Having a Backlog o 700+ games, it is a difficult task for me....
But if I can manage somehow, I will try fill this Post.

QuickQuestion: How we count the games which are free to play?
I add them if I intend to play them. Multiplayer only titles are a little tricky to "beat" but I mark them as such when I feel like I won't play them anymore or if I've reached a certain goal I'd set for myself.
I can do it tonight (in about 12 hours). It only takes me five minutes but I need to use a Unix computer to create the images.
No rush if you're still getting entries, I'm just looking forward to seeing how we've all done.

I decided to add Starblood Arena from the PS+ games to my Backlog. This game is a lot of fun in short bursts. It's an online-game so I will play it while it is fun and set it to "beaten" eventually. I bought Doom VR retail for 17€ - that's hard to skip for that price. I really love VR :)

Current state is -1 for me. Still good ;)

Is there a consensus on how to approach DLC/expansions for this?
The only real rule is that anything that gives a plus also have to give you a minus when you get it. So if you buy Game X with 3 DLCs and want to count it as 4+, it also needs to be a 4- (if you bought it after starting the "challenge").

I usually only count big DLCs separately, pretty much only stuff that are expandalones (The Last of Us: Left Behind is an example of that) or proper expansions (Like Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls). I will not count Witcher 3 expansions tho because I will "integrate" them into the game. So it's just up to you basically!

In addition to what Spyware just wrote, I'd say that it matters when you got the DLC. If you bought it together with the game (a personal example being Witcher 3 GOTY Edition) I might not count it. If instead you pick it up after beating the actual game, it might feel relevant.

In the end though, I don't feel there are any real rules per se here. It's all about keeping the process and thread positive.

Oh, I didn't realize OP had been updated with results. I think the new graphs are much easier to read than the old ones. Good job archnemesis.

[Edit: Hold on... I think I have either entered the form wrong or something is off in the transition to excel. I went +19, not 39... ]

Here is a question.
If you buy a game collection. Say the Crash collection. Does that count as one or as 3?

I gave you a +1 for each game you removed as well, since they are gone from your backlog. Here is a plot showing the summed score below and the added/completed/removed split above.
That's why I don't add removed games to the stats btw.
If I was counting from what my total backlog is every year (this year I would start at -388 for example) every removed game would count since removing them would directly influence that number. But since I start every year at 0, only beaten games count as plus for me. The removed games just help make the remaining backlog smaller, in silence.
I want every + to be something I achieved.

I do not at all mind others doing it differently tho, just explaining my reason for my way of counting it. :)

First +1 of the year - Finished The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky - playthrough clocked at 52 hours.

It's a good game, if a bit heavy on the cliche melodrama. I also picked up the second chapter during the end of year Steam Sale and will play it at some point, but I need a bit of a palette cleanser after such a long game.

Had a productive weekend with beating Fallout 4, Doom VFR and One Piece: Burning Blood. Now at +2 for this year :)
I will get Monster Hunter Worlds this week, so it will be back to +1, but still good.

Currently working on Stein's Gate, Skyrim VR, Dragon's Dogma HD, Bravely Default, Tales from the Borderlands, Raw Data, Thumper, Planescape Torment EE and some more ... ;-)

Cancelt Nioh and Monster Monpiece this weekend. Nioh is good and I might get back to at later, but I got too exhausting and repetitive for me.
Monster Monpiece simply isn't a very good or engaging game IMO.

Question, now that Gamepass is going to likely be a bigger "thing" are we counting games on it like we do for GwG and PS+ games? (i.e. no net change in score?)

I would think its the same principle.

With 5 days left, most of them being occupied by work, I can't see my January looking any different in terms of beat/bought than it is today, with DBFZ being the most recent purchase.

January 2018:
Bought: 5

-1 Tales of Berseria
-1 Dragon Ball FighterZ
-1 Gravity Rush
-1 Gravity Rush 2
-1 Tales of Zesteria

Beaten: 5, including 4 from the near-top of the backlog
+1 Blossom Tales - The Sleeping King
+1 Cat Quest
+1 The Next Penelope: Race to Odysseus
+1 Tales of Berseria
+1 The Mummy: Demastered

Total score: 0
I'm fairly confident at least two of those new additions (GR2 and Zesteria) won't be marked back off for a while, since I know I can't really play through multiple games from the same franchise so close to one another without burning out, Berseria was enough for my RPG fix for a bit, and whilst I know GR2 is a noted upgrade to it's original, it's still gonna have to wait. Let's see what February brings, eh?

Question, now that Gamepass is going to likely be a bigger "thing" are we counting games on it like we do for GwG and PS+ games? (i.e. no net change in score?)

