Wolfenstein 2 The New Colossus
I was a huge fan of both The New order and old Blood the setup seemed unlikely that BJ would return once again but hey it's an opera told through a glorious soundtrack of violence and resistance, the story is more audacious than anything in cinema in 2017 the routes of discernment that BJ is the true American hero and how he doubts his actions reflect on the passion of his comrades in arms everytime the game messes with your perception of playing a video game you are more aware of what it's trying to do. I cannot praise the audacity enough of how story goes full on into it's universe yes we can discuss spikes in difficulty and before that fantastic final setup I was starting to wonder when will this shooting gallery of every enemy I have destroyed end, however that doesn't remove some of the best moments in gaming are inside that story
Rated a Buy if you want something you can discuss for days after I highly recommend turning your speakers up for a onrush of FPS brutality with a college degree level reflection on the betrayal of democracy

Life is Strange episode 1&2
This counts because my GF is playing it I have completed it and adored it
I actually appreciate watching her since I did buy before the storm and we can play that together later
I find my myself observing the reactions she has as I am tight lipped about everything she chooses to do while excited most for episode 3 reveal
The game outside one huge flaw that is way too video game choice must be exact or suffer the consequences (episode 2)
I enjoy going back to relearn some of the characters who on second look had much more depth than I originally thought
Rated BUY yes the season is not done but since I have been back in this series I definitely recommend this for those demanding a narrative that tells a compelling plot

Currently playing
GF Zelda Breath of the Wild has her good through 2 Divine beast
Me
AC Orgins just saw the major city so far a good 10 hrs in
Bully had this on my ps2 way back playing it on my X I never have gotten this far up to chapter 4 almost 100% on my classes
Walking dead Season 3 seeing this reminded me I need to get back to it

#6 Walking dead season 3 episode 2 tie that binds part 2
Good reveal at the end the rest felt forced I don't like the opening of episode 2 it leaves a hell of a lot of questions about the cliffhanger from episode 1 oh great more irrational character arches because screw it we don't have time to develop personalities this has been a challenge in all telltale games when it misses I see the potential with the unknown backstory but I'm concerned your choices really have no impact so far

#1. The Unfinished Swan 1/1/18
Giant Sparrow has the idea that a fairy tale can be told in a colorless palette of regret and optimal resonance with a shade of baby blue
It's straightforward I appreciate the choices to mix up game play the last section is a great build a puzzle solve the vertical problem the ending doesn't land the way you expect but it's a nice conversation game with your girlfriend at the controls
Wait for Sale it's unique and enjoyable but not a must play $10 for 5-6 hrs is the right purchase point
(Rating system inspired by the best game reviewer around ACG Buy/Wait for Sale /Rent/Never Touch)

2. Telltale The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 1 - Ties That Bind Part 1
1/1/18
It's been 2 years since I played this series quick wrap up adored season 1 (Screw you Kenny) Was lukewarm on season 2 till the end episode
So right away I was happy to see a new character with no past known as of now to sit and contemplate ( the .... Choice is my favorite listen to the characters feel me in on what's occurring while still being accosted for not saying anything )
The actual gameplay investigation and combat are still a bit of a chore to get through and yes early on some big choices seem very swift without considering the consequences
It was a great reveal of Clementine her personality carried through the second half of look I'm here because.... The ending leaves me with questions about approaching episode 2 later this week

What an absolute masterpiece. It's hard to describe what this game did to me, I never expected this game to have such an impact in my life with the story and the main character's background which I can relate a lot. The gameplay is amazing, it's like a mix of Super Meat boy with Metroidvania elements and a Fez coat of paint. The controls are tight, it never feels unfair and the music is gorgeous. This is honestly a GOTY contender for me.

Iconoclasts-pc-cover.jpg

Favorite game of the year so far. Absolutely phenomenal start to finish. The last 1/3 of a game is a rush, and all the bosses are fun while challenging. It is also one of the prettiest games not only in graphics but animations that I have ever played.

10: Iconoclasts (1/30/2018) | 9/10 | PS4 | ~ 18 Hours
# Overall - 9 | Phenomenal action platformer with a great story and bosses
Gameplay - 9.6 | Mechanics, bosses, world are all top notch. One of the prettiest 2D games ever.
Sound - 8 | Most of the tracks are good, with a few great ones.
Story/Online - 10 | A genre not known for a story it goes above and beyond. There is a moment in the game that goes against everything you know about a character and truly made me feel the rush of the moment.
Asking Price- 9.33 | The content there is fantastic and I am going back for another run shortly!

5. Assassin's Creed: Origins - 56 hrs
6. Alwa's Awakening - 9 hrs
7. Candle - 8 hrs
8. Deponia Doomsday - 10 hrs
*9. Iconoclasts - 15 hrs

*11. Celeste - 8 hrs

11 games / 136 hrs / 2018

So, to finalize January, I made a big start for the year. I actually loved all of the above games, minus Deponia Doomsday and The Iniiate, which were just solid. Iconoclasts, Delete and Celeste are especially fantastic. Celeste has a good chance of being in my top ten at the end of the year. I still have a ton of extra stuff to do in that game, but my hands are killing me, so it'll take me a while.

Game 6: Uncharted Drake's Fortune (PS4) (Around 9 Hours) (3/5)

I tried playing through this game many times on PS3, but never got into it. I had all 3 copies of the first 3 games just sitting on my shelf, so what better to do than buy the remastered versions, right? Strange decision, I know, but oh my god, this is one of the best remakes of all time. The game itself looks absolutely beautiful, with some of the best locations in any game out there. The shooting itself feels amazing, and I don't come out of cover looking in a place I shouldn't be. However, this game has it's fair share of flaws. Personally, my favourite parts of the games were jumping around and solving puzzles, but those were broken up by shooting sections. At first they are great fun, but when you take out a group of enemies, just for more to respawn, it gets repetitive. There are some jet ski driving sections and they just feel really bad at times, due to being broken up by having to stop, shoot, move forward a bit, stop, shoot and repeat. Then the end of the game just get's a little weird, check spoilers if you really don't care about the story.

The late game zombies? A terrible addition imo. While they fit the story, they're just so out of place, and can put you in a corner and kill you in about 3 hits. It just gets kind of annoying and makes you stray away from the normal cover playstyle. This is made worse when you combine the zombies and the normal enemies and you're switching between cover and running around trying not to get hit twice by the zombies.

This game has some amazing characters, with Drake being the standout. They all mesh together perfectly and even side villains like Eddy are fun and interesting characters.

While I do have many problems with this game, and at some points there are just mechanics that are forgotten, it's a brilliant start to a series I hope turns out great.

Nope, that wasn't the last update for January! But this is!

eIpc4DA.png

Game #25: Cat Quest
Started 25 Jan. 2018 - Beaten 27 Jan. 2018
Verdict: Nothing special, but it's a nice time-waster.

I want to love this game because it's good at what it does. But I just heavily dislike the use of the fourth wall breaking to beg people to buy/play their other game, and saying things like "This only shows up if Cat Quest gets popular enough!" and so on. Such things rarely work for me. It's definitely nothing special outside of that either. It has simple (but effective and nice) combat, an art style that is "good enough" and it has a lot of walking from point A to B and back to A again. The cat puns are so overdone and simple that I stopped noticing them after just a couple of minutes. But it's a nice "braindead game" to play when you can't really focus on anything more complicated. I have marked it as beaten because I like it enough to want to try out the "Mew Game" modes where you play the game again but with a bunch of restrictions like no armor or no leveling. But since the achievements require you do to a lot of these extra runs I will do that here and there when I feel like it. So all sidequests, the extra grind to level 99 and finishing story mode once will have to do for now.

UZjG9V8.png

Game #26: Madam, You Are Being Hunted
Started 23 Jan. 2018 - Completed 29 Jan. 2018
Verdict: It's hard to describe what makes this good. But it is amazing.

Love it when the name of the game is actually changed when you choose to play a woman. Just like Wondergirl. Anyway, this game is so special! I last played it when it first came out or something and I didn't click with it. It has been updated many, many times since and now I have to say it's simply amazing. It is also very scary at times, especially this Landowner guy in the picture. I love everything about this robot! The game is pretty short, most of my runs I finished it 2-3 in-game hours with a couple of deaths here and there adding 10-30 mins. But I kept coming back for "just one more run", tweaking the settings for generating the world and how many and when the different robots will spawn. And starting with different character types! I kept making it harder and harder but when I got the best stealth rating in a pretty hard run I decided that it would be enough to mark it as completed. I won't stop playing it tho. It's gonna be perfect for that late evening where I have a couple of hours I don't know what to do with. Highly recommended.

First update. With the end of January I completed my first ten. 42 more to go!

10. Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor - Game of the Year Edition (PS4)
When Shadow of War was announced last year, I was so hyped that I bought Shadow of Mordor GOTY to be up to date with the story. Then the lootbox controversy happened and any hype I had was completely gone. Never bought Shadow of War. Ended up with a copy of a first game, so I decided to give it a try.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor
Playtime:
18 hours
Shadow of Mordor feels just like another modern collectathon open world game, but it is an enjoyable experience. Monolith avoided usual trope with content that never felt too bloated. The main star of this game is the Nemesis System. It's unique and interesting, weirdly enough never really explored beyond Middle-Earth series. I liked the gameplay, variety of side-activities and taking the odds against more powerful captains or warchiefs. Everything gets too easy in the second half, though. Story was dissapointing, a final mission was so weak and uninspired. It's sad to say that "weak" and "uninspired" is also something that fits for both of the DLCs.

Lord of the Hunt
Playtime:
3 hours
There is one word that can describe this DLC - dissapointment. It was supposed to continue Tallion's story, but DLC is basically rehash of the main game with some minor improvements. Lord of the Hunt doesn't include any major story missions with cutscenes, everything is purely gameplay related. There are two types of missions - first are with Torvin where he introduce player to new features and the second type is usual killing warchiefs. I liked the whole concept of replacing Warchiefs for Beastmasters, where every leader has some backstory tied to the local beasts in Mordor. That said, Lord of the Hunt had much more potential that was wasted by the developers.

The Bright Lord
Playtime:
3 hours
Oh man... Talk about wasted opportunity. When I saw that a second DLC is about Celebrimbor, I thought it will be used as a way to expand his story that was briefly shown in flashbacks. This is not a case. The Bright Lord is.... well, exactly the same as Lord of the Hunt. But with spiked difficulty and less responsive character movement. There are only two cutscenes. Both were taken directly from the base game. The rest is usual hunt for Warchiefs. Final fight is a little improvement over Shadow of Mordor, but still...

My first update of the year, with 10 games for January... a good start, even if this does include several shorter games!

header.jpg

1. Batman: The Enemy Within - Episode 1: The Enigma (PS4) - 1 January 2018
2. Batman: The Enemy Within - Episode 2: The Pact (PS4) - 1 January 2018
3. Batman: The Enemy Within - Episode 3: The Fractured Mask (PS4) - 1 January 2018
PSN sale pickups in the run-up to Christmas, so I though that I'd get stuck into this series before the holidays come to an end. I think I'd prefer to see a bit more of Batman himself than we do here and the game doesn't really do anything new techincally, but I'm enjoying the story so far and look forward to seeing where it goes from here.

Desert_Strike.png

4. Desert Strike (SNES) - 3 January 2018
I loved the Strike games on Gameboy when I played them many years ago, but haven't until now ever played their full home console equivalents. I'm pleased to find that while the gameplay in Desert Strike isn't overly deep, the game is still just as fun and satisfying as it was, albeit still rather punishingly hard in places - I'm impressed at myself that I was able to beat it when I was younger! It was also quite a pleasant surprise to find that there's a whole extra mission here compared to the Gameboy release. A nice dose of nostalgia at the start of the year, and I'll need to revisit Jungle Strike next. before too long.

Bonus trivia: Amy Hennig (of Naughty Dog/Uncharted fame) has an "additional art" credit for the game!

header.jpg

5. OneShot (Steam) - 4 January 2018
100% of achievements unlocked; 'true' ending, via new game plus and Solstice update. A rather neat puzzle/exploration game, where players guide a child protagonist on a quest to restore light to as dying world. The puzzle gameplay is decent enough, but the game's real strengths come from the story and the concepts underlying this. Most significantly, the game directly acknowledges that it is a game, with the protagonist interacting with the player, and much more than that, but I won't go into detail to avoind spoilers. With a touching and thoughtful plot, this is an experience that will stay with you for a while.

header.jpg

6. Paint it Back (Steam) - 9 January 2018
All puzzles solved on maximum difficulty; all achievements unlocked. Picross is always an addictively compelling type of puzzle game, but this is one of the best implementations that I've played in a long time. This is a charmingly well-presented package with a nice theme around an art gallery setting, and boasting some subtle but really appreciated (optional) quality of life features, such as aiding drawing long straight lines with some auto-correction of mouse inputs. Of course, the puzzles themselves are really the most important part of the package and these live up to the quality of the rest of the game, all being possible to solve without guessing and with some impressive variety and imagination in their subject.

header.jpg

7. Cat Quest (PS4) - 9 Jaguar 2018
Platinum trophy. Cat Quest is an entertaining but fairly shallow action-RPG, with an approachable combat system based strongly around timing - this is implemented in such a way that if you're able to control the timing of attacks and movements to avoid enemy attacks it's rare that any encounter is impossible, with potentially a very satisfying result. The downside is that this can become repetitive quite quickly over extended play sessions - greater incentivisation to experiment with the game's combat magic system would be to the game's benefit. Alongside this, there's some nice variety in the game's equipment/loot system, factoring into combat and the protagonist's stats. Don't come to this game expecting a deep and sophisticated story, but for its generally well-implemented bouts of combat in a very 'cute' setting, Cat Quest is certainly worth giving a chance.

header.jpg

8. Hidden Folks (Steam) - 11 January 2018
All levels completed; 100% of achievements earned. Hidden Folks is a really charming, entirely hand-drawn, 'hidden object' type game, very much in the style of the Where's Wally books. The gameplay is largely based around searching for distinctive people and objects within a series of typically large and complex scenes, grouped according to themes such as snow, desert and forest - but the game remains compelling despite the apparently simple mechanics. Each scene features a lot of interactivity based around clicking on elements within it, from digging holes and parting trees/bushes, to operating switches with a variety of functions, to an extent far in excess of elements that relate directly to the target people/items - the care and attention lavished on the game is clearly evident throughout. The search for your targets is made more interesting by each being accompanied by a short text clue to their location, lending a puzzle-like feeling to many of them - while asmall handful of levels are actually full-blown puzzles rather than the usual people/object search. All told, a really great game.

header.jpg

9. Batman: The Enemy Within - Episode 4: What Ails You (PS4) - 28 January 2018
Another decent episode that progresses the story significantly, in interesting ways, but some what short.

Bot_W.jpg

10. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: DLC 1+2 (Switch) - 28 January 2018
Finally I've found the time to return to this masterpiece, after beating the main game back in 2017. Alongside completing all quests (base game and expansion) aside from Trial of the Sword, I've collected all armour pieces (base game and expansion) and completed the Hyrule Compendium, though I've called it a day on going after all 900 Korok seeds. The expansion content builds meaningfully on the main game, with both some nice quality of life improvement and, particularly in DLC pack 2, some interesting changes in gameplay formula.

5. Robinson: The Journey (PS4 / PSVR) - 2.5 hours
This game is one of the best looking PSVR games it's killed by the incredibly vague puzzles/objectives and a painful stealth sequence near the end. I had to use YouTube to get past quite a few bits because I felt like the game wasn't respecting my time even though it was incredibly short. 5/10 mainly because the aesthetic is great. Shame about the rest.

Main Post here.

Finished my ninth game for the month last night - Gorogoa.

Enjoyed it, but I do think they could have taken the concept a lot further. Would love to see a follow up in the future! The handrawn art really gave the game a lot of charm.

Solid 7.5/10

10. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia [4/6/17 - 02/02/18]
oja1eXb.jpg

~66 hours after finishing DLC. 8.5/10

I've been kind of down on the Fire Emblem series for the last few years. I'm one of the old purists who isn't liking the direction the series has been trending towards with Awakening and Fates, while also recognising that it's the only reason we're getting new games at all. This game alleviated some of those concerns though, and I now have a much more positive outlook on the series again.

The artstyle is perfection. I would love for the series to stick with this artist permanently. The story was actually surprisingly solid, and this is easily one of the best cast of characters in years. I would say it's stronger overall than Path of Radiance, although to be fair I think the voice acting plays a huge part in that. It's a goddamn revelation. This is one of the best voice casts I've ever heard. Almost everyone is fantastic, and it really elevates the material.

Yes, the maps are absolutely terrible, but a Fire Emblem game lives or dies on its characters being interesting imo. If the next game is the perfect marriage of Echoes and Conquest, we'll be in for a real treat.

Replays of old games and playing a bunch of short games has me thinking I may actually win this challenge for once. Granted, it's only just about to be February, who knows what the rest of the year may bring. (edit: originally this post started at #4)

1. Pokemon Red Randomized - 10 hours 27 minutes, Jan 1st
I really only had about an hour left to beat this one but I was too tired on the 31st to finish it, so here we are. This was a randomizer hack I was playing through with friends that included Pokemon from each Gen up until 6. My final team was Slaking, Hawlucha, Scolipede, Chandelure, Zebstrika, and Wailord. Naturally, Slaking without Truant was a complete monster.

2. Star Wars Battlefront 2 - [5/10] 6ish hours, Jan 3rd
Didn't touch the multiplayer, won't touch the multiplayer. Flat out not interested. Played the campaign... there were shades of a decent campaign in here. Hell, give me a whole game based on the Lando mission, that'd be great actually. Lando mission was easily the high point of the game for me, he had really great mechanics that actually worked well with the level design (unlike the bizarre Luke mission of fighting bugs, or any of the awful flying missions). It basically veered back and forth between being fun and awful, and the story was just horribly paced and really not great. "Hey what if you play a mission where Leia fails to really do anything until the deus ex machina bomb goes off and makes her win anyhow", "hey what if you had 2 minutes of fun Luke gameplay and then he fights a bunch of shitty bugs," "let's open the game with a droid stealth mission"... but hey they did Lando right, so at least there's that. Might do Resurrection because it's free before I uninstall this game and forget about it.

