Hm... I am pessimistic on my outlook for VC4 in Japan. The game is an extremely polished version of the formula, and doesn't require previous games to play and understand what's going on. But Valkyria games tend to have typical sales patterns. I would guess 50k launch, 100k+ LTD when all is said and done for the PS4 version.

I have no idea what the Switch version will do. I hope I am pleasantly surprised...

I think in the West it will do better due to higher awareness of the brand overall, Sega of America / Atlus as a combined whole is way better in marketing than the past, and are bringing it overall to more platforms with a not-so-subtle hint about the upcoming PC version. But this is an MC thread and we don't receive NPD number leaks anymore, so guessing whether or not it will sell better in the West is rather meaningless.

We can't tell right now, but it's very clear that it will be the best selling Zelda since the FC games, which is pretty amazing!

I think I'll trust shipments from Nintendo from 2 decades old Famitsu data.

Media Create has this:

[N64] The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time <ADV> (Nintendo) {1998.11.21} (¥6.800) - 1.257.205

We can not have a precise idea of how Wii U shipments will looks like by the end of March 2018, all we can do is do an estimate with the 1.5 million sold Nintendo annunced.

With Switch, we can look at the trend.

Code:
+--------+-----+-------+
| Q1 2017| 2,76 | 2,76 |
| Q2 2017| 1,16 | 3,92 |
| Q3 2017| 0,78 | 4,70 |
| Q4 2017| 2,00 | 6,70 |
+--------+-----+-------+

Now, we know that Zelda BotW sold a bit over 6 million, which mean there are a bit less than 700,000 units in stock. In this quarter, i think is likely to expect Zelda Switch easy over 150K in Japan, i'd say 170K seem likely, (as it sold 110K so far, and is selling above 10K per week). Big sales comes from west tho, America alone is likely gonna be double compared to Japan, and then there is Europe and rest of world. I think that Zelda Breath of the Wild sales should be around 800,000 for this quarter, which mean it is gonna surpass the shipments by end of 2017. It depend on how many units Nintendo want in stock, but i believe 500K or so for a leggy game like Zelda (i know it seem weird to say) seem legit, so my guess is that they'll ship 600K for Breath of the Wild on Switch.

This put Zelda Breath of the wild Switch at 7.3 million lifetime. If Wii U version ship 1.7 million by the end of March 2018, then 9 million will happen. Gonna be super close tho, worst scenario i see is 8.7-8.8 million.

Close to Horizon, impressive.

One might argue otherwise and it's certainly not the only reason, but it was released at 20$ and moved a huge amount during steam sales where it's price was in the 5-15$ range
it was extremely easy(and I still think it is) to have a discount coupon of VC1 on Steam, got my copy of VC1 for only a few bucks a few years ago

I am not saying that VC4 will bomb here lol. I am just saying that for those who had the expectation for the game to do as well as VC1 PC performance must consider lots of things first.

This is the fourth series of VC which mean it will had barrier for new comers to come and try the game.

The price will be full price too this time.

And of course on PC, there is no more new franchise pull anymore. It will be all depend on VC4 quality itself.

Do people actually care about if it's the forth or tenth installment? Sounds like a last century thing. I mean sure you probably need to play Mass Effect 3 before Mass Effect 2, but VC4 has nothing to do with VC2 and 3, and very little to do with VC1. It's as good an entry point as any other entry.

The average consumer wouldn't know at a glance, so from a marketing perspective using a 4 is more of a hard sell. Especially for this genre.

I don't think the average consumers would stop buying Far Cry 5 or Battlefield 5 because they didn't play FC4 or BF4. "I need to play the previous entry before getting the latest one" is the most hardcore gamer thing.

I don't know about that. I had trouble convincing some friends of mine to give Xenoblade 2 a try because they "didn't play the first one". With popular series like FF and DQ it is well known that they stand alone but many smaller series actually do require knowledge of the previous games. Kingdom Hearts for example.

Which is funny because I played BbS, 358/2 and DDD, and neither of the mainline entries.

There are all sorts of people of course, but I believe most people don't care. Otherwise how can Persona 5 sell much better than previous games? How can Nier Automata sell well? There are a lot of franchises that didn't get big until the second, third, forth or even fifth entry.

"I didn't play the first one" is a good excuse though. I use it as a polite way of saying "I'm not interested in what you are recommending."

There's a reason why Monster Hunter moved away from numbered entries and why other series in the west are doing it as well (Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed etc.) It's just an unnecessary barrier of entry unless it's a huge franchise like GTA or Star Wars.

Wonder what's up with PS4's stock.

Sony realized that this is as good as it's gonna get so they're packing up.

Switch still same sales. Been on that consistent hovering around 40k weekly now. That's there then. No stock shortage. Just consistent. Possibly rise when something more interesting comes out.

In Mass Effect's case, Andromada is more of a spin-off (I think at least that's what EA want people to believe). It certainly doesn't reach mainline ME standard. Dragon Age Inquisition was a reboot after the terrible DA2. Monster Hunter World is also more or less a reboot so it makes sense for Capcom to cut its tie with previous games. AssCreed is kinda weird. Even before they completely ditched the number, they had released a lot of none-numbered entries that should be qualified as mainline. Honestly I don't know how they came up with those names, maybe they themselves don't know either.