I would think its the same principle.

Curious too, but I'm gonna just go off the principle that it's a game I still got, technically for the price of the PS+ subscription, so I'll definitely be adding them to my bought score as I go. Just sucks for me that I already played TT Batman and Deus Ex :(

I would think its the same principle.

I would count it the same as I so PS+ and GWG... if I start playing the game I'll add it, otherwise I leave it off the backlog. I want the free games to count for and against my score if I *actually* add it to the backlog, but there's plenty of free games that I'll never play so I never add them in the first place.

But, what you decide is fine, as long as you're consistent :)

Here is a question.
If you buy a game collection. Say the Crash collection. Does that count as one or as 3?

I know I'm late on this, but it depends on what you want to do. I would personally count it -3, and then each one I beat is +1, eventually getting to +3. Some people count the whole collection as -1, but then you only get +1 when you beat all the games in the collection.

Again, your choice, provided you're consistent in scoring. Don't say it's -1 and then give you a total of +3 when you beat them all :p

For the sake of transparency... I just got Forza Horizon 3 with the Matchbox DLC, but I got it mostly for my son so I'm not counting it.

For now.

WHEN I start to play (which is extremely likely to happen) I'll add it in to my backlog. I have so many games like this. Especially on the Switch. Grrr...

Whew, long month. I've set myself the goal to beat the KH series before KH3 comes out and I've now completed two of the main games, with three to go. I combined all the RE7 DLC together into one purchase and completion, cause a) They're each fairly short and b) I'm lazy. I absolutely love what Capcom did with that DLC though, they really experiment with the core gameplay with each mode and they're all fantastic. It's really cool. I also finished Dragon Quest V, which has been sitting in my backlog for years and was as amazing as I'd been told, and The Silver Case, which is a weird and kinda disjointed story but still very interesting and I ended up liking it.

Right now, I've just started my second playthrough of Night in the Woods (great game) and am also playing UFC, which I bought back in 2014, played for 10 minutes and put back on the shelf because I didn't have the patience to learn its weird grappling mechanics. This time, I've actually put some time into learning the mechanics and am actually having some fun with it, though it can still be quite frustrating.

And as always, a huge thanks to archnemesis for keeping these threads going and compiling the end of year data.

A pretty great start to the year albeit with plenty of short games. My aim for this year is to get through some of the shorter games in my backlog and then tackle some of the beefier games once I get below 500, only another 67 to go..... One thing this month has taught me is I'm not a fan at all of horror games, Amnesia is way too much for me.

January Update:

Digging a hole to start the year, as usual. That said, God of War is probably my first "must have" game of 2018, so I may focus on my backlog until then. Lotta good, big stuff coming up in the queue. I also added the SNES Classic games that I plan to do this year only (rather than dumping all 20+ of those games into my backlog, since I don't know which ones I'm going to do at this point), and I expect to be chipping away at Skyrim for a while. Started Nioh a couple weekends back and played a dozen hours or so, but haven't gotten back to it yet. I'm liking it quite a bit so far, but I just needed a quick break away from playing games. Looking forward to playing more this weekend.

Bought (-7):
  1. Gorogoa (Switch)
  2. Nioh (PS4)
  3. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Switch)
  4. Yakuza Kiwami (PS4)
  5. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES Classic)
  6. Super Mario World (SNES Classic)
  7. Donkey Kong Country (SNES Classic)
Beaten (+2):
  1. Gorogoa (Switch)
  2. Cuphead (XBO)
Currently Playing:

  2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Switch)

New Game Total - -2

Beat Games Total - +11
January 2018 Backlog Blitz Total: +11 -2 = +9

A decent start to the year, here. I had planned on beating a couple more games, but... then I bought Monster Hunter so there goes my progress for a while. For February I had originally planned on buy a FFXIV sub and working through the expansions, but... I have Monster Hunter so that'll probably take up a lot of my game time. I don't plan on buying anything unless it's on sale, so my new game totals shouldn't be going up much, at least. Mainly besides Monster Hunter, I'll probably try to finish my Darkest Dungeon playthrough and work on some shorter Steam games, to hopefully keep my + streak strong. I always need that buffer for the summertime slump...