3. Donkey Kong Country - 2 hours 57 minutes, Jan 4th
Just a quick replay of one of my favorites to pass the time through this crazy blizzard. 70% completion, I really need to go for a 100% completion run someday.

4. Yoshi's Island - 6ish hours, Jan 11th
Just replaying an old favorite. Did a lot of that this month, just felt right to. I was doing this as a casual run through the game without caring about collecting everything, but I ended up 100%ing World 6 without really intending to.

5. Donkey Kong Country 2 - 3ish hours, Jan 23rd
After the Switch port of DKCTF was announced and considering I already played DKC1, I decided I'd just replay the whole series. It's been a few years so hey, why not. Forgot my completion percentage, wanna say it was in the 60s.

6. Donkey Kong Land - [8.5/10] 2 hours 14 minutes, Jan 25th
75% completion. I've actually never played this before and I had no idea it was actually a fully original DKC game. I just assumed the Land games were all ports, partially because the only game I'd played before was Land 2 and I remembered it having the same gimmicks and level names as DKC2. When I learned they were all original games, I decided to add them to my DKC marathon. Really solid game actually, not up to the mainline DKC trilogy's quality but considering its limitations as a handheld sequel series it's actually really good.

7. Donkey Kong Land 2 - [9/10] 2 hours 26 minutes, Jan 29th
61% completion. I used to own this game and I remembered the hot air balloon level... so I assumed the whole series was just a bunch of ports. Nope, even though this uses the same level names and gimmicks, the level layouts are entirely original and different. Guess that's what happens when you don't play a game for 20 years. In fairness though, DKL1 was way more original and different than this game was, there was almost no recycling there at all.

8. Batman: A Telltale Series - [6.5/10] around 8 hours, Jan 31st
Free platinum trophies are nice. What a weird game though. I mostly liked it but it was so thin on content, I don't know how Telltale games are so empty and devoid of stuff to do. It's not even the lack of gameplay, dialogue options and choices are so shallow and thin now. It had a real identity crisis of trying to be an original take on Batman and trying to adhere to established Batman lore, which was detrimental to both. Decently fun and as a freebie from PS+, it was fine. I'd be willing to try out season 2, but I'm lukewarm on this season and the dearth of actually doing stuff has me very unlikely to actually buy it unless it's heavily, heavily discounted.

9. Donkey Kong Country 3 - 3 hours 30 minutes, Feb 1st
63% completion. It's my least favorite DKC game but I do still love it. I think the soundtrack is a big part of that, I don't think the soundtrack is anywhere near as memorable or good sounding as the first two games. It's decent music but something just feels a bit... off to me. Same goes for the gimmicks in the levels, they're generally fine but a lot of levels feel like they have a gimmick tossed in purely to try and add a bit more life to some uninspired levels (poison pipeline comes to mind) rather than because the gimmick was a good idea.

First update of the year.

Main post|Backlog Blitz main post

Umm...nothing. I finished nothing in January. It wasn't until the middle of January I started playing something, but I've not finished a single game this month. Hell, I bulked up and bought a ton of games to my collection to mark getting a PS4 Pro and Xbox One X this month as well plus I'm possibly picking up a PSVR again later today with Skyrim VR ahead of Zone of the Enders 2's 4K/VR release in the Spring. And then Shadow of the Colossus next week and the Bayonetta pack for Switch the week after.

Oh no. Stage an intervention for me please.

Only 4 a month, I can do this! I finished 45 games last year. ( Did not count each episode as a game and did not count replays.)

January 2018:
3iqs2rL.jpg

1. Baldur's Gate 1 (PC) - 28 hours. ★★★☆ My Baldur's gate cherry has finally been popped. Great introduction to old-school classics. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it, although kinda ran out of steam at the end.

0Pl3ELb.jpg

2. Prey 2017
(XBO)- 22 hours. ★★★★ This was more enjoyable than I thought. I had my doubts going in since I did not like the demo. Level design is so good.

XokqFPb.jpg

3. South Park: The Fractured but whole
(PS4)- 20 hours. ★★★★ Just as fun as the first game. I like how they did not rehash gameplay and aimed to do something else. Story was silly, enjoyable and managed to clarify a small plot point of the first game.
I have so many long RPGs lining up for next months, Baldur's gate 2, Shadowrun Hong Kong, Pillar of eternity, MonHun World etc. *gulp*

February 2018:
LbxiWrW.jpg

4. Baldur's Gate 2 (PC)- 40 hours. ★★★☆ Must admit the story let me down, I was promised the best RPG of all time. Gameplay was fun, but not as fancy as modern RPGs. Couldn't bring myself to finish Throne of Baal.

bQDutys.jpg

5. Monster Hunter World (PS4)- 100 hours. ★★★★ Surprised of how much I enjoyed it. Great gameplay loop, fun both offline and online. Stopped myself after getting the credits to play other games.

6. Agents of Mayhem
(PS4)- 30 hours. ★★☆☆ As a big fan of Saints Row, disappointed with this game's the direction. Started to get into it around 5 hours mark. Very repetitive. Did not have much to offer in term of contents. It's a shame because some agents are genuinely fun and likable.

March 2018:
iwfr9KA.jpg

7. Undertale (PC)- 8 hours. ★★☆☆ I get why it's popular, but it's not really my thing. Music was really good though. I enjoyed some side characters.

7RIiFIz.jpg

8. Shadowrun Dragonfall (PC)- 28 hours. ★★★★ Basically RTTP. The Shadowrun Returns formula was perfected in this game. Some areas were really intense, especially with the last boss. Really enjoyed the companion NPCs and the choices given to you to complete missions.

6bifTLh.jpg

9. Sacred 3 (PS3)- 12 hours. ★☆☆☆ It's not that good, it's not that bad, the humour was 8 : 2 on miss/hit ratio. Very repetitive but mindlessly entertaining. They put some effort into the boss fights, surprisingly. There was a lot of lags if you chose to play online on the PS3 though. Went through it once was enough for me.

bIHbA80.jpg

10. Shadowrun Hong Kong (PC)- 26 hours. ★★★★ The best RPG I've played this year so far. The companions are all funny, interesting and useful. The story felt really personal. After scouring the underbelly of Hong Kong's cyberpunk-ified cities, I'm surprised not many developers would explore this setting. The final battle of the expansion was really trying and the conclusion was satisfying for me.

April 2018:
IFqUSac.jpg

11. Dark Souls 3 (PS4)- 40+ hours. ★★★★ The pacing is very similar to Bloodborne with the exception of the roll/side step move. The difficulty is still off the roof hard, probably the most difficult time I had with a Soulsborne game. Really enjoyed the Weapon Arts system. Levels are beautiful and comprehensive. Enemies are well designed and paced. When you go through later levels you feel you have enough experience and skill to overcome them without feeling like the game is cheap. I still don't care enough to understand the story, I'm sure it's cool to enthusiasts.

FnQVHqb.jpg

12. Fate / Extella (PS4)- ~20 hours. ★☆☆☆ It's a sequel to Fate/Extra CCC. The story is more enjoyable if you had previous knowledge of Fate/Extra series (CCC is not localised.) It sets after Hakuno has managed to win the Holy Grail War. She is then split into three parts, each part comes with their own Servant. The game retells the story in different perspectives, with a conclusion to tie them all in together. The gameplay is probably the weakest part. It's repetitive, boring and holds no weight. Story comes across as masturbatory sometimes but it's a "harem" genre, so it's hard to fault it for trying. I'd enjoy it more if the game goes back to the Extra gameplay direction.

GjUs1Cw.jpg

13. Matterfall (PS4)- ~4 hours. ★★★☆ Very enjoyable sidescrolling stick-shooter. The game is colourful and fast paced. I like being able to switch up playstyle with the right upgrades/bombs. My favourite combination is: Strike Detonation/Shockwave Radius/Bomb Probability. The only downside is its short length. Later levels are punishing even on default difficulty with very few checkpoints and a lot of annoying enemies. Spawning gets a bit repetitive sometimes and there's not that much variation between levels. Boss fights are somewhat fun and takes a fair enough of endurance/reaction skills to get through them.

cU3PZFn.jpg

14. Ghost Recon: Wildlands (PS4)- ~12 hours. ★★☆☆ This is a bit of a cheat since I haven't "finished" the game and won't attempt to. After 12 hours I felt I had enough to know what the game has to offer and I believe the gameplay loop won't get that different. This is a step down from previous GR games. It IS entertaining with friends, I wouldn't be able to play that much solo. This is The Division all over again, great ideas but too "busy" with samey activities to keep my interest.

Yxr7YZO.jpg

15. Rakuen (PC)- 8 hours. ★★★☆ A JRPG/point 'n click-esque game without a combat mechanic. Finding the right combination of items/locations is a clever way for you to revisit different locations, and each time you'd find a new meaning to the placement of that item/location. It does get boring backtracking but the story/characters managed to hold my interest long enough to complete it. Good game to enjoy at least once.

