Received Unchain the Wolves from D666 yesterday. I know I've listened to this before but streaming amidst the other thousands of other albums I had in my library so it was just lost in the noise. Honestly, I must have either listened to Cold Steel or Defiance most before Wildfire came out. Then, once Wildfire came out, I pretty much left everything else behind. Were talking streaming where there's no commitment to an album. It's just one of many little, pictures on a list. Now that I've gotten a hold of the actual disc, I've jammed it a few times over the last couple days and I'm pretty surprised at how much of a black metal album this is. There's even a lot of little atmospheric bits sprinkled throughout. Their signature sound is there, but this is a far cry from Wildfire's thrashy sound. Plus this clocks in at 50 minutes where Wildfire is just under 40.
If anything, Wildfire is a lot more balls out and Unchain the Wolves a bit more low key. The band has definitely aged a lot harder over the years. I should have my other order tomorrow or maybe Tuesday with their new EP and the rest of their discography. So I'm pretty excited to see how this band has evolved even though it's all pretty much laid out already. I really enjoyed going through the Death library and seeing them evolve so this should be another fun listen. Now, contrast this with Cannibal Corpse who didn't really change much over the years from what I can tell. I bought their first couple and then the last CD but there doesn't seem to be much difference in the sound. I'd like to buy more of their releases, but it's kind of hard when I feel like it's all kind of samey. Maybe one day.
