Is anybody else getting this weird "halo" effect with the scanlines on 720p?

That's got to be your TV.

Here are my scanlines (regular on left, hybrid on right...too bloomy) at 720p.

What's the current status on the custom firmware? Is there a guide for setting it up?

If you're talking about the Club Nintendo SFC-style controller, they're a tiny bit different. Discussion over on it in the Super NT thread over at Atari Age:

http://atariage.com/forums/topic/242970-fpga-based-videogame-system/page-313#entry3965461

The voltage / wiring or signaling to the classic vs the Wiimote may be a tiny bit different also, since there are a couple of OG SNES -> Wii / Wii U adapters that don't work right on the NES/SNES classic, even though the connector is the same:

For example, this one works on the classics (I own this one):

https://www.amazon.com/NES-SNES-Controller-Adapter-Classic-Wii/dp/B01MU8SXC2

Whereas the older revision that looks just like it doesn't:

https://www.amazon.com/Mayflash-NES-SNES-Controller-Adapter/dp/B00B2K0C8M
Well this was news to me, thanks for the links.

No issues that I've heard of with using Club Nintendo controllers with the Classic Mini though, nor with the Classic Mini controllers on connected to a Wii Remote, unless you heard otherwise? Just compatibility issues with third party adapters?

Saves are fucked, don't bother. But, you just put it on the root of an SD card and put it in your NT, like normal ass firmware.

Still worth doing for all those roms where saves aren't supported (> 75% of snes library) or if you don't care about saving. The loading time is far faster than my Super Everdrive and I hear the comparability is better too. Also, the UI is better than using a Super Everdrive (more characters fit in filename, filenames scroll if too big, UI is consistent with rest of Super Nt, etc)

Yeah I really just want to use the CFM to play Contra 3 right now, as my cart is being a serious piece of crap, so I don't care about saves.

Does the CFM stack on existing firmware or replace it? I'm still on stock. Should I update to the newest first, then install CFM, or does it not matter?

As some already noticed there is a problem with the scanlines on the Super Nt. Especially on 1080p60 and if you turn of V Interplation they are placed between pixels.

I don't understand how this could have happend after Kevtris was working with My Life in Gaming for so many months - how did they find the problems with some obscure games, but didn't notice that basics like the scanlines and limited range/full range are messed up?

I found a temporary solution until Kevtrix will fix the problem and rework the scanlines: You can use the scaler settings (HQ2x, HQ3x, HQ4x) to move the scanlines. This will change the graphics slightly, but at least the scanlines (especially in 1080p60 mode) look much better that way.

Settings working for me:

1080p60, 1462x1200, HQ3x, Disable H Interpolation OFF, Disable V Interpolation ON, Normal Scanlines, Scanline Depth 128-192
720p60, 877x720, No Scaler, Disable H Interpolation OFF, Disable V Interpolation ON, Normal Scanlines, Scanline Depth 128-192

Another problem is that the Super Nt identifies itself as Limited Range device, but the output is Full Range or somewhere in between. So I would recommend to try setting your monitor/TV to Full Range and Gamma 2.4. Results may vary depending on your monitor/TV.

Just tried your HQ3x settings, have to say the scanlines look like they actually work properly, also it's very clear and sharp, there is a bit of colour blending going on in backgrounds, but hell it really clears up the blockiness, as that's not how Snes games should look either :)

Pretty sure they're fine. Just that there are some minor electrical differences of some sort along with a little bit of build difference. Just pointing out there are some minor differences, they might matter to some folks.

But yeah they are like 95% similiar in feel, despite whatever minor differences in build, paying for the Club Nintendo ones seems kinda silly.

Then again I'm sure some people would make fun of us for buying a $200 console when we could just use emulators or mod a SNES classic, all for some minor differences *shrug*.

It replaces the existing firmware. It doesn't matter what firmware you start with because it will get completely replaced. You can always freely move from any firmware to any other one (newer, older, it doesn't matter).

Does anyone archive the firmwares? I can't see an older version list at Analogue. I knew someone who wanted to test something between 4.0 and 4.1 but couldn't find 4.0 anywhere.

Good question. Not as far as I know. Given that they're only 8MB each they should be easy to collect/host.

All the Nt Mini jailbreak versions are hosted by Kevtris, and all the Super Nt jailbreak versions will be available via Github. I would expect there to be a jailbreak firmware release that roughly corresponds with each official Analogue release, so there's that.

I know I stressed patience a few pages back, but I'm surprised a new firmware wasn't released today. For the first week it felt like we were getting one every other day.

Yeah, I was kind of expecting one today, too. Don't really care as I am enjoying the shit out of it, and know one is coming. But, a fix for the limited color range would be greatly appreciated. Either any remaining bugs are harder than the initial ones or they are just hoping to have a good-sized update at once instead of a bunch of smaller ones.

Whatever. I decided on Dragon Quest VI as my next game. Never played it before, only 1 and 2 for the NES. I immediately dig how the game looks.

