I'm a decent way through Saejima's section in Yakuza 4 and I can believe how good this game is

I've played through 1, 2, 3, 0, and Kiwami, and if 4 keeps this quality all the way through it's probably going to end up as my favourite

The Saejima stuff has rules so far and I adored the Akiyama part. It's a good, good game
4 is incredible. It's a testaments to their originality that Kiryu has the weakest plot.

I've put off playing this for so long because just conceptually I was against the idea of not playing as Kiryu and being split across so many protagonists, but at this point I'm kind of bummed that they used one of their four slots on Kiryu and didn't introduce someone else

I'd argue that Kiryu being there actively hurt the game, if anything. If it wasn't for the title there's no reason for him being involved in the plot at all, really.

I didn't play 4, but I immediately lost interest in 5 when I finished Kiryu's chapters and had to start playing as someone else

Kiryu makes the game fantastic
5? probably

His stuff is the strongest I would say, but the rest of the game is hardly worth missing just because he drops off for a bit. Shinada's stuff is great, and the Saejima/Baba interactions is some of the best stuff in the series. Haruka's plot despite some pretty gross content is really strong overall as well. 5 is an incredibly strong game despite it kind of limping to the finish line there at the end, both literally and structurally lol >.<

what gross content is in Haruka's story? You can put it in spoilers if you don't want to reveal it all

Nothing really spoilery:
idk guys played quite a bit of Haruka's stuff in Y5 and...it's coming across as kind of gross. The handshake game makes me cringe every time I play it (sniffing fingers? /really/?), and Park's treatment of Haruka, using her brothers and sisters at the orphanage as leverage to exploit her labor, is pretty disgusting really. The contrast of Haruka both putting up and accepting this wheras Kiryu/Saejima before her would have crippled people over that kind of thing hurled at them (threatening the orphanage is a plot driver for Kiryu in 4, Saejima literally beats a man within half an inch of his life at the start of Part 2 in this very game for threatening his brother) makes the game's opinion of women seem rather retrograde, even if that wasn't intended it cant help but come across that way after the previous 30 hours of gameplay with the prior two male characters being mostly a glorious power fantasy. The makeup artist person who encourages her to go on a diet that she obviously doesn't need and to take pills to win is really just beyond the pale. Her climax action in the battles where she takes clothes off is...yeah. Her design is just unsettling all around. Serious uncanny valley vibe coming off her static, golfball sized eyes that seem on average about twice as big as any other character she does battle with or encounters. The interview with the dirty old man mag where haruka gets asked point blank if she'd fuck a middle aged man just floored me. Seriously, what in the /fuck/? The game then punishes you for not answering in the affirmative by a lower fanboost and thus lower stat growth, effectively sending the message to little girls everywhere that if you want to succeed in life make sure to assuage the sexual desires of creepy fucking old dirtbags.

I don't know maybe the game is going to swerve on me and condemn all of this for what it is or I'm just missing the satire, but yeah man this is just not good. I kind of am holding out hope though due to the opening of the game when Kiryu got pissed off at the guys in the ramen shop cracking jokes about all idol stars being abused and exploited, but thus far man this is really turning me off the game. This isn't the first time the series has rubbed me the wrong way with its treatment of women. The porn cards for completing quests in 0 were pretty bad, especially in nonsilly quests where for helping women characters you get a softcore striptease video. Club Cabaret, while I loved the hell out of it mechanically, effectively reduced women to stock animals to wheel out and shape to your own desires regardless of what they think. I'm not trying to be a debbie downer here or anything because I have loved every game in the series I've played, but it really needs to step its game up on how it treats women. The fact that the only playable female in the series is treated like Haruka is is pretty damning. I understand that this is a series for Japan and cultural norms are different, but that still doesn't mean they shouldn't get critique over it. Representation like this is just damaging, and I don't think hiding behind the shield of culture really flies when it's this blatant.

Anyways again sorry for the rant because I really do love these games, but this is something that's been eating at me for a while in this series and I just needed to get that off my chest.

