What a great idea for a thread.
I'm not going to lie the media here in the states has put your country as a no go for me(I'm not a Trumper). Tell me it's not so scary for visitors.
I truly know so little about Mexico.

Here's the deal, México is a pretty huge place, and it does have its dangerous areas.

However it also has incredibly beautiful and super calm areas. Why do you think so many American retirees move over here?

Imagine if I told you that America scares me shitless because all the news I hear. If I imagine America to be one gigantic Florida I would never step foot in there.

However you, as an American, would tell me "Don't be silly, America has a ton of great places, not everyone here is Florida Man".

Same with Mexico. Not every place is Michoacan.

Come to visit one day. I promise you will love it.

Video games preferences

Video game preference? My wife is Mexican and I've met hundreds of different people from Mexico during our relationship and there is nothing unique about their video game preferences. Unless you include soccer video games but that's nearly country outside of the US.

It's just an odd thing to bring up is all.

Do Mexicans really think they are a world power in soccer or that they are the number 1 team in CONCACAF? The former is laughable the latter is fair.

Nobody thinks that Mexico is a world powerhouse in football. Like no one. Best on Concacaf? Maybe.

Also we don't celebrate Cinco de c̶u̶a̶t̶r̶o̶ Mayo

But we do. It's a national holiday. It's not, however, our Independence Day as some people think, nor a day to get completely wasted.

I really love my country. I really do. But the cartels are out of control. It would me an almost perfect country without the violence that we are suffering.

And the problem will take decades to get fixed. Drugs need to be legalized. But then the cartels would start doing some other business... kidnapping, extortions... it will be hard, but believe me, there are more good people here in the country than bad people.

Fine as long as you do not behave like you are too good for Mexico when you visit. I live in Tijuana, and we get plenty of Mexican-Americans tourists and some of them act like Mexico is trash, start breaking all the rules they respect in the USA like throwing garbage everywhere or not respecting all driving signs.

Only good thing about Trump, he has put the fear of God on our less-well-behaved-Mexican-American-no-papers-let-me-brag-about-all-the-shit-I-buy-with-my-credit-card-and-a-big-useless-truck cousins

Also we don't celebrate Cinco de c̶u̶a̶t̶r̶o̶ Mayo
We do. It's just not an endless party

pretty much this, I've even told my American boyfriend that he should come live over here because Florida(where he lives) sounds 300 times more dangerous than Monterrey, haha.

Does the way that Trump and the GOP talk about you and your country affect your overall view of America or everyday Americans?

Live in Mexico too, Guadalajara specifically.

Short answer, yeah.

I work for an american company, from time to time we can travel to the US for work, training, etc. a couple months ago they asked me if I wanted to go to a training to LA and I say no. I know LA is one (if not) the most diverse city in the US but I don't want go regardless.

I know is my fault too, because I'm watching news, reading stuff, watching videos, etc about this whole mess all time (I like to understand both point of view, far left and far right). In general I feel (yeah from here) an hostile environment. I'm going to Thailand in a couple of months and I have one stop in LA and I hate it lol...

BUT! I know not everybody is racist, I like to go to the beach at least one time per month. I meeting people from the US all time, we always end talking about Trump, racism, etc. and they always say that they feel shame because of that, and not everybody is like that.

No way. We get excited when they seem to be able to reach history, but who wouldn't?

What is your view on Spain, both now and historical?
My views on Spain and spaniards as a whole are of a great country in a difficult demographic and economic situation. Spain has great traditions, great food and had great influence over Mexico. Conquista was fucked up, but most Mexicans aren't natives anymore, we are mestizos and a result of that conquer so it's difficult to hate too much.

But being there and knowing and treating with spaniards, I don't think Mexicans have many things in common with Spain. Spain is a European country and Mexico is an American country. We have more in common with south Americans than Spain.

Due to class-ism, people in Mexico like to brag about being descendant from Spaniards, even sometimes idiotically talking like Spaniards.

Well, I was talking about how Xbox is extremely popular here. More than PS4. And the Switch is a huge success despite the price. I don't know a lot of Mexicans who are into indie games. The majority of people I know here who likes videogames are only into EA/Ubisoft/Activison and other mainstream games (Call of Duty, FIFA, Halo, GTA, Madden, Assassins Creed).