Yeah, I really want to dive into Terranigma, but I'm also really excited about all the rpgs I've picked up for Switch and PS4 over the last month, so I'm going to put it off just a while longer until the color correction and gamma options come out. I hope he forces Full RGB, because otherwise I'll have to leave it at limited since some of my other devices don't support it and it's a pain to switch it back and forth.

Is that set of controllers available on Amazon Japan? I can't find any of the four dedicated 8bitdo controller patterns there.
As far as I've seen, they're only sold via resellers if they've been available.

Ohhhhhhh shiiiiiit. Where are you?? Maybe someone looked up the price on their site and assigned you duty accordingly...

Well makes my decision to just order to the states and then pick it up easier. No sense in risking it.

The wait for the restock is killing me. I keep wondering if I should have just settled for the transparent one. Don't think I would be happy with the black one even though it's all that's left.

Aaah, I see. Thanks for the heads up!
NP~ From what I've seen on AmazonJP, the prices are pretty decent compared to a US Amazon shipment - and pretty much next day service even w/o prime around Tokyo.

Also, I forget, which one is the better one, bluetooth or 2.4Ghz?? Isn't one of them only for the SNES Mini and one is for anything?

The black one is slick, really nicely made. I wouldn't hesitate on it.

Are they opening preorders for a new batch in March, April or so? Currently, only the black model is available and probably not for long.

Assuming that something like that can actually happen, does someone who misrepresents the value of something as a loophole end up getting penalized, or does the penalty simply get handed off to the recipient in the form of the duty fee?

It's down to the recipient, as the importer of the goods. The fact is, the vast majority of people who seem to have avoided customs and tax fees until this point have been extremely fortunate.

I live in Fukuoka, so it always takes a few days lol.

Yeah, the prices are not too shabby, but their models are pretty confusing since as you said they make a difference between bluetooth and 2.4 Ghz even tho technically 2.4 Ghz IS bluetooth.

That being said, the 2.4 one which is designed for the SNES Mini only works wireless when using the receiver, so it only works with a cable when using it with a PC/Mac etc. and not wireless. The bluetooth one works wireless obviously, but has no receiver packed in.
So one reason I want the new SF30 ones available on Analogue's site is, they are bluetooth controllers and work with with the SNES receiver as well as wirelessly with PC/Mac etc., so at that price point it's pretty good compared buying it seperately.

I'm just afraid of faulty controllers and sending them back to Amazon US. Dunno how they handle that stuff when shipping abroad, so I would rather buy it off of Amazon Japan for convenience reason. I hope all that makes sense. :/

sexy! how easy is this to do?

Easy, you need a T6 screwdriver (T5? One of the torx ones anyway).

Be careful of the very top board when you are pulling it out though (by the usb port), I managed to break an LED somehow, but I took it apart and put it back together like a dozen times before I broke it somehow. Still works, but I can't tell when it is on/off any more.

A d-pad swap didn't help much at all for me, I had to do the tape mod. I ended up with one like this:

https://imgur.com/9bcCJIx

courtesy of this reddit thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/miniSNESmods/comments/7w6j8f/8bitdo_sn30_terrible_dpad/

I synced mine with my PC (X + Start when powering on) and used Higan to flip between Contra (NES) and SF2 Turbo to test. Because one needs somewhat sensitive diagonals (SF for jumping towards / back / up) and the other needs less sensitive diagonals (Contra, for laying on the ground under bullets and shooting diagonally).

I tried the tape under the dpad in the middle (didn't do enough), 2 layers of tape under (too unsensitive), diagonal tape, tape just covering the inside parts. This one was the best.

My dpad issue was related to the rubber pad underneath the plastic d-pad. FIirst I tried a donor d-pad. Slightly better but still going diagonal when I pressed down.

I then replaced the rubber pad but kept the donor d-pad. It worked. The d-pad felt a little mushy though so I put the 8bitdo d-pad back in and problem still resolved.

So if you have trouble with your dpad, try the rubber pad as well. Any clone or official controller should work.

I tried several combos - OEM rubber + 8bit dpad, vice versa, etc. Didn't seem to change much to me. Tape still made a much bigger difference. I think if you've got it open already, do the tape mod while you're at it.

And it was cheaper than the $12 I spent to cannibalize an OEM SNES controller.

I used a junk USB clone controller so no real loss. I played through Ninja Gaiden on the NES with it since it requires a lot of quick and precise dpad movements. I'm confident mine is fixed.

Looks like 8bitdo might have just had a bad run. My NES one was fine but I know others with bad diagonals on NES but not SNES versions.

Speaking of 8Bitdo and Analogue stuff: Is the N30 dropping inputs randomly a known thing? Is there a fix?
If your 8bitdo firmware is up-to-date, check the distance between your router and the bluetooth devices - 2.4ghz can interfere with bluetooth and vice-versa. Bluetooth has frequency hopping and error correction to deal with it, but it goes awry sometimes.

Quick google hunt got me this guide which seems pretty decent.