Really dampened my opinion of the game overall. I'm not one to give passes on this sort of thing due to "cultural differences" tho, so ymmv.

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone here knows what Yakuza 6's Troublr name was in Japanese?
As far as I remember, it hadn't a catchy/funny name like Troublr in the Japanese Version. Kiryu meets the guy, Torafuru, who tells him that he started a social network (SNS) in order to make the city a safer place. Then Kiryu gets "Trouble Missions" via this "SNS". But it's been quite a while since I've played through the game so maybe I'm misremembering.
I really dig the localization!

Anyone know if item drop rates go up in Ishin depending on difficulty in the battle dungeon?

Still trying to get my hands on a damned piece of fluorite. My sword is about to be maxed out and I need to get through the trainer to take it to the boost levels. Is there an easier way to get a leveled sword? Is the farming requirements better for the other swords?
I like Saejima a lot, but I'd love him even more if it didn't look like his character design was ripped right out of Hatred
He rocks the buzzcut in 5 and Ishin (maybe 6 too?), which is a huge improvement imo

Darn right. Best thing Seijima ever did was get a damn haircut. Looks way better from 5 and up. Its my entire basis on why I like him so much now!

As for item drop rates, I honestly forget. I do know certain items only drop in certain levels so the first thing I'd make sure your trying to get the item in the correct stage.

But I do remember the grinding for quite a while to get certain items... good luck getting all the dragon materials if your going for them, I can tell you they all drop on that final mission against the final boss, a short, yet tough mission that I must have replayed it 50+ times!

Anyway, we've got some new vids from Hokuto Ga Gotoku showing some more combat stuff:

I hope they manage to use the SNS idea again after refining it a bit for the next mainline Yakuza game. While some of the trouble missions are fairly straight forward, there are some that are basically side stories in their implementation and really use the extra freedom you get when exploring the city well (i.e. really exploring the rooftops and other areas).

I believe they don't. Welcome to the world of gacha gacha.

Looks good!! "Just Hiko" sounds interesting. If they make a new samurai game, this will work great on it. My only complaint here is the scoring popups. I'd like to have the option to disable those popups.

edit: added the third vid.

Now we can put only two links in a post?

Yeah, only two vids per post (thanks for adding the third one!)
There might be an option in the game to disable the scoring (the team are usually fairly good with stuff like this, Kiwami 2 had a nice range of display and audio options)

Very nice shots. Bar some low res sign textures, its looking really nice. I'd love to see what Yakuza 3 looks like with that emu.

Oh man. I already have the Platinum Trophies for both Yakuza 3 and 4 but I'd probably play them again if they were to be remastered.

Definetely gonna pre-order 6 even though I have never pre-ordered a game before. 0 has so many hours worth of content that I feel sorry for grabbing it on a sale.

Strange that 0 is bundled with 6 and not Kiwami. I mean, Haruka is pretty much the most important character in 6, so it'd have made more sense to go with Kiwami and 6 from a story standpoint.

Just wanted to say how impressed I was with Majima in 0. Like, wow. They did some incredible shit with his character, and the ending and postcredits scene hit me pretty hard. Also appreciated Shibusawa, Awano and Kuze, their respective roles in the story, and the acting. Facing off against Kuze was hype everytime.

And I completely forgot who Nishikiyama was, so it'll be interesting to play kiwami with a better understanding of his character. I've got 6 pre-ordered, but I kinda wanted to wait for Kiwami 2 before finishing Kiryu's story.

Great soundtrack too. I just regret not having the time to delve into the substories. The few that I completed were hilarious, but I prefer being able to beat a game's main path and having the time for other games than losing a hundred hours in one game, like I did with Yakuza 3. That shit consumed my time.

Well on the bright side you can just hit up the side stories via the Premium Adventure mode should you feel like it :)

And yeah, I loved Dojima's 3 top dogs as well, pretty much right below Ryuji (from 2) as my favourite villains of the series (especially Kuze).

