Oh neat! Yeah that's a huge problem for me, when I don't know how something is going to feel (with needles especially) I tend to tense up and get nervous and just end up making things worse haha. One day though, maybe sometime next year.
Something like this?

Oh my god that is beyond beautiful/amazing what have you shown me! :O My thighs also have plenty of fat and there's no real bone to worry about for pain reasons so I'd imagine that would lessen the pain quite a bit. I need.... what have you done!

Oh I'm sorry. let me show you from a wider pic. Maybe that will convince you not to do it :P

Also you should not worry about the bone. The needles don't go very deep, they are not like injections which go through the skin, tattoo needles only stay in the top layer.

You know exactly what you're doing! Haha That seriously is a beautiful tattoo and while I couldn't afford something like that anytime soon that is something that I'd seriously consider getting, would just have to do some research on how much something like that would cost and what places near me would be able to do that as just about as well as the original tattoo artist did.

I think you may be surprised. Something like that would probably not be more than like $400-$500, which, if you save up, isn't that much. Also, you pay by session, so if you do an outline one time and then color the next, you can break it up into two payments.

The outline I got was $180, for two hours, and I expect to pay about the same next time (more for the color session since it will be several hours), but if you pay a bit at a time it's doable.

I have always wanted to get a large tattoo on my back of a pissed-off Kirin with the swirly fire-clouds and all of that stuff. The idea of collaborating with an artist to get to something I like is both appealing and daunting, so I've always put it off. It's like the initial shopping stage is kind of overwhelming for me.

What are you ladies' experiences with that? Do you usually have a solid idea of what you want before finding a tattoo artist, or is it more exploratory?

I got my first tattoo with my cousin because she was going to get one. I knew what I wanted ahead of time, so I just went to the parlor with her and let them decide which artist was going to ink me. For my second and third tattoos, there's a parlor about a block from my work that has a five-star rating on Yelp, so I just walk there and talk to the first artist available. Each time I've known beforehand what I wanted and brought reference material.

Both tattoos I knew ahead what I wanted. But I gave the tattoo artist a little creative freedom with the details.
I did not regret the decision, I like the outcome of both tattoos.

That's nice to know! I had assumed it would probably be around $500 minimum though I don't have any real knowledge on prices. Yeah, currently in the process of trying to pay off my huge CC debt but I can put aside a little on the side for that too.

Yeah I'll go do it that way if I choose to get it, after doing some googling I managed to find an image of the outline of the same exact tattoo so that's pretty helpful as a reference as well.

Are you sure you don't want this one instead? :P

Yeah it sounds like I need to do some drawing. It's like I know the elements I want but an artist would definitely need to put it all together. I think it would be cool to find someone with an illustration style I like and give them freedom with it. For instance, I'd love to seethis artist's interpretation if I could get him interested in it. I'm sure he's booked for the next decade, but I love looking at his stuff.

You won't know until you call!

Hi Gats!

I don't have tattoos. But I did see this one girl with the Jabberwock poem in script down her back, it was sweet. (And spelled correctly too)

I was really intimidated by that too. I spent a long time researching artists in my area until I found someone whose style I loved, then I e-mailed her. We corresponded over e-mail for a while and I told her what I wanted, and she was interested in doing it. I just sent her a very basic sketch, because I wanted to give her leeway to do it up in her own style. So even though the tattoo is what I told her I wanted, I was more flexible with the exact way it looks. I think the most important things are finding someone whose art you enjoy and whose attitude you like. I was nervous about contacting my artist in the first place, because I felt like what I wanted was smaller in scale to a lot of the other work she's done. But she was super nice and made me feel comfortable, so you never know until you reach out.

Shop around. Look at an artist's previous work and find someone that fits the style that you like and are looking for. For example, some artists specialize in portraits and black and white tattoos, so maybe don't go to them if you want something more abstract and in color. Mine specializes in watercolor, so that's what we're doing.

I told him what I wanted and he sketched it out, we threw around some ideas, but ultimately I left the final design choice up to him and his skill as an artist. If you're too picky, then it makes it difficult to get a piece done with the same level of skill and care. Tattoo artists are professionals, and there has to be some level of trust in the design they present to you.

Of course, that's not to say you can't be picky, as it is going on your body forever, but I dunno. I told him "I want a ship and ocean themes to symbolize my home state" and he went "ok" and we talked about including whales and shit. It really was that easy, lol.

Y'all are stronger than I am. I want nothing to do with tattoos. Painful needles in my arm? Hell no I do not want that.

It's not really painful, tbh. The bicep and upper shoulder hurt cause they're both hella sensitive, but it was manageable.

Then again, I have a really high tolerance for pain, so maybe my perception is skewed. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Mine was about two and a half hours, and by the end I was so used to the feeling I barely noticed it. It really didn't hurt all that much. It was more weird? I'm not sure what to compare it to really. The hardest part was that my skin was like "what are you doing to me???" for the first fifteen minutes. It almost felt like it was jumping whenever it was touched. But that calmed down too, and it genuinely wasn't bad after that. I think it helps that it only hurts when they actually press the needle down. It's not a lingering pain, like when you stub your toe and it throbs afterward. I wouldn't say I have high pain tolerance, but who knows. I try not to test it out lol.

I will say, though, it's super itchy now.

I would, oddly, be more concerned about the healing process with no one to help me apply salve to something on my back than pain during the actual tattoo. That's probably naive of me though since it would be like... over my spine and stuff.

So even though the tattoo is what I told her I wanted, I was more flexible with the exact way it looks. I think the most important things are finding someone whose art you enjoy and whose attitude you like.

Yeah I would like this approach as well. Not starting the discussion being really prescriptive, but letting an artist I like interpret a concept / some key things freely in their own style. Welp. I'll send him a message and see if he is interested in the idea to begin with.

The healing process is weird. It's very sore the first two days or so, then it starts to scab and itch and peel. It looks gross so I got lowkey worried like "omg I hope it looks nice again soon". The aftercare process isn't too hard. Wash it every few hours with unscented soap and hot water, pat dry. Then after like two days, use Aquaphor and unscented lotion to keep your skin hydrated and not peely.

I've been wanting to do a Bowie tribute tattoo for a long time. I find the watercolor tattoo style beautiful so I just want the Bowie blackstar name logo solid black with the watercolor colors splashing behind it. I just haven't decided on a spot for it and and size also I worry about price.

Those are amazing if I was more versed in getting tattoos a portrait tattoo would be a possibility.

Right now my idea fits me with it being my first and also using the star spelling for Bowie means only people that know that design know what it really is. My little secret salute.
