When looking at Matthew Brown's Twitter to see what else is said/shown of Cypher I saw this link for Games of 2018: British Games - http://www.kotaku.co.uk/2018/01/12/games-of-2018-british-games

Not everything listed is indie but I would say a lot of it appears to be. Plenty of stuff listed there that I hadn't seen before on other lists so might be of interest to some people here.

Thanks for sharing

This one is out tomorrow. I backed it on Kickstarter so I'm just anxiously awaiting for my PSN code. If anyone else is jumping in, I made an |OT| for it.

Here's my report from Playcrafting's Winter Play: NYC Game Expo yesterday. Overall, it was a fun event. There was a huge variety of indie games in various states of completeness. Many people were demoing some very early, work in progress stuff. Some of them were games developed during 48 hour game jams, others were still short, buggy messes =).

There were also several more established developers there, including the developers of Slime-san. They are acting as the publishers of Spirit Sphere DX a fantasy tennis(ish) game that wasn't really up my alley so I didn't play it.

I'm going to just list a few of my favorites that I either played or watched significant portions of.

NOISZ - $14.99 / on sale for $13.49 [Early Access] (PC/Mac)
ss_e2872c2d4ffd392877274dbd684ba0210ed61d05.1920x1080.jpg

NOISZ fuses music game and shoot-em-up elements to create a frantic new experience that demands lightning reflexes, keen sense of rhythm, and judicious decision making!

It's a boss only shmup. Each beat you tap one of two buttons to either shield or shoot. The shield protects you from the white/blue projectiles, but the black/red attacks are always damaging.

When I first saw it I was expecting something like Ikaruga, but the concept actually reminds me more of something like Dub Wars. Each boss's attacks are tailor made to sync up with music in cool ways. My one criticism was that the player's own shots use the same black and red color scheme as the enemy's attacks. Since your shot is a instant fire laser though, this isn't a big deal in practice.

Avaria VS - $15 Kickstarter/ $20 at release (PC/Mac)
e36a3ef8e5d53bd0e26b3d9ec8c895ed_original.gif

In AVARIA vs, choose a party of 3 heroes to battle against an opponent's party. During battle, opposing players choose their actions simultaneously and then witness the mayhem of their decisions.

A competitive 1v1 strategy game with a style that evokes a classic 3D Final Fantasy aesthetic. As the battle progresses, your characters naturally level up as they take actions. The big strategic decisions here are when and how much of the early game to spend powering yourself up vs. dealing damage to your opponent. There are also opportunities to prevail by predicting your opponent's actions, as you can use shields of various kinds (damage reducing or reflecting) on specific characters. So if you can predict who will be attacked you can counter accordingly. I was impressed by the graphics and polish for something still in the kickstarter process, and the abilities seem pretty fleshed out as well.

Just One Boss - Free. (Pico-8 / browser)

A grid-based action / avoidance game for the Pico-8.

The game starts off pretty simple. The real joy here is watching Ayla's gorgeous pixel art animations introduce each new wrinkle into the game play. Each new trick of the magician's is animated with style and personality. I didn't actually get to play this one at the expo, but I'm definitely going to try it out when it's released.
Edit - It's out now and is short and fun. Pretty tough, too, but there are checkpoints so you don't need to restart if you die. Click the link above to play in your browser, or find it at https://brid.gs/games/ . There's even a hard mode that unlocks once you beat the game. Hard mode is brutal, though, and I gave up.

I am hyped for Crossing Souls. I think it comes out next week on PS4.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXQ0chPzJ_k

I was pretty impressed with the demo. Definitely looking forward to the full version.

All Our Asias is now available on Steam.
It's a short, free narrative game about the Asian-American experience from the developer of Anodyne and Even the Ocean, and looks quite intriguing; I'll give it a play later.

All Our Asias is a free, surreal, lo-fi, 3D adventure, about Asian-America, identity, race, and nationality.

The protagonist is Yuito. 31, Japanese-American. Hedge fund analyst. One day he receives a letter from his estranged father, who is dying. It's too late for Yuito to speak to him. But, his father is on life support, so Yuito has an opportunity. He can under go a Memory World Visitation, and enter his father's Memory World - supernatural landscapes where Yuito can explore his father's experiences and secrets. It is risky, Yuito feels compelled to make the journey...

Thanks for this. There was plenty of stuff I hadn't seen either that has now been added to my list. Armoured Engines looks like a cool take on Tower Defense.

I'm really enjoying Celeste - the platforming is solid and inventive, and there's plenty of additional challenge to be had. If you're into SMB or N++ you'll be right at home here. The game does a pretty good job of separating the core story stuff from the strawberry challenges in terms of difference in difficulty.

Celeste is wonderful (and I already finished it D:).

I'd kill for N++ on Switch. Considering buying SMB again, 'cause it's still probably my favorite 2D platformer ever.

Great to see this game on here! I've been following its development for awhile now and I've only had time to play like a half hour of it so far, but it's really really neat. Also, the OST comes with a pretty sizable ebook talking about the game's design and development that seems super interesting, and it's something I'd definitely like to see more developers try to include.

