Listened to the previous podcast and the A Few Good Men/ Switch port begging discussion was pretty cathartic.

He just started a new job and wanted to take a break from the show while he got into that.

Sea of Thieves - I've no doubt it's going to be a success for Rare and Microsoft based on that closed beta. I've gone back and watched all the developer play sessions on their YouTube channel and I'm now working my way through the run of Tavern Talk podcasts they did.

You guys talk about how you won't play Dark Souls because it's difficult, yet you grew up with nes games and play online shooter, which both are way, way more difficult than Dark Souls. DS is a single player game, where you can grind, cheese the ai or learn the enemies and after that the game becomes normal. You probably heard it a million times by now, but you really should play a Dark Souls game. And it "fit's the switch perfectly". :)

They all played some of Bloodborne with CJ playing the most, but at least in old games you can pause, and you can't really do that in these games, so you need dedicated time... which can be a problem if you have a family. And, games you like a kid aren't always what you like as an adult.

Great episode this week, btw. And thanks for the link to the Snatcher play though, Greg! I thought a lot of those early playthroughs were lost in Ustream or Justin TV or whatever was used before Twitch.

Well, now with the Switch (aka dad's platform) you can pause :D

PS. Which episode did they talk about bloodborne?

Honestly, I may play the first one because of the pausing on the Switch. When I played through Bloodborne, which I just think is eh, it was frustrating that I had to dedicate a chunk of time with no interruptions because of the pausing issue; I don't mind losing a multiplayer game if I have to get up to do something, but I hated losing an hour of time because I died in Bloodborne because I had to get up for something spontaneously.

Hmm. I don't remember. A while ago. Let me see if I can find it.

Edit: Here's one episode. I think they talked about it more than that. Maybe look at more episodes around that time. http://www.playeronepodcast.com/2015/03/30/438-talk-to-the-doll/

CBake mentioned Dana Jongewaard and that was a name that I totally forgot about. It's a bit sad how many people from the 2000s game press just basically disappeared into other careers.

This podcast she was on is almost 10 years old. Yikes. lol
Man, GFW Radio was just the greatest thing. Still wishing for Jeff Green and Shawn Elliott to come back in podcast form with some sort of regularity.

Sometimes I lay awake at night and worry what we as a people are going to do when Ethan goes to see Ready Player One and loves it.

Also, I got back into Pokemon TCG on the computer. I'm still using decks I made when the game launched, so I really should tweak them since it seems things have been rebalanced since when I was last into it. Does anyone play it still? I need some deck ideas.

As a fellow TCL P605 and eyeglasses owner, HDR really is a wild difference! When it gets bright it makes me squint.

I only have an OG PS4 but HDR still works on it.

The built-in Roku YouTube app supports 4K/HDR too.

Let's start the countdown on the next 4K TV purchase on the show. :P

Listening back I wasn't as happy with my 4K talk. I understand that Phil and Greg aren't as interested in this stuff because hey, I was in that position too until very recently. I do think the benefit is similar to when HD first started to be a thing in gaming and just as back then - I wasn't interested until I was interested and had funds available to do the upgrade. At E3 last year I watched Forza 7 being played in 4K and it was impressive - I'd seen 4K games displayed on very large screens before. What really started to chip away at me was seeing Shadow of the Colossus at PSX in 4K HDR close up on 55" or so TVs. Then Sea of Thieves actually being good made me want to upgrade away from the original Xbox One SKU which is a horrible doorstop of a machine. Seemed like I needed to go X to at least future-proof things.

Just as with my original foray into HDTVs back in 2004 it took a TV set being more reasonably priced than other models while being compatible with the 4K HDR signals being output by these new game consoles - one that wasn't just "4K" as a marketing line (because I'd seen the images on Twitter from people who'd bought an Xbox One S or X with all the red !s that their TV didn't support the right kind of 4K). The TCL P605 fit that bill - good scores for gaming in reviews and a really attractive price.

The other thing about the set I ended up with... honestly, even though I'd seen 4K games before... I didn't appreciate the difference until it was in my house in the spot where my 1080 Samsung used to be. Then you boot up the PS4 or Xbox One and it hits you how vibrant and ridiculous the colors are. Playing Overwatch on it - I hadn't before appreciated the clarity and color depth of everything. Or booting up that Microsoft Insects demo - it really does a good job demonstrating the "before/after" of this tech. Even after watching plenty of Digital Foundry videos, I wasn't prepped for how clear everything would be or how much of an upgrade it would truly be over what I had before. Overwatch, SotC, Knack II, Forza Horizon 3, Sea of Thieves (which was just HDR but not enhanced for 4K yet in the betas), Monster Hunter World...many jaw dropping moments.

The thing of it is - the message "hey this really is better" is very hard to deliver or show in marketing. You can't get an idea of what this is in YouTube videos. Not even so much on the floor of E3 or PSX. Really only after booting up the Xbox/PS4/Switch on this and trying different enhanced and not enhanced games did I really appreciate what these mid-cycle console refreshes are offering. As prices go down and quality goes up on these sets I'm sure more people will give it a go. But, holy crap it is awesome.

As someone who is partially colorblind, I wonder if I would be able to notice and appreciate the color depth of new televisions of if it would be lost on me.

Nice addendum.

I have two questions. How does the switch look on the 4K display, since it does not support such high resolution (and some game like Xenoblade below 900p)

Also after you sent some time with the new tv and adjust to it, I'm curious about you reaction when you go back and check a game on a 1080p tv. Will it look like garbage like sd to looked in comparison to hd and there is no going back. Or it will be worse, but not that much.

1080p on a 40-50inch is not that much for a tv in 2018 especiallly considering that phones and tables have 1080p or higher resolution and they have 5-10 inch displays.

