Does anyone else have the issue where the TV auto renames the HDMI input names back to default? Ex.: My "Switch" HDMI name will be renamed back to "HDMI2/DVI" when I use the Switch the next day. It's very annoying.

Same here.

After several years with Samsung, this will be probably my last TV from the Korean company. HDR is a mess, no support, no updates, YouTube keep freezing, this auto renaming thing and other sh*ts... It was a good run but now it's enough.

The grass isn't greener on the other side.

Honestly I really don't understand TV manufacturers. They seem to insist on pushing out shoddy UI every year. My two year old smart TV in the bed room needs like 3-5 minutes to boot up and load Netflix. That's unacceptable.

I would be surprised if there wasn't a better mid-range TV in 2018. 2017 was just a bad year for the mid-range.
Define better?

I mean, the only improvement I can see for a mid-range 2018 set is Dolby Vision HDR sets. As judging by the CES this year, displays are pretty much the same tech as they have been since 2016, sometimes either being the exact same screens, or only having minor changes like a bit of increased brightness. Technically, it's better, but if you can get a 2016 set for a few 100 bucks less you seem to be barely losing out.

You may very well be right. I was only speculating and didn't follow CES this year like I did the last few years as for the first time I'm not looking to get anything new.

I have the same issue with the HDMI input name changing, and then it will do odd behavior when it is off, like constantly turn on / off my stereo. Then HDMI-CEC stops working (TV doesn't turn on stereo / volume controls), and the HDMI-ARC output to my stereo stops working as well. I have to unplug the TV for 30 seconds and plug it back in to resolve.

It's one of the many extreme annoyances with this TV. I'm considering getting rid of it and going for the LG OLED set.

Well there are improvements coming out of CES2018, like Micro-LED from Samsung, but that's years off and certainly nowhere near mid-range yet.

Question on that Dr. Zoidberg Are names retained for any HDMI ports that had auto detected prior to turning it off? I like the the X1X has the Xbox logo on its plaque/panel.

I don't think it changes what they currently are, but I'm not 100% sure.

It's absolutely no excuse, but I will say that ARC and HDMI-CEC have been buggy and had annoying quirks on every TV I've tried using them with. I went through numerous models from different manufacturers before I ended up with the KS8000. I would always get annoyed and eventually disable them. To be fair, my setup is more complicated than most. I'm sure if all you had was a TV, sound bar, and cable box it would probably work reliably.

There is a special procedure you can do to turn off this auto-detection. It worked for me. I'll paste it here:

HDMI AUTO DETECT TOGGLE

The HDMI Auto Detect feature can be turned off on Samsung 2016/2017 TVs using the remote control by pressing a certain key sequence (either IR or Bluetooth remote works).

1. Make sure TV is updated to latest firmware version

2. Switch TV to TV source – HDMI may not work with BT Smart remotes. TV source works with either remote

3. Using IR Remote: Mute + 7 + 2 + 9 + Exit

4. Using Smart Control: Mute + Vol Down + Ch Down + Mute

PLEASE NOTE: TV does not display any messages after you press the above key combination. This function is a toggle. So if you want to turn HDMI Auto Detect on again, press the same key sequence.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!! :-D

That is correct. But with the abundance of HDR games over the past year, this has gone from a minor annoyance to a major one.

Little off-topic, but I'm the only one here thinking that Apple should join the TV market and (hopefully) revolutionize the OS and UI? They did a great job with iOS and MacOS, so why not try to make their own TVs with a dedicated version of tvOS?

Thats exactly what i said a few pages back. TV needs someone to push them in the ass and no one seems to be doing that now software wise

Apple would not revolutionize anything. They'd just have less bugs at the cost of a 50% premium on all their products. I honestly don't think they'd spur other manufacturers to do anything. Everything works well enough that the vast majority of consumers will never notice the small issues like HDR settings in game mode.

I have a cheaper 4K Samsung that changes settings accordingly, even on the same input, for example when I go from the xbox to Netflix. I still love my KS8000 though.

Yeah, same here it's a good TV and with the right content the image is stunning. I just don't understand why can't they have the same features on higher end models that are present on cheaper models/lower series, from previous years. It's downright stupid and the fact that it takes them so much time to fix it or acknowledge the problem makes me not want to purchase Samsung products in the future.
I have some bad clouding on my set and they told me it's perfectly normal (samsung france) when clearly people are getting refunds/repairs for that and Samsung touts this tv as having great black levels, dark scenes, etc...

Their customer service is just shit.

Sorry to bring back that subject but I searched on the AVS forum and here and couldn't find an update on that Gaming Mode HDR update .. is it still supposed to come?

I received the following PM from Rudy1 on AVS about the topic on 1/19:

Rudy1:
I received an email message from South Korea this morning. The HDR game mode patch will be included in the next global Over The Network transmission, which will also include several bug fixes. I will PM you when I have the timeframe info. They didn't mention anything about the HDR10+ update for 2016 models, and I believe this is on company orders due to the threats of class action suits against Samsung.

A week passed, so I asked him if there was any news on when the patch would be arriving, and he responded with this:

Rudy1:
I haven't received any heard anything else regarding the HDR GAME MODE patch, but if they follow the company's new firmware distribution schedule I would expect it to be bundled with the next global OTN broadcast. That should take place shortly after they present the 2018 lineup in March, so we're probably looking at April before most of the owners around the world start receiving the new firmware. The bundle will include fixes for ongoing bugs, and well as small updates to the OS code. Once the patch is installed, I will be asking you guys for feedback on the performance with the various gaming platforms before I report the results back to the South Korean R&D headquarters. And I'm sure they will want to share the results with professional review sites such as RTINGS.

