I can't stand how yellow it is even iPad Pro. If X is even more yellow than that...lol, screw that crap. I don't understand why Apple just don't let people adjust neutral color temperature manually, and the maybe make True Tone work off of that initial setting. They should realize this is an individual preference for people, much like the amount of brightness.

I mean, it's called TrueTone, so what you're asking for goes against the idea of the feature, which is accurate color reproduction regardless of ambient lighting conditions. When Tom's Hardware tested the display, they found it improved color accuracy:
Further testing also indicated that True Tone actually improves color accuracy. With the feature off, our iPhone X recorded a Delta-E score of 0.28. (Numbers closer to 0 are better.) With the True Tone on, that was improved to 0.21.

You can of course turn it off if you want, but Apple undermining the feature to accomodate what you think you perceive as the right color is not going to happen.

If you don't like how warm the True Tone sensor makes things look, you can just turn it off. Then the screen cools right down. It may as well be a warm/cool display toggle.

The True Tone discussion reminds me of audiophiles and vinyl records. Modern digital recording is far more accurate and true, but old vinyl records and the electronics used to play them added pleasant distortion that many people really like. So you can dislike True Tone (or modern digital audio), but it's not because they're quantifiably less accurate. It's just you like the particular ways the alternatives are less accurate. Which is fine too.

How long do I have to return this phone? If I ordered online, can I just return it to an Apple Store?

There's nothing bad or really dissatisfying about the iPhone X.....it's actually pretty impressive. I'm just someone that has always bought secondhand 1-2 year old models for a discount. I'm not really sure if I'm comfortable spending $600-$700 more than I normally do for the leap forward that the X represents.

I may just return it to Apple and enjoy my 6S Plus for another year or two. I considered selling the X on eBay or something, but that seems kinda risky.

You can take it back to the Apple Store for a full refund within 14 days.

Wow, the speakers are an order of magnitude better than those of the 7! No idea about the Plus models - I'd imagine they also sound much better than the regular sized phones, but I can see myself actually listening to music on the phone's speakers now. Kind of amazed the X is putting out sound this rich given its size.

Anyone have any good youtube recommendations for 4k HDR videos that I can use to really gauge how awesome the screen is?

If you swipe up from the bottom left to right it immediately brings up the app switcher.

Wow. Horrible news. I had to exchange my iPhone X.

I thought the phone was flawless but turned out I was wrong. I didn't notice the imperfection/defect until it got dark and turned on the lights - turns out there was a long smile faced smudge on the inside of the iPhone screen. It kind of looked like this - https://f01.justanswer.com/JACUSTOMER9x83yrp5/2011-01-10_231744_img_3037.jpg

I took it in and the Apple staff were speechless - they couldn't believe it. I had 4 people look at it, one thought it was a scratch on the top part but the tech guy came over and confirmed it wasn't on the top of the screen. They tried cleaning it with a microfiber and of course, nothing happened.

They swapped mine for one of the two replacement units they had on hand for repairs - obviously completely brand new but it was in a different box.

Bit of a stressful day, but mad shout out to Apple for helping me, absolutely no issues, I was kind of expecting them to say I damaged it but thankfully they agreed it was a defect.

Glad you got it worked out. One of the reasons I feel so comfortable buying Apple products is that I know they will fix it, no questions, if there's an issue.

Ok so far I'm very impressed with FaceID which works so damn well and the new gestures and all, but....

I think I might hate OLED screens. The color shifting at angles really bothers me. It's not even remotely as bad as on my coworker's Pixel 2 XL which I found comically bad but I think it's driving me slightly nuts.

Going to have to give it a few days or a week and see if it's still bothering me. Mostly only happening on pages with a lot of white.

Okay, so I did some testing with Face ID when the phone is on a desk.

Apple says that Face ID's operating range is about 10-20 inches, which we found out after Nilay Patel at The Verge was having problems with detection because he apparently pulls his phone from his pocket and looks at it without lifting it up at all. I got a measuring tape because I thought surely my phone isn't 20 in. away from my head when it's on my desk. But it definitely was. And I would imagine for most people working on a computer at their desk, their phone is going to be off to the side somewhere and more than 20 in. away.

As soon as I leaned into that 20 in. range, it worked. So then I checked the angle. I got up close to the phone, but at a pretty extreme angle. It unlocked. There were limits to its range, but the problem I was having before wasn't angle, it was distance.

Now we know why they showed the swimmer in the ad. Her face was pretty close to the edge of the pool. So while this is primarily an inconvenience, it means that people who don't keep their phone close to them at their desk -- either in front of the keyboard or right by an arm -- and who want to quickly check their notifications without leaning over or picking up the phone will need to turn off the notification previews being locked behind Face ID auth.

Apple sacrificed the headphone port in the iPhone 7, so that when the X launched there would be no drama.

Also, I'm trying to read in bed with the iPhone as the only light source in the room, I'm staring right at it and it keeps dimming despite claiming it shouldn't. If I let it lock itself, it unlocks as soon as I tap the glass... so it can see that I'm looking at it, so why does it dim/lock despite claiming it won't if I'm looking at it?

I haven't updated to 11.1 yet, I guess I should now.

This feels so fucking nice. The face of thing is so darn seemless and easy to get to. It is slightly changing my habits but I'll get used to it. I wish the silver on the back was more white and shiny.

So what's people's ooptinoon on true tones? Worth it, seems like it's like small changes in night mode?

Turn off True Tone display. Might help.

