At the same time the kind of dimwit that would actually engage in such a site and trust that all the girls are all over 18 without any kind of proof. If I had to put myself in the shoes of somebody who's in to that kind of thing, I'd ask for an ID, passport, maybe even a birth certificate... and just the general nature of such a website meant to please some kinda strange fetish would just spell suspicion across every meetup...it's the internet, trust nobody.

16 is the age of consent in Washington if I'm not mistaken, so would I be wrong in thinking that this has more to do with the recording?

That would jive with the sexual exploitation of a child charge. Although the story says she is now 16, and the incident happened in 2017, so it's possible that she wasn't 16 when it happened.

And even with the Age of Consent here being 16, she's still a minor, and he's a piece of shit who engaged in Prostitution with a Minor and clearly admitted doing so. "Paying for her time" my ass. You're just a terrible human being if you participate in the sex trade with an underage kid even if she can normally give consent to sex.

I mean, I'm inclined to agree but the law is the law. When you break it down to the potential of "Guy just used a sugar daddy website to get a barely legal teen" it sounds a whole lot less sinister. It's got to be the recording that he's fucked because of.

Weird reactions. Here in Sweden he wouldn't be arrested for having sex with a 16 year old (15 is the minimum age for having sex with any other age older then that). But he would be arrested for buying sex as that is illegal.

Again, age of consent is determined by the state in the US. It's most commonly 16, as the case is here. I think there near age exceptions but we're obviously not dealing with near age with a sugar daddy website.

For pornography I think the age has to be 18, though; that's as high as age of consent goes. That's probably the key here considering that it's stated as commercial sexual abuse of a minor.

Well it's definitely possible:

Cliffe's lawyer, Zachary Wagnild, said in a bail hearing Friday that his client did not know AC was underage. Per Ars Technica, whose reporter was at the hearing, Wagnild confirmed that the two had sex. "Even if the facts are true as claimed, this was a meeting on an adult website," Wagnild said. "He was not looking for underage women and had no idea this woman was underage."

AC also said to investigators that she did not know if Cliffe was aware of her age.

Adult website and even the victim claims she is unsure if he knew, so at the very least it's unlikely she ever told him directly. Illegal is illegal though, plus the recording.

It seems he had no idea she was "underage", those sugar daddy websites are 18+. Plus 16 is legal in a lot of places including my country so 16 isn't really shocking to me, hell my Mum had me at 16. If she lied about her age to get on the site you can't really blame him IMO, it's like when guys meet a girl at a nightclub with a strict 18/21+ policy but she used a fake ID to get in, now he's on the hook for statutory rape which just seems crazy to me.

There are girls who look 10 years older than their actual age (I had a childhood friend in that situation and who got hit on by creeps when she was a young teen), and there are girls who look 10 years younger than their age (I'm over 30 and people still ask me what I'm studying at university...). It is quite possible that this was either an older-looking underage girl, or the guy mistook her as an older girl who looks younger than her age, especially since he met her at an adult website.

The dumbest part of it all was that he made a video without her consent.

I think blaming the young girl here is really shitty. You have no idea if she's a willing participant in any of this. At that age I'd believe there is more an element of exploitation and predatory behaviour that got her into this mess. A 16 year old isn't to blame here.

Absolutely.
I manage a boxing gym. Women make more or less 40% of our audience (believe me, a lot more than it used to be) and especially since this autumn there's been a bizarre surge of teen girls, more than any other demographic, that probably decided just recently boxing is cool for them.
Well, to cut it short, I'm getting their age wrong all the times and so I'm constantly checking for age confirmation as they sign up.

Between 15 and 21 seems really hard to tell reliably and my guesses are often overturned.

So quickly glancing at the story, it doesn't seem too bad. Definitely not in the realm of "oh he's a problem coz we have kids in the park" territory.

However, prostitution should be a thing for 18+. And he shouldn't have filmed it. Those are the two issues that stick to out me. And in that case.

1. Was she registered as a prostitute? Was Jess lied to about age by an agency? If so, the agency should be under fire. As well as the 16 year old.
2. Jess shouldn't be filming without consent. Therefore, he shouldn't be charged/booked with some kind of pedapilia, but instead with some kind of law against filming without consent.

That's my quick 2 cents. Note I'm not familiar with local laws nor have I thoroughly read into the story.

You have to realise though that in cases of child prostitution and human trafficking the victims will tell the story they're forced to repeat. If her handler says "tell them you're 18" then that's what will likely happen. I can't imagine a world where a 16 year old walks into this willingly without adult involvement.

Not blaming her fully no. Hes far far worse for filming this shit. But we have to question why the hell shes even registered on that site and is he the only one she interacted with? Is there other people she got in contacted with ?

This is where the situation is bad. He deserve punnishment for filming etc

But something needs to be changed on the sites end to stop minors being able to get on there

This has multiple layers of fuckup:

I agree with prostitution, but it's illegal in US so, strike 1.
Not doing the due dilligence on the girls age, strike 2
Recording without consent, strike 3

Giant clusterfuck up there Jess. I'll believe he wasn't a pedophile (until proven) but he won't get away of the paid sex and illegal recording

I think it's fairly obvious he has things to answer for.
And he probably deserves too, to some degree, knowingly or not.

It's just that given the new information I would be REALLY wary of labeling him anything like "pedophile" or "child molester", as it seemed to be the tone by the start of the thread.

You can be okay with prostitution but its still illegal there. He also filmed a 16 year old girl having sex, which counts as child porn. And he did that without her knowing about it.

You keep saying that but is there any proof she had handlers? It's entirely possible she just wanted some easy money and wasn't forced into it at all, at the end of the day she's 16, not 6. Plenty of women (yes and men ) are happy to have sex for money, maybe she's one of them? If that's the case I feel bad for him, his life is over because of a lie she told. Yes he shouldn't have filmed it without consent but had she been 18 that's a slap on the wrist crime compared to what he's facing.
