I'm considering buying a Macbook Air for college. Can I get Soundtrack Pro on it? I've heard great things about Soundtrack Pro, and I really want to try it.

You mean Logic Pro? Soundtrack Pro was Apple's app focused on film scoring, but they discontinued that a few years ago. As for Logic, I think the Air is going to struggle with Logic; most people are using MacBook Pros and iMacs for Logic these days.

So handoff between my iPhone and iPad has just stopped working entirely, both on 11.2.5. Multiple restarts on both, I just can't get anything to appear in the app switcher on my phone or the dock on my iPad. Can't test with my Mac since a friend is borrowing it for a while.

Strange. And annoying. Anyone else?

Edit: which of course means iCloud clipboard doesn't work, but that was always the most unreliable thing anyway
Same problem. Instant Hotspot on iPad is not working as a result.

Cool, just wanted to make sure it's not just me.

If you care about eGPUs at all, good news, 10.13.4 seems to be the release where it finally gets stable, with clamshell support and hot-plugging finally getting supported and numerous issues with Vega GPUs getting fixed:

https://egpu.io/external-gpu-macos-10-13-4-update/

Still AMD-only, though, which sucks.

Nvidia made their own macOS drivers, will those not work?

Do we know about the power cord? It probably uses an iMac-style power cord right?

Anyone regret buying Apple Watch or not find it worthwhile?

Had one for about two weeks now and I was very skeptical it'd stick but I've found it very worthwhile. Best uses being as an activity tracker (and almost as a guilt-inducer when you're not doing much) and as a volume control for my headphones.

If you have a specific use in mind, it's great. Otherwise it can be an expensive dongle.

I like mine and it's not even one of the good ones - it's an S0 sports. Been wearing it for a couple of years.

I don't exactly use apps, that whole utopia is forgotten by me. The app grid is irrelevant as far as I care. I use timers, activities, and it's my notification device and fitness tracker. And it's my time piece. I feel naked without it.

Within the next 12 months I want to upgrade to a better one if possible.

Hey all, I'm having problems with my Mac Mini. I tried to do an update on it and it won't start up now. On boot, it just hangs at the Apple logo without the normal spinning or search. I can boot into recovery mode, and I can try reinstalling the OS, but is that going to erase everything on it?

if my series 0 were to break, i'd buy a new one in a heartbeat.
I barely use any third party apps - notifications on the wrist are just so good. Being less dependent on constantly having your phone with you is such a nice quality of life improvement. Like, mine's plugged into the living room charger most of the time when i'm at home. I still never miss a call or a message.
basically, in the same situation as jts

I gave my girlfriend a series 3 as a christmas gift and she loves it - uses it for triathlon practice. Battery life on a fresh series 3 is so much better than on a 3 year old series 0. (not just because of the battery's age, but also because the original capacity of the 38mm series 0 is around 200 mAh, and on the series 3 it's ~240 mAh.)

Against my best judgement I tried to get Siri to search "What's the Skull Key in Stardew Valley for" but no matter how I said 'skull' it always thought I said 'school', presumably because of my accent.

Remind me never to ask Siri a medical question.

I switched to using the British female Siri voice early on; I just find it more pleasant. But until recently you couldn't choose a separate language for voice input, so I had to speak to Siri in a British accent for it to understand me well.

I swore off betas but I got conned into 11.3 by a feature I've been requesting for ages: now in Apple Music when you press on the pink artist/album title in Now Playing it asks you where you want to go: artist's page, album's page, or if you're playing from a playlist, the playlist's page

I sold my series 0 last year and it was a mistake. I miss having a Apple Watch so much that I am thinking about buying the series 3 with my tax return.

So to answer your question I don't regret buying one but I sure do regret selling it.

Is there a good app for iPhones for malware removal?

I never really looked into before but I've been getting some redirects on random pages that looks awfully similar to what happens on computers affected by malware.

Apps are sandboxed on iOS so anything that purports to be an antivirus or malware removal app is itself malware. Apple have finally cracked down on those types of apps and is removing them from the App Store.

Whatever your problem is, that's not the solution. Check your Safari/content blocker settings.

If you add music to your home iTunes library that was not acquired through a purchase, HomePod will not be able to access it. It appears HomePod doesn't have Home Sharing, which would enable that kind of feature.

This is pretty much a death knell for my interest in the HomePod. Maybe this is related to why the Remote app has seen no update since before iOS 11 launched. Apple likely wants to forget that anyone has ripped music in iTunes on their Mac. Maybe they'll support iTunes Cloud Library, but I'm not going to risk 20 years of curating my library to that process, especially without lossless Match files. I'm sure you could probably use the HomePod as an AirPlay target within iTunes, but that's sort of counter to the whole idea of using Siri to play your music.