Unfortunately, I played through it after this post and was pretty let down; it starts off promisingly, but takes a detour so your character can, of all things,
research tax policy (it's about as interesting to play as it sounds)
and never really recovers. I liked some of what it was trying to say about Asian-American identity, at least, so maybe others will be more favorably inclined towards it, I dunno.

I'm playing Tesla vs Lovecraft, and it hasn't captured me yet. Kinda boring going through the first part of the game. I've already encountered at least one level layout twice, and I've not played a whole hour yet.

So I've come to the conclusion that we're now past the point of one notable release per day, on average. For example, here are today's notable releases:

Yeah, its impossible to stay on top of everything, which is why I love this thread and people just trying other games that nobody else played.

I actually put a game in the unreleased section that I really look forward to trying because it looks so super weird and apparently has tons of depth, so I am just reposting it again:
Settlements - $18,99 (PC)
ss_a6a83f763fc6f4679ac2d66c4c63a03d34ce1011.1920x1080.jpg

Settlements is a game of Managing resources in the ruins of our world. Recruit characters and level their skills and equipment from the stone age until the space age, while trying your best to avoid the very thing that lead to our destruction previously.

Edit: Alright, mission accomplished - weirdest game of the month bought.

I just finished it up, I actually really enjoyed it. Pretty much all the areas were super interesting and I liked most of the writing quite a bit (and the music!). I didn't have any issues with that section you mentioned, I feel like the weird tone/subject matter shift was pretty well thought-out, although the pacing of the whole game was really unconventional. I do wish it went a bit deeper on some of those themes, although I'm sure there's some stuff I didn't see (there's at least a whole area in the open-ended part of the game that I think I didn't explore at all).
I will say some of the character's decisions were kind of baffling, like when he inexplicably assaults the club manager. I thought him being easily antagonized would come up in some way later on, but for the rest of the game he seems pretty levelheaded.
Anyway, I'd definitely recommend it to anyone else interested in narrative walking sims or light exploration games. Good stuff.

Beat Celeste today, but the last stretch nearly destroyed my hands - 1700 deaths, and that's with quite a few strawberries missing - there's a lot of additional things to unlock, but I might take a break before getting back to it.

Toma Tesla vs Minecraft is a modern/evolved version of Crimsonland. It's in polygons instead of sprites, and missions take place on maps with obstacles. Less weapons provides more focus. There are passive upgrades as well as the leveling/perk system. Lots of missions. It's a good SHMUP, not a great one.

Hmmmm, guess I will need to check it out then! Curious how the variety of the missions has been handled.

Think of it less as missions that demonstrate variety, and more as a nice array of survival missions.

The enemies are not as varied as those in Crimsonland, such as spiders that split into multiples.
Hm, unfortunate, thats the one are where I'd hope they would add even more variety.

Here's something that could be worth keeping an eye on:

Forest of Liars - ??? (PC, Mac, and consoles)
sylvain-sarrailh-forestofliars1080p.jpg

Forest of Liars is an adventure game that delivers a different experience every time you play. You will encounter strange and extraordinary characters who can assist you on your quest to reach the center of the resplendent and dazzling wood.

Nothing is really known yet, but it's the creation of artist Sylvain Sarrailh (aka Tohad) who creates some really lovely art.

A trailer will be coming soon.

Back in #267, I suggested that we are past the point of 1 notable release per day on average. Well I've been trying to catalog what I consider to be a notable release. Here are today's:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/690150/Fossil_Hunters/
http://store.steampowered.com/app/500260/Ben_and_Ed__Blood_Party/ (out of Early Access)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/667890/Dead_Maze/ (2D MMO)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/331690/Crossing_Souls/
http://store.steampowered.com/app/379430/Kingdom_Come_Deliverance/
http://store.steampowered.com/app/510490/The_Fall_Part_2_Unbound/
http://store.steampowered.com/app/504110/The_Longest_Five_Minutes/
https://francisvace.itch.io/pendulis-preview (DEMO)
https://nick-barber.itch.io/occult (Experimental)

Please let me know if this is unwelcome or otherwise, if this is so welcome that it should be properly formatted as per Toma's OP. As of right now, I'm just dumping lists into a text file for fun.

I like that and would advocate for 2 or so notable releases each day getting a full format post so they are included next month. You could just pick the most promising looking ones or something.

Man, how is Devolver capable of publishing so many games???

I hope they are not releasing too much games. Before every devolver games was an event because of its quality. Now we can see some average reviews like it seems to be for crossing souls and was recently for strafe and ruiner (I haven't played these games and I'm still curious about them).
It's still (one of) my favorite dev and I'm still very hyped for swords of dito and Minit anyway.

I will be acquiring Fe. Decided to go with PC because they don't have Switch codes ready.

I'll let yall know how it goes.

Someone else is doing Kingdom Come: Deliverance. They say that everything is spot-on except for combat. Another opinion has said that combat is ultra-precise, and less like a video game and more like a combat sim. If you want to do damage, for example, you have to aim for under the armor, like in the joints.

That sounds more complex than rewarding.

Oh, also, there's a game called Deep Sixed. There will be some time before I can discuss that one.

Is KCD considered indie? Doesn't really strike me as such, given it's budget and publisher.
Well, it was initially designed as a contrast to the typical AAA blockbuster game with completely different focusses. I'd love to hear your guys opinions on it, in any case.
