But shield doesn't have a unifying front end where I can access all stuff easily. I was thinkin of just getting a microsd card from eBay full of RetroPie stuff already set up? Is it worth it?

The RetroPie image could be old, its best to get the latest version, the amazon Raspberry Pi kit you linked before is fine for what you want to do.

It's very easy to set up. Everyone talks about Retropie, but I'd reccomend Recalbox. It runs Emulation Station as its frontend just like Retropie, but is much easier to use for people who just want to play games without messing around.
Buy your own Class 10 card, download Recalbox or Retropie as an image file, then your just write the image to the card and put it in the Pi. It's easy.

What's a class 10 card? How do I know? When you say write image to card you burn it like a cd?

mogster7777 I think everyone here has been very helpful, but if you want a plug and play solution, Raspberry Pi may not be for you. It's not difficult but does require a fair amount of patience, fiddling around and plenty of reading. Google will also be your friend with most of the questions you have been asking and you should be able to find answers quite fast :) Youtube also has some good tutorials on setting one up step-by-step if you're up for it.

Has anyone used a Raspberry Pi 3 B running RetroPie connected to a Xin-Mo 2 Player Arcade Controller (for a custom arcade cabinet)? If so is this easy to setup?

Slightly odd issue - I have a Pi3 (not overclocked) running RetroPie connected via HDMI to a sound bar which is in turn connected to a 1080p TV. My issue is that the sound in games seems to only 'turn on' when you initially load a rom after a second or two. The easiest example to explain is the 'Sega' chime in one of the Genesis Sonic games is slightly cut off.

I have tried messing around with the sound settings and using different cables to no avail. Seems like it might be an HDMI thing but has anyone come across this issue before?

Subscribed for future use! Always been interested in putting one of these together, but it always seemed a bit daunting to me. Your thread makes it sound so easy, seems like something I could definitely handle.

Was just wondering how the Pi3 works for general computing (aka as a desktop). And if emulators work in OS's available for the Pi like Ubuntu Mate (Obviously they work well in retropi but that's not something someone can browse the web and doing basic productivity like word processing on)

Reason being I was thinking of giving/recommending a Pi 3 to someone I know who is stuck on an ancient Core 2 Duo Windows Vista Desktop (they can't really afford a new desktop) on the possibility it could probably outperform the thing and give them a slightly better computing experience.

Have you looked at the pi3 specs.?They are not that great for general use. you only have 1gb of ram

I have I've been watching a video where someone used a Pi 2 for a week as his only computing device. Based on the videos I honestly think it runs better than the Vista PC in question as it's 10 years old although I wanted to see if anyone here has an extended experience using one as a desktop for good measure.

I used it a bit when I first for it, and it was not great. It suffered from lagginess in most task and video playback in a general computer environment was slow.

Isn't there another slightly more expensive pc on a a board that runs a decent windows, for like 60 bucks?

#1 A Core 2 Duo will smoke a Pi 3 in raw power. A Pi 3 is basically an outdated smartphone chip. A Pi 3 offhand has about oomph as the original Core Duo, maybe.

#2 Teaching people to use Linux is gonna be awfully hard. I know I heard people saying that they converted friends/family to Linux to save on tech support hours, but I'm very skeptical of the success rate of such an endeavor.

If you need a budget PC for someone to replace a laptop you can find older core i3 small form factor systems for like $100 with Windows license included. Something like this (deal from last year, OOS now): https://slickdeals.net/f/10571472-l...d-109-99-fs?src=SiteSearchV2_SearchBarV2Algo1

I run a little box like this for my Plex server. I bought an M71e with a Pentium G630 in it for $99 in 2015.

Honestly if they already have a Core 2 Duo laptop, a cheap SSD upgrade and a RAM bump, along with a Win7 upgrade, would probably speed the thing up immensely. Core 2 chips normally still run Windows pretty well if you're not trying to do gaming or 4k or anything fancy.

How do I install wonderswan and wonderswan color emulators on the Pi3. Browsing the folders, there are no emulators install for them?

both and b are the same, only idfference is on HDMI port placement if I recall, it's really easy to take of f the touchscreen you just peel it off from the lcd (if you don't need touch that is.)

