Believe me, I know exactly what you are talking about and Microsoft is actually working on making that possible (but not a "real xbox" just the UI) with Windows Core OS (Andromeda will be the first device running the OS). The thing is that Xbox is where they would want developers to be at with PCs...they want UWP apps/games. Yes, UWP does use Win32 APIs, but they don't want 3rd parties to keep using Win32 APIs, they want people to build UWP Apps/Games. That's their future. They don't want to go backwards where they already have mandated that all games coming to the store are UWP based. What you are asking is just like how PC gamers are asking for MS to just embrace Win32 for their future devices...that's just not where they are going. It's PWA/UWP.
I agree with you that the final goal is to get everyone developing in uwp, but kinda like they are doing with the win store the first step is to easy people in by using existing code.

Of course, I'm not talking about developers who are already making games for xbone, but developers or games that never did. For instance I don't think we will ever see LoL being ported to a console, but what if the developer can just branch of from the actual PC build, with little to no changes (like using xbox live for multiplayer) and be able to deliver that on xbox? The exact same code they already use and test, and the ability to gradually move towards a full uwp implementation that they could use to take it to even another devices such as ios and Android?

I think it would be huge, for both uwp and xbox.

I understand what you are stating but they can do that without having to support legacy code on their console. No matter if the console is running Windows 10, it still takes advantage of the hardware underneath in a way that's totally different from regular PC systems. Is it possible? Yes. Will they do it? Unlikely.

The Xbox One X internal drive is a Seagate ST1000LM035 - 5400 RPM, 128MB cache, SATA 6Gb/s. The system architecture is such that there is very little difference in load times/performance between games stored on the internal drive vs an external SSD drive. This is in contrast with the OG Xbox One and One S, where there was a very significant difference in load times between the internal drive and any external drive, SSD or otherwise With the X, some games load faster from the internal drive, and some load faster from the external SSD, but in each case, the difference is ~5% or less, in the tests I've seen.

Correct. Also, any limitation on load times has nothing to do with the physical interface (USB or internal SATA) it has to do with the system architecture. I replaced the internal HDD with a SSD and there was ZERO difference in load times.

Interestingly, the X1X development kit has a m.2 NVMe PCIe SSD that loads games at full speed. Maybe it has DMA channels to the extra 12GB of RAM? Very frustrating for those of us who would have paid the extra for this in the retail version.... I would have had no issue paying $700-$800 for this.

That's too bad, but I guess I get why they did it, probably would be a much smaller market for that. I would love to see options like this being available going forward in future generations though, as well as the option to replace the hard drive like we've been able to do with PS3/PS4.

There are some games unfortunately, though, where this can give players an unfair advantage. Star Wars Battlefront for example, if you were running on a drive that loaded maps faster, you could load into Fighter Squadron faster than practically everyone, unless one of them was also on a similar setup. You'd have a clear and significant head start to retrieve the beginning hero pick up, and basically start and play the whole match as Luke's X-wing or Vader's Tie Advanced, and just rack up kills for the entire match with little to no threat of dying. I could repeatedly do this on both my PS4 Pro installed to SSD, as well as my Xbox One S (at the time, on Scorpio now) with an external HDD.

That's because no one uses their store on PC and getting people to use it on PC. They don't have that issue on Xbox. It's either UWP app or game or nothing at all, maybe PWA in the future. Centennial apps still use Win32 and calls to the OS that Xbox doesn't support. As much as they are moving centennial apps to the store, they ultimately want UWP apps/games (and settle for PWAs).

tangent but on Windows a PWA is just another kind of UWP app. There's a weird "UWP versus PWA" narrative I've seen on Twitter and other places, but it's completely nonsensical. It's not even like Centennial apps where they use some UWP interfaces/mechanisms and not others so you can while away some happy days having a nice fruitful and productive semantic debate on whether they really count as UWP apps or not - Windows PWAs are 100% UWP apps in every way, they're really just adding a handful of features to the web tech support that's been a core aspect of WinRT and UWP since the Windows 8 days.

Bugs like that should never ship even in Alpha. There is no real need to expedite a build. The world will not end if you have to wait a few days.
I get where your are coming from - but it's moments like these where I just hope they ship it to remind everyone what they signed up for. It's called alpha wave for reasons.

I voted ship it, but it looks like the holds will win. Would be nice if they post the new features today even if they don't release a build until tomorrow or Friday.

