Heh, sorry to get your hopes up.

Well, just finished the prologue. It only takes a hour and a half or so, but it felt a lot longer. I forgot how slow the game started.

I also forgot how fucking dark the prologue ends. Like...

Even the two cats from one of the village's children lie dead on the ground. Othello and Othellina, noooooo! :'(

Tales of Xillia, 24 hours in

I am just leaving Xian Du. I never found the first "weapon monster", so I headed out to Xagut Floodmeadow and found one there. The thing was two hit knocking everyone out. This is the first time I escaped from a battle. Crazy considering everything else in the area is now trivial.

Edit: damn, I went back and found the first monster. It hits just as hard.

Hi! I'd like to try a Tales game for the very first time! I own Symphonia, Graces f and Xillia. Which one of those is best suited for a newcomer to the series? Thanks!

My personal recommendation would be Symphonia, even though it's a bit old.

Though I'm biased and its my favourite RPG of all time.
I'm replaying the Steam version atm and I'm not really enjoying it at all. Might get better when I get Nurse and a few more skills for Lloyd. Also just died to the fake treasure chest in the first shrine which they conveniently put before the save spot.

Of those three? Definitely Symphonia. It's where a lot of new fans came into the series, on top of being a great JRPG in its own right.

How would you all rate Zestiria? Game is currently on sale for €12 at the EU PS Store (not sure about the American) and I thought about getting it since I'm currently playing Berseria and enjoying it a lot. Price isn't really an issue here, though, it's mainly the time investment. I have a lot of things I still want to play and Zestiria will take up about 40 hours (just the story) according to HowLongToBeat. Thing is, I've been reading some bad things about it in some of the Berseria LTTP threads. So I'm not sure if I should take the plunge or just watch an LP so I can at least fast-forward and leave it at that.

It's not good. Pass it up.

I honestly don't think it's a particularly good game either lol.

But I do think it's a solid introduction to the series, better than Graces f and possibly better than Xillia. It can't hurt to start with the oldest either, since later games have considerably better combat gameplay than Symphonia/Abyss/Vesperia imo.

I recently did a playthrough of Symphonia on Mania and I adored it. The plot is simple and understandable and the cliches of the time have come around to become retro chique as recent Tales games use excessive jargon to carry their plots, the characters and setting are well established and paces itself as it throws more and more plot at you, and the combat is super adaptable and you get out of it what you put in. It might pale compared to later Tales games and their more complex combat engines but the simplicity of Symphonia never got in the way of it being fun. Hell, I think it enhanced it; it's really raw and everything makes sense at a cursory glance, unlike Xillia and Zestiria.

I've searched for more opinions on the game and yeah, it doesn't seem to be very good. So I guess that's one game less in my backlog.
It's not necessarily worse than any of the others if you disregard the bugs with the camera angle which happens very rarely. It's very much a Tales game so if you liked the others you should definitely give it a shot. The music is impeccable and the story isn't bad by any means.

So I'm about ten hours into Berseria.

The gameplay is fun, I guess. It's too flashy and every character plays the exact same; all being combo fighters, on top of the thousand little rules you have to keep track of, but it's fun enough save for the random difficulty spikes. The environments are just awful.

The cast is incredible, though. The best since Vesperia. They're really what's keeping me invested.

You're in for a treat then, as the cast will only get better and better as the story progresses.

I don't quite agree with every character playing the same. The combo system is the same for everyone, but Rokurou definitely has a different playstyle than Velvet, for example. Although I admit I never really tried to learn the other party members' combat styles as the combat system is just too convoluted. Too much details to worry about if you really want to get the most out of your party.

I don't know why, but I find Bienfu hilarious. He's ever stupid pervy mascot trope rolled into one but he just works for some reason. I find him endearing.

Also I hate how every enemy in this game turtles and just breaks out of combos and counterattacks. It's bullshit.

So what are people's thoughts/hopes for the Switch game?

