I love how since this game has been played by almost every owner of an Xbox, pretty much all the achievements are considered rare with the exception of maybe the jago related ones

KI is probably my favorite fighter of this gen, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys fighting games on any level.
It may look intimidating at first, but once you learn the very basics of how to combo break, it's a great casual game with friends, especially with the combo assist function. The very first time I played it was at an Xbox launch event, I had no idea what I was doing, but was having a blast.
There's no reason not to try it, since it's free to play, and has one of the most friendly models in that regard as well.
If you love monsters and metal you especially should check it out

Sadly, this thread reminded me I haven't played in a month and lost my Killer rank. I need to fire it up again and climb back up.

I really miss having new characters launch, the constant stream of new characters to try out and learn always kept me coming back since the day it released.

God I love this game though. I cant believe a KI game is one of my favourite fighting games of all time.

I bought an X1X this week and KI looks AMAZING. I really need to get back into it; I haven't played it much over the last 3 years.

The contrast of seeing the loading screens from the original release and then the updated visuals on the X1X is crazy to me. LOL

It is incredible how good this game looks and how good it plays. I thought it was another "the same autocombo with each character to win"... but nooooo!!!! Each character plays different. The season 1 chars are a little bit similar... but those of season 3... each one could play on a different game. And I like to learn new combos and techniques. Oh, and I love the training mode and the moveset list. The training mode lets you try almost each situation in the game. And the moveset tells you how to properly use each move and what advantages gain the shadow version. It was the surprise game for me on 2017. (I bought the steam version)

Edit : I put year 1997 instead of 2017.

A lot of love went into making that Command List super legit even with its somewhat strict character limits. I'm super happy with what we did :D

I don't have a controller so I will have to hold up for a time but once I get one I'm playing this.

Also, would a Xbox 360 controller work?

You can't play this with keyboard right?

I'm playing it exclusively on keyboard and doing fairly well, finished Shadow Lords mode and won some online matches. I can't finish second half of dojo lessons though, dojo 18 is killing me

RAAM is a really fun character to play, might be my favorite grappler in any fighter after HDR T. Hawk.

Just started playing KI again as I randomly got given Sabrewulf's color 10 by a Reddit user just now. I love Killer Instinct so much. In a generation full of incredible fighting games (Tekken 7, Injustice 2, MKX, SFV, DBZ, Guilty Gear etc etc), KI holds its own so much.

other than 4k I think the assets are the same. it does look sharp but the X patch brought back the black crush issue, at least on the menus which has yet to be fixed.

I find KI is my favourite fighter of this gen and one of my all time favourites and yet I do far better online in SFV. No idea how that works.

Hey guys, I've been thinking about picking this up on the PC for a while now. I was going to pull the trigger during a recent Steam sale till I learned that it doesn't support crossplay for ranked with the Xbox/Windows versions. I mean, doubt I'll be playing it ranked much to begin with, but I do prefer owning fighting games on systems that don't have super long queues when I do get an urge to jump on for a match or two. That + the player count on Steam charts (14 right now...) prevented me from making the purchase. Should I just look into picking up the Windows store version instead?

Windows Store version has the larger player base if multiplayer interest you. Cross play helps boost the numbers. Unfortunate the steam release took so long or I'm sure it would have performed bette.

KI is literally the only reason I have an xbox one. Only other thing I have on the system that wasnt free is Cuphead.

KI is just that good though. Stylish, exciting, and deep.

That's what I figured. Too bad I've never seen it on sale, while the Steam version goes for $20 very often.

Reinstalled the game after spotting this thread. It's just as fun now as it was back in Season 2! My only complaint is that the loading times feel like they've gotten worse on the standard Xbox.

Yeah the load times are just too long, I'm playing on One X and although quicker, they still aren't as fast as I expected with the upgrade.

That said the visuals of this game running at native 4K on One X are phenominal. They seemed to have fixed the few frame drops that would occur during shadow moves, there must have been a hot fix for that recently. It's a shame probably only a very limited number of people are gonna experience this game in 4K cause it really benefits from it.

The game just got an update today, but I can't find any details on what it changed/fixed.

https://www.ultra-combo.com/3-9-9-patch-notes/

Xbox One X:
  • Xbox One X 4K performance optimization.
Steam:
  • Fixed crash bug in Shadow Lab Challenge Leaderboards and when searching for Shadows to fight in Shadow Survival & Shadow Lords.
  • Fixed Shadow Lab Leaderboards so they display the stats for Shadows win/losses correctly.
All Platforms:
  • Fixed Hisako bug that allowed her to perform an Ultra on Block or Whiff when opponent was in HP Danger Zone.
  • Shadow Lords Limited Time promotional packs (Crimson Guardian and other Rare Guardians) unified on all platforms to be offered the 1stand 3rd week of every month

It's pretty cool that they're still updating the game and fixing bugs. I somehow got the impression that the devs have moved on.