IOjvkg6.jpg

16. Sea of Thieves (XBO)- 20 hours. ★★☆☆ Despite the lack of contents, SoT has great game mechanics and ideas. It is very enjoyable to play with the right crew where everyone WILL have to put in to even move the ship to the right location. Won't attempt to play it solo though. Feel like I tried everything it has to offer. Will set it aside for now until the next major update.

ecG06IC.jpg

17. SUPERHOT (XBO) - 5 hours. ★★★☆ It actually is a better game than it looks. Very clever use of stop-start time in a shooter. Bullets sometimes move even if you don't so you have to be on your toe and watch out for them from all directions. Shooting feels good and satisfying. There's a new mechanic in the later level that makes the game even better. Oh, before I forget: SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter i've played in years!

EBFB6k9.jpg

18. Star wars: Battlefront 2 (PS4) - 20 hours. ★★★☆ Found this very enjoyable. Although not expertly written, the campaign was very well paced and contained tons of fanservices. There were enough amount of shooting and dogfighting. The multiplayer was very fun in short bursts. Although I felt overpowered by veterans most of the time. There were still many multi modes to enjoy even though I did not buy into the whole progression system. Hero vs Villain and Galatic assault were my personal favourites.

May 2018:
rXEJuPM.jpg

19. Gears of War 4 (XBO)- 12+ hours. ★★☆☆ It was a decent shooter, but dragged on for too long. The initial enemies were not as fun to fight as the Locusts were in the original games. Some new guns were great additions to the franchise though, but the Lancer still has its place in the game. The story was not something to write home about either. Did not try multiplayer though.

xYhjAuB.jpg

20. Bioshock 2 (XBO)- 15 hours. ★★★★ I loved it. It was a much better game than Infinite. It improved the gameplay of the original Bioshock, but the story was not as good. The last few levels felt like a filler, but I still enjoyed it and went out of my way to collect everything. The X360 port was a mess though, a lot of texture glitches.

4q2YwjK.jpg

21. Yakuza 6 (PS4)- 40 hours. ★★★☆ It is not as good as previous games. Yakuza 5 is still the best game in the franchise for me. You can tell the effort of moving it to a new engine means they had to cut some areas in Kamurocho. Some classic mini-games still remain, but the new ones are only decent. The story did not draw me in as much either. It is a decent conclusion of Kiryu's story though. Good game.

June 2018:
TtepW1A.jpg

22. Nidhogg (PS4)- 5 hours. ★★★☆ Super fun party game. Easy to learn, hard to master. It's almost like a game of rock, paper & scissor. The more you play, the more reading you have on your opponent and they also do the same to you.

221UfuP.jpg

23. Hand of Fate 2 (PS4)- 20 hours. ★★★★ This is a massive improvements from the first game. RNGs can still get you sometimes, but you can counter it with the right deck build to improve your chance of success. There are more of everything: more weapons, more enemy types, more armours/artifacts. Each challenge has their own distinctive flavours, all of them requiring you to understand how to build a good deck since goblin build isn't very useful. Some cards are way too useful to leave behind though. If only the dealer would shut up whenever I pick my favourite cards.
Combat is still very repetitive, but not challenging. It's only getting "harder" because the game would throw more enemies at you in later levels, not because the enemies are particularly well designed. I lost more HP to careless mistakes due to boredom rather than difficulty.

LyycrAu.jpg

24. Overcooked (Switch)- 10 hours. ★★★☆ Another fun party game. We spent as much time yelling at each other as cooking. 4 party is the optimal amount to get the most out of this game. Each map has its own gimmicks, not all of them good, but designed well enough so it's not frustrating, especially for casual gamers.

sYSTCaD.jpg

25. Panzer Dragoon Orta (XBO)- 5 hours. ★★☆☆ I'm split between liking it and feeling indifferent towards it. While enemy/level designs are fun to tackle, control is tight and responsive, and the graphic still holds up very well, there were quite a few things I disliked, for example there's no fast switching between 3 different dragon modes, no in-game tutorials and a few frustrating trial & error battles with no checkpoints.

EsBdPXm.jpg

26. DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition (XBO)- 8 hours. ★★★★ Technically this is a replay. I remember enjoying the vanilla on the older consoles. This was really fun anyhow, beated it in 3 sittings. Story is a bit simplistic, but I enjoyed the gameplay, the tone and characters. Apparently this version improved on the original version, but it has been years I can't tell the differences. :/

July 2018:
l8JjC39.jpg

26.5 DmC: Vergil's Downfall (XBO)- 3 hours. ★★★★ I enjoyed this just as much, or a bit more than the original. Vergil's powers take a while to get used to but once you do, you can pull out spectacular, deliberate combos.

yfnymlc.jpg

27. State of Decay 2 (XBO) - 20 hours. ★★★☆ This game is very fun in coop, albeit easier too. They improved a lot from the original, the quest line is a huge step backward though. There was a clearer objective in the original SoD's story. On the other hand, building your settlement and killing zombies have never been more fun.

JI9Q2vK.jpg

28. Guacamelee: Super turbo championship Edition (XBO) - 6 hours. ★★★☆ I don't enjoy platformers very much, so I have no idea why I keep playing them. There was this jumping challenge in Prince of Persia 2013 where you had to freeze and unfreeze water to make it across to the other side. This game was that challenge x 10. It can be very unforgiving, but not impossible. Some arenas in the last level were frustrating. I sort of enjoyed it, I also would recommend it.

3WhiZDg.jpg

29. Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2 (PC) - 11 hours. ★★★☆ This game has never been on my radar and it turned out to be a delightful surprise. Some recipes/restaurant menu were enjoyable to play, the rest, not so much. A good casual game to pass the time.

jPeXjJu.jpg

30. Abzu (XBO) - 3 hours. ★★☆☆ It is very easy to pick up the similarities between Abzu and Journey/Flower, but Abzu is nowhere as good. It is beautiful, but bland and boring. Traversal is not as fun or smooth as Journey or Flower, the relationship with the shark was unclear hence the twist/climax was ultimately pointless.

MaHsdjV.jpg

31. Layers of Fear (XBO) - 4 hours. ★★☆☆ Even though most protagonists in horror movies have plot-armors, those movies can still end up to be thrilling and exciting. It is because most of them are relatable everyday person being placed into extraordinary circumstances where they can be damaged not just physically but mentally. It is really hard to make this concept of an "invincible protagonist" work in a video game where the protagonist has nothing to say, no personality aside from various random/poorly-voiced flashbacks that only show off how sadistic he was.
Layers of Fear is a beautiful art game, with an incredible gimmick where your surrounding shifts as you turn the camera and it is all it is. This game is barely scary, and never managed to create the feeling of dread in its full length of 3-4 hours, that PT, the game that inspired it, did in under an hour.

yYOLj2C.jpg

32. A Way Out (PS4) - 7 hours. ★★☆☆ When you play a shooter game in coop, you'd often come across trivial button prompts where both characters would help each other to go through an obstacle. If you make a full-length game based on these prompts, you would get an easy, boring and forgettable experience. It is how I would describe A Way Out.
The simple dialogue, generic writing and forced action events don't help it either. The twist makes it arguably fun, but it happens way too late into the game.

YXgmMI9.jpg

33. Banjo Kazooie (XBO) - 15 hours. ★★★★ I really, really enjoyed this game. Its graphic might be dated, but almost everything else isn't. Its gameplay is still fun. The world is just big and intricate enough to encourage exploration without making it all too daunting. It has variation in gameplay and pacing.

August 2018:
RMel1Oo.jpg

34. Hidden Agenda (PS4) - 4 hours. ★☆☆☆ It is not as good as Until Dawn: Too short and you can easily break the game by selecting the wrong choices. It's an okay experience with the right party, but that applies to every game.

F8l6En2.jpg

35. Dishonored (PC) - 10 hours. ★★★☆ I finally finished the first Dishonored. While it is not as good as Dishonored 2, I appreciate how Arkane can use the experience from making it to develop a perfect game like D2. Silent Corvo got a bit silly story-wise, but you can role play his personality/morale through his actions.

tMayvIE.jpg

35.2 Dishonored: Knife of Dunwall & Witches of Brigmore (PC) - 6 hours. ★★★☆ I'm a bit apprehensive about the first DLC because the level design was not as good as the main game. The second DLC was much much better with more open/interesting environments.

Y6SyVip.jpg

36. Forza Horizon 3 (XBO) - 40 hours. ★★★★ Sort of a RTTP. All festivals expanded, all races completed, 90% bucket list, some of them in coop. I can finally shelf it for good. The best open-world racer to date, until FH4 release anyway.

IiYGScv.jpg

37. Mafia 3 (PS4) - 18 hours. ★★☆☆ The story, voice acting, facial animations, gameplay, cutscenes direction are some of the best out there. It's a shame about the repetitive mission types. It could have been so good.

4w85bFi.jpg

38. Megaman 10 (XBO) - 2 hours. ★★★☆ Wow, it's really hard!

4uac0cp.jpg

39. Cities Skylines (XBO) - 9 hours. ★★★★ I will be returning to this from time to time. It is very addicting. I like the balance mix between being a simulation and a video game.

