It's time for Sega AM2 to come out of hiding and finally give us that much-awaited fighting game sequel: Sonic the Fighters 2

I'd rather see Arc System Works take a stab, personally. I think they'd be a much better fit for a modern Sonic fighting game. They excel at colorful, stylized visuals and fast-paced fighting games. I would just hope Sega would keep them in check when it comes to DLC prices and practices because they're among the worst as far as fighting game developers.

AM2 still does some arcade games for SEGA though they're very different from the ones of the old times. Games like Soul Reverse and Kancolle Arcade for instance. Current AM1 does a lot of arcade games too nowadays.

But I really want a Fighters 2. And a competent RPG :(

Man I'd gladly rebuy M2's Arcade ports they put up on PSN if they were re-released on PS4 and Steam at least.

they are not very good at making video games.
But I need more
more words, true critique, the kind of writing that restore the spirit to those seeking the path.

...case in point, I just did a Stealth section where there some 1 hit kill zombies in The Last of us. This was my reaction towards the game after my NPC done fucked up

I vividly remember playing Sonic Mania for the first time, getting to Press Garden Act 2, putting my Switch down on the table and just walking away for a bit because I couldn't process that I was actually playing the Sonic game of my dreams.

Oh and getting stuck on the Oil Ocean boss, but who didn't?

For some reason, the only thing I really bothered to clip from my first playthrough was every time I went in to Blue Sphere (which was every time it was available to me).

No, I dunno why I clipped those either. (But I do know why I kept going in - I quite like me some Blue Sphere, y'know.)

I also just noticed that at the very start of the Metal Sonic fight I seem to randomly start flying with Tails because my instinct was to hit up+A to charge a super peelout lmao

My laughter when Game Gear Silver Sonic popped out was also something I wish I could've recorded

Same.
Kind of cheated by constantly siccing Tails on it with Up+A.

Honestly Metallic Madness Act 1 boss gave me more problems - getting instakilled by being crushed in Sonic games has always kind of terrified me as a kid; you just walk a bit and then *BOOBOOM* Sonics terrifying bassy death scream and his shocked face with his wide dead eyes; and that's why Marble Garden can suck it.

Heh, Nacks my favorite forgotten sonic character, hope he survives the transition to the new comic too. Say you guys hear about the board/miniatures game announcement?

*Also raises hand*

The only part that stumped me for a couple minutes was the Metal Sonic fight since I didn't understand how to hurt him when little cutie Game Gear Silver Sonic showed up.

Same.

:|

I knew exactly what to do with the Metal Sonic fight, oddly enough. Probably because Sonic 2 8-bit was my first Sonic game, and young Seven Force spent many a day using the level select code to fight Silver Sonic in Scrambled Egg Zone.

When I watched this game being played, I somehow feel bad for Knuckles being beaten up. I guess being the first opponent in the campaign meant that he's naturally the easiest of them all, so it's usually him being beaten up handily.

Thank you for reading.

Apparently, the reason Sonic the Fighters (originally named Sonic Championship in the US) had such a small amount of cabinets in the West was due to Sega of America fearing backlash about a game where Sonic characters kicked the shit out of one another.

I remember reading this on Sonic Retro over a decade ago. Don't know how true it is but I think it's believable since that's the main reason Nintendo was hesitant about bringing Smash Bros over to the West.

Sonic "Championship" is the only game I've ever cleared on an actual Arcade machine. There was one pretty near where I lived back in the day.

As far as fighting games are concerned, Sonic Fighters is pretty easy for the most part. Metal Sonic is the only fight that reads you inputs to any meaningful extent. No bullshit like Mortal Kombat 2 or Street Fighter 3.

Hard to say what's the best act in Mania. They're all OK to me except Titanic Monarch. I do need to replay the game more though.

I think it was supposed to be this year but who really knows

The chance for a timely Sonic movie is so fucking long gone. I don't know how anyone at Sega thought this would be a good idea. Sonic isn't the A-list mascot he once was. I feel like the last chance Sega had to get someone to make a Sonic movie and not have it feel out of place was back during the Dreamcast's first couple years.