Mexico, mostly, admires Spain I would say. People with ties to Spain brag about them, it's seen as a positive thing to have a very Spanish sounding last name. At the same time, we are saddened that our native people and culture we brutalized like they were - but we don't really blame modern day Spaniards.

Well, that then. I really wonder what's going to happen and how much it will matter than I feel like AMLO will use the Trump hate in his favor.

If AMLO wins he will not do much to be honest. The Congress (PAN and PRI) are going to be against him, so he wont be able to past plenty of his politics. He is not going to be able to fight corruption with his innocent proposals or make Pemex great again q:

Also, his alliance with PES make me dislike him more.

His alliance with PES made sure I will not vote for him in any way or form.

So yeah, fuck them.

Yeah.

Fuck AMLOve alliance with PES. PES is the evangelical ultra-conservative "we hate single mothers" party of the country

I often joke about how great Mexico would be if it was ruled by a scandinavian nation. And then it makes me sad how such a rich and abundant country can be so broken.

Ugh I would not trade our rich tradition for a norse one. Problems can't be fixed. Warmth can not

Personally i love Spain. I think they are so rich in culture and as a society, also 3 of my 4 grandparents are from Spain.

We see Spain as a distant cousin. A fancy cousin. A lot of people would have prefered Spain to still be ruling the country.

We make fun of their accent.

Really great answers, really interesting!

True. I do hear people say they would never visit the USA because of the gun violence. At 47 years old I've never heard a gunshot and I've only seen one person show me a gun(in law psycho Trumper).
At the same time I know it's out of control and we deserve any bad media we get for it.

My parents are from Chapala,Jalisco and they call garbanzos (roasted/steamed and salted) "guasanas".

Is calling them that a regional thing since I ask other people what they call them and they always say "garbanzos".

Why do you think that, rather than the cartels simply going legit at that point? Surely they would realize they are in a unique position to supply a much larger amount of people with the product they're already producing rather than switch to something equally terrible or worse right?

Yep. For example, I'm 32 years old. I'm from the second biggest city in Mexico and I also lived 16 years in one of the most dangerous cities in the country (Torreón).

During the 32 years of my life I have been mugged once, and had my car's battery stolen (bastards...). And that's it.

Not trying to minimize the issues we have here. We have plenty. But the vast majority of people in Mexico will spend their entire lives with minimal experiences with crime.

I know it's hard to believe, considering what you hear in the news, but sometimes it is easy to forget a country is an enormous place.

Quoting myself because although I've taken the replies from the latino OT into account, I'd like a TV focused approach. Does Roku do the job? Last I read, it was outlawed.

Fellow paisanos that are cable cutters, is there any subscription service that lets me watch news channels live? I want to move from SKY's hodgepodge channels to mostly news (series and entertainment are mostly covered by netflix).

Compared to the US, we get so little it's bad and I don't know where to begin.

Is it true that your ultimate goal is to have a taco truck on every street corner of America?

I saw the most preferred food in US and noticed that Italian food is beating us. I must say, the war on food is on.

It does work (and its popularity is rising, along with Android roku-like devices), but I think it will fall anyday. It's still a legit device to Netflix eh.

Do Mexicans like Taqueria El Califa? Because I thought it was fantastic - but it's also a chain. I would be very sad to find out I was in Mexican Arbys. I'd have to rethink a lot of my life.

Yeah, this is funny - I was talking about crime with other expats here (I've been living in Japan for 2 years) and my British, Canadian, and American friends had been mugged before, but not me, the Mexican. It absolutely depends on where you live, I think. I used public transportation every single day, too.

I'm fascinated by weather and different climates. I know it's not like the US where the lower 48 states can differ in temp by over 100 degrees Fahrenheit but are some areas much different than others?

Could you name 5 movies and 5 tv shows(that have english subtitles) from the past 10 years that you consider to be the crème de la crème of Mexican entertainment?

My wife wants our family to go on vacation to the Riviera Maya this year. If you have been, how family friendly (11 and 7 year olds) is it and can you recommend any good resorts to stay at?
