Have some new metal to share with you guys. This was a video we just shot recently and released a few days ago. It's about the revenge of Frankenstein's monster! Let me know what you think. \m/

Yea I'd agree with Royal_Flush on the exposure. A little goes a long way and those shots account for far too much of the video. The vocals are definitely not my style but I did dig the intro lol. Sure its been done before but I think it sets a decent tone for the rest of the video. This reminded me of a Black Fast video where their in jamming with their friends and the feel of that and this is that your in with the band which makes it a bit more intimate.

Any love for Heaven Shall Burn? My vote for best metalcore act out there. I wish they would tour the US more often.

I'm conflicted. I've seen them three times at festivals. Two times they sucked a lot, the third one was amazing. I like their style which is almost melo-death. I think the main problem is the singer. He just isn't a good vocalist. A friend of mine was at a concert they co-headlined with Parkway Drive. They switched singers for a couple of songs and he said that improved the HSB gig by a lot. When the HSB singer fronted Parkway Drive he said they lost a lot of their appeal. HSB also has very inconsistent output. "Endzeit" for example is one of the most amazing songs I know (If you ever want me to lose one of those "try not to headbang" challenges you have to play me that one), while I just don't care for a lot of their other stuff.

There are many metalcore bands I like more. Parkway Drive (at least the Ire album), Caliban, Architects are what come to mind instantly.

I have noticed a trend last few years of lots of other metal genres being blackened, I mean it's not new and you kind of got blackened doom/sludge metal from the 90s on wards, as well as black death metal, but then it kind of disappeared for a while and now again seeing a resurgence, even Neige kickstarted that whole blackened shoegaze (blackgaze) genre too.

Noticed it too, I don't mind it I think it can add a lot to a band overall sound

I didn't even know blackened speed metal was a thing until this came along lol

Witchtrap are a blackend speed band, more so than thrash. Their album Vengeance Is My Name is a genre highlight

Song is pretty cool, though I do think the intro goes on about 40 seconds longer than it needs to. I also wonder, early on when the drums are kind of by themselves, they sound a little...like they're missing some umph. Not sure what it is exactly.

But otherwise it was a swell enough song.

Where do you guys find your new music?
My main source nowadays are youtube's and spotify's recommendation algorithm. This thread and a general music thread on a different, small forum are the only other places I get new artists from. Works pretty well for me, even for discovering completely new genres (Which happened a lot for me; I've been expanding my palette like crazy the past two years). Youtube got me into Post-Rock and Lofi Hip Hop, spotify and the other thread into Indie. Here I find all kind of interesting metal bands between the oldschool stuff, Youtube most of the time has at least one good band similar to the one you are listening to right now in its sidebar and spotify also always presents me with new, small metal bands.

Thanks all. Much appreciated feedback, and yes we are an unsigned band with basically no budget for such things as music videos, but we do what we can. It helps a lot believe or not. hah

This is a super weird request, but does anyone know where I can digitally purchase the Anthem albums? I heard their (cringe) album Domestic Booty is basically the sequel to Priest's Painkiller. Problem is I can't find any storefront that sells the damn music. I have no need to have the physical CDs but I would like to hear the album.

Looked for that one not long ago myself and found it on youtube. Didn't look any further.

This isn't metal at all but I think you guys could appreciate it nonetheless. This is an amazing solo guitarist called Estas Tonne, I found some videos of him on youtube by chance. His music is what I've mostly been listening to for the last couple of weeks. If you're a fan of skilled guitarists it's worth giving this a listen.

I normally abhor listening to music on youtube but I guess that's a good start to see if it's worth the premium of hunting down the discs themselves.

It also seems impossible to search for since the name "Anthem" seems to come up quite a bit. I guess EA may have it a bit better since it's a much less used name in the game space.

fuck yeah everyone should listen to Ares Kingdom. The dissolution of Order from Chaos created many great projects and everything from Ares Kingdom is killer. Chuck is a madman on the guitar.

Video not available :(

I like black/speed, but honestly... black/thrash is where it's at. Absu, Melechesh, Desaster, Deströyer 666, Craven Idol, Nifelheim... fuck yeah.

Back to Death talk for a minute. They were the absolute mark of consistency. I keep wanting to pick a favorite album but their all so well done its hard to choose. Going through the entire discography over the course of a day or two is pretty fascinating to see just how solid they really were and the slow shift to a more progressive sound is pretty neat too. I can see where their later material becomes a bit wanky but I love how the songs get in a groove and just jam for a bit from Individual Thought Patterns on. There is a cover of God of Thunder on this Human reissue that is pretty bad ass but that Painkiller cover is just ass. The drums just don't sound right. There's some odd stutter that drives me nuts and Chuck's vocal on the whole album are really just too screechy for my taste. I do like TSoP album overall though.

