I can't imagine having two characters in such a grindy game lol
Well, typically an armour set/weapon combo requires farming a specific monster. So, suppose I want an Anja set, I'd have to farm Anja. So on my male hunter I could farm Anja and my female hunter wouldn't bother.
But, of course, there'd still be some overlap in hunts, but that's OK. A hoonter must hoont...

I am really enjoying this game, but that is fucking stupid. I didn't know this was a thing in the Monster Hunter series. Clearly I have always used male characters...
Yeah, the sets in MH are really hit and miss. Take Legiana armor for example, the skirt is so short that the female hunter needs to wear shorts so that you aren't getting constant panty shots from the front and back. There are some great sets though such as the Dodogama armor. I also really like the Zorah Magdaros set.

Christ... I started the game as a female character because I randomly rolled a lady that looked like Robin Wright. Seeing that comparison makes me want to re-roll. Completely ruins the fun of playing as a bad-ass hunter lady when the designers think she should would decide to be half-naked.
Yeah, female version of MH armors can be quite hit or miss indeed. I still kind of crack up at something like the Brachydios armor, which has a weird dress design thing going I guess.
It's a thing among straight women who actually watch and draw porn. There's just way more erotica out there of men for gay men than women, and gay shipping in fandom provides a space to enjoy looking at sexualized men without the particular kind of shame placed on female sexuality (it brings its own problems of fetishization though.) But lol, I doubt it is a thing for "all women"

As Morrigan said, some designs are okay, others not so much. There are staff comments in the art book to the effect that it's their sincere intention to have as much variety in the designs as possible so that anyone will have at least something that they like.

It's funny how some people need to get told "yeah this is a woman, look at her traits" while looking at a character design or armor.
The thing is... they could just be separate armor sets that are skimpy on both sexes.
This sort of dimorphism is completely unnecessary, and at least in my case, actually removed any possibility of me actually considering a purchase. It's blatantly sexist in every way you can think of.
I was really hoping Monster Hunter: World could be the point in which I finally jump into the series. But I'm just not cool with throwing money at these kind of designs. I don't like spending cash just to roll my eyes.

The most I can offer you is the fact that the PC version will almost certainly have mods that "fixes" this. But yeah, it's a Japanese title from a long lived franchise that frames itself on skimpy outfits. You either have to accept that or pass.
They serve me well at times, but they also ensure I play fewer games. XD
I could just make a male character. Plenty of games I like don't even offer female protagonist choice.

Haha, I know it's not "all women". Was just recounting a stereotype of fujoshi that I first heard in Genshiken.
But that's interesting, it sounds like a byproduct of male-focused objectification rather than anything intentional until corporations learned it was financially viable and women in that community became lead creators in those industries.

I really don't recommend it. I'm redoing everything starting from scratch with a male after finding out what the Nerg lady armor looks like (ah yes the battle bikini) and it's a pain.
The worst part is I'd be fine if you could mix and match. I like sexy ninjas! I just don't want it forced on me because I picked a female character model. Why can't we have sexy dude ninjas and samurai ladies? Or Rathian Battle Skirts on dudes?
