I'm HR53, unlocked all quests (except the HR100 one), I have the gear I want (until I get some rare decorations), all that's left to do is to kill tempered elder dragons over and over and hope they give me a streamstone to augment my weapons or armor.

Without any friends to play with or help through the game I guess I've finally reached the point where I'm starting to slow down.

I haven't paid much attention to decorations, but all my slots and perks seem to be Level 1. How do I level these up, or do I just need to be farming more tempered mobs?

You can't level them up. There are 3 levels for decorations and 3 for slots. a level 3 decoration (like handicraft) can only be applied to a level 3 slot. Don't know, how to describe it better ... so here's a link. https://monsterhunterworld.wiki.fextralife.com/Decorations

Without any friends to play with or help through the game I guess I've finally reached the point where I'm starting to slow down.

Or ... you are at the point to make friends :)

Why did I skyrocket from like HR15 to 42 after finishing the game?

There's three HR "caps" after beating Xeno'jiiva. Until you beat the quest at each respective cap, your HR will continue to climb "behind the scenes" but won't show up until you beat the cap quest. The three caps and their quests are:

HR29 (two tempered Bazelgeuse)
HR49 (tempered Kirin)
HR100

I'm guessing you jumped from 15 to 29, didn't notice, beat the two tempered Bazelgeuse and jumped to 42 and then noticed your rank had changed.

Just got to Rank 50 after beating that Rank 49 Kirin (still a fight I hate playing) with some people. Good stuff and think that's gonna do it. I hope the new monsters that show up are fun to fight!

Haha yep that's exactly what happened. I saw the "cap is removed" prompt but didn't realise I was accumulating rank behind the scenes. Awesome!

So far Kirin is the single worst fight in the game for long sword users. Man is that shit boring. it's like 30 minutes of hitting once and dodging. Diablos is pretty annoying too, but not nearly as bad

Grinding out these Arena battles for a combination of getting the Greatsword and the 50 arena missions trophy, and my god these A-Rank times are insane. Managed to get within 30 seconds on the double diablos arena playing with a random guy, but it certainly didn't feel like we could have realistically been any faster. Wish I had the talent of those youtube hunt speedrunners :L

Man, I just tried to use a Heavy Bowgun in an arena quest and what a cumbersome load of crap. Limited mobility and distance management in solo play seems nearly impossible.

Probably been mentioned before but if your looking to try and make progress for the crown trophies, the event quest with 5 monsters dishes out crowns a lot. Done it 3 times and got 3 different gold crowns for various small/large monsters.

Okay, beginner here. I keep on finding all sorts of items that I could use in combat. But I don't know if I have to use them with the square button, or on my slingshot, or equip them any other way. How does one know the difference and how does one use the different items?

It's all so convoluted at the start. I hope the game will click soon.

There's two methodes:

a) hold L1 und unse the radial menu by selecting the item and letting go of the stick (you can customize this menu)
b) hold L1 and look at the lower right corner, you see the item down there changed to an item bar. Now you can change items via square and circle. Let got of L1 after you found your item and press square again.

Don't forget that except Sword and Shield you have to have your weapon sheathed to use items

It goes to show how different the weapons are in this game. To a hammer user, Kirin is a joke. But Anajanath on the other hand.............sshhiieett. that very short hammer range gives a huge disadvantage against that monster. And yet people who play long blade, glaive be saying that dude is easy.

Do Tempered monsters have a better chance of rare drops?

Say I want a gem, is it better to do Tempered runs?
If you want any kind of monster drops, you're better off with regular investigations with as many gold/silver rewards as possible. Tempered are for augmentation stones and better decorations.

SFV Event is is the gathering hall at the arena counter under challenges.

I ran it enough. I wonder if it's possible to farm gold crowns from it?

Someone once posted a video of some dude getting killed by the wind metal dragon, and then the moment he came back, died again. shit was funny.

the purple box rewards are always decorations.
I did not know this. I got ONE tempered investigation with 3 purple rewards. I think im go and do that when I get home.

Man, I just tried to use a Heavy Bowgun in an arena quest and what a cumbersome load of crap. Limited mobility and distance management in solo play seems nearly impossible.

Man, heavy bow gun is trash. I always see people use the light bowgun over the light bow gun. I thought i'd like the heavy bow gun because of that gatling gun special it has can dish out a some crazy damage. but man, you move soooooo fucking slow, its a complete pain in the ass when a monster is riding your ass. cant put no distance between you and the monster. gotta keep rolling and what do you know, your out of stamina......... -_-
I completely gave up on using heavy bow gun as my secondary. move over to hunting horn for secondary. Im liking this weapon, altho, im trying to get used to those songs.

Epic kill shot, wish it was from a side angle. Leaping thrust with the lance over some fire.

I dont know wtf is going on in that picture.

Not knowing how to use HBG is not the same thing as claiming it's trash. Because it's a very powerful and versatile weapon with numerous playstyles and builds. Guns are customizeable. Mods, bullet capacities, special ammo, there's a lot more possibilities in its arsenal than simply point and shoot.

Angola / Zaire border region.

I recommend you take a bunch of items u are curious about into the training area to get a feel for them. Using them in there won't deplete your inventory at all. You can equip or use items using the radial menus (open with L1 and select with right stick) or the item bar, which you cycle through on the dpad and equip with square. You can customize your radial menus from the pause screen and you can customize the order of items on the item bar by opening your pouch and pressing triangle.

Items like tranq bombs and traps will be directly used when you press square, whereas slinger items will be equipped to the slinger when you press square, and can be aimed with L2 and fired with R2, when your weapon is sheathed. Note: "pressing square" here refers to equipping from the item bar, for equipping from the radial menu, the items are equipped/used by holding L1 and making the selection with the right stick.

I have my main item loadouts organized into three radial menus, one from prep, one for battle, and one for field excursions, which I swap through on the fly. I rely on the item bar for frequently used items like mantles, potions, and antidotes.

Is it pretty likely that Capcom will take the SFV approach and offer all future MHW content, like a potential G update, as DLC, rather than a standalone release? I can't remember if Capcom did something similar for any of the Japanese MH G versions.

For augmenting weapons, what is a better option: higher affinity or an extra gem slot? I'm not sure what to focus on.

As a Glaive user I can confirm. He is very easy. Nerg and Xeno as well. Xeno is a joke. So easy to get all buffs and he cant do shit against you.