Nice. They basically are implementing stream play...haha. That's pretty interesting. Looking forward to it. I'm glad they are improving Edge as I use it to watch anime when I don't use crunchy roll. Looks like a good update.

Still no Careers and Avatars though!

Starting at 6 p.m. PST today, members of the Xbox One Preview Update Alpha ring will begin receiving the latest Xbox One system update (1804.180227-1801). This update includes brand new features as detailed in our earlier post. Read on to learn more about fixes and known issues in the latest system update.

Fixes:
Installation
  • Fixed several issues to improve the reliability and usability of game installations, updates, and content management.
  • Fixed an issue which impacted transferring content between drives.
  • Enabling the download 4K updates checkbox will now cause 4K updates to show up in the Updates tab of My games & apps.
  • Fixed an issue where installations interrupted due to slow network conditions could fail to automatically resume.
  • Fixed an issue where a "You need to free up space" dialog was displaying too often.
  • Fixed a bug where all items in the install Queue could show as "Queued" without making progress.
Profile Color
  • Fixed an issue which sometimes caused an incorrect Profile color to be used when powering on the console.
Known Issues:
Black Screen
  • When resuming from connected standby (with the console in Instant-On mode), you may encounter a black screen on the TV or monitor. You can avoid this issue by powering on the console prior to powering on the TV or monitor.
  • Workaround 1: If stuck in this state, unplug and reinsert the HDMI cord into the back of the console, then power the TV off/on.
  • Workaround 2: Disable IR blasting in Settings to prevent this issue from reoccurring.
System Update
  • When installing a system update, you may encounter an E200 error at the last stage of the installation.
  • Workaround: Unplug and re-plug the power cord, then power on the console normally—the console should go through the standard start up sequence and land on the dashboard.
Pins
  • If Microsoft Edge was pinned prior to downloading the 1804 update, attempting to launch Microsoft Edge from the existing pin will fail.
  • Workaround: Delete the old Microsoft Edge pin and re-pin Microsoft Edge.
Dolby Atmos
  • You may notice audio drops in receivers using Dolby Atmos for Home Theater.
Netflix
  • If Netflix crashes when first launched, check for an app update on the Store or from My games & apps.
HBO Go
  • If HBO GO crashes when first launched, check for an app update on the Store or from My games & apps.
Settings
  • When accessing the Language & location page in Settings, it may take a long time for the page to load.
Store
  • When browsing Add-Ons in the Store, the Show All page may appear blank
Pi-Hole
  • Pi-hole users may encounter issues signing in, creating, or recovering accounts upon downloading the 1804 update. This is due to a new configuration file which is downloaded from a URL Pi-hole blocks by default.
  • Workaround: Add clientconfig.passport.net to the Pi-hole allowed IP address list.

So I guess I'm the only one excited like shit about the Mixer share controller as that's the basics of streaming games! Just want to try that out to test the lag. Cuz if it works...streaming games would be closer than anticipated in my eyes (4yrs was my expectation)

It's so weird seeing people hyped for avatars to return. I don't think the general gaming community is going to be the least bit excited about this. In fact I really hope Microsoft is careful here and doesn't try and shove them front and center back into the UI. There would absolutely be a backlash.

Avatars and Careers that are conjoined is all for AltSpaceVr and Mixed Reality. That's what i think. It will be a big deal for that.

What percentage of Xbox One owners are going to buy a VR headset to use with the console, and of that group of people, how many will be interested in spending time in a virtual hangout with avatars?

I'll add the notes once I get home but nothing really exciting for me. Hopefully they have more in store for the Spring update.

On mobile, I'll clean it up in the morning

HOW TO GET IT:

• If your console is in Instant-On mode and you have been selected to receive the update, it will download and install the update and reboot to standby.

• NOTE: Once the update is available to you, you can manually begin the update by launching the Guide and navigating to All Settings > System > Updates.

• If your console hasn't downloaded and installed the update by 3:00 AM PST 3/2/2018 (11:00AM GMT 2/3), you will be prompted to do so at that time.

• This update has a shorter than usual amount of time before it becomes mandatory.

DETAILS:

OS version released:rs4_release_xbox_dev_1804.180227-1801

Available: 6:00PM PST 3/1 (2:00AM GMT 2/3)

NEW FEATURES:

• Support for 1440p Video Output

Xbox One X and Xbox One S now support output at 1440p resolution for games and media; 1440p resolution, sometimes referred to as "2560x1440" and "QHD," is a popular choice for PC users. With over a million and a half more pixels than 1080p, this resolution fills the gap between Full HD and 4K displays.