5rdRVNU.jpg

40. Dragon Quest Builders (PS4) - 15 hours. ★★★☆ This is another cheat because technically I haven't finished it yet but I've seen enough to stop playing and later chapters are just the first chapter with different skins. I liked how it eased you into building things. Combat is merely okay, it would have been better if you can level up your char as well as town.

September 2018:
MYApkUT.png

41. Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty (PC) - 30 hours. ★★★★ Finished the campaign + many online co-op and versus matches. Very well balanced game. The campaign missions were super fun and diverse too.

October 2018:
nRePaV3.jpg

42. Divinity Original Sin 2 (PC) - 90 hours. ★★★★ Amazing RPG! The first game has the best combat system in all cRPGs and this one just managed to top that. Beautiful music, visual, somewhat seamless coop too. The best game I have finished this year.

qgmcssQ.jpg

43. Ascension + Storms of Soul (PC/Mobile) - 5 hours. ★★★☆ Fun deck building game, easy to pick up and play. I have only played the base + Storms of Soul a few dozens of times so far. I will have to try out other sets soon.

2dFhdez.jpg

44. Tomb of Annihilation (PC) - 7 hours. ★★☆☆ A pick-up and play type of game to kill time. This board game's system has always been a bit iffy to me, digital version added a . It relies too much on chance and dice rolls on "Classic" mode, where you are bombarded with chance Encounters beyond your control. Thankfully there's an Exploration mode that improves the game and makes it more enjoyable.

WbRdUNb.jpg

45. Forza Horizon 4 (XBO) - 40 hours. ★★★★ It is not a huge improvements compared to FH3. I find new progression system makes sense in this series, where you are encouraged to play however you like. Shelved for now, but I will come back for new seasons, weekly challenges etc.

zBXfR7o.jpg

46. Armello (PC) - 5 hours. ★★☆☆ It is an interesting competitive board game with a decent amount of customisations and variety. I enjoyed the art, but it failed to really click with me though.

November - December 2018:
irigQRO.jpg

47. Assassin's Creed: Odyssey (PS4) - 70 hours. ★★★☆ Somewhat repetitive, but beautiful game. The main story was very well-written, to my surprise.

I will rate games in 4★ system:
★★★★ Great game, very happy with the time I spent with it. Would recommend it to people without a beat.
★★★ Good game but got held back from becoming truly great.
★★ Okay game. I could have skipped it and won't miss anything.
★ Not sure why I even played it.

I didn't set out to do this, but I somehow finished 4 games in January and am on pace to complete the challenge. So I figured maybe I'll make a post here and see how I do!

1: SteamWorld Dig (Jan 4) - 7 hours
steamworld_dig_by_vinzppkn.jpg

Unbelievably addictive. I only played it because I'd recently picked up Dig 2 on a friend's recommendation and then remembered I had this thanks to PS Plus. I devoured it in 2 play sessions and couldn't get enough.

2: The Last Guardian (Jan 12) - 13 hours
asdasd-1r4qbu.jpg

Beautiful, moving, powerful. Trico is a real living, breathing animal. He's your best friend and so incredibly emotive. The game was a roller coaster ride, both gameplay-wise and emotionally. It's going to stay with me for a long time.

3: What Remains of Edith Finch (Jan 14) - 2 hours
header95owj.jpg

Outstanding storytelling. It's like a movie that can only be told interactively. Though it's essentially a narrated walking simulator, the story is so beautifully written and masterfully told. And the game design they built into the narrative is pure creative genius. One of the most unique story experiences I've ever had.

4: Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (Jan 30) - 7 hours
uncharted-the-lost-lecwrru.jpg

Pure action summer blockbuster in a video game. It looks and feels like Uncharted 4, for better or for worse. But the characterizations and action and set pieces we've come to expect from Naughty Dog are all there and all top notch. Pure fun from start to end.

5: Super Mario Run (Feb 4) - 2 hours
marioa9r4l.jpg

I wasn't sure this qualified for the challenge but decided it did because a) I spent as much time with it as other games that I included and b) I spent money on it! It's Mobile Mario! The ingenious level design we're used to has been faithfully translated to the convenience of the mobile space. You can play one-handed, in short bursts, or pursue the hours of optional side content. Though Mario runs automatically, the game gets surprisingly challenging in the later levels, especially when going to for 100% completion. There are some surprise gameplay twists thrown in to keep you in your toes and to keep the game refreshing across all 6 worlds. An absolute delight all around.

6: Metroid: Samus Returns (Feb 19) - 17 hours
metroid_samus_returnswzpa9.jpg

An excellent return to the Metroid franchise. And probably the meatiest 2D Metroid by at least 2 fold. At its core it's the same formula we've all known and loved, but Mercury Steam has gone on to add several new elements to keep the action feeling fresh and new. Melee counters add a reflexive element to the combat and raise the stakes for every encounter. The boss encounters aren't terribly varied and do start to overstay their welcome, but it's a shortcoming of the source material more than anything. All in all, great fun and a delectable way to whet the appetite for Metroid 4.

7: SteamWorld Dig 2 (Feb 26) - 11 hours
header9mq6f.jpg

Pure addictive fun. Brings all the great gameplay from the first one and improves upon it in every way. Loads of QoL features, much less cumbersome fast travel, more inventive tools and upgrades, and a bit more character development and story that subtly connects the SteamWorld Dig games to SteamWorld Heist. A much more polished, refined, and expanded SteamWorld.

Main post.

Figured I'd do monthly updates. Here's my January update:

January
1. Gravity Rush 2 (PS4) - 05/01/2018
gravityrush2kysxy.png

I pushed this to the front of my backlog as the servers are going down soon. I finished the main missions/beat the game and collected all of the dusty token rewards. I still plan to go back to the game now and again to complete some side quests that I missed, but for now I'm going to focus on finishing some other games before the GOTY season is over. I really enjoyed my time with the game, and hope that against all odds, we see another game in the franchise in the future.

2. Doki Doki Literature Club (PC) - 07/01/2018
dokidokiliteratureclukkssu.png

I... really didn't enjoy this. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it a little bit more if I had gone into it 100% blind, but I don't think it would have made a significant difference. I felt the writing was really poor, even by visual novel standards. And it handled the delicate subject matter with as much tact as a bull in a china shop. It was so over the top that I didn't even find it creepy, just comical (and I'm someone who is creeped out fairly easily). And that's when I wasn't just flat out bored. Although it does have some interesting and clever ideas, but overall, I felt it was incredibly shallow. It's free and pretty short, so I guess can't complain too much.

3. Pyre (PS4) - 08/01/2018
pyre96s0h.png

I loved this game a lot more than I thought I was going to at first. In fact it's currently in my top 5 games of 2017. I loved almost everything about it. The music (oh, the music), the loveable cast and the sense of responsibility you have over them, the setting and lore, the intensity of the Rites and all of the micromanaging involved between them. The more I played, the more attached I grew to the cast, and at times, the choices I had to make weighed heavily on my heart. I love that your choices matter, and that often, there really isn't a 'right' choice to make. It's always difficult. All in all, this was a fantastically unique game that will stick with me for some time.

4. Gorogoa (PC) - 12/01/2018
gorogoa5ssx8.png

A very short but enjoyable puzzle game that's bursting with creativity. There's not much I can say about this without spoiling it, but I will say that it's one of the most interesting (and beautiful) puzzle games that I have played.

5. Night in the Woods (PS4) - 21/01/2018
nitwwxs7m.png

I was fooled somewhat by the anthropomorphic animal characters and cute art style. This game touched on a lot of difficult subjects, and I was left with a heavy heart when I finished it. Despite that, I really enjoyed my time with this game and had my fair share of laughs with it, too. I can see myself replaying it to get all of the doodles. I finished with 8 pages missing.

6. Batman: The Telltale SerIes (PS4) - 22/01/2018
batmanqtszg.png

Not much to say about this. It was... okay? I liked some aspects of it, but it was pretty mediocre all around. The Wolf Among Us and Tales From the Borderlands remain their best work, imo.

7. Bastion (PS4) - 22/01/2018
bastion8bsmx.png

I decided to buy Bastion and Transistor during the January sale since I fell in love with Pyre, and wanted to check out their earlier works. While I didn't enjoy it as much as Pyre, it was still an enjoyable game with great atmosphere, interesting use of narration and a great OST.

8. Celeste (Switch) - 28/01/2018
celesteows7l.png

As my first 2018 release, this game really did not disappoint. I went into Celeste knowing very little. A little bit about the subject matter of the game, and the basic mechanics outlined in the Nintendo Mini Direct. Oh, and that it was getting a lot of praise. Although I usually dislike having games hyped too much before getting a chance to play them, I'm thankful for it in this case. It wasn't really on my radar before then. Celeste is a beautiful, sweet, charming and challenging platformer that's bursting with creativity. The subject matter is one that hits close to home, so I did anticipate being emotionally invested, but the depth and charm of the characters took me by surprise. Although it can be challenging at times, it never felt overly frustrating for me. Whenever i stumbled, it simply felt like a learning experience.

