, and rewrote it to make it appear that the X was being discontinued early. In fact, what Ming-Chi Kuo presented was an iPhone 5 -> iPhone 5S + iPhone 5C scenario, where "last year's model" is replaced by a cheaper "new" model alongside the standard yearly upgrade. In this case, the speculation is that there will be a new OLED iPhone "X2", a new OLED iPhone "X2"+, and a downmarket LCD-based iPhone X replacement. This is all 8 months away, of course.

Here's the original quote:

iPhone X would hurt product brand value & lineup of 2H18 new models if it continues to sell at a lower price after 2H18 new models launch: Lowering iPhone X's price after the 2H18 new models launch would be a negative to product brand value given 3D sensing and OLED display are features of the new high-price model. Additionally, to sell iPhone X at a lower price may have a negative impact on shipments of the new 6.1" LCD iPhone in 2H18. Thus, we estimate iPhone X will reach end-of-life (EOL) around the middle of 2018.

AirPower looks like a maxipad, there is a absolutely nothing special about its design, it's actually one of the plainest products they have ever come out with...or have never come out with.
airpower-apple-100735600-large.jpg

Trust me, I yearn for a design this simple after sifting through a couple of third party chargers. It's all that's needed really for charging three things at once, and placing them wherever on the mat.

YouTube/Gmail/Maps optimizations

Are these apps that much better on Android devices?

New animojis coming:

Business chat:
Business Chat is a new way for users to communicate directly with businesses right within Messages. This feature will launch in Beta with the public availability of iOS 11.3 this spring, with the support of select businesses including Discover, Hilton, Lowe's and Wells Fargo. With Business Chat, it's easy to have a conversation with a service representative, schedule an appointment or make purchases using Apple Pay in the Messages app. Business Chat doesn't share the user's contact information with businesses and gives users the ability to stop chatting at any time.
Health Records:
The new Health Records feature brings together hospitals, clinics and the existing Health app to make it easy for consumers to see their available medical data from multiple providers, whenever they choose. Patients from participating medical institutions will have information from various institutions organized into one view and receive regular notifications for their lab results, medications, conditions and more. Health Records data is encrypted and protected with a passcode.
Additional iOS 11.3 Features:
  • Apple Music will soon be the home for music videos. Users can stream all the music videos they want without being interrupted by ads. They can also watch the hottest new videos, the classics or ones from their favorite artists back-to-back in new music video playlists.
  • Apple News now makes it easier to stay up-to-date on the most important videos of the day with a new Video group in For You, and improved Top Stories.
  • HomeKit software authentication provides a great new way for developers to add HomeKit support to existing accessories while protecting privacy and security.
  • Support for Advanced Mobile Location (AML) to automatically send a user's current location when making a call to emergency services in countries where AML is supported.
No mention of iMessage iCloud sync. I hope that doesn't mean it's not coming back.

The reason they'd be dropping the X wouldn't be because its successor would be drastically different in design.
They might be dropping the X because - while usually, when the new model hits, last year's model goes down by $100. (so like around 500-600 bucks)

But as opposed to the iPhones before it, the X costs $ 999.

A $899 iPhone X from last year is simply not a relevant product. Anyone paying that much for a phone would just opt to get the most recent model. There's no place for "what was last year's premium priced model" in Apple's lineup.

In all likelihood, Apple's lineup next year will be: iPhone X2 (or XS or X-2, or new X or whatever it's named), iPhone 8S, iPhone 8

There won't be an iPhone X without the notch. The notch is part of the iPhone's new design language, whether you like it or not.

edit: oh this has been answered already - quite a while ago, even. My bad. I kinda overlooked the replies.

*minimum a grand

Phone is bitching, what's not to talk about

Hey, I've got one, not knocking it*. Just surprised is all, I don't remember previous iPhone threads on the Other Site maintaining this much traction. Quite a refutation of all the claim chowder about how it was doomed to fail before it launched.

Except for that Control Center that's still up top. And how quickly it wants to turn off the screen when looking away.

Alright I've been off the internet for two weeks and I come back to this "claim chowder" nonsense, what's up with that?

Like it's clever and I like it but it's everywhere after being nowhere

Gruber desperately needs an editor. Too much aimless political ranting and posts that go beyond basically linking someone else and saying "I agree" are few and far between these days. He used to be a good crank but he's become a bad crank.

Animoji hype was quite short lived huh
I don't think anyone really hyped it. It just demonstrated the technology in the phone. That's all I ever saw it as.

People always want to doom Apple. Yet they're almost always successful. It's clockwork. See aux jack.

I've looked for one around launch and couldn't find one. I'll ask again now. Is there any sort of third party lightning to 3.5mm adapter without that short middle cable section? I'm never switching from my custom made Westone IEMs to those garbage wireless headphones so I'm stuck using the adapter. I guess I could shell out $100 for the official westone lighting cable but tbh if there is a cheaper solution I'd rather go that route.

I don't know what's worse, no iPhone X support or bad iPhone X support. Probably bad iPhone X support.