We also get Uncharted 4, The Last of Us part 2, Battlefield 1 (this one's special), Star Wars Battlefront 2, Far Cry 5, Froza 7, Gears of Wars 4, Beyond Good & Evil 2, Watch Dog 2, Destiny 2, God of War 4, Titanfall 2, Dishornered 2, Wolfenstein 2. I don't think western publishers are moving away from numbers just yet.

VC4 is not a reboot, from what I played the change is rather small so I see no reason to name it differently.

Andromeda was marketed as a new start, separate from the original trilogy. What they do now with it post-release is up in the stars.

Numbered sequels aren't gonna go away from one day to the other but I think it's no coincidence that many of these games saw a decline in sales with their second entry. It doesn't matter anyway because with GaaS you'll only get "first entries" that get multiple season passes :p

Because VC is not the same level as Persona.

Persona is on its peak of popularity when 5 is released.

Nier had the backing of great WoM. And the cult status of the game is helping a lot too.(not to mention the title dont have that giant 2 lol.)

For the record, Valkyria Chronicles 4 has no PC version announced.

Well.....congratz Sega. U F up.

They likely could've called it VC Retailiation or something but the spin off being so bad likely required a numbered entry to tell people "this is a mainline game, please buy it"

Sure it's not, that's why VC4 in needs that number in its title to show fans that this is not the same shit as Azure Revolution. This is the real mainline deal. And speaking of WoM. Now this is the deciding factor. If VC4 is as good as VC1 or even better, people will take notice. If it's a bad game, title change won't save it. I always believe the quality of the game and the platforms are the two most important factors. The game is already announced for all platforms except PC (but the SEGA PR guy on this forum heavily hinted it), so everything comes down to quality.

Also, VC4 is EXTREMELY similar to VC1 both visually and system-wise. There is no "we start anew" element in the game, which is usually required when changing the naming convention. Even if Sega want to call it something else, they'd find it hard to come up with an excuse.

Andromeda was marketed as a new start, separate from the original trilogy. What they do now with it post-release is up in the stars.

Didn't know GoW4 doesn't actually have the number. Makes sense though considering all the changes from gameplay to setting. Andramada, as you said, is "a new start".

VC4 is not a new start of any sort. In fact people are calling it VC1.5.

We... do not disagree there, I said as much a few times in past threads and just in the previous page.

Well.....congratz Sega. U F up.

I'm not sure about that, PC version will come and they're most likely delaying it on purpose.
The problem is had it been a simultaneous release price parity would have hurt it and it would've got less coverage.
I think they're going with a delayed release (somewhere between a few months to 1 year) to be able to have a more attractive price point (20-40$) some sort of DLC included and lots of fancy graphics setting options
This way they should attract double dippers and PC only enthusiasts and start the PC sales with a strong momentum without hurting their console SKU too much as well

Still hope we are getting news soon on Fire Emblem. Really curious about it.
More than anything, ive been really antsy about fire emblem, I jus really nees to see what it looks like. I'm not worrying about it or anything in terms of quality, but rather it feels so close and we dont even have anything as much as a screenshot of it. And worse yet, I fear Nintendo is saving it for E3 which is forever away

Famitsu about that:

" The PlayStation 4 has been affected by shortage"
https://www.famitsu.com/biz/ranking/

We'd have gotten info on such from MC had it actually been impacting beyond a mention in Famitsu, which isn't even quantified in their report. We've had anecdotes of both short and ample stock, so its obviously not anything consistently spread regardless.

More likely, Sony's just slow to restock and we're seeing shelf stock getting eaten up due to the surge from World. Hence why Notaskwid has said the same thing for about three weeks now while regions that others have reported on haven't had issues at all, just more backroom stock.

I think DQH I&II had an initial shipment of around 50K.

Famitsu:
[NSW] Dragon Quest Heroes I & II for Nintendo Switch <Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below \ Dragon Quest Heroes II> <RPG> (Square Enix) {2017.03.03} (¥8.800) - 25.929 / NEW <40-60%>

Personally I expect they shipped around 100K for DQB, since it's a far less expensive game and SE already know the type of legs they can expect if it's well received.

In terms of Doom I think the initial shipment for the game is less than 25K

A slow-ish return to the usual PS4 baseline, as expected. Still, overall on the software front MHW more than payed off (they should go beyong 2M just on physical copies alone, which is well beyond what I expected for it) and I guess on the hardware front it also gave it a decent boost pre-during-post launch (though nothing super massive). All in all, Sony and Capcom are likely very happy with the current results in Japan.

Switch feels a horse, ready to take off for the sprint of it's life, being held back by some sort of gate (aka shortages). Considering how "flat" it's sales have been, despite shortages, it really feels like the moment Nintendo can provide more units consistently it'll do insane numbers. Not sure if Wii, DS or 3DS level/type of numbers, but insane ones for sure.

As for the software side of things, some decent variety in there, though the new games (the PS4 ones in the top 10) also seemed to have relatively low debuts. Unlike the Switch, the software sales for PS4 games in general seem to be it's biggest issue in Japan (outside of a few exceptions).

Shame that Bayonetta can't seem to get more love (in Japan or anywhere else really). Such a great series. Here is hoping the 3rd game does better (unlikely, but not impossible I guess)!