---

A lot of smaller games, but I've also made decent progress through some longer ones, which I should hopefully finish this month. Hopefully I can keep up the pace.

1. Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch. Story completed, all Shrines, Master Mode beat, all DLC finished, silly photos taken.

A truly beautiful game that did what I need most out of an open world game. A world that I find interesting to explore, art I want to look at, and a fun way to travel and this game delivered greatly on all aspect.
I have my issues with it on some levels such as combat never feeling like there was something to master and an end boss that was a bit of a let down considering all that I had done getting to there, but it's easily my favourite game of last year to have played or just casually look around in.

untitled-2sfus6.jpg

2. Delete for Steam. All puzzles completed.
Alas not more Hexcells/SquareCells like I wanted, but a nice small diversion that scratched some of the same itches and a good potential a fuller package someday I hope.

untitled-1p9sli.jpg

3. Alphabear for iOS. All puzzles completed.
A fun English word based game, where you must turn letters into bears before time runs up and get as many points as you can. I may have never won at multiplayer due to my lack of being able to properly use board space properly for higher scores, I always had fun playing this off and on.

4. Strider for Steam. Story mode and challenges completed.
While a fan of the previous games in the franchise, something about this just felt lacking to me. By no means is it a bad game, it just never gave me a sense of satisfaction for being an ultimate ninja. For it's Metroid like aspects, I couldn't help but feel the abilities and increase in attack abilities came just a bit too late, in a world I didn't really care to backtrack in to get a 100%.

It sorta gave me what I wanted out of the first season of Life is Strange. I sorta missed the time rewind ability and reloaded a few checkpoints because I'm a wuss. Otherwise it made Chloe actually likeable for me. Soundtrack was great, the artstyle I still like but I hope that Squenix gives future games a higher budget because some of the animations are still awkward. 4/5

cupheadiru5j.jpg

The sad thing about Cuphead is that its great gameplay gets overshadowed by the reception of its style and I got to honestly say: without the artstyle I don't know if I would have had the patience for Cuphead. The first two worlds are pretty much perfect as far as I am concerned. In the third there are some bosses with attack pattern combinations which make it impossible to evade without taking damage. And some of the bosses have foreground graphics which block your line of sight on some sections of the screen. Overall Cuphead is a great but not flawless package of style, sound, gameplay and charm which I can only recommend. 4/5

planywj5x.jpg

There is nothing much to say about The Plan. You press W most of the time, think about life and then the game is over after five minutes. It's free and if you need a quick +1 for your 52 games it's worth checking out. No Score but thumbs up

blabvkm7.jpg

A Visual Novel without writing. Well drawn pictures give you a little look in the lives of three children on the other side of the world. Music is nice, too. An experiment by the developer that they offer for free. Also worth checking out. No Score but thumbs up

armgkks3.jpg

By the same team as the previous game. Also a Visual Novel with just pictures and no words. Halfway through the game there is a gameplay twist. I understand the first half but the second goes over my head. Also free, also short, also worth checking out. No Score but thumbs up

passpartoutq8j84.jpg

It's the story mode to MS Paint. It's a relaxing game which you can just get lost in. But my art got pushed by Donald Trump. Now I feel dirty. 3/5

si_wiiu_captaintoadtrolumk.png

Charming puzzle game based on the Captain Toad levels in Super Mario 3D World. The diorama levels are nice to look at but I often had problems with the camera. Neither of the two camera settings are ideal in some situations. Apart from the nice presentation the music is good to hear to, too. I also liked the Arabian theme of many levels. It was a great breaking of pace in 3D World but for my taste Treasure Tracker maybe overstays its welcome a little bit despite it being pretty short. My swan song for the WiiU. Can recommend! 3/5

mgsgzibsgb.jpg

Plays great with Mouse & Keyboard. Looks good, runs well. The main mission is good, the side stuff not so much. Rescued Hideo Kojima. Menu Navigation with no mouse is something I don't like. 3/5

ddlchnsnt.jpg

Visual Novel with a twist that I won't spoil. Didn't take the direction I thought it would but what was there was also good. Didn't flash me though as it did many others. It's free so check it out. 3/5

hobfds5a.jpg

Sometimes a game just resonates with you. For me Hob is one of these games. Playing it its inspirations are pretty obvious with the main ones being top down Zelda games and Ghibli. It gets pretty big framerate dips which are probably both my 970 showing its age and not the best optimization considering what happened to Runic after Hob released. Since the game has a fixed camera there are some perspective issues here and there but nothing to major. It also uses the "show don't tell" approach to telling its story which I'm not that big a fan of since much of the stuff is hidden and then also just implied and open to interpretaion. I would have liked to at least read somethings. Nevertheless the charme of the game showing in its design (I have a weakness for red hoods) of the animals and world and especially the animations just drew me in. Add some nice puzzles to that. 5/5

Decent beat'em-up that is just too long for its own good, esp. when enemies get tougher in the final stages.

So, this is going... well.

I started AC Origins the first week of January & have since bought a Switch, Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, & Monster Hunter: World.

Needless to say, Origins hasn't been completed, but I'm (slowly) making progress on the other 3 games I didn't plan on playing.

So, let's go.
Will put the games I already beat here and after that will create posts for it.

  1. Super Stardust Ultra (01/02, PS4) ★★★
  2. Alienation (01/05, PS4) ★★★½
  3. Nex Machina (01/10, PC) ★★★
  4. Super Mario Odyssey (01/12, NS)
  5. Kirby Super Star (01/13, SNES)
  6. Digimon Story: Hacker's Memory (01/27, PS4)
  7. Vanquish (01/31, PC)

Super Stardust Ultra
: Liked the game, another good one from Housemarque. But it is just too small and the boss repetition doesn't go down well. Also it focuses too much in you using the least fun of the weapons.

Alienation
: Great Housemarque game. Played entirely co-op and it was pure joy to grind for better weapons. Would love to know more games like that, with co-op.

Nex Machina: Didn't think it was as great as everyone but still liked it. A little hard co-op though, I will do a solo gameplay after. Also, didn't like the color usage, it was really confuse sometimes when generally is more easier in that kind of bullet hell games as they use colors in bigger contrast. The camera can be very annoying too in co-op mode. Also, I just liked the more options from Alienation and the RPG-lite elements.

Super Mario Odyssey: A really good Mario. Although I don't like the 64/Sunshine as much as Galaxies/3D World (more straightforward platformers) this one was veeery good. Would enjoyed more if it have more variery on collectibles. Also I think 900 moons are too much. It could be less moons but with more variety and creativity. The levels are very enjoyable tro traverse though, and the camera is not bad as 64/Sunshine cameras.

Kirby Super Star. I really don't like the formula of this game, with mini-games and all so I just got to finish the modes to finally play the next Kirby games. Only finished this, Dream Land, Dream Land 2 and Adevnture. The modes have potential to be something bigger though and the traditional platform mode is enjoyable. The racing one is horrible.

Digimon Story: Hacker's Memory: Pratically a rehash from the first game, literally more of the same. Still good and Digimon is my favorite thing ever so the rate on this one is indeed biased.

Vanquish: Great action game from last gen that I let slip. Platinum Games are so great, the games are so fluid and fun to play. It is probably the first game with over the shoulder camera that I really love gameplay wise.

The Next Games I will put as links, easier to manage I think.

So, end of January update. 6 games completed in January. In the first half of the month, I caught up with a few of last year's games that I'd missed, starting with the slightly disappointing Star Wars: Battlefront II, before playing 2 great games in What Remains of Edith Finch and Yakuza Kiwami. In the second half of the month, having finally picked up a PS3 for the first time I enjoyed Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. After that, I finished up with Persona 5, a phenomenal game that will go down as one of my all time favourite games. Finally, I played my first 2018 release with Celeste, a game that is an early contender for ending at least in my top 10 games of the year come December.

Big update, since I haven't been posting my progress lately.

13. The Sexy Brutale - Jan. 21 (6h)
header.jpg

Fun little game, with a great time mechanic. Not too challenging to figure things out. It feels a bit like trying to figure out the best way to assassinate someone in Hitman, though with only one solution, and you're trying to save them instead of murdering them. My one minor complaint is that I wish each murder wasn't off in it's own section of the mansion, and it required you to build on your knowledge of events from previous sections, but maybe that would make everything too cluttered. Definitely worth playing through.

14. Guacamelee - Jan. 22 (5h)
header.jpg

Fairly short, but fun Metroid-like. Combat is pretty simple, but still fun. Most of the power-ups are a little on the boring side, unfortunately. Exploration is okay, but I never had a large desire to hunt down extra power-ups. On normal difficulty, it seemed a bit on the easy side, with very few deaths. I'm guessing harder difficulties would make me want to find extra upgrades to help. Thankfully, the game doesn't overstay it's welcome, and is entertaining throughout.