February Update

New Games (-):
Under Night In-Birth: Exe Late[st]
Mercenaries Saga Chronicles (3 game collection)

New Game Total - -4

Beat Games (+):
Under Night In-Birth: Exe Late[st]
BlazBlue: Centralfiction
Picross S

Beat Games Total - +3

Removed Games (Net 0)
Uncharted 2
Uncharted 3
Sunset Overdrive

Removed Games Total - 3

February 2018 Backlog Blitz Total: +3 -4 = -1

Backlog Notes:
Uncharted games - Games like Uncharted and the newer Tomb Raider titles aren't really for me. I kept the Nathan Drake Collection around only for my boyfriend, and honestly I thought I removed the games from my backlog already. Either way, my boyfriend doesn't want to play them anytime soon, and we can sub to PlayStation Now for a month or two when he does, so I've added the still sealed game to the sell pile.
Sunset Overdrive - The first game I tried out when I got my XBO! However, I only had a little fun with the normal gameplay, and the first defense mission soured me on the game so badly (and that was the easiest one!) that I never had the motivation to pick it up again in six months.

January summary:

The best game I played this month is Steam World Dig 2. I played the prequel and thought it was OK but this one improved on everything. My only complain is a bug I ran into that prevented me from 100% the game. Not restarting it.

Gravity Rush has been a surprise. This was my second attempt at it and it finally clicked. I think I am finally grasping the concept of waifu. I would totally date Kat if I was straight. Fun little game with a very lovable main character. Raven is a bitch.

I'm totally with you on Amnesia. I also finally got around to it this month, and I must say that it's some of the least fun I've ever had with a game.

With that said, I'm fine with horror games that give me a weapon - even if there's not enough ammo to shoot too many enemies. So don't give up just yet.

Holy shit Spyware that is one crazy good score for the month... I will likely never achieve something like that with the games I've got left!

January Update

Well, that was a long month for such an underwhelming update. Not a huge amount of gaming time, and I spent part of it finishing NG+ in Trails of Cold Steel, which I've already beaten so can't really count as backlog. At least I didn't buy anything new?

Currently playing: Yakuza 0, mostly.

OH. FUCKING. NO.

Main OP

I did not finish a single game this month. It wasn't even until the middle of the month I first started playing an actual game for the first time in the year.

Since then, I've been buying like crazy. After rebuying an Xbox One in November during Black Friday, I've been building up my Xbox One collection again. And now in the week-and-a-half before this post going up, I've gotten a 40' Samsung 4K TV, a PS4 Pro, traded my Xbox One S towards and subsequently bought an Xbox One X in the past few days and now most likely today, rebuying a PSVR ahead of Zone of the Enders 2's 4K/VR release in the Spring. And in light of those purchases, I've bought games that bring out the best of each system quite a bit which has added to my tally a ton. Plus with a PSVR purchase today, I'm buying Skyrim VR.

Legit question: someone please do an intervention on me. It's getting out of hand. :<

Not a lot of games in my backlog, but I do have a pile of games I have given up on which I really should give a second chance and games I want to replay. My goal this year is to mostly play those instead of buying new games. So far, so good.

Dude, wtf? :O

Start tracking your spending and maybe seeing it summed up can make you slow down? Hell, maybe you don't need to, but to me that seems completely crazy!

Final January update. I didn't actually buy the DLC of Witcher 3 now, but I was so psyched that I had finally beaten the main story that I wanted to count it, and since I had bought the GOTY edition, this was the only way I felt good about counting it. I should be done with second DLC within a few days too, which will set me free of this game - and I have no idea of how to feel about this. Some parts of this game are absolutely fantastic, others are complete garbage (combat is a total bore at this point, and the menu slow down on PS4 is killing me). I will say that the story of the Hearts of Stone DLC in particular was some of the best I've experienced in a video game ever.

Doubt I'll add a single game for quite a few months, but I see myself clearing out a bunch of 10-ish hour games to clear my head before heading into any other open world games.

Bought in January: 2 games
The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine - PS4
The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone - PS4

Beat in January: 4 games
F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin - PC
F.E.A.R. 3 - PC
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - PS4
The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone - PS4

Quit in January:
5 games
Antichamber - PC
The Darkness II - PC
The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition - PC
Amnesia: The Dark Descent - PC
Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs - PC

Score in January: +2
Bought in 2018: 2 games
Beat in 2018: 4 games

New Games (-4):
~Tacoma
~The Silver Case
~Verdant Skies
~Gleaner Heights
New Game Total = -4

Beat Games (+7):
~Tacoma
~Divinity Original Sin 2
~The Silver Case
~Verdant Skies
~Owlboy
~Rakuen
~Gleaner Heights
Beat Games Total = +7

February Total: -4+7= 3

Retired: Breath of the Wild - Since watching my husband play the majority of the game, I really just haven't had really any inclination to get back to this unfortunately. It's hard for me to enjoy open world games with already knowing the story, since I'm not huge into exploring.