• A New Level of Mixer Interactivity

Introducing a new form of Mixer interactivity: Share controller. Now Mixer streamers on Xbox One have the option of sharing their controller with a Mixer viewer who is watching through Mixer.com. Streamers can share their entire controller (except the Xbox button) in the Xbox game they are playing, and a viewer can take control through the on-screen gamepad or by plugging a controller into their PC. Viewer and streamer can work together in the game, or the viewer can cause trouble – resulting in hilarious chaos. It's your choice!

• Stat Comparisons on Home

In an upcoming Insider release, you'll also see stat comparisons with your friends across game blocks, friend blocks, and Mini Game Hubs. These stat comparisons are specific to the games that you play, so a PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds player may see comparisons of solo or squad wins, number of matches played, and opponents defeated. A Forza Motorsport 7 player may see driver level, number of cars owned and collector tier.

• The Cutting Edge

The Microsoft Edge browser on Xbox One has been updated to a new look that's modern but still feels familiar. We know how important a good web browsing experience is for you, so we've doubled down on making Microsoft Edge easy to navigate with a controller. Improvements to the Favorites and History experience make it simple for you to return to your favorite sites. We're also very excited to announce that you can now download and upload pictures, music and videos from Microsoft Edge on the console; your downloaded content can then be browsed with the File Explorer app. Other new features to note are tab muting, read aloud and autofill. We're always looking to improve the browsing experience on Xbox and look forward to your feedback.

• More Immersive Audio

If you're the type of person that loves to rock out to a music playlist while playing your favorite games, we have good news for you! You now have an option to selectively balance game audio against background music within the Guide. Turn down the game volume, crank up the music volume and rock on. But that's not all. The system sounds on Home and in the Guide have been completely revamped to support spatial audio, so the audio cues from your surround sound system will match the actions you see on-screen.

• Powerful Invite Filtering Tools for Club Owners

Club administrators can now filter invitation requests based on various criteria, including reputation, Gamerscore, and recommendations from existing club members. Are you setting up a club for hardcore PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds players? Set a filter to only show invitees with over 200 hours of playtime. Maybe you're looking for Gamerscore completionists in Forza Motorsport 7? Filter requests to only show invitees with over 900 Gamerscore. These filters will persist until the administrator changes them, so if you set or edit club filters, they'll still be there the next time you sign-in. Club invitees will also now appear in a vertical list, with details such as their Gamertag, Gamerpic, Gamerscore, a line noting if the new invitees were recommended by an existing club member, and a reputation indicator.

• Smarter Feeds

You will soon be able to sort your club feeds to show you "what's hot" and "top posts." Use the "what's hot" filter to see trending content in the club feed that's popular right now. Filtering by "top posts" will show you the most popular posts of all time in that club. You will also soon be able to disable comments on your feed posts across clubs, Game Hubs, and Community, so the only person in control of the narrative is you. Finally, we're cleaning up your feeds by hiding posts for broadcasts once they've ended.

• Open Tournaments

Tournaments are now available directly in Game Hubs, so you don't have to be a member of a club to start or join a tournament.

FIXES:

• Installation

• Fixed several issues to improve the reliability and usability of game installations, updates, and content management.

  • Fixed an issue which impacted transferring content between drives.
  • Enabling the download 4K updates checkbox will now cause 4K updates to show up in the Updates tab of My games & apps.
  • Fixed an issue where installations interrupted due to slow network conditions could fail to automatically resume.
  • Fixed an issue where a "You need to free up space" dialog was displaying too often.
  • Fixed a bug where all items in the install Queue could show as "Queued" without making progress.
• Profile Color

Fixed an issue which sometimes caused an incorrect Profile color to be used when powering on the console.

Glad Open Tournaments is finally here, should have been like this from the beginning. Hopefully we see more activity in tournaments now that the club roadblock is gone.

Anyone have a rough idea from previous updates how long it might be for this to go from Alpha ring to Beta ring? I'm fresh out of quick polls.

Lots of people like avatars. Seems like half the gamer pictures I see are avatars. (mine included). Can't wait personally, they are fun. Xbox has gotten too serious with some of their stuff, need more silliness. Makes the brand more inviting and less Extreme Halo Call of Duty Shooter Monster Energy Drink Boys Club crap.