Haven't listened to this week's podcast yet, but this just further my opinion that I should probably upgrade soon. I'm still using a 720p 46" Panny Plasma that I sit 9 feet from.

Just when you thought that CJ had gotten all of the gloating out of his system on the podcast...

GOAT GLOAT GLOAT. I'm not the first or the last person to buy a 4KTV on a podcast or come around to thinking that it's a worthwhile upgrade that more people should consider seriously. :D And I know for a long time I was a 4K detractor - mostly because it's a murky pool of marketing lines vs. "real" 4K and all that.

Re: the Switch - it still looks great. It's obviously not as high resolution as 4K enhanced games but there are still enough of those even on PS4 and Xbox One that it's not that jarring. Plus the colors on the P605 are so good that it really makes games like DQ Builders and Splatoon 2 pop. Good question re: going back to 1080p for a game - the thing that's most noticeable to me now already is color definition in TV shows/movies. Since I didn't notice much difference between 720p and 1080p before, I think it would be harder for me to really notice otherwise. Plus the conditions in my office room are different than the 1080p set in the living room where I'm sitting much further away.

The TV I got is LED and I know there are many people that praise the quality of plasmas. It is getting to be a good time to upgrade though as TVs get better and better and the good features are becoming more affordable.

Well that turned quickly from boasting to "resolution shaming", didn't it...? You've changed, man... you've changed. I don't even know who you are, anymore.

Definitely got me thinking about getting that TCL, I was going to wait for OLEDs to get cheap but $600 I can justify even if I only use it for a few years.

I already have a Pro and plenty of games that support 4K HDR. With Forza Horizon 4 and Halo 6 this fall I might as well get an X also. My Xbox One also runs like crap and I definitely still use it for Overwatch and Minecraft.

Speaking of 4K and HDR from a little bit ago, is there anything good on Netflix or Amazon Prime to use as a demonstration? I have access to a 4K HDR set for the next few days and want to see how it looks. I have an Apple TV 4K that I travel with that I'll be using and I already have Netflix and Amazon, so I figured I'd use them if I can.

Hearing Phils story about selling a heap of his games is giving me more motivation to do an upcoming cull I have to do. Buying my own place and have come to the realisation that maybe I don't need over 2,000 video games. Managed to do up a list of 300+ games to part ways with which will help fund stuff I need for the place (exciting adult things like a Vacuum Cleaner, Microwave and oh so much more). But man it feels like I'm killing off my children by parting ways with some of these. That said I'm sure I can use the money Shantae on the GBC will get me over whatever joy I could get if I ever wanted to play the cart again.

I loaded up a couple things on YouTube to try it out.

This walk through Shinjuku
This walk through Shibuya
This other walk through Shinjuku
(spot the pattern here?) If you do a search in YouTube for 4K Ultra HD you'll get a buncha different stuff.

Also here's a list of Netflix 4K content.

You could probably also check out Digital Foundry videos or footage of Xbox One X games.

Hey,

Just wanted to share with you guys something cool I stumbled upon since you love old school games and the idea of preserving the history of video games. Fine folks at rpgcodex released massive 500 pages book about the history of crpg. For FREE!!!

"The CRPG Book Project is a collaborative, non-profit effort to create a free, easily available ebook on the history of Computer Role-Playing Games. Our goal is to gather all the knowledge currently spread across countless websites, books, forums and minds in a single, accessible and visually pleasing tome – for free."

I'm personally amazed at the production values of this book and the amount of work that must have been put into making it. And yet I haven't seen a lot of buzz on the internet.

https://crpgbook.wordpress.com/about-the-project/

https://crpgbook.files.wordpress.com/2018/02/crpg_book_1-0-3.pdf

It's mostly about computer games, not console games, but still, you might find it interesting.

A bit off topic, but they were talking about the trailer a couple of episodes ago.

A while back I finished reading Ready Player One after all the talk about it on the show. I was going to post about it, but then Phil talked about the 372 Pages We'll Never Get Back podcast, so I wanted to listen to that before talking about the book.

And wow, what a book. All the talk on the show about it always made me curious and then the movie pushed me over the edge (no, I didn't buy it -- I downloaded the eBook through my library).

After all I'd heard, I expected the book to be even more crammed with throwaway pop culture references than it was (maybe it was and so many of them buzzed over my head). But what really got me is the caliber of the writing. Early on the 372 Pages podcast felt kind of like it over-parsed the book (a long chunk of it over the question of what a "Cheshire grin" was all about) and I thought that maybe it would perversely be somehow unfair to this book that is deserving of the derision. But they absolutely nail the construction that happened over and over in the book: generic explanation of thing -> someone does something -> restatement of generic explanation of thing. Never mind the habit of inserting a reference rather than applying any effort to being descriptive.

Haven't quite finished that podcast (season)... but apparently they're back and doing Armada. I remember reading the early excerpt for that one and being flabbergasted by how bad it was. That was before reading Ready Player One. But I feel like my reaction to the first chapter of Armada was even more negative than my feelings about Ready Player One. I'm almost tempted to read Armada now. Why would I want to hurt myself like that?

Still, while the trailer doesn't look very good, it wouldn't have surprised me if Ready Player One could have been built into a pretty good movie. Having seen the trailer, I think it would be a bit more surprising... but with a bit of fleshing out and the injection of real human souls into the proceedings, it's a concept that could deliver a fun movie experience.

Huh, I guess it's a weird coincidence but Pat Contri talked about completing his NES collection (carts only, he still needs manuals) and feeling somewhat unfulfilled for doing so.

It feels like as people age, they just don't care anymore. It's interesting hearing him go crazy about buying the Gold NES Championship cart (and personally flying out just to pick it up from the buyer) to being kind of apathetic about owning every US NES game.