Make of that what you will.

According to my Samsung contacts (my uncle works there) we should be cautious about potential leaks by random people on the internet who provide zero proof and don't have a reliable leak resume.

Is there a definitive guide to using HDR with a PC on the KS8000? I have the latest version of Windows and I can enable "HDR and advanced color," but it looks super dark and weird. Do I even need to bother with Windows' built-in HDR support for games that have HDR in exclusive fullscreen mode?

That is the way it is. Your desktop and regular apps will look dark and "off" but when the HDR game or video plays it will look "right", provided you have the proper TV settings for HDR (Backlight to 20, etc.)

So basically, you have to go in and turn that setting on before you do HDR stuff, and then go back in and turn if off when you want to return to standard SDR computing and games. At least that's been my experience.

I was just going to try this because the TV forgot my PS4, but then I realised there's no obvious mute button on the remote. What did you press, Zoidberg?

Got a new message from Rudy:

I just received confirmation that the next global OTN firmware broadcast is scheduled for April; according to the South Korea R&D team, the HDR GAME MODE patch will be included, along with various other bug fixes.

This came unprompted. I didn't ask for an update or anything. We'll see. If April comes and goes and we still haven't seen a patch, I will officially give up.

Yeah when I first got the tv everything was labeled nice and now it's gone. How can I reapply that?

Thanks for letting us know. So 2-3 more months of suffering. At least I can stop checking the Korean Samsung site until April.

Interesting that, as of the time of my post, Rudy1 has not updated the KS8000 thread on AVSForum with this choice bit of information.

I have my PS4 pro hooked to this TV with GAME mode on and UHDMI color enabled. As for the PS4 Pro settings I have resolution set to RGB.

Then depending on the game the pro will automatically switch output settings between RGB and YUV422.

Does that sound correct or do I need to change settings?

For example, Monster Hunter World will show video output settings as RGB. Whereas Hoizon Zero Dawn and Ratchet & Clank will show YUV422.

Just want to make sure I'm getting the most out of my pro and be 4K/HDR tv so any recommendations on settings will be greatly appreciated!

HDR games will trigger YUV422, do you have HDR off in MHW? If so thats likely why its RGB in that game.

So Rudy1 says the update will hit April?
So, he's saying a 2016 t.v is going to get a patch in 2018 that fixes a problem we've wanted fixed since 2016.
YET, the 2017 MU8000 has the same problem and it hasnt been fixed yet?
... so we wait, hope again. sigh.

It's not just that one fix. FW updates usually include a bunch of stuff that needs fixing and a bunch of stuff gets added.
Let's wait and see though.

No I keep HDR on on MHW. Strange, guess I'll double check to be sure but I couldn't have sworn it stayed at RGB.

In any case is it better to keep the setting at RGB or should I switch it to auto?

So Im having some strange issues with my KS8000. Recently apps have been getting weird when attempting to open them, theyve been going to a blank screen and they never actually load. Holding the back button and force closing the app seems to fix the issue but the more concerning problem that just arrived: the sound has been cutting out. Its happened twice so far but it will start like a slight pause in the sound and then go back to normal, then slowly over the course of several minutes (probably like 5-10) these pauses will get longer to the point where its only playing sound intermittently. At first I thought it was my surround sound connections but I fiddled with all my connections and they are all fine. What ended up "fixing" it temporarily was holding the power button so the TV resets and it corrected the problem.

Has anyone else run into this?

I've had the app issue, and yes holding the back button to reboot fixes them.
However I've never had the sound issue, I have a sound bar btw- even if the sound was set to tv I would notice it.

I bought a different remote as I'm not a fan of the base model.

I had a different HD TV from Samsung before and had it a few months after I bought the new model. The remote from the old model worked flawless with the new model, therefore I purchased that remote again.
2CGbncQ.jpg

Not really that expensive, was like 10€ or so.

I know this was posted a few weeks ago now, but do you have the model number for the remote you are using? I think the image is BN59-011 something - but I can't tell for sure.

It's not that I mind the remote that came with the TV, but I think I'd prefer a more traditional one - especially as the amazon app looks like it would work better with it.

I still feel like the night time sections are too dark when HDR is enabled. The daytime sections look gorgeous. And the game still looks great at night but definitely too dark. If I toggle HDR off it's suddenly much brighter (but more washed out). Is this just how HDR is supposed to look? More natural thus darker at night?

I have TV set to game mode, UHDMI color enabled, brightness 45, contrast 100, sharpness 0, dynamic contrast at medium, and color temperature at warm 1. I believe those are all the main variables.

I can't seem to find any definitive solution online and I have been searching for a while.

Have you tried cranking the gamma up?

Not really supposed to be washed out. Try turning the brightness down slightly for HDR and maybe upping the colour value. Colour spacing setting can effect this to. Ideally this is calibrated using the custom option. Auto should represent what the content is sending out, Native will try to optimize the colour but can often become over saturated.

Also try to darken the room as much as possible. Make sure the backlight is on max for HDR.

I currently do have max backlight setting (goes to 20) and color spacing set to custom. I have not tried playing around with gamma much so I'll give that a go next time.

My cousin says he experienced the same thing while playing HZD (he has a different tv). His solution was to just increase brightness whenever night would come. I just feel like there's gotta be a better solution than having to constantly fiddle with brightness whenever day turns into night, haha.