15. Painkiller - Jan. 25 (8h)
header.jpg

I did not care for this at all. I hated the feel of pretty much every weapon, level design was often silly, requiring a compass to know where to go to unlock the next area, and the enemies were all pretty boring. The soul-gathering mechanic was an okay idea, but in practice, I did a lot of waiting for souls to spawn after killing an enemy, slowing me down for no good reason. The story was, of course, awful, but that's to be expected for this style of game. I don't see myself playing any of the other Painkiller games in my library.

16. Crimsonland - Jan. 25 (3h)
header.jpg

Pretty fun twin-stick shooter. The various weapons and upgrades kept things interesting, and there was enough enemy variety to keep things fun for the relatively short playtime. I still prefer some of the abstract twin-stick shooters like Geometry Wars or Waves, but this was a fun diversion.

17. Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris - Jan. 29 (5.4h)
header.jpg

Not as bad as the reviews might make you believe. I played through this in single-player, and I had a good time. The puzzles were all pretty straightforward, and none of the fights were really all that difficult. The platforming could be a little awkward from the weird perspective, and there were a few falls due to not being able to tell if I was above a platform or not.

18. Strider - Feb. 1 (4.3h)
header.jpg

Solid Metroid-like. Not one of the best in the genre, but it was worth my time. A couple of boss fights were a little challenging, but for the most part, death was pretty rare. Power-ups were a little on the boring side (mostly different energy types for your attacks, that could also be used for opening doors), and a few methods of traveling between areas.

Abandoned
These are games that I've played for a bit, and decided they weren't worth my time, and I've removed them from my backlog. I won't track them as part of my completed games, but thought it was worth tracking other progress on getting through my backlog.

1. Electronic Super Joy - Groove City
header.jpg

It's a short game, and I was at what I believe was the final boss, but I really wasn't having any fun.

2. inMomentum
header.jpg

Pretty boring first-person platformer. The controls felt off, and the time-trial nature just wasn't very much fun.

3. Serious Sam 2
header.jpg

I probably would have completed this one, but my save file got corrupted when I was about 1.5 hours into game. By far, the worst of the Serious Sam games. It tries to ramp up the humor, but mostly misses, and the combat just isn't as fun as The First Encounter, The Second Encounter, or 3.

January update

After replaying Metro 2033 at the end of last year it was time to finally give its sequel a shot. The graphics and atmosphere were something quite special in Metro 2033 and that doesn't change in Last Light, it might even be better. Gameplay and narrative are similar as well which I won't criticize since I've enjoyed it in Metro 2033: linear and not that many options to explore the world and a nice mix of stealth and action elements.

Not sure how I feel about this one. The game didn't really convince me, but I still had a hard time stop playing. I've probably expected a bit more from the developer behind Alan Wake. The story is alright but that's about it. I liked the idea that they've tried to combine a game with a TV show but that didn't work out for me. I just didn't feel like watching 20min episodes between the acts (they're skippable though). The graphics had their ups and downs. The gameplay had some interesting ideas (the time manipulation things) but it became kinda repetitive after some time.

What a great game. Arkane excels in level designing and that's the thing I've enjoyed the most about this game. Check out this thread if you want to read more about it. Apart from that the gameplay just feels good and it doesn't matter if you decide to go full stealth without detection or kill everyone and everything you encounter. It just works and it's fun. Topped off with a beautiful art style Dishonored 2 just shows how good games can be. Such a pity that it (and Prey) didn't sell that well.

I thought of myself as a BttF fan, but the game somehow didn't do anything for me. It started off strong, but the episodes' quality declined over time. Other than that it's a proper Adventure game with puzzles and without QTEs unlike the more recent Telltale games. I still kinda enjoyed it but I was probably expecting too much.

I didn't complete anything this month. Unless I can count the main storyline of Assassin's Creed Origin, but I am still working on side/collection type stuff.

I need to play more non-open world games starting this month.

Hoooo boy this has been a long time coming I started this back on PS2 I bought the version that came with the Dodge ball and have owned this on every platform I think I own anyway it's on my X I have finally completed it all except the perfectionist achievement and the bottle shooting one what a joy to finally finish it after stopping so many times on chapter 3 the story is silly and that ending meh it's pretty ridiculous and that sdk is never tedious (love the bike theme) the combat reminds me of how The warriors played around the same time
20 hrs spent and yes Gary your garbage the humor is traditional Rockstar and I'm just glad that after 15 plus years it's completed
rated Wait for a Sale it a good game but yes it hasn't aged great and I don't think it's possible that most people will want to complete all the classes to further the story so yes give it a shot if you like PS 2 era open worlds

5. Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 - 02/02/2018

012.jpg

I liked it a lot more than the previous game. It's actually challenging this time and the level design is way better.

Unfortunately it still has problems, and that's primarily with the new character, Copen. His gameplay is, on the surface, incredible. It's lightning fast, has tons of viable options, and is just plain fun. Unfortunately it's also completely bereft of challenge. The Gunvolt games have a mechanic where you avoid damage as long as you have a special meter filled, and with Gunvolt this is adequately balanced so you're not overpowered (you take damage while attacking and if you use too much you short out and have to wait for it to recharge, leaving you vulnerable), but Copen has nothing like that, and chews through bosses with no regard. You can turn the mechanic off, but then you're stuck getting pounded into the dirt by the bosses' unblockable, screen filling supermoves. It's disappointing because Copen is a lot of fun to play as, and I hope a third Gunvolt game fixes it.

Lovely action adventure game with neat boss fights, colorful and wonderful visuals and great soundtrack. While I do have some issues with some of the game's mechanics and some sections I overall quite enjoyed it and strongly recommend it to fans of 2D action games like Megaman or Gunstar Heroes.

17. Gobliiins
25004_front.jpg

A short Point n' Click Adventure game, though I find it more accurate to refer to it as a Trial and Error game :V
You play as 3 little gnomes who set out on a quest to save the king from a voodoo curse. The game is divided into screens or stages wherein you must achieve....something in order to complete it and progress.

Each of the 3 gnomes serve a purpose: One can pick up & put down items as well as use them, the other just hits things and the 3rd just casts a magic spell on things.
You must use each gnomes' abilities in order to clear a stage.

The reason I find this game to be 'Trial and Error' is because right from the start the game doesn't exactly tell you what to do in the first screen you are in and as such you will be using each character on just about everything on screen until you figure out the right action that'll let you progress.

I wasn't all too impressed with the game, gameplay wise, but it has good music and visuals.

OP

Got my thoughts on my January games here.

1: Legend of the Dark Witch (3DS, Vita, PC) - 4 Hrs 4 Mins (1/9/2018) 4/5
# A fun sidescroller action game. Definitely interested in the other entries.
2: OPUS: The Day We Found Earth (NSW, PC, Mobile) - 1 Hr (1/9/2018) 2.5/5
# A short interesting adventure game that had some really repetitive gameplay but a good story.
3: Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back (PS1, PS3, PS4) - About 8 Hrs (1/20/2018) 4/5
# A great platformer and pretty than the first one by a decent amount.
4: South Park: The Fractured But Whole (PS4, XB1, PC) - 19 Hrs 30 Mins (1/29/2018) 3.5/5
# A solid sequel to the previous SP game with more interesting combat, but a lesser script that really disappointed me compared to the previous entry.

January update - 6/52 games completed

LPFloYE.jpg

1. Pokemon Silver (GBC) - 53:01
First replay since getting the original along my first ever Game Boy in 2001. A long time has passed since then and the game definitely shows its age, especially after all the improvement future generations of Pokemon introduced to the series. Biggest complaints would definitely have to be with the storage system and the constant need to switch boxes. I also decided to put Weepinbell and Vulpix on my team before realizing those evolution stones are not available until after the Elite Four - some kind of heads up would've been nice. The grind wasn't as fun as it used to be, and returning to Kanto felt somewhat empty, but there's still lots of fun to be had exploring the world and catching different types of Pokemon. Recommended for anyone looking for a nostalgia trip; otherwise go for the remake.

5p2GC2I.jpg

2. Gorogoa (Switch) - 1:35
I wasn't really sure what to expect from this game but positive word of mouth made me give it a try. It turned out to be a really short but very artistic and refreshing take on the sliding puzzle genre. You're presented with a grid of four windows, where the given illustrations can be dragged, split into additional layers or overplayed on top of each other. The goal is to figure out the composition of a specific scene, wherein two or more of the boxes create some sort of action, such as an apple falling from a branch to a bowl located in the panel below. There's only one solution to each situation, but it's easy to spend a couple of minutes trying to figure out the correct sequence. You also won't find much replay value here but its art style and clever storytelling should be incentive enough to give it a chance.

3. Cuphead (PC) - 8:06
Fuck this game - that's all I wanted to write while playing through Cuphead. While it is known for being difficult, I did not expect it to be this cheap about it. Or at least that's what I thought every time I started a new level. It seems like there was always one enemy or attack type that kept me from finishing the battle. The random nature of some encounters did not help, either. But the more I played, the better I became at recognizing patterns and knowing what to watch out for. There is a really nicesense of progress as you repeat levels over and over again. And the amazing art style and animation make sure none of the fights ever get boring. In the end, you will hate it and love it at the same time throughout the entire experience.

