I got to admit, I really wanted to like this game after seeing videos and hearing such positive things, but I just don't at all, I don't enjoy it at all. I'm happy for the people that are really enjoying themselves with it, but I genuinely can't understand why it's getting so much widespread praise, other than for it's art direction and setting, which is admittedly very nice and the game looks exceptionally beautiful at times.

They've tried to change up the combat, which is admirable and they've done a much better job of making you a bit more vulnerable against multiple enemies, but it just feels ridiculously clumsy and as janky as ever. Visually none of the movement or combat feels fluid or exciting, and mechanically it just feels like a mess. None of it feels precise, and even after a few hours of trying to get used to it, the detection/distances when it comes to making contact just seems wildly inconsistent. Too many instances where I am just swinging at the wind because the distances between you seem so erratic, and too many times where I get hit by a weapon that missed me by a good foot.

I get what they've gone for with this piecemeal narrative, where all the sidequests open up loads of mini vignettes that form into a broader narrative and I think in some respects it works and it helps in terms of world building, but ultimately it just makes things feel a little bit listless for me, because I don't feel like many of the individual stories, characters or the things they have you doing are typically all that interesting. Again, it's admirable that they're trying to do something different with the story, and make the game world feel like a more dynamic, believable place, but it still ultimately just feels like you don't know what you're doing to who or why because of it.

Ultimately for me it still struggles with it's main issue, which is that conflict between the game trying to make you feel like you should be this master of the shadows and stealth, but ultimately gives you none of the tools to actually do so. The game just doesn't feel mechanically satisfying to play to me, which is something I've always struggled with in AC games, but it actually feels worse here

It's weird, because it's changed up so much when it comes to individual components, but the sum of its parts still feels like it's pretty much the same thing to me. Doesn't really help that it runs like factory seconds dogshit on PC too.

It has an undeniably cool setting, but story is still nonsense just in a different way. Combat is still janky and rote, but just in a different way. Stealth is still clumsy and basic, but in a different way. The movement and animations is still that weird mish mash between exceptionally fluid individual animations, but without any transitional animations between them so you just have this weird abrupt feel to the movement.

I really wanted to like this game, but I feel like I am missing something big that everybody else seems to be getting

Anybody tips for the outsider?

Im playing on normal and he is ripping me apart. This is some dark souls stuff right here
Keep your distance, fully charge your heavy attack, then get close and unleash your heavy attack, it will break his guard and he will fall to the ground, stabby stab stab, rinse and repeat.

I was Lv20 playing on Hard when I beat him, he was also Lv20. Just remember to lure him somewhere off the main roads and other camps, so the wandering soldier won't join the fight and gang up on you.

Damn, that's sad, they (The team, not those guys) were the fathers of Assassin's Creed. So this is the only Montreal now? Weird, I swear Crossing Eden was once talking about the improvements Montreal 1 was doing to their lighting Unity) engine.

In fact I thought they made Watch Dogs 2.

Edit: They did. Montreal 1 is not dead. In fact, given how Unity was, that the leads left is a good sign.
My bad, when I read "AC team" I always think of the leads, which is a very simplistic view I guess. But those internal teams are kinda confusing. How many are there?

Yep Amancio and co not touching the franchise again is really a good thing. People always talk about the glitches, but Unity is filled with bad ideas. And the good ones are often badly put into practice.

Finished the game. I thought it was great, and definitely my favorite Assassin's Creed game. The world was amazing to explore, and the Witcher 3 influence helped a lot; the side quest quality was much higher than in previous installments. There were some issues with the main narrative, unfortunately, which they still need to work on. I hope they don't go back to the annual cycle again after this; I think the extra time really helped. Feudal Japan next, please!
Now that we have Ghost of Tsushima (super hyped!), I am not too bothered that AC won't go to Japan.
I hope they will do China though. They did it for one of the AC side-scrollers. Imagine Origins combat, improved and mixed with material arts, it will be insane!

I'm having so much trouble enjoying this game. It just feels janky and the AI and controls are clumsy. I'll keep giving it a go, but coming from tight games like Mario and Wolfenstein to this is pretty tough.

