Thanks to the NPD Group and Venturebeat for the breakdown.

Here are the numbers for January 2018:
  • Total: $1.096 billion (up 59 percent from $690 million in January 2017)
  • Hardware: $278 million (up 119 percent from $127 million)
  • PC and console software: $517 million (up 51 percent from $343 million)
  • Accessories: $301 million (up 37 percent from $220 million)
Software

Dollar sales of Console, Portable and PC Games Software combined to reach $517 million in January 2018, up 51 percent versus a year ago. January dollar sales of software reached the highest total since the $549 million generated in January 2011.

Monster Hunter: World was the month's top-selling title overall, while also leading on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms. Sales of Monster Hunter: World represent an all-time launch month high for the Monster Hunter franchise in the U.S.

Dragon Ball: Fighterz was the second best-selling game of January. Launch month sales of Dragon Ball: Fighterz were the highest for a Dragon Ball franchise release since Dragon Ball Z: Budokai, which released in December 2002. Dragon Ball: Xenoverse also made the January all platforms best-sellers chart, ranking at #16.

Software sales on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC all achieved significant growth of over 40 percent in January when compared to a year ago. Capcom was January's leading publisher in software dollar sales.

Hardware

January hardware dollar sales of $278 million is the highest level achieved since the $323 million sold in January 2011. Over one million units of hardware sold in January 2018, also the highest tally since January 2011.

PlayStation 4, Switch and Xbox One all performed well in the month of January. The Nintendo Switch sold the most systems, but Sony's PlayStation 4 generated the most revenue. In dollar sales, the gap between the top-selling platform and the third best-selling was only 3 percent.

January 2018 Nintendo 3DS hardware dollar sales are the best recorded for a January month since 2014, while unit sales were the highest since January 2013.

Two Japanese games at the top of the chart.

What a time to be alive :D

Incidentally, Monster Hunter World beat PUBG on Xbox One, which means that it sold very, very well on Microsoft's console as well, and not just on PS4.

Switch was #1 even with MHW hype? Nice!
Good to see Skyrim and Doom charting, Bethesda must be happy

Glad that Monster Hunter has finally conquered the west. Will pick up on a sale because Capcom games always go down in price and DB Fighterz takes too much of my time.

I expected MHW to be #1 on PS4, but seeing it #1 on XBO as well is a pleasant surprise.

That's damn good for Capcom, Nintendo, Sony, and Arc Systems/Bandai Namco. Ridiculously strong showings for Monster Hunter and DBFZ (possible that DBZ might break into the territory only MK/Injustice got to for fighting games).

Dissidia being outsold by Xenoverse 1 is pretty dire though.

Dragon Ball: Fighterz
I applaud the decision to capitalize "Fighterz" this way. Deliciously cheeky.

edit: serious question-

Software sales on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC all achieved significant growth of over 40 percent in January when compared to a year ago. Capcom was January's leading publisher in software dollar sales.

Does all = each, as in each platform saw growth of 40% or more? Or is it just saying that, when combined, software sales on these platforms were up 40%?

Wow all Nintendo in that chart switch chart besides the two Bethesda games. That bodes well.
Good month for all 3!

To be fair, there aren't a ton of Switch games at retail.

The talk here sounds like Monster Hunter World was a huge hit even on Xbox One. Glad to see the series doing well everywhere.

Need more info on MHW, how much more did it sell compared to the second best entry? I assume is quite big.

2x more?

Strong for Monster Hunter and Dragon Ball. Is it really Xenoverse 1 on the charts? That would be a surprising rise. Nice to see Skyrim and Doom still charting on Switch. Odyssey, Zelda, and Mario Kart lumped together in one block will never not be amusing.

No one knew MHW was going to be a hit. There was no hype. That Switch is #1 doesn't have to be a surprise to you.

It's crazy all the statements people make just to squeeze in a line about Switch.

Only 3% gap in hardware revenue between PS4 and Xbox One with Switch sat in the middle. That's crazy stuff.

Edit: Fixed

Nintendo being the best selling hardware in January despite the one-two knock out combo of MonHun World and DBZF is pretty nuts to me. Seems clear to me that Switch is here to stay and ain't slowing down momentum anytime soon. Also great to see the MonHun gamble pay off and have Capcom back in form, and for ArcSys' talents to finally be recognized.

Good job Nintendo. Capcom gamble of Monster Hunter paid off. Still want XX switch out West someday in English. Man, Switch is poised to be the next Wii.

How come Zelda is above Mario over last 12 months? Thar would mean lots of Mario sales have been digital compared with Zelda.

Breath of the Wild just refuses to leave the top 10 and I'm honestly just so proud of it :'-)

(GTA V, too, but that's a given at this point).

TBH, I doubt either of those titles are the kind that sell systems in the west. I don't think we'll see anything like that for either system until RDR2.

Great results all the same, though!

Wow. Skyrim still in switch top 10 and Doom back in top 10. Both full price still and Doom should get a boost in February due to patch.

Not bad at all...

Wow what is up with the sudden aggresiveness?
There was no hype? Don't be ridiculous, it had immense amounts of hype, especially in January, its launch month.

Yeah, Switch must've done really well in unit sales if the revenue gap was that small, given that the Pro and X are $100+ more than it.

Great start to the year for the industry, Nintendo and Japanese development. Really good MH did well on xbox too despite the heavy marketing bias.

Let's not get too crazy here. There was definitely hype for MHW.