I was having issues with my Face ID. But after a reset + realizing that I needed to hold my phone a littler further out, I've been able to get it to work seamlessly every time. I'm really happy.

The OLED screen is such a huge jump in quality imo (damn this forum and text looks sooo good). Plus I just can't go back after this full screen display. It's so immersive even with just browsing.

I've even gotten used to all the swipes really quickly. So ditching the home button was really easy.

I guess I must be a "warm" person, since I think True Tone looks much better then with it off. But I can totally understand if some hate it or see it as yellow. I think everyone sees a little different.

imgur is apparently still blocking us (was probably an automatic block due to the sudden spike in traffic from a new domain); hopefully the reset admins can get it worked out soon.

On another note, went to a store to compare my space grey to the silver phone and I think I've pinned down why I'm not totally into the silver:

Seems to evoke the feeling of a household appliance.

Also, the iPhone X in space grey sometimes looks like that Samsung black/blue under certain lighting conditions. Doesn't apple get that people just want a plain black phone?

Rockin' the apple silicone black case now. Hoping it doesn't break down in two months like I've been reading in all the reviews. Used to exclusively use the black leather apple case, but trying to move away from using animal products.

Anyone having this issue with their X?

when I use the bottom left/right swipe when i'm playing a podcast in pocketcasts, and i swipe to twitter and it has a video ad or something playing (muted by default) i hear a crackling sound. it's really annoying when swapping around between apps while listening to a podcast.

The sound is really brief but it's not hard to miss. You can easily reproduce it by swiping back and forth, doesn't always happen but it happens frequently.

It might impact other apps, unsure yet.

I had the black silicone on the 7 and it's held up great. Not as black anymore as the black I just put on my X, but totally looks fine and no wear issues. Best case I've had.

And I don't know, I love the X in silver and wish I felt comfortable enough with scratches to go caseless. The back is a kind of odd color, but the effect is nice and I love the stainless steel sides. Such a nice tribute to the original iPhone.

Got my phone earlier today. I actually miss the physical size of the 7+. I still hate the notch, but I gotta admit the X is a gorgeous phone.

Swiping down from the top right will take so much to get used to. I invoke control center often so its a pain in the ass having to reach the top of the phone now.

This is my biggest gripe. I used my 7 a lot with one hand, its almost impossible to do that here and especially if invoking CC.

The most frustrating part is that I need to use two hands for CC now. It was fine swiping down once in a while to check my notifications. Now, swiping down all the time is going to be a real pain, especially on the go.

Feels like such a dumb design decision. So many stupid design decisions on this phone. It feels like the "true" iPhone X is a year or two away and this was just an acceptable stopgap.

How do I know if I'm watching HDR content? Is it just inherently active if supported? Watching Glow on an updated Netflix app.

Oh boy, just opened Hearthstone on my X. Blizzard needs to optimize that ASAP. It's extra small because it's adding a black bar to the bottom of the screen for the home bar. Yikes.

Isn't the difference between faceID and touch ID that they can actually upgrade faceID over software to make it better? or am i mistaken?

You went with the apple black silicone case again? I do appreciate the microfiber lining that extends up to the band of the silicone case. It's only on the back for the leather. Loving how nice it feels too touch.

I think the scratches I won't mind as much as the replacement cost for a shattered glass back. Thinking the X will look like a used stainless steel Apple Watch in a year with normal wear and tear. Meanwhile, if I scratch space grey there's really no coming back from that damage.

Not sure how I feel about the caudabe lucid clear case. It's pretty slippery and the top lip does not raise the screen off of the table as told by a rep on Facebook. But I love the sleekness and how clear it is..

So many positive vibes from people using older iPhones to the X. What about people using other Androids?

I am using S8+ and already missing the much bigger screen. I also had an iPhone 7 Plus before the S8+ and found the 7 Plus actually has a much larger screen estate vs the X. The 5.5 vs 5.8 inch is really not quite true..

I must say Face ID is pretty fantastic so far. I find the screen better than my S8 too. I am no expert on display panels tho.

Yeah I went with black silicone again. I'm vegan so, that's my only choice. I like the softer cases much more than the hard shells, and the Apple makes the best one IMO. Last time I had the matte black 7 which looked really good with it, but with my silver X...eh. Problem is the light-colored ones just show dirt way too easily.

Laying in bed. It's a bit harder to use in bed than the plus models. So does faceid really prevent it from locking, etc? Does it do anything else?

side by side comparison between looking at resetera on my pixel 2 xl vs iphone x (from the shitty camera on my surface). Both phones roughly have the same vertical viewing display area, sure the X is a little skinnier, but damn why is the text and ui area gigantic on iphone? Can't even fit avatar and text on same line. Why isnoptimized't there a 'smaller scale mode' option like on iphone plus models?

WIN_20171103_22_18_34_Pro.jpg
Wow this is horrible. Is there another browser to test? I'm used to Dolphin and iCab. If that's how iPhone X renders forums, I'll cancel my order and get a 8+.

Nice! Thinking of maybe going Vegan this year. Recently became a vegetarian (have a bunch of vegan friends whispering in my ear).

Had a Matte black 7 plus with the apple black leather case this past year. Sort of forgot that it was matte black up until a week ago when I started shopping for cases and tried going caseless with it.

You're right about the light colored cases.

Thought about going clear, but I keep reading that clear cases turn yellow over time. I know that Apple will replace your silicone case within the first year. Never did that with the leather because I was always OK with it's wear and tear.

Guess color really doesn't matter once it's in a case.