LMAO, i was playing ranking and encountered some guy who was spamming heavy attacks with Tusk, so after loosing with my main (Sadira) and range holder (Killgore) i beat his ass with Kim Wu by pinning him in the arena corner with endless heavy combo. Now i just need to figure out what character is good against Shadow Jago, because recently i was fighting against 2 dudes with killer status and easily controlled my every move.

Combo Breaker is easily the best tournament I have had the pleasure of attending. If you have a chance to go I highly suggest making the time.

It's definitely my favorite tournament of the year to watch via stream, so I can only imagine how cool it would be to attend. The best parts of Combo Breaker are:

1. All the Killer Instinct love
2. The diverse lineup of games

oh Wow what an amazing game. I've always loved fighting games, but now that I'm older I'm a bit put off by how hard it is to get into them. Playing SF2 or Tekken 3 as a kid was different because I really had no idea what actual high level play looked like. No online lobbies, no streams of Tournament clips online. I just loaded up to fight buddies at home.

Now it's like...I am aware I'm an absolute garbage can when I play SF4 or something. But KI looked so beautiful and cool I decided to buy it anyways just because I got an Xbox a week ago and am giving exclusives a shot.

Wow!!! I know I'd get demolished online but giving my brother a controller we both felt badass. The combo system makes you feel like you are actually playing well, even if deep down you know you're not lol. It lets you combine the absolute basics of fighting game knowledge with some button mashing for a satisfying visual spectacle.

Props to the team behind this. When I have a friend over for a beer or something and I feel like asking if he's up for a little video game session, this will definitely be my go-to. I'm confident even dudes who play nothing but FIFA, or nothing at all even, would have fun in this game.

This is old, but I just saw this on the KI forum from Adam Isgreen about why there were never full alternate costumes in KI:
The way assets are stored and loaded in the engine is the reason we've never been able to easily release costumes. This was a fundamental issue that we didn't have time to address when first getting the game up and running in 2013, and we've been working around it ever since. This is also why models load slowly in character select - IG are wizards in that they managed to improve it, but they're working against a system that wasn't built around the idea of modular character components.

To fix it would require a complete rebuild of the art asset pipeline and asset packaging for the entire game, which is non-trivial work. Believe me when I say that if it was easy to fix, we would have fixed it long, long ago.

You can be sure if/when there's ever a new KI, we'll certainly address this issue. It's been frustrating for us as well.

I really hope there is a new KI, as it just seemed like a miracle it even happened, and lot of the things they learned could be put to good use to future proof it more.

I'd love an announcement of something KI related at E3. Iron Galaxy and MS both did good by the franchise.

Hmm not sure I would be excited about that. IG did like 50% well and 50% weird/questionable things. The quality was just either there or not there with each character, like every other character got made by the b-team or something.
Also Mick needs to be back or this won't be the same again. S3 music was just sub-par.

Does the digital version of the Definitive Edition come with every piece of DLC?
I remember hearing about a Gold Gargos skin being exclusive to the physical edition, but is that still the case?

There was a 370mb patch for KI that I got today..no idea what it does..?

Probably just some bug fixes but I feel like the graphics in 4K look a lot cleaner but that could be my imagination.

Bought the Ultimate Edition now for 10 bucks.

How many downloads and addons do you have installed when everything is downloaded? I don't want to miss anything cause it added 50 downloads and that's quite much. :D

I don't know if anyone has experienced this, but when I launch the game (Windows Shop version) and I try to buy one of the last 3 characters, I'm told "I already own this content", when of course I don't, lol.

I'm on xbox. I don't think I can crossplay with steam users sadly
https://www.ultra-combo.com/ki-steam-qa/

Q: How can I play with my friends on Xbox/Windows?

A: Cross-Network play is limited to Exhibition, Lobby mode, and Shadow Lords MP, however, you cannot invite friends to compete in Exhibition if they are not on the same platform. The easiest workaround for this is to create a lobby, name it with specific parameters, and have players search for that lobby.

KI2 next year then... right?
Right?
Honestly I hope not, last thing I want (and I'm sure you'd agree) is an all new KI handicapped by this current gen..we know they won't make it ground up exclusive to Xbox One X to take advantage of the extra power either so screw it.

I'm assuming Xbox 'Two' isn't coming till Fall 2020 so the earliest I could see them teasing a KI2 is at E3 2019.

But with Phil saying they don't wanna announce games too early we probably won't even hear about a KI sequel till 2020..which is fine by me. I'd much rather wait a bit longer if it means a AAA budget polished next gen KI.

Same here. Now comes the hard part of sifting through all the changes that have occurred since I played this game on launch.

I do appreciate the OP's "Plays Like:" part, that's a big help. There's still so much to learn, though.
