After my first 3 hours of testing the steam controller I came to the following conclusions:
  • The left trackpad is completely useless as a d-pad for 2D platformers. On the bright side, as a hotkey button area it outclasses a traditional d-pad when using it as a in-game touch menu.
  • The camera control/aiming with the right trackpad is better than the one with an analog stick (tested with Doom, Talos Principle, Portal and Witcher 3). Still nowhere near as good as a mouse.
  • The bumpers on the back should be 4 instead of 2. I can think a lot of games that could use more hotkeys. Also, not a big fan of their ergonomics.
  • While it can easily be used for strategy games like Civ, it will probably require a lot of practice in order to get proficient with a fast paced RTS. Also more hotkeys wouldn't hurt.
All and all I can definitely see myself using it as my default gamepad in the future.

Are many of the puzzles changed and how is the overall vr immersion?

I last played the 2D version at launch so I couldn't say 100% for certain but it seems like it's mostly the same puzzles - perhaps slightly updated for VR convenience here and there, but don't go in expecting brand new content. That said, if you have a memory like mine, they might as well be as I still find myself working them out again!

The immersion is fantastic - the devs really know their VR by now and it shows in how tactile the interaction is with the computer basestations and puzzle objects. One of the reasons I enjoyed the game originally was how satisfyingly physical it was to solve the puzzles, and when you're actually placing the stuff yourself in VR that feeling is massively enhanced. The environments feel great to move around - and that WIRWIRWIRWIRWIR of a drone sphere popping open when you find yourself too close to it is butt-clenching all over again.

I would definitely recommend it.

I haven't done all that much customizing with my Steam Controller yet, but I think you can configure it so that holding a button/trigger gives new actions to other button. Like the face buttons get different purposes when you hold a trigger or something. I think you can get a lot of hotkeys out of the controller that way.

I've seen people suggest using the stick with haptics set to high and tightly defined deadzone as an arcade stick replacement.
(Given I have both a proper dpad pad and an arcade stick, I didn't feel the need to test this out).
As for hotkeys, that's what action sets, activators and radial menus are for.

Yeah, I did notice that option while customizing the layout, but it sounds a bit cumbersome in practice. Regardless, I will give it a shot.

I already tried that. Unfortunately, I didn't like the feedback enough.

where my dark theme at (I know theres a mod or something) :(

Dark Theme:

Our frontend team has recruited additional help and is now hard at work on future updates. We can now confirm that ResetEra v1.2 will contain the much anticipated dark theme. However, given the importance of this feature, we want to take our time and make sure that we do it right. Our current estimated timeframe for delivery is 1 to 2 weeks.

Yeah, looking back it seems that jshackles organized the last 3 Steam GOTY votes.
I believe that I recall MRORANGE mentioning doing it this year, but I could be mistaken.
If not, then I am willing to help organize it.

I've played a few hours, but it feels like there is much trial-and-error involved compared to previous games by the same developer. Or am I just failing to deduce the right answers?

Epistory is a such a fun, beautiful game. Any other games based on typing mechanics on Steam?

Oh and I have Typing of the Dead: Overkill which I also love.

No trial-and-error what so ever. If you are having trouble, get a piece of paper, and write all possible solutions for a line. If none of your solutions uses one cell, you can cross that cell out, if one cell is used for all your solutions, you can check that cell. This gives you more information how to (partly) solve the next line :)

CrossCells is really good, but I feel it would have been better with a few more marking options. I ended up playing the game by taking screenshots and drawing over it in GIMP. It felt better to visualize the process. Example of what I mean.

Writing down the possible solutions is a good suggestion. Thanks!
I certainly couldn't manage to keep all the possible solutions in my head, which is what I was attempting.

Have you ever played SquareLogic? I just realized how similar the two games are, excepting that SquareLogic has QOL stuff to save you from having to keep notes.

Nabs, you reminded me. Cross *Code* is at version 0.9.7, released mid October. Link
The last announcement was that 1.0 should be out last September, but the Steam forums are pretty positive with what's released already. Good stuff.

Oops, Alyssa. I didn't see your first mention of CrossCells. I didn't mean to leave you out.

true, it's very bare bones, but I love the minimalistic approach / design. And picked the game up for about 1 euro, so I can't complain ;)

for levels 1 to 30, its fairly easy to manage in your head, after that its impossible without a pen and paper for me.

Never played SquareLogic, but thanks for the suggestion, will check it out :)

For this year, how about we add another category, '2016 Backlog GOTY'?

We all have backlog of games from the previous year, surely.

Just 3 games would be sufficient, I think.

I recently played Doom 2016 with it and it was great. It takes a while to get used to, but trackpad + gyro aiming is good.

Yeah, you can go and improve your weapon before dealing with them. It helps a lot. I believe you got a new skill when you got to the Mantis area, you can use that to get out of there and into the new place.

Those are all very reasonable conclusions to draw, and similar to my own.

I've thought about it, but I'm not sure if adding more grip buttons would be better. I think part of the reason it works well is because you can simply squeeze without having to worry bout where your fingers are positioned, though with slightly different controller ergonomics it might work.

It's a great controller to use for Dolphin too.

The Steam Controller's lack of DPAD is one of the primary reasons why I sold mine.
The other reasons were the need to find and learn suitable profiles for every game, and the realization that I simply prefer gaming at a desk instead of in front of a TV.
Great controller otherwise. The trackpads and paddles were really nice.
