Always loved getting those manuals from MGS.

Speaking of manuals I always really had a fond spot for the Resident Evil 2 manual. Maybe cause it was my first legitimate Ps1 purchase and I couldn't wait to get home and play it. Read it so many times, always wanted the figures shown at the back.

Yeah, I think that's it! I used to read the manuals on the way home on the bus/metro after buying the game from the shop. It just built up the anticipation even more. I miss those days.

yeah, people these days dont wanna be readin no stupid manual.

To be fair, we're not talking about essencial mechanics and elements that makes the game literally unplayable if you don't use them, it's more about "you need to have that specific mindset, expectations and play in a certain way to get enjoyment out of it". RE6 is not a hard game to comprehend in basic levels, you can finish it and don't even use half ot it's core gameplay mechanics because basically you don't need to, if you just shoot and use melee attacks it won't punish you in any way. It's just less about people that didn't read a manual and more about of a less intuitive, megalomaniac ball of elements that just won't resonate with all players.

In most ways it's a title about presentation and low depth. It can be more meaningful and complex, but most of that complexity needs a unbalancing difficulty to finally have a purpose other than entertain. If you make a game that's basically a wrestling porn with point and shoot mechanics, i don't think that many people will try to do more than what is pleasing to watch on the screen.

A few years ago after the HD release of Revelations, I messaged the game's translator Mark Reichwein about a major story mistake that implicated the "Global Pharmaceutical Consortium", the organization that founded the BSAA that Chris and Jill work for, as the villains. In the original text the terms "international pharmaceutical company" (a reference to TRICELL that is confirmed in Jessica's Report) are the only ones used, with zero resemblance between the kanji so this was less of a mistranslation and more of the translator thinking on the fly. This wasn't corrected in the HD release he claimed to have reviewed (apparently by not checking the translation, merely grammar).

Lo and behold, in the latest releases it has been changed. You're welcome Mark!

Nice!

I was tempted to buy Revelations again when it released on PS4 but I don't think I could bring myself to play it again. Easily my least favorite title in the series.

RE5 becoming a co-op game was one of the best decisions Capcom made (If I'm not mistaken, I believe it was originally supposed to be a "Chris only" adventure.). It rekindled the nostalgia I had for scrolling Beat'em ups from the 90's where the co-op aspect was one of the highlights from that era.

One of my fondest gaming memories is when me and three other friends played the 4 player Arcade TMNT Turtles in Time.
With that said, please bring Outbreak back Capcom!
If you saw what was changed or cut to accommodate co-op you may change your mind. I think RE5 one of the best co-op games ever but what got left on cutting room floor is criminal.

If I could only play RE5 or RE6 which one should I go for?
RE5, without a doubt.

I thought it was one of the worst decisions they made. I followed that game from the beginning and it was looking so good when it was just Chris, his design was also much better before they changed it. I never wanted co-op in my Resi games, I wish they just made that an option rather than designing the game around two players and then forcing everyone to play with an AI partner.

Oh I see... I was completely out of the loop regarding RE5's development back then, so I'm not entirely sure how much Capcom cut from their initial idea.

I'm considering picking up Revelations 2 on Switch, but I wonder how it plays on the system. My brother owns it on Steam so I could probably just play it via Family Sharing.

Personally I think both Rev games are more highly lauded than they ought to be. Considering they're neither great horror or action games.
But that's none of my business though

I suppose a fan of Dino Crisis would know about games that aren't good horror or good action :V

May I ask what you didn't like about REV games seeing as I remember you saying you like the action REs like 5 onwards, and the REV games are more in the action category then horror. Not saying they were better then 5 or 6 but they were good action games for myself anyway.

I always thought Dino Crisis 2 was a really fun action game. I played through 1 and 2 last year for the first time since they came out and I really enjoyed them, especially 1. Still need to play 3, but I know it's meant to be pretty awful so I was never in much of a rush to play it.
Howdy.

I'm not gonna lie, the only reason I really like Rev2 is because Claire is in it. But on its own, I thought it was a fun game. I especially liked playing as Moira. lol
Yeah I despise Moira's writing so that was doing me no favors. When there's so many other incredible games to play, I tend not to dwell on those that turn me off so quickly.

I was dreading Moira going on the trailers, but she ended up being my favourite character in the game. I thought the game itself was decent, didn't like Rev1 very much so it was an improvement for me, and like I said before, Raid mode was a lot of fun, best thing about the game for me.

I miss Leon and Ada's love story. Can we get a proper follow-up please ? It has been 15 years after RE2 now, can't they just exchange words ? There's so much to explore, and it kills me how relationships are in the gutter after 2. They just decided the characters will become immortal superheroes instead of evolving humans

I bought all of rev 2 and have yet to finish it, it seemed fun but it kinda just didn't pull me in. I would also LOVEEEEE more Sheva, she really is underappreciated.

With the choice of re5 and re6, I'd do 5 all day long, the combat is much more rewarding. Mastering Merc on Public Assembly made me feel like a pro lol.

For me it's just I prefer the RE games to do one thing and do that one thing well.
Like the only RE title atm that has managed to somewhat balance things is RE4 really.

Besides that every other game is far better sticking to what they do rather than trying to be this awkward middle ground. That has always been my biggest issue with the Rev games over something like 5 and 6. 5 and 6 might not be good horror games. But as action games they're very fun. Rev 1 and 2 on the other hand are neither scary nor ever reach the same action of those mainline titles. So they just kinda limp as "ok" titles and nothing more. For fans that are/were eager to go back to any sort of horror attempt I can see the appeal. But considering I felt Leon's campaign in RE6 was the weaskest since his earlier missions tried to do just that. You can start to see how I am with these things I hope.

I will say that in the general scheme of things. The lore of RE comes first for me. Which in that case I was very glad with how Rev 2 incorporated some fan favorites back into the fray. While also adding a new great character to the lineup. But still currently since I have to consider the whole package. I rank Rev 2 > Rev 1 > CVX as the lowest titles when talking "mainline". CVX is only the lowest because I feel it hasn't aged well at all compared to the PS1 games. While i'm not a big fan of RE7 I do rank it higher than those titles just because for the most part it basically sticks to it's attempt at being horror. Even when things get more actiony near the end. Which I can give it some props for over trying to appeal to everyone in the main game.

To me go all action or go all horror so you can make the best game possible. The middle ground just isn't a good fit for RE unless you got a legendary team and/or luck out (RE4)

The shooting is so bad in Rev1 and 2. No enemy reaction at all and the weapons have no weight. It's kinda like RE6 but that game had a lot of things around it that made it fun to play (and the weapons still feel better than Rev but not as good as RE4 and 5). The Revelations games have nothing to make up to the lack of kick, impact and power.