Yeah, this is what I always feared about the way Aaron handles the Twitter account. His tweets are funny and sometimes even charming, but it feels off whenever an actual weak title releases.

Because the answer is actually Press Garden Act 2.

You're not very good at convincing people, are you? ;)

Wasn't trying very hard to, lol

Seriously though, it's an aesthetic triumph for the series, it has a gimmick (The ice blocks) that not only lasts just long enough to not get old, but can be circumvented entirely through the use of the Fire Shield (highlighting one of Mania's best attributes in general; the intelligent way the different elemental shields interact with certain hazards and gimmicks throughout the game) enemy placement that manages to add a bit of urgency (speaking mostly of the Carry enemies) without seeming cheap, and some of the neatest displays of various paths intertwining with each other this side of Aquatic Ruin.

Studiopolis (both acts) is right behind it, though I think I prefer Act 1 to 2. Act 2 is far and away the best pinball themed stage in the series, though.

Studiopolis 2 has too many gimmicks that take control away, especially the little funnels, that I find a bit annoying. Music and aesthetic is flawless, though.

Mania as a whole feels a little heavy on scripted warps and long high speed sections. Chemical Plant and Studiopolis being paired off doesn't help, and the same goes for Stardust and Hydrocity.

This section of the song is beyond godlike.

z_swedishchef.jpg

I like to stand by the idea that Flame Core attempts to emulate Lava Reef in a certain way, the biggest being that transition from a loud, melodic and pronounced BGM in the first half to some of the franchise's chillest music in their second halves. The aesthetics of both levels also kind of "cool down" with the music, though it's a bit less pronounced with Flame Core outside of the dark rooms. If that was actually an intention when designing Flame Core then 06 gets mad points from me.

Wording makes it sound like possibly blind on those character packs. Will have to see the price, but looks like it could be a fun intermediate/beginner group game. I think I'm in if the price is good, and depending on date. Also the kickstarter version box better have storage for all the characters. Should be interesting to see if any additional packs are included in the kickstarter. Once again, super sonic is an obvious kickstarter exclusive

Only major missing character would be chaos 0 and perhaps Tikal, perhaps also kickstarter possibilities
note not actually on kickstarter yet

My answer is presently Titanic Monarch Zone Act 1. I love the feeling of ascending a tall tower like that, the ominous night-time mood that it has, the music's tone landing somewhere between oppressive and upbeat (whereas Act 2 just went for the former), and how they worked in one of the more memorable bonus stage gimmicks from S3&K directly into a stage proper (but now without the ascending instant-fail laser to screw you out of time to figure out how they work). It felt like Techno Tower in Chaotix actually done properly, with a bit of Panic Puppet Zone Act 2 mixed in for good measure (with the giant Eggman suit). One of the stronger end stages from the series.

I don't like Act 2 as much, though. The bottomless pits got rather annoying by the end of it all (I mean, they were covered up by teleportation fog, but let's face it, that's functionally what they were). I still fall into them on revisits...

For me Studiopolis Zone act 1 is the best act in Sonic Mania. I am a bit biased I suppose but just everything about that level popped out to me as perfect when the game was revealed. Not just the general art, use of colors, music, general presentation and vibe, but also the little touches and references all around the level. When I saw Sonic's silhouette behind the yellow windows in the initial trailer it immediately hit me that this game was absolutely going to deliver.

I was looking around YouTube and I am quite shocked there are still no worthwhile Sonic Forces mods out there yet. Mania has a significantly more interesting modding scene, how the hell did that happen? I figured at the very least people would be porting Unleashed levels by now, but I wonder if Forces' mechanics are too limited for that?

I'd be more excited about the board game if I actually got the chance to play the Mega Man board game. All of my friends are too afraid of the rules & I don't know if this is going to be any better.

It was a significant amount of work just to port Unleashed levels to Generations, and that's nearly the same engine instead of the Lost World offshoot Forces uses.
