iOS 1.2.5 is a fascinating update. The Now Playing box in Control Center now has two components, that device and also an Apple TV if you have one hooked up and you can toggle between them, and it remembers your last selection

I definitely haven't before this update, on either my iPhone or iPad. I always had the Remote in my control center, and the notifications for typing, but never anything in Now Playing

I'm dumb. I've had my iPad on the public beta for ages now so it was basically 11.2.5 already haha. That explains why it seemed so familiar.

Can y'all help me decide on whether I should get an Apple Watch? I want one and the 42mm Series 3 is available for $330

11.2.5 details

iOS 11.2.5 includes support for HomePod and introduces the ability for Siri to read the news (US, UK and Australia only). This update also includes bug fixes and improvements.

HomePod support

  • Setup and automatically transfer your Apple ID, Apple Music, Siri and Wi-Fi settings to HomePod.

Siri News

  • Siri can now read the news, just ask, "Hey Siri, play the news". You can also ask for specific news categories including Sports, Business or Music.

Other improvements and fixes

  • Addresses an issue that could cause the Phone app to display incomplete information in the call list
  • Fixes an issue that caused Mail notifications from some Exchange accounts to disappear from the Lock screen when unlocking iPhone X with Face ID
  • Addresses an issue that could cause Messages conversations to temporarily be listed out of order
  • Fixes an issue in CarPlay where Now Playing controls become unresponsive after multiple track changes
  • Adds ability for VoiceOver to announce playback destinations and AirPod battery level

Their iOS 11 page doesn't even mention Messages in the Cloud anymore and hasn't for a while. I'd bet it got pushed all the way to iOS 12 or canceled outright.

Size and version number back in App Store, nice.

iBooks is now just Books.

Removing them in the first place was an insane choice, they clearly wanted to simplify it but it had no benefit at all to the end user.

How iOS handles and displays pending downloads is still stuck in the Stone Age compared to Android. One of the few things that's a clear win for it over iOS.

Oh nice! I was starting to lose hope.

Why wouldn't they mention this in the preview though? It's arguably the biggest headlining feature. Makes me think it's not actually going to ship in this update.

ive been waiting forever for this. part of me thought it was dead.

dont know why its not mentioned in preview, but the fact that it's in beta 1 should be a good indicator it'll ship in the update, right?

Missed opportunity for the Apple Phone with the X.

theory: iphone 11 will apple phone, iphone 12 will be apple phone 2, and so on...

i joke of course

Who's dropping $350 on Friday? As crazy as it seems I think I am going to jump in. I don't have a good speaker in my kitchen/dining room area and would like to stay in the Apple ecosystem. I do hope they come out with some kind of cheaper satellite device, though. The iPhone is sort of that, but my phone is usually in my pocket where it's not going to hear me.

I listen to Apple Music sometimes, but the vast, vast majority of my music is ripped from CDs over the years in iTunes. I think I only own one track from the iTunes Store. So for me it's not really relevant at all, even though the hardware itself sounds very impressive. Apple's walled garden approach for this product does not reflect the reality of diverse audio sources people are listening to music from.

I'm most likely in too. I have a Sonos One currently, but since I listen to Apple Music 99% of the time is like something that I can control AM via voice. Also I'm in because I'm hoping that the audio quality is as good as Apple has been touting. The Sonos I have has Alexa built in, but I haven't found myself using the voice assistant stuff much, probably won't use it much on the HomePod either besides music control, and maybe weather/news questions.

Do we know what time on Friday the HomePod preorders will start?

I was completely set on the HomePod, but when it got delayed I invested in a nice soundbar for the TV and an Echo Dot that connects to the soundbar via bluetooth. Happy with the more flexible setup and more powerful automation abilities (also considering that I still get to keep Siri on iPhone).

This one I'm gonna sit out and wait.

I really don't understand why people buy Alexa products when Amazon stores all of your voice requests on their servers indefinitely, and they can do whatever they want with them. It's such a privacy violation and people just don't seem to give a shit.

Siri is definitely subpar but Google or Amazon being that entrenched in my home makes me feel icky

Apple's subpar AI makes me feel more icky.

My criteria is always buy what's best, within financial reason of course. Apple are certainly no plucky up start themselves so you're choosing your poison when it comes to the cloud and tech in general these days.

If Apple had a good product they'd have a winner given they have so much audio expertise themselves (and through Beats) but Siri isn't even as good as Alexa was at launch, nevermind now. That's game over when it comes to a smart hub.

Companies whose businesses hinge on good search results being great at this type of rudimentary AI is no surprise, but Apple's inability to learn from their rivals is.

I'm not thrilled about my voice being stored on their servers, but when I thought about what commands I actually use these voice assistants for - playing music, getting weather, turning on smart home devices, etc - I realized there wasn't any personal or sensitive information being exchanged.

I don't think the privacy aspect is that big of a selling point for most users.

it's not only about sensitive information, its also them having a vast data base of voice samples that could potentially end up in the wrong hands and be used for god knows what

I'm not looking to spend $350, but if I was, honestly Siri would primarily need to be as good as Echo or Google at controlling smart home devices for me to care about that comparison. And having used all three for the last year as I've been installing smart bulbs and plugs and Harmony stuff, I'm not worried about it.

If Siri in HomePod is good at working with the Home app, Hue, Harmony, etc and controlling other Apple devices and services, then it would do the job just fine and in some cases better than the others

So for the first time in years I'm off the Beta train. With yesterday's final releases of iOS and macOS I decided to remove the profiles from all my devices. Now I'm on stable. I've decided I'm just going to jump on the train once a year after WWDC just for the x.0 betas. Then once they come out I'll jump off again.

So handoff between my iPhone and iPad has just stopped working entirely, both on 11.2.5. Multiple restarts on both, I just can't get anything to appear in the app switcher on my phone or the dock on my iPad. Can't test with my Mac since a friend is borrowing it for a while.

Strange. And annoying. Anyone else?

Edit: which of course means iCloud clipboard doesn't work, but that was always the most unreliable thing anyway

Stupid questions:
1) WiFi on, and both on same network?
2) BT activated on both?

Handoff needs both of those activated to work.
