So, this thread is the only place I can share my passion project with:
I've been researching how to record LaserDiscs and VHS onto my PC for the primary reason of backing up old Japanese music I've accumulated over the years, mainly YMO and Chisato Moritaka. Going by Discogs, I have what I believe to be all of their disc and tape releases. No Betamax, sadly, not that crazy...
What got me started on this was the amount of low quality rips of stuff I already owned on YouTube. I figured I could be that guy that takes the time to make a proper archive and also use proper Japanese(I hope) in the title with English to make it easier to find. I finally found a decent composite capture card and fine-tuned upscaling without filling my hard drive in 5mins that doesn't compromise quality.
Right now, I'm testing the 1983 YMO 伝説(Legend) live LaserDisc. I've had success with directly feeding it into OBS and scaling in there. If I can find a cheap HDMI capture card, I may also try with an old DVDO scaler to 720p, then tweak afterwards. I'm still fine-tuning proper color and black levels. LaserDisc was incredibly finicky with that, especially when playing on modern monitors/TVs because of the color and black level format. I should have a sample to share next weekend if anyone is interested.
