I'm reminded playing this that the sound mix on Switch is horrrrrible. It sounds so bad compared to the other versions. Super compressed with a bad mix.

Making progress on the video, though.

This game looks much better in both modes now, pretty noticable. Gyro controls are amazing.
This patch basically changed the game and made it so GOOD. Best patch of the year for sure.
I'm expecting the same treatment for Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
Switch is a great invention.

So maybe I wasn't imagining it, I thought the sound mix sounded flat compared to the PS4 and PC versions that I had played.

I've just finished the Argent Tower level and do think Doom on Switch is the best playing version now, I personally even prefer the gyro controls over mouse & keyboard.

Man, I don't think I can agree there. The gyro is neat but it hasn't added much to my experience.

Playing the PC version at 3840x1600 at frame-rates above 60fps with a great mouse feels a million times better.

Not that it's fair to compare, obviously, so I'm not doing that in the video. :D

I also greatly enjoyed my playthrough on my AlienWare PC at upwards of 200 fps with a gaming mouse, but the lack of analog movement with the keyboard and asymmetric controls don't feel as good to me personally even though it's a bit more precise in most cases.

The cost of fitting a +80GB game in a 16GB card :(

You finally got a high refresh rate monitor!?

Which is funny because the sound mixing on the console and PC versions aren't even good in the first place.

Well, it supports 75hz with ultra low motion blur. Looks fantastic in motion, though. It's the 38" LG ultra-wide - they just don't make G-Sync monitors at the size and resolution I was looking for.

I'd agree that mouse and keyboard are superior to gyro, but as of right now, the convenience of sitting on the couch with split joy cons, and the accuracy and responsiveness of gyro aiming can't be beat.

Mouse and keyboard>gyro>>>>>analogue sticks.

Great news!

Tried watching hd videoes @60fps of the patched version, but it is really hard to determine how the framerate actually holds up with all the motion blur etc
I figure motion controls with sub 30fps and framepacing issues cant really work that well?

I mean, the PC version has had Gyro support in DOOM via Steam Controller API since launch. Switch is probably the most convenient version, but I played DOOM on my PC to my TV with the SC (albeit trackpad only, it works so well) and had a blast. DS4 works through it, as well.

Really wish there was a small deadzone with the motion controls before the camera turned, ala Metroid Prime 3 advanced controls. Still move the reticle / aim dot, but just not the camera for the little deadzone. I like have the motion control sensitivity turned up to about 75-80, but good lord when playing with split joycons my view is constantly micro twitching. It's not as bad if I join them or use the pro controller, but I prefer split joycon. Also, the massive reduction in aiming speed when aiming down sights reeeeeaaallly gets me.

But gawddamned do the immediacy and the speed of the motion control really help to make you forget this is running at 30 fps. It just feels so damned good.

Well, there's absolutely no denying the undocked resolution in increased in the distance. You can actually make out the details much, much better in the first and third comparisons in the distance. Final (third) screen most obvious, and I could see how that much blurring could look bad on a high dpi device, even with a small screen. The after image looks great now in the third comparison.

Lots and lots of the reactions of people having tried the gyro controls in this thread say otherwise.

Yeah the glory kills I think are missing sounds too. They just sound so quiet.

Also are you testing the game unpatched? Like on cart? Because I'm telling you the game ran buttery smooth then but was an even lower resolution. Plus it had FOV settings.

Test them all!

Playing with a mouse or gyro is just "different."
I love Gyro aiming but don't like mouse gaming at all.
Different tastes...
I don't see the relation with resolution though. Seems random.
Exceptif it's always a main criteria meaning you automatically remove any future/present Switch version of any game from the arugably "best version" spot.

There are some universal truths and one is that mouse gaming is simply superior. Gyro aiming isn't even close. I don't understand how you can't like "mouse gaming".

This is absurd.

People have preferences, how absurd!

I'm not huge into "mouse gaming" either. I recognize it can be more speedy and potentially more accurate, but I still have a general disconnect using it. I've been PC gaming since the early 90's and love it, but I still find it much harder to lose myself and get immersed if I'm sitting behind a mouse and a keyboard compared to on my couch with a controller.

Unless that was /s - in which case ignore me.

while I recognize the superiority of mouse gaming I don't like it either. personal preference. I prefer to play video games with a standard controller. m/kb never felt right to me even when I only gamed on PC back in the day.

that's why gyro aiming is so crucial for me, it allows the standard controller to have an aiming solution that isn't garbage

well then that's more the old desk vs couch issue, not really a mouse vs controller-gyro thing

I do agree that for precision mouse-aiming is objectively superior, but the problem is you need to use a keyboard for movement when you use a mouse for aiming, and some people vastly prefer analog stick movement to WASD movement.

One day someone will come up with a mouse/controller hybrid (that doesn't resort to using trackpads) that everyone will hail as the new standard.

Lol...

Try "feelings".
Sure, when you play, a mouse and gyro are EXACTLY the same.

Nothing absurd in what I said.
Sorry gor being sarcastic but I find it hard ro believe that we actually have to explain something as basic as that.

Hahahaha.
"Simply superior" is a subjective statement because it depends on what you're comparing.

Is it more precise as a pointer? Sure.
Is it more comfortable? Completely subjective. In fact maybe it even has worse ergonomics.
Is it more practical? You need a surface, so probably not.
Also, unless you have a fancy gaming mouse, most inputs are moved to a keyboard, which while functional is not really optimized for most types of games.

Also, "not even close" needs some more detail. Unlike a thumbstick where you specify speed and direction as input, a gyro works essentially like a mouse in 3d where tilt is position. The limitations are of course that it's somewhat less precise since you're not resting on a surface and the technology might have drift and resetting not as easy as lifting the mouse.

The debate around mouse precision is so eternal, in the future after an extinction level event our last descendants will etch illustrations of the slavery that followed 'The Last Great Input War' into a crumbled wall - a crude drawing of a man whipping another with a mouse and the other on his knees with his hands tied to a controller. Aliens will study this last vital piece of history, it will be our legacy.

Excited to see how this update really fared. I noticed the low framerate would affect game speed and after the patch I saw some argent tower finale gameplay that wasn't in slow motion, the main tell being the reload animation. At the very least it's where it should have been initially, the closer to 720p30 the better.

I also noticed frame rates to be much smoother in hand held mode than in docked mode. Although I game mostly in hand held mode, I feel that it's gotten to the point where docked mode has now become the "lesser" version. Which is unfortunate.

Try playing the PC version with a Steam Controller or Dualshock 4? Those have gyro too and people similarly swear by those.

I played it that way Steam Link + Steam Controller + Gyro, pretty good. One thing I like about the Steam Controller over most console implementations is I can make it only activate on a button press. Usually I have gyro off until I do a full pull on the left trigger then it activates - works particularly well for games that use "look down sights" for that button.