Now the bass and drums are pretty damn good on all the albums. Sure the guitar is good, blah blah but sitting here with a halfway decent stereo, those drums pop and that bass is really clear. The latter albums really have some intricate bass work by the sound and it's too bad I'm not interested in playing anymore because I'd love to learn some of these songs.

I'm glad someone else hates that Painkiller cover. I always see people fawn over it and it's fucking garbage in my view.

Painkiller is my favorite Priest album so making a bad version of any of it doesn't set well lol

There's a higher ceiling there with some better riffs and material. I would bet after 3-4 years of writing and recording at a good clip as your influences evolve, you'll get there. What I'm hearing is some Pantera and a traditional American underground metal sound, and playing that straight while also having something to say that draws attention beyond your local scene while moving past the local band sound is a pretty tough road. As you write new riffs and material, try to push beyond the trappings of your more traditional influences and be adventurous.

SONG OF THE DAY

Saw The Skull last night in Toronto. They played Trouble's classic self-titled album in it's entirety, along with a couple of super-heavy original songs.

To celebrate the fact that Eric Wagner can still belt out the classics, here's Black Shapes of Doom.

Thanks for taking the time to check it out. We're all pretty seasoned at this point as we've been doing this for many years, so for better or worse what you're hearing is what we ourselves are into and want to listen to. We all have a ton of influences and tastes, pretty diverse in fact, everything from death metal to blues, classic rock, slam, groove metal, etc.. That translates into our music in interesting ways and there is a lot of experimentation. With this song, in that moment, we wanted to make a pretty straight to the point, a groove infused tune that kind of drives forward with a little intensity/energy. We weren't really interested in getting overly technical or complicated with it. However, that is one track on an album that varies, sometimes pretty drastically, from song to song. We even did a pretty neat Black Sabbath cover of "Into the Void" (just to kind of give you the idea of where we land musically and some of our inspiration). You can check it out on Youtube if curious. If you're into Black Sabbath you may like it? ;)

Great cover, Into the Void is a legendary riff monster track. You guys definitely show that you have some work under your belt.

In fairness as you put yourself out there and I was critical, here's my stuff (not metal warning)

I don't know if you would call it metal or rock, but I'm really digging the Phil Campbell and The Bastard Sons record.

Southern Lord gonna Southern Lord. Another good year up for one of my favorite labels. That Centuries record is a beast.

So I listened to all of your music today while finishing my last hour of work. Not typically the style I'm into but I actually did enjoy it. Even followed your page. If I were to give any critiques it would probably be the mix levels were a little wonky where I couldn't hear some things and others popped out too much, but my shitty PC speakers at work aren't helping the situation. Anyway, minor gripe. Good stuff.

Cheers. \m/

Little envious of those sharing stuff, firstly because they have stuff to share, but also because sharing is hard. I'm working on music too--trying for some symphonic death metal stuff--but I'm very much hampered by my abilities and equipment. Also everything is a VST because I can't play the guitar. Or drums. Or piano. Or violin. Or whatever that synth is that sounds like multiple violins going off at once but not quite...

So while I'm pretty happy with how these songs are shaping up, I also know they don't sound like actual metal songs. Better VSTs will help (I got my eyes on Shredage 2), but even then, that'll only go so far. It's a passion project for me that I'll probably give away for free or something when I'm done with it.

Learning how to death growl has been fucking awesome though, so there's that.

Where do you practice? Or do you just not give a damn what your neighbors may think? Because tbh, that's my current excuse for not doing it.

I learned growling along to music in my car while driving. I actually think I'm pretty good at a lot of different styles but I'm too lazy to join or form a band.

I wanna record stupid/non-serious (but possibly some cool/serious) stuff with this thread. I can contribute actual drums and guitar. I record direct from my Roland Cube amp for guitar, and drums I usually just capture with one condenser but I'm currently trying to use a more sophisticated setup with 2 condensers + 2 dynamics. I have the house to myself this weekend and will try to get something done. I can impersonate Pete Helmkamp and Ross Dolan decently, but only for like minutes at a time before my voice gets trashed lol.

I'm in a duplex, and my neighbor is a nurse who works odd hours. She's almost never home. So at home is usually viable. I also practice a lot at work when I'm on my lunch break. I go for walks and once I"m a block away, I can just start roaring.

Though to be honest, I'm not THAT loud when I do it. It's possible I'm still not quite doing it right, given that after about a half hour I have to stop because my throat is so damn agitated. Less painful and more sandpaper. But the noises I make sound pretty alright. I'm not unhappy with them.

This too. In the car. I found that learning to rock music with zero growling at all was better than to death metal, since I have a bad habit of trying to mimic. Like, I found my false chords listening to fucking Jorn of all people :P

Been super into Rings of Saturn and The Faceless lately.

Being a drummer myself I love bands with talented drummers (probably the biggest reason I love metal) and the technicality in both of these bands is just insane.

Edit: Oh, and Alterbeast too. Goooood shit.
