At 30, I'm afraid that I am developing some worrying Metalcore proclivities. I've been binging on The Dillinger Escape Plan since last august and on a whim I picked up Ascendancy by Trivium. For some reason its pressing all of my buttons and its getting to the point where more atmospheric and mid-paced music is boring.

I need a crash course on black and doom metal. I'm not prepared for war metal yet. Khremmis is the only doom metal band that I've enjoyed so far.

Warning are always a good place to start with doom, I think anyway!

I'm 30 as well and hey, we enjoy whatever it is we enjoy. I barely even check out new releases these days, for better or worse.

On another note, Drowned's demo from 2006 was so good. The album was alright but more like this would be welcomed.

People are making that stuff to troll. I don't care for "far right ANTI-SJW" whatever nonsense those guys are spewing but the Antifa stuff is obnoxious when their targets are nothing more than non-threatening edgelords

There's plenty of problematic bullshit in extreme music but it's hard to take anything at face value when so much of it is about killing people/being evil
Yeah, couldn't agree more. I hope the Antifas stay the fuck away from the D666/Watain show tonight.

In terms of metalcore albums you could do hell of a lot worst than Ascendancy in fairness.

Doom has been having a good run so far this year, I would recommend the new album from Hamferð called "Támsins likam".

Or the debut album from Ocean of Grief "Nightfall's Lament"

Gah, I find two really good jazz metal bands, Blotted Science and Exivious, and they're not making music anymore.

Sooooooooooooooo Deströyer 666 just fucking deströyed tonight. Way too short of a setlist (45m, really? :( could have used twice that tbh), but holy fuck was it good.

I Am the War God is up there among all the greatest, timeless classics of epic heavy fucking metal, IMO. You know the type, those songs that start out slow and ominous and build up and up to this intense and epic frenzy of awesomeness, but without ever dragging on too long or overstaying their welcome. The Hallowed Be Thy Name, At the Heart of Winter, Night's Blood, The Oath, Victim of Changes, A Sorcerer's Pledge of this world... those kinds of songs. Soooo good, and the live experience is just incredible. The ticket price was worth it for that part alone.

Oh, Watain was all right, too, I guess. >.>

Their EP was also out today, pretty good one. They have been killing lately.

Yeah it was for sale but I haven't heard it so I didn't buy it. >.> I'll probably get a digital version at some point.

Oh yeah not a peep from Antifas too, fortunately.

I remember these guys lol. It's been a while, but yes the demo was one of my favorite things in death metal late in the '00s. I had a similar feeling about the LP.

Song of the Day

Interesting cover from Saxon.

Love Saxon a bunch but it is always strange hearing the transition from hardened band of the streets making rocking nwobhm to generic sound hair metal stipped of their edge. Even Suzie Hold On some balls to it

This song rocks though, the melody is beyond infectious from biff, did a great cover.

Song of the Day

To the surprise of no one, my pick for today will be Unchain the Wolves from Destroyer 666. In case you haven't been following my recent adventures, I bought their entire discography in order to really do a deep dive on a band I know for being a blackened thrash outfit which I love thrash or thrashy kinds of music. It's what I connect most with. What took me by surprise was just how much of a black metal album Unchain the Wolves is and the title track reflects that beautifully. I haven't really dug into their discography enough to really know the albums between this one and Wildfire, but I've heard enough to know that they evolve from more black metal to more thrash metal as their albums go.

A bit of a bonus. They also released their new EP so I'm including the first track of it which gives me some heavy Priest or Maiden vibes. See what you think.

So after the long wait has anyone checked out the new Dimmu Borgir song?

I've seen a lot of moaning but I like it.

Dimmu Borgir went really all in with the symphonic elements on this one. At points, it could almost pass for a Nightwish or Epica track. That shouldn't be too surprising, I guess. I read they intended to really push the elements of their music. The tracks that were epic, would be more epic than ever while the brutal parts would be more aggressive. This track seems to bear that out a bit. I guess the more brutal and black metal parts are elsewhere on the album. After a couple of listens, I like it enough. The chorus is catchy and the guitar solo is very nice. It's just more commercial and different than I expected.

New Nocturnal Graves!

And.....it's slow?

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I'm sure it's the standout track like this but really not what I'm looking for from them. Maybe in the context of the album I'll dig it

I have probably put less time into this Aussie horde than any other that could be considered relevant today, but I don't mind this track at all except for the fact that the production is pretty non-lethal.

I don't think it's bad but it's not at all what I want from them

Satan's Cross is still my favorite from that. Ripping production on that one

This just feels.....safe. Even the hyper blast part near the end feels sterile as fuck

honestly "safe" is a word that I, for no real good reason, always associate with Season of Mist lol. Perhaps things would be different if they were with Hells Headbangers or NWN again.

Makes sense, even if it isn't "selling out" it's still going to the big leagues of death/black metal

I guess one benefit is SOM can get them on tours in the US (worked for Revenge). Was fortunate to catch them at MDF two years ago, they ruled

Revenge's SOM release was also way more raw and unpolished than their previous so I guess there are exceptions

Nocturnal Graves are always great live but their recordings haven't hit me hard for a while to be honest. Similar with Denouncement Pyre. Always love seeing them live, don't really listen to their records often.

I'm still hanging for a new Cruciform record.

I got questioned and kinda yelled at by a grocer today because I was wearing a Possessed shirt. Was kinda weird.

So I was looking at Batushka's upcoming tour dates and saw they also plan to play with a band called Entropia from Poland for some of them which I haven't heard of before, so I looked them up and I like what I have heard so far a lot.

I would psychic murder for a new Ignivomous record. Also that's pretty funny lol. The only remarks I've ever gotten were that my Satanic Warmaster hoodie was SO COOL. I don't have any merch a normal person would bat an eye at but I have wanted a Disgorge - She Lay Gutted hood for a while now.

Burial (MA) - Pale Shade of Humanity

I'm linking the whole album, just because the song is the opener and frankly it's a killer album that needs to be recognized. When I was first getting acclimated into more brutal sounds, two albums were in my rotation a lot. One of them was Dehumanized - Prophecies Foretold, which most of you BDM guys have probably heard of, and then there was this Burial CD. I only even know about this because I was looking around for more releases by Lost Disciple which put out a few Averse Sefira CDs, and happened by it as a curiosity. This album is really just a good, solid, old school brutal death metal record. The specific brand of which I feel is difficult to really find. It combines a lot of the typical east coast low end domination with the kinda thrashy OSDM style that was incorporated into early-middle Deeds of Flesh. I love this kind of death metal.

It's boring, which music with that level of theatrics should never be. The riffs are crap that someone with no experience writing good metal riffs would come up with and think were heavy and awesome. They either have no clue anymore or they don't care. Maybe that's been the case for a long time, it's been over a decade since I've listened to them.

This Agatus album is some pretty damn good heavy metal. I couldn't find a full album link on Youtube, so just put the title track of the album here which is pretty representative of the whole.

I'm not familiar with their older work, but I enjoyed this well enough. It's very clean for black metal, and in some ways a little less interesting than I"d have liked, but still fun. I'll wind up giving the album a listen when it's out.

Don't often see a guy on keyboard in black metal!

I would recommend checking out their album "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant", it's before they went all in on the symphonic side but it has some excellent keyboard throughout.

Nagelfar - Srontgorrth (Das dritte Kapitel)

Speaking of keyboards in black metal... Nagelfar do it quite well. Classic melodic black metal. The drummer went on to form The Ruins of Beverast which are another absolutely incredible band.