Does not the Raspberry get very hot when it is connected to the screen? What do you recommend to use to avoid heating? I was looking at the Pimoroni heatsink compatible with your case, but as I have seen on YouTube it is useless.

Pimoroni heat sinks are quite short so you will have no problems.

Tried recalbox for the first time after using retropie. I like how some options are easier to get to, and it seems to boot up quicker. Pairing my SN30 just worked.

For some reason on all the emulators I've tried it adds this smeary effect to snes games whenever something is flickering. B is also confirm instead of A, for some reason. Other than that might keep it.

I'm thinking of getting a retropi zero, I'm mostly interested in 16 bit games so I prefer the smaller size than getting a 3. If 3 did N64 correctly for the most part I'd be tempted. Is a zero decent for 16 bit and under or is there slowdown?

A zero would be fine for the job.

I've been thinking about buying a Pi for years now and have been trying to do as much research about what exactly I'm looking for. Def going with the Pi 3, also want a case that I can slot in a 3.5 inch LCD and also preferably some sort of battery. Something like this
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06W9LRGRS/?tag=era0f0-20
but with an LCD able to be put on the top. Really just want to use it for retropie, I'm not very good with Linux but I'm also am pretty decent with computers. Hope something like this is feasible for someone who has never touched a Pi before. Anyone have any suggestions as far as a case goes? I'd prefer something clear acrylic but if a different case filled all my checkpoints it being acrylic is the least of my worries.

You will be fine with A lcd on top, most gpio and HDMI screens will be okay. those battery kits only need access to the micro usb port on the raspberry pi and should not cause any interference.

Thanks for the advice, this is all so new to me so I'm a little unsure about everything trying to figure out. Really excited about this as its been a long time since I started a little project like this for myself.

So I have the Logitech K400 (old one) bluetooth keyboard, but it does not connect to the Pi3 without the Logitech reciever - is there a way around this?
I don't want to occupy that USB slot for it. Are there other BT keyboards that work out of the box without a reciever with the Pi3?

Has anyone had any luck getting a Madcatz SFIV TE stick working? It's recognized (shows me that it's connected and what the hardware IS) but stalls halfway through configuration, I can't get it to not assign buttons to a function - the bit where you hold any button to not assign a button to a function? Turbo is not active. Very odd.

Google is not being particularly helpful as everything I can find is related to before support was added.

Can you try using a keyboard interrupt instead of a joystick interrupting y having them both plugged in? The other option if it's a PS3 version of the stick is to replace the encoder with an eBay one, a zero delay encoder is super cheap and works out of the box for retropie

Bluetooth keyboards are iffy in retropie especially when pairing

Thanks, I'll try that later tonight. It's the 360 version.

Is there a way to change the basic color output for GBA games? It seems like they always look terrible which I assume is an artifact of compensating for the GBA's original lack of backlight.

This is exciting need just a bit more power for it to run smoothly though. Even a 1GHZ OC doesn't seem to do it consistently. Also I'm running into a weird issue where my 360 controller isn't recognized after starting a game unless I disconnect and reconnect it.

I might have to upgrade to a 3

Nice, I'm assuming your are not getting the fps you want from the LCD correct? It's a 3.5" screen correct?

It's a 3.5" HDMI LCD it's only powered through the GPIO pins. It's pretty bad overall but it's a 60fps HDMI display for $25 so I really can't complain.

Ah nice, totally ignored the HDMI lead lol as I thought you was using a GPIO screen instead on a RP1.

Good stuff, the Pi3 is a world of difference from the 1.

Switched to USB mount for my roms, this is far better.
But man, MAME is just a pain still. Even if the emulator and rom version match, it's not guaranteed to work on the Pi huh :-/

I have the same problem.

I haven't spent the time yet, but I think I need to go through and test all the games I care about and look for the roms by hand.

Is there a definitive guide to getting PS1 games working on the Pi3?

I can sometimes get them to work and other times not, I'm having a hell of a time getting SoTN to work

Man I think the GBA games look great, I've beaten Zero Mission and FFV so far and at no point thought they looked odd

Have been building retropie arcade cabinets for a couple years now but my wife is going to have a baby any day now so I am moving on to smaller projects (just finished a retrofit on a broken NES.) All my large projects are on hold and packed away in the loft!

I have plans for a new project but wanted recommendations for a 3.5" screen - want best res possible.
