I'd say nearly all the chapters final "stages" go on too long but Chapter 6 takes the cake - does this actually end?

Thank God this is some of the best music in the game.

The music to this game is amazing. It reminds me of Sword and Sworcery on iOS, and its available on Bandcamp as well.

Wonder if Lil Wayne will sample this as well?

*beats stage 6* If as if this game wasnt good enough already, how about having the best platformer boss fights...period? Through a combination of narrative context, audio/visual cues, great soundtrack, tight play control, and actually forcing you to use the elements of the stage instead of just locking you in a room and jumping on some random boss?

Great game so far, about to start chapter 4! A joy to play (I also had problems gripping walls at first, but learnt to hold it down at all times, just letting go when needed), nice music, charming graphics. Story is okay, and I expect it to become great later on.

Saving B sides to the end, based on the impressions in this thread...

I don't understand why this game is supposedly meant to be played with analog stick! You can still only go in 8 directions, right? Anyway, a couple of times I've felt like I've died because of the Switch buttons not being a D-pad, but 99.95% of the times, I've gone where I've wanted.

I really love the Pico-8 version, it's even more stripped down and so pure! I already played it through twice, and I'm more eager to play it through again instead of continuing the main stories, just to improve my time and get all the strawberries.

What are your pico-8 records so far, resetera people!?

it convinced me there probably wont be a better Nintendo-esque game this year. This is the peak, and its only January

unless Bayonetta 3 comes out, then all bets are off
I'd gladly take a Mario Maker Wii U+3DS mashup. That would top this game easily, but it's definitely a high bar now.

How do you unlock the pico-8 version?

You gotta find it in one of the levels. And then its unlocked in the main menu to play whenever you want.

I find it more intuitive to switch between diagonals within split seconds with the analog. Comes into play more in the B-side levels, especially 4-B and 7-B.

Yeah I agree. I've only completed the first 4 normal stages and the first 3 B-side stages, but the analog stick felt way easier to make some of those very quick movements that are required

yeah you'll definitely want to be using the analog stick for this game. there's a mechanic in one of the later chapters that pretty much requires it.

Stuck on Flag 20 - can't get the timing for the dash crystals.

Edit: never mind, nailed it.

Finished - 1221 deaths.

The last chapter is really excellent - great game, overall. Difficulty balance was pretty much perfect throughout.

Now to collect the strawberries and somehow beat the B-sides, haha.

Not sure if I did this right or "sequence broke".

lol, you did it the cool way! it's not sequence breaking at all, just an alternate method. I'm certain the devs put this there intentionally since there's no way the gap would be just right by accident.

the "correct" method is to dash ahead of the brick and grab that keystone at the top before it gets to the obstacle

If anyone's interested, the latest episode of Nintendo Voice Chat had the IGN reviewer on to discuss why he gave the game a 10:

just skip to around 26 minutes

I'm about to buy this. Does the game support video recording on Switch? Seeing a lot of post with Twitter videos.

I really regret buying the Switch version of this game. The Joy Con's stubby analog stick is not a good fit for a game with a dash that only reads eight directions. My death count has probably doubled because of the amount of times I went diagonal when I wanted a straight shot.

Stuff like this is why I find how gaming communities react to scores so hilarious. There was an entire review attached to that score, did no one bother to read it? Part of the reason I hate numeric scoring is that they only ever act as a lightning rod for outrage/celebration as the actual text is ignored.

Does anyone have a problem with using R2 trigger for grabbing walls? I know this is done so that your thumb is free to press jump or dash but I've grown up simply sliding my thumb over to use different abilities in platformers. Have the same problem with Flinthook even though I like the feel of the platforming.

Wish they'd let you freely configure buttons.

This game is absolutely wonderful.

I will admit - the screens on the XB1 storefront made me pause a bit. The game looks dreadful and uninteresting in still screens. But in motion the game looks surprisingly satisfying and gorgeous. Couple that with the astounding music and the very tight game play controls and it's a blast.

I can't believe what a complete package this game seems to be (so far). I'm incredibly impressed with the main menu - the idea of there being a fully-modeled, gorgeous 3D mountain in the main menu in a side-scrolling pixel art platformer is insane to me. It's such a nice little touch.

I'm just overcome with happiness playing this game. A couple of things I like is how the game doesn't tell you what the mechanics are. You have to experiment and learn for yourself. Like for example:

I had to find out for myself that the green jewels let you get an extra dash. And I had to find out for myself that the weird inter-dimensional blocks need to be dashed into (and whenever you do so, you get a free extra dash to perform afterward).

I'm only up to the second level but I can already see why this game is getting such reviews.

so outside of the outstanding gameplay, I have to say the story needs to get a mention from me. I'm only up to level 3 and haven't uncovered all of the story and I'm actively avoiding spoilers but i'm fairly sure the story deals with themes of

mental illness and or depression. this is not something I suffer from or care about and I think it's relevant to my next non spoilery bit

So far I think it's done extremely well and has me actively engaged in 'what's going on' I hope it continues like that and stays away from heavy handedness.

I just finished chapter six and am having a break for the day.

My hands are sore and I am sweaty but I was smiles the entire time. This is a remarkable game. I am in love with it.

I also love the narrative and overall story. It's fantastically done.

Chapter six's ending goes on for way, way, waaaay too long. Not to knock the platforming but half of those "rooms" could have been combined or eliminated for redundancy. The music and the story carry a large part of it for me but this was the first time the game felt heavy handed to me. The writing takes a weirdly simplified turn at the end of this section too. It doesn't bring the game down for me overall but I think it's a weak link in an otherwise great package.

It's mainly
anxiety and some depression, yeah.
I agree that the lack of heavy-handedness is what's allowed me to enjoy and relate with the story much more than other games that have attempted to tackle said themes.

Any news yet on how well this has performed? I'm intrigued to know the platform breakdown.

Unfortunately I'm not on Twitter which is mainly where these things seem to get announced.

I'm not sure, BUT it is #1 on the Canadian eShop charts finally pushing Stardew down, and that seems awesome. I realllllly hope it's selling well everywhere, though.

Don't suppose there's been any word on remapping controls? Seems a weird thing to not be in a game these days and it's making it very difficult to play.

I'm sure I'll get it eventually but right now I seem to have muscle memory from something else and so I'm constantly dashing when I want to jump and vice versa because the controls feel the wrong way around. Dying so much without any need =(

My guess is that it sold best on Switch and worst on Xbox. PC and PS4 probably somewhere in the middle. Who knows. Maybe we'll get some numbers in a few weeks/months.

That's my assumption, as well. I know I chose to get it on Switch for the portability, but man, those B-sides are extra tough without a real dpad.

You should try playing with the stick. I switched the stick on PS4 and I was actually surprised at how well it plays with it. Probably better than the PS4 d-pad, honestly. And apparently some of the later levels with the d-pad are next to impossible, as per some earlier posts on the last page.

Thanks. I'll give it a shot. I actually ended up doing just that for Cuphead, and it helped a lot.