0 and the added scenes to Kiwami make Nishiki go from a random fuckboy I didn't care about to one of the most compelling characters in the series. The karaoke song about him in Kiwami legit makes me cry like a baby, haha.

Yeah, I know and I would love to, but it's really either moving on to other games or not having time for a bunch of other stuff in the backlog, unfortunately... Maybe I'll go back to it some day.

I've skipped 2 entirely for one reason or another, and I don't remember the other bad guys (only played 1,3 and 4 once each and it was back when they came out), so I don't have a point of comparison, but I don't think any of the others made this strong an impression on me. Loved Awano's constantly defiant face, Kuze's agressive look and Shibusawa's calm demeanor.

Another reason the fights in this game are hype is the fact that they can happen anywhere. Tight hallways, makeshift hospital rooms, bathrooms, parks, clubs, wherever. That's really satisfying to me, as it lends some unpredictability to the game (even if the game warns you when shit is about to go down).

I'm basically rediscovering Yakuza with a new perspective.

Didn't really pay attention to the credits but I noticed Nagoshi didn't direct it. Did he have any creative input at all or is he entirely dedicated to Hokuto?

That's really exciting to read because "best-friend-turned-foe" is one of my favorite tropes in fiction, overplayed as it may be.

Yeah, all three characters were fantastic in their own way, and I loved Dojima in this as well (when you consider he's not really had any screen time until now its nice that he got his time to shine). As for Nagoshi, I actually don't know what his role in 0 was to be honest. He's always been the public face of the series to me, but I honestly couldn't tell you who did what on the games! But bare in mind this wouldn't have anything to do with Hokuto - 0 was released back in 2015, its just taken this long to get released in English. Hopefully the team are hard at work with polishing up Hokuto in its last couple of weeks before Shin RGG goes full steam ahead!

Well, someone posted that they did a complete playthrough of 3 on the rpcs3 forums. Said it was super buggy, had broken visuals, and was pretty slow....but hey, progress! Even if Sega drags on it time is in our favor regardless due to emulation.

Damn, I'm completely out of the loop on some of this stuff. That's pretty far back!

Yeah, Dojima as a great mastermind behind bars was pretty cool, too.

I'm excited for Hokuto even if no translation has been announced. Excited because we're getting a great formula in an entirely different setting, and with all of the engine's improvements.

I think it'll be a mistake if they set the new Yakuza mostly in Kamurocho again. It's an important location but it's really run its course.

Not sure how most of the fans see this, but that's my take.

Unless they are planning for the main plot of Shin RGG to be different to the online game announced, Kamurocho will once again play a very big part going by what has been revealed so far. Plus with all the time spent in recreating the map in the new engine, there's no way its not getting used at least once more in the main series. I'm totally up for a brand new place to explore, just as long as its as feature complete as Kamurocho is (in terms of places explore and mini games to play). I just don't think it'll happen in the next game. I reckon we'll still get two cities to explore but Kamurocho will still be the main one. Purely my own guess work, and that's just because I've got to wait until September before we get any new info on the game!

Omi Alliance took Kamurocho right? Tojo must have been very weaken after Yakuza 6.

Will Daigo fuck it up again in Y6 ? The guy just can't catch a break.

Oh no, personally I feel that anything in officially released content is completely fair game to post. It's a little bit trickier with Y/RGG due to the time lapse between releases but as long as it doesn't directly correlate to plot details of the missing game(s) I don't have any problem with no spoiler tags. Personally I find souls threads basically unreadable due to how spoiler frenzied that fanbase has become, so I'm more on the lax side when it comes to them regardless :)

Its no spoilers for 6. Those particular things mentioned in the spoiler have no bearing on the story of 6 what so ever.

Yeah Omi now control Kamurocho though its not been explained how it happened. I mean, I blame Daigo for sure as its probably his fault, but I'm still very interested to learn what went down. Should make for a subtly different Kamurocho post 6.