Wait so does Home Pod work with Spotify if you stream it from your iPhone? Or can I stream music from my iPhone to home pod?

It says home pod does not have home sharing so I can't stream music from my Mac... is home pod just an Apple Music accessory?

You should be able to stream anything from your iPhone via AirPlay. I would assume that means that you could stream audio from a Mac or Apple TV since the HomePod should show up as an AirPlay target.

^ Pretty much. Since HomePod ships with AirPlay you can play things like Spotify over to said HomePod, or a few simultaneously when they ship AirPlay 2.

Or at least that's how it should work. I'd be very surprised if it worked any other way.

HomePod is an airplay target. Meaning you can airplay music from iTunes on your Mac onto it, but there is no home sharing. It means you can send the audio for anything: Spotify, Pandora, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. It's just that Siri only works with Apple Music

The thing is, there's tons of existing amp/speaker options that support AirPlay. The HomePod only makes sense if you're all-in on Apple Music and iTunes purchases, because controlling everything via Siri is the HomePod's raison d'être.

That is a large part of it for sure. There is much more functionality if you are an Apple Music subscriber. However, if this review is to be believed, it is worth the money just for the sound quality alone.

https://www.reddit.com/r/audiophile/comments/7t51a2/nda_is_up_what_can_i_tell_you_guys_about_the/

the tl;dr:

Speaker companies who have not figure out beamforming it even room correction should start worrying. A single HomePod, for the size and price, slaughters most speakers under $1000. I had a hunch that HomePods in Stereo would give my KEF X300A's a run for their money... now it's confirmed. Apple briefly demoed stereo for me, and I was quite floored. When Stereo is enabled via software update, a pair of HomePods may be the best bookshelf (2.0) setup under $1000 that you can get. No it will not beat floorstanding speakers with a dedicated sub. But for $700 a pair, they'll be a good replacement for a pair of bookshelves.

Yeah, mos def the speaker tech in these things sound amazing. On imaging they might even be better than my OG Definitive Tech BP-30s. But they are artificially limiting the usefulness. Will some people buy these as shelf speakers? For sure. But is the audio alone going to make it competitive to the flexibility of the Alexa devices? I highly doubt it, unless they blow up the Siri doors to third parties in iOS 12.

The HomePod sounds amazing. I mean it sounds like it sounds amazing. Shit. You know what I mean.

But I'm still gonna say that I do love the punch of my 2.1 soundbar. Yes I'm cheap.

I hope that, besides expanding Siri's abilities as begged by everyone, Apple also expands the Siri home music initiative in the future to be more flexible. Bring your own speakers if you want to.

Do we know how much room a single HomePod can fill up with reasonably loud quality sound? If that question makes any sense.

Anyone know how to mark things as watched in Amazon and Netflix on the Apple TV? Things I have watched and finished in Amazon fill up the "watch next" bar even after I finished watching them, and I don't know how to remove them. Same with Netflix. I finished a television show but it is still showing up in "continue watching"

That's not restricted to the Apple TV. I don't have one and still have those issues with both Netflix and Amazon.

You can sometimes fix it by watching it again and skipping to the end. Sometimes.

it'd be insulting if it didn't, frankly. i don't know why (or even if) that was ever a real concern. if the homepod couldn't play non-itunes-or-apple-music music it should've been jettisoned into the sun and never released to the public.

i think that article is actually pretty bad - it just says what should've been obvious (airplay Just Works, apple music Just Works), doesn't have answers for pretty much anything else (does itunes match work? does bluetooth work? shrug), and one answer is just flat-out nonsense ("you can stream FLAC from other devices" doesn't really answer "why does homepod support FLAC" when it's not clear what those other devices are supposed to be, because neither iTunes nor the iOS music app provide any mechanism to put FLAC in them, so... what, are you expected to airplay from Vox or something)

Serenity puts out quality content in her sleep

yeah i really loved when she wrote an article telling me and others that we are wrong and apple music didn't delete music files off my macwithout me telling it to and i'm just a dumb idiot who doesn't understand how apple music works and it's definitely not possible that apple music at launch was a horrid pile of garbage that fucked up my library in a hundred different ways to the point i had to cancel the service and restore my whole itunes library from time machine to fix it, on top of all the other defensive-fanboy-tier nonsense imore regularly publishes

(i do not like imore very much)