The combat is definitely janky, but I got used to it after a while. It's certainly not as smooth as what I've come to expect from the franchise, but they did completely revamp the combat. Even if the combat doesn't grow on you, the rest of the game more than makes up for it, I think.

Kind of. I mean there's nothing stopping you from going to them and exploring them but they are likely in much higher level zones than you, so you'd have to be careful on the way.

Everyone gets 200 helix credits free and it's enough to buy a map that puts all the tombs on your map. You could also buy the hermit locations and I think the astrology circles but there's more tombs than all of them, and tombs don't appear as ? on your map whereas the others do.

I was worried I'd missed tombs as I didn't come across any for ages, but once you get to later areas you'll come across them pretty easily while exploring and moving to different areas. Just make sure to always head for the yellow glowing question marks when they crop up.

Thanks a bunch!

I started off wondering what all the fuss was about - but the game has me in its hooks now. I'm levelling my character as an archer, and really enjoying it. The combat is actually fun - to the point where I don't even want to be stealthy anymore.

God is it ever satisfying fighting a guy whose above your level, and beating the tar out of him. And the guys who are way above you... well, it's just a matter of time.

The launch of Assassin's Creed Origins on October 27 will be just the beginning for players who dive into the vast and mysterious open world of Ancient Egypt. From expansions for Season Pass holders to free modes and more for all players, there will be plenty of new adventures that will, in the words of Game Director Ashraf Ismail, "allow players to continue progressing and levelling up their characters in the long run." Get a glimpse of what's in store in the trailer below, then read on for details.

Season Pass

aco_timeline_season_hor_1507597529.jpg

The Hidden Ones (DLC 1) – This expansion takes place years after the events of Assassin's Creed Origins in a new region occupied by a Roman force. Bayek and the new Assassins will clash with the Romans as the Brotherhood continues to grow, and players will have a new level cap. Slated for release in January 2018.

The Curse of the Pharaohs (DLC 2) – The second expansion focuses on Egyptian mythology, pitting players against undead pharaohs and famed Egyptian monsters. Bayek will need to explore a mystical new realm and discover the root of the curse that has brought these creatures to life. This expansion will also raise the level cap again and introduce new skills for Bayek. Scheduled for a March 2018 launch.

The Roman Centurion and Horus packs – These exclusive item packs will grant Season Pass holders a new outfit, weapons, shield, and mount when they become available in November of this year.

500 Helix Credits and an exclusive rare weapon, the Calamity Blade – Both available at launch.

To gain access to all of the above, players will need to own the Season Pass, which is included in Assassin's Creed Origins Gold Edition and is also available for purchase separately.

Free Content

There is also a bevy of new additions coming to the game after launch that will be free for all players, including:

aco_timeline_free_hor_1507597523.jpg

The Trial of the Gods – Face off against the Egyptian gods in boss battles during special timed events, and receive valuable rewards for victory. Kicks off 15 days after launch.

The Nomad's Bazaar – Track down a wandering merchant who will give you daily quests to pursue and reward you with exotic mystery rewards. Available at launch.

Photo Mode – Capture the beauty of the Egyptian landscape, indulge your inner wildlife photographer, and discover interesting photos taken by other players. Available at launch.

Discovery Tour – This new game mode turns the world of Assassin's Creed Origins into a combat-free living museum. Read more about this mode and the educational guided tours in our previous coverage. Available in early 2018.

Horde Mode – Hone your skills with blade and bow against endless waves of enemies in the Gladiator Arena, see how your scores stack up, and challenge your friends asynchronously. Available in early 2018.

Sounds like the people who are liking this are REALLY liking it, and the people who aren't enjoying it really want to but it just doesn't gel with them.

Just came in to say that I'm digging this game way more than I thought I would. Funny, I can't really put my finger one why, but I'll try to stop playing and then just tell myself "one more missions" or one more pit stop. I look up and it's hours later. Truly enjoying the new combat, it's much more satisfying than the old games. Lots of fun!

realized today this is one of my all-time favorite AAA games not made by Nintendo. I've dumped 15 or so hours in, and that enjoyable sense of discovery and awe at the setting has yet to go away. it's a pleasure being in this game's world.

