UPDATE 2/2:
Update with some new info new video of the story from today.

Jess went to a "sugar daddy" website where he met the girl. Payed her $300 a hour to have sex with her. On one of their encounters he recorded video of her without her consent. She was 16 at the time. Jess's lawyer says he didn't know she was underage when it happened.

Jess Cliffe, the co-creator of Counter-Strike and a game computer designer for Valve Corporation, was booked early Thursday for sexual exploitation of a child.

Not a lot of details right now, but expect more in the coming days.

Police did not immediately release details, and Cliffe was not charged with a crime. Police did not say if an actual child was harmed. Cliffe does not have a criminal history.

Wait, what? How can you be booked but not charged?

Edit: Seems an arrest can happen without being charged. The prosecutor later decides is you get charged. They just had some kind of evidence to bring him in.

Just looked him up and he's the voice of Counter-Strike. Does that means the "Fire in the hole" was voiced by him? Damn that phrase would never be the same again.

Those back to back posts though.

Interesting the news pointed out his relationship to Counter-Strike. Typically that kind of thing isn't mainstream enough for local news like this because "video games."
I work at Kiro in Seattle, Valve is a local company and we have covered DOTA championships in the past (in a broad stance)

Member banned (2 days): Inappopriate joke. Suggesting multiple Valve staff members are child molesters.
So that's what valve employees have been doing instead of making games. Sickening.

Interesting they have shots of Valve's new office they were using as b-roll footage. Guessing those were filmed unrelated to this news.

What kind of bullshit it this? A person was booked, not charged, and how dare you make these kinds of derogatory comment towards the entire workforce of a company. Even if this person is guilty, and I hope they're not and this is a misunderstanding, this does not implicate his colleagues.

If they are guilty, I hope they pay the price and hope their victim will get the support they need.

Let's not jump to conclusions, he was booked, not charged. Let's wait for proof first.

edit: spelling error

I only know this because I watch a fuckload of Dateline. I'd think they wouldn't do this (bring him in) unless they had some really strong evidence.

People that prey on children are the lowest of the low, I guess we'll see what comes of this.

Just speculating here, could it be that he was caught in the act, and therefore they haven't had time to formalize a charge yet?

The fact that he was brought in at 1:00AM that's a possibility for sure.

Its also possible it was some kind of misunderstanding there's no way to know until there's more info. Mistaken identity or something. These things can happen.

It should probably read 'as of yet not charged with a crime'. You can be held for three days (I believe) before they have to formally charge you or let you go.

There's an extreme lack of information in this story, including literally whether he's even being charged with a crime and what the accusation would be. Seems like an actual time to wait for more information, though it seems it's likely going to be bad.

After seeing The Hunt these things can fucking ruin a person's life, even with false accusations. I really hope this is a misunderstanding.

Correct; only an attorney (in this case, a prosecutor) can file charges in court. You may be booked if the cops got you dead to rights on potentially being charged, and the prosecutors are likely to file charges.

Keep in mind prosecutors need probable cause that a crime was committed.