4. Super Bomberman R (Switch) - 5:00+
On my mission to actually clear my ever growing Switch backlog, first pick went to Bomberman. I was never a huge fan of the series, only briefly playing it in some multiplayer battles in the NES days, but the return as a Switch exclusive and a pretty positive reception convinced me to give it a try. Let me first say that you should obviously not get this to play single player. The story mode is actually pretty well made, in the style of something like a modern Cartoon Network show, but the levels themselves are pretty bland and often get too overwhelming to finish. You start of with a set number of lives and use them to complete nine levels in every world. Lose all the lives and you have to use your coins to buy a continue. Problem is, with each hit being a KO, I stopped caring about dying. Continues eventually become free, and you are dropped right in the same spot you got taken out, so in theory there is an infinite amount of chances to play. Unfortunately, all of that is just not very fun. Konami did do a great job of supporting the game over time, with additional modes, new levels and even surprising characters, so if you're looking for a party game, this is a solid choice.

5. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: The Master Trials (Switch) - 13:30
First ever DLC for a mainline Zelda turned out pretty well. I wasn't a fan of hiding the Master Mode behind a paid expansion, but this pack added a bunch of new armor and some useful tools to expand the adventure. I enjoyed going on a treasure hunt, trying to find the hidden chests based on location clues, even though some of them were annoyingly hidden behind or under other objects in the world. Hero's Path added a very useful visualization to your trek through the world, proving just how many places I have never visited. The biggest addition are the trials, however, where you are dropped into multiple rooms with nothing but your runes. Just like on a particular island in the main game, you have to scour for weapons and armor by defeating all enemies in sight. Completing the trials gives your Master Sword a boost, but I found that somewhat of a weak incentive and did not bother completing the final stages, especially since failure results in having to repeat all the previous rooms. All in all, this got be back into the game and now I'm excited to start on the actual story DLC.

6. Oxenfree (Switch) - 4:28
This was described to me more as a interactive story than an adventure game and I guess it falls right in the middle. You follow a group of friends on a leisure escape to a strange island, where you'll encounter some supernatural forces while trying to deal with teenager moods and some serious personal issues. The gameplay portion revolves around moving the character between different sections of the island, all while communicating with the various members of the group and choosing between a couple of dialogue options. These conversations are really the main course of the game, as they are nicely fleshed out and focus on developing relationships between the characters. Some might say this is a walking-talking simulator, since there aren't any real puzzles here, but the interactions are deep and interesting enough that you'll want to keep following on. The game does have a number of issues, the biggest being long loading time and frequent frame drops. Controlling the characters can also be cumbersome, the story doesn't really pick up until the second half of the game, and the voice acting is not the best, but there is enough intrigue here to have kept me playing and finishing it in one day.

22. Syberia / 10h40 - completed 02.02.18

I love this game so much. The places, the characters, the story. Had played it back in the day, on the PS2 of all things and had fond memories, but this new playthrough made me like Syberia even more. The way Kate's personal life and her new experiences are interwoven into the plot as she grows and finds her true self is marvelous. Not many games manage to tell a story about personal change as well as Syberia does. And the setting. It's a whimsical reimagining of the real world, with a dash of magical realism, always teetering on the brink between reality and fantasy. A world prisoner of its past. The art style is absolutely perfect for the mood set by the game as is the sound design. And the towering architecture contributes to the sense of a world that is larger than life. The dialogue is plentiful, witty and touching at times, and the voice acting is mostly good.

Can't recommend this game enough to someone interested in Adventure games.

4) Luxor HD (Steam, 16 hours and 30 minutes)
It's a Zuma clone, but it feels too long and it also gets too hard for my liking. It becomes less of setting up cool combos and more of just trying to survive which I don't think is a lot of fun. Also the version on Steam has problems.

Game 07: Chibi-Robo! - 4/5 - 24:20 hours (28/01/2018)

Got to the end of the story, found all stickers. In the beginning you feel quite lost and you end up wandering somewhat aimlessly, due to the rather cumbersome controls, unexplained mechanics and obtuse game structure: you keep working towards trivial tasks, such as cleaning stains and throwing garbage, in a vastly inaccessible world, which is far too bigger than you, without an obvious objective in reach or in the distance. This soon changes as you get comfortable with the reward-based progression system, the day/night cycle and the way exploration works. The gameplay loop shows its face and works just fine: you clean to get rewards, which are in turn used to increase the distance you can traverse to explore, so that you can clean even more and so on. Exploring has you meet the vast cast of crazy characters, who are the main dish of the adventure; in fact the house that's the setting of the game is gaming's version of Toy Story's house: all the toys are alive and personality-wise would feel at home in a psychiatric ward. You're quickly deep into their stories, trying to help them solve their personal problems, while also keeping up the exploration and the householding. What's interesting is that you're never quite certain if what you achieve serves to progress the main plot forward or if you're just playing into one of the countless sidequests: the various parts of the game are interwoven seamlessly. The game opens up with the introduction of more and more weird characters, the structure of the game feels truly organic and new things happen all the time, without you ever noticing what triggered them: you can get a cutscene simply by entering a room at a certain moment, you may find a character in an unexpected place or stumble upon new tasks simply due to the game's inner cycle of "events" having place periodically. The most surprising fact is that you never end up roaming around in search for new things to do until the very end of the game, when going for 100%, and there's only one instance of a cryptic progression element you have to trigger three quarters of the game in, needed to put the last piece of the main plot in motion. The longer you spend with the quirky cast, the less time you'll spend actually cleaning: the rewards for helping the characters, progressing the story and exploring are much heftier, and you'll honestly be curious about how each toy's problems will reach a final resolution. Exploration is done by degrees, you always get a bit more but not everything at once, due to the time and battery limit, making you come back to go further and further. It's fun to search for new paths in this colossal, yet cozy, setting, to wonder how to get to something high up, only to be caught by surprise by unlocking the actual way to do it through an item or a character changing something. The plot itself is simplistic but doesn't really need to be anything other than that, there's fun to be had in following the daily lives of the toys and family members, there's no need for some bigger, complicated storylines; the conclusion feels nice and adequate to the adventure, giving you a sense of closure but leaving you the option to do more if you want to. Speaking of which, there's a massive amount of tasks to perform, missions to accomplish and collectibles to find: the game gets significantly lengthier if you try to do everything, but loses some steam by the endpoint. The sound department features mostly happy go lucky music and upbeat sound effects; one fantastic idea put into the game is that each material you walk on and each action you perform with an item results in a distinct but abnormally musical sound, as if you're composing the soundtrack itself with your actions. Graphically the game holds up to this day, mostly thanks to the low-polygon, clean looking approach: everything is blocky but super solid in appearance, with vibrant colours and simple yet distinctive animations. I was blown away by how different the game is from everything, and how full of content it is, still managing to make the process of playing through that content always fun and interesting in new charming ways.

Game 08: Q.U.B.E: Director's Cut - 3/5 - 04:06 hours (31/01/2018)
header.jpg

Concluded the campaign, found all secrets, tried and got a few golds on time trials. A short first person puzzle adventure that borrows heavily from Portal for the setting and structure, with inventive physics based cube puzzles that feel a little more rigid than usual. The puzzles themselves strike a perfect balance between boring and complex, I've never felt frustrated, but still felt I achieved something when I completed them; new mechanics are costantly introduced and seamlessly linked with previous ones. The environments are all too familiar and don't change much till the very end, and even then they're still far too samey; that's in part probably due to the low budget, but in part surely due to the need of keeping the atmosphere oppressive and alien throughout the whole game. The plot starts as the same old trite "you're imprisoned/stranded, you have no memory and someone's lying to you", but the ending subverts all expectations in a clever, unexpected way; the voice over is nicely done and, especially in the ending, it really brings the point across. A cool take on the genre that doesn't try anything too innovative.

Game 09: The Silent Age - 3/5 - 05:24 hours (02/02/2018)
header.jpg

Stopped the never-ending cycle. The various chapters the game's divided in don't all feature the same quality and difficulty, you can single out the ones without any time traveling as being particularly weak: the puzzles in the game are all rather obvious, bar a few, but that's mostly masked by the time jump element, which makes them appear more complex than they actually are. The voice acting is par for the course and doesn't add much to the experience; the same applies to the insignificant characters, but not to the plot, which is at least interesting and offers a few hooks that keep you playing to see what's next. The problem lies in how the whole storyline resolves and in how everything lacks internal coherence: time traveling and time paradoxes are treated with clear superficiality, and the developers never seem to get their minds straight about casuality and possibility to change a timeline or not. The presentation is clean and somewhat minimalistic, the soundtrack haunting, the settings scarcely populated and giving off a sense of dread, especially in the future time period. A game which joins traditional point and click adventure gameplay with an interesting time traveling twist, without reaching new heights.

4. Toybox Turbos (4 hours)
This could have been a fun game, but the item set in here is pretty bad. The race is either close and any easy position can render your item useless or too far to target your opponents. No defensive options to speak of, either. It's shame, since this game is rather adorable.

5. Tacoma (2 hours)
Gone Home was an interesting story told in an interesting way, and so is the dev's follow-up game, Tacoma. It is something of a sophomore slump, though, with its game environment not flowing as well as Gone Home's did.