Hmmm, can't seem to get the HDR settings to my liking
Yeah, I couldn't either. It kept wanting to go too dark, and so I would turn it up, and then everything would get too washed out. And it was doing far too much tone-map adjustment (where it gets brighter or darker depending on what's on screen), it was getting annoying. Ended up just turning it off. Nighttime doesn't look as good without HDR, but the daytime looks a lot better and definitely more consistent. Disappointing implementation. I've got other games that support HDR, and they all work and look fine. This one, I hate to say, feels a lot more tacked-on than in other games.

Started this last night. The beginning is just bad. But as I got further into it and opened up more sections on the map I was enjoying it. Exploring is fun. Combat is a little wonky though. Gotta play more before I decide how I really feel about it.

Question: the avenge missions, are there a set amount of them like is it possible to complete them all? Or are they endless and always pop up where someone has died?

Man, I spent 1500 on a purple horse expecting it to be faster .. darn you user you said a few pages ago they make a difference .. all horses run at exactly the same speed ..

Loving the architecture design and the greek/egyptian clash in some areas with less greek prominence.

I started to get back into this game but I have to laugh at some of the side quests and some broken missions.

Rescuing
Harkhouf all stealthily before he decides to book it and goes down (and I die to like 15 guards). I spawn outside the building and he escapes on his own with no one noticing except one guard who chases him but cant catch up to this crouch running man lol

In the middle of what was supposed to be a dramatic cutscene, a bunch of cats showed up and started milling around everyone's feet and mewing. Funny as shit.

Also, the cutscenes are much smoother since the patch.

Totally, in hindsight this is the most obsessed I've been with a game since The Witcher 3, which is an incredible achievement given the quality of recent releases.

This is personal GOAT tier, but the sequel will certainly be objective GOAT tier if they play their cards right.

So I just finished the game, as far as video game stories go this was pretty good especially the last stretch of the game. The last time an AC game felt this good story wise was the AC2. Modern day/Those who came before story was dog shit as usual, they haven't been able to do anything worthwhile with it since AC3 and I doubt they ever will because they are too afraid to commit to any proper story arc with it. What I mean by that is that is in order to have a good modern day story they have to start something with it with real stakes and characters which they are willing to build upon in future games like the did with Desmond Miles.

Here they might as well never address what happened in modern day and it'll make no difference. Just like they've been doing for every AC game after concluding Desmond's story. I thought they'll eventually do something about the fact that Juno was released at the end of AC3 but the last time they even addressed that was in AC4 and nothing since then.

How do I use sleeping darts? I bought the skill for them, it says to push left on the dead but they aren't an option. I can see I am carrying 6, but I don't know how to use them.

i wish that the chain assassination allowed you to actually stealth assassinate two enemies close together. most of the time if they're standing side by side the other guy is alerted before you throw the blade at him.

I like the idea of India myself. They also did India in Chronicles as well, but I'd like to see a setting way earlier than 1841.

But China would be nifty as well.

Just started this and played about an hour or two. Haven't played AC since 3 because I hated it. I always said the only thing that could bring me back would be Egypt, and here we are.

Let me tell you, this one might be my favorite one from what little I played so far.

Oh, and Bayek looks baller with long hair and a beard, I already hate that he's gonna cut it all later lol

I JUST DID THAT MISSION LAST NIGHT AND THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED. Ugh all that effort wasted being stealthy. So frustrating.

The thing that I find astonishing about the setting is that in the years the game is set in, the pyramids have already existed for 2500 years, that's 5 centuries longer than the time between 2017 and the years the game's events take place. That's just wow!

And not just that, for the people in that time period Alexander's conquest happened 300 years ago, in comparison the Industrial Revolution started around 240 years ago from today !

So eventhough this is ancient Egypt, it's not the ancient "ancient Egypt" free of Greek and Roman influence.

I've played this game for 25 hours combined, I'm at Level 25 and I've cleared out parts of the map already...which while being massive, the amount of icons and locations are actually smaller than I expected.

This game might be my Game of the Year.

I'm just giddy playing it, I'm consumed by it.

I was ecstatic to get a legendary pull from the Bazaar this evening.

This game is phenomenal for the type of open world game player I am.