I think it's going to be a port of Symphonia Chronicles. Symphonia was massively popular on the Gamecube and now there's an HD Nintendo console people actually own.

Granted what I really want is a 10 year anniversary remaster of Vesperia with all the PS3 content.

EDIT: I swear to god at least half of Berseria's length is due to every enemy constantly blocking.

And fuck the random difficulty spikes. I just had to fight six guys who were all throwing massive spells and interrupting my combos.

Okay so am I crazy or was there not a post in this thread about the Vesperia PS3 patch? I swear to go it was there before.

EDIT OF course I find it right after I post this.

Anyway I might as well ask: Is it safe to patch my PS3 for Vesperia? I've never done anything like that and I'm scared of bricking my console.

It's been a few days and no one has answered me, so I hope it's okay to ask this again:

Has anyone here patched their PS3 for Vesperia? Was it a safe procedure? I can import the game for cheap but I'm afraid of bricking my console.

Apparently there's some sort of issue where you can't homebrew your PS3 if you have it updated past a certain threshold. Is that still going on or can you play Vesperia on any console?

EDIT: Yeah turns out I can't. My PS3 is too new.

Oh well, I guess I'll just hope they'll remaster it.

I looked into it but the instructions didn't make a word of sense to me so I abandoned the idea

I think it's fine if the console is updated, it just needs to have been made before a certain date

Unfortunately my PS3 is a 3001, so it's past the date.

Which to play first if I want to play the worst first? Tales of Symphonia, Tales of the Abyss or Tales of Hearts R?
Symphonia is the worst game, its dungeons are pretty bad and it has the weakest battle system out of the three. Hearts R has the best battle system out of the three, but Abyss has the better story/characters.

Bought Zestiria a couple weeks ago on sale and played some 20 hours (my first Tales of). Liked it enough to go and buy Berseria and I like that a lot so far! The best thing is that it actually feels like a Current Gen game. :D
Zestiria had some parts, which felt outright unfinished and amateurish. Like for example in "cutscenes" how the dialogue is so often abruptly paused (sometimes several seconds) through changes of camera perspectives. That was so bizarre and just took me out of the experience everytime.

Well, at least there is a much higher chance I'll play through Berseria.

Yeah, Berseria is a step up in every was from Zesteria, but you can still feel the fact that they used PS3 tech to build the game.

I really look forward to a next gen version where they try to push the tech forward, especially the over world and the maps.

So this is kind of a dumb question I guess, but I figured this is the best place to ask.

It's been years since I played any game in this series seriously, but I think I'm kind of ready to get into it again. I have a few I can choose from. I think I mainly want to play something with a good story first, fun gameplay second. What would you guys recommend playing?

  • Tales of Symphonia (PC)
  • Tales of Vesperia (360)
  • Tales of Hearts R
  • Tales of Zestiria (PC)
  • Tales of Berseria (PC or PS4, not sure which version)
If it helps any, I've played (but not beaten) Dawn of the New World (it's been so long that I don't remember much about it), Abyss (enjoyed the gameplay, but couldn't stand the damn cheagles, and the story just seemed okay), Graces F (absolutely loved this one in both the story and gameplay), and Xillia (I liked the characters and gameplay, but all the bland and reused environments really turned me off; story was good though).

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Go for Vesperia first, Berseria second.
Vesperia has a good story, great cast, decent environments, and fun game systems.
Berseria has a good story, phenomenal cast, and an okay battle system (too mashy for me) and bland environments.

Thanks for the response. Don't know if you can answer this too, but is the Vesperia film worth watching before playing the game?

It's a prequel so you could if you want. It introduces the characters and gives more background which is probably good for a first-timer. The Yuri/Flynn relationship isn't explored super fully at the beginning of the game so some context could be nice to have.

Noted, thanks. I think I'll buy the movie tomorrow and give it a watch, then start on the game.
