Sad to see Mclaren in such a state, I don't really have a favourite team in F1, but in all my years of following F1 I have always supported at least 1 of their drivers. Let's hope for their sake things start to improve.

Fucking lol at this Wax redeemed nonsense.

He's been spouting wrong information in this thread for years, don't encourage him for more.

For some reason I have this sinking feeling that the Mercs will return to their dominant ways this season and Hammy will cruise to that fifth title.

Vettel will drive instead of Kimi today. Finn is not feeling well.

This will be quite a grueling one for Vettel, he made 170+ laps yesterday and he will be back in the car today.

Everyone's feeling unwell this week it seems!

Anyway, the McLaren lives!

I don't think anyone else has played with the hyper soft tyres but it's fascinating that they're lasting for 5 flying laps + cooldowns.

Other teams, notably Haas have been complaining that the soft tyres (not even super or ultra) are graining during their flying laps yet Alonso just banged out at least 5 flying laps in one stint at 1:21 or quicker with no signs of issues?

Like aside, has McLaren made a good car here once they figure out how to stop things exploding?

Expect a break down in 10 minutes.

So to recap:

A McLaren just managed a 10+ lap run on the hypersoft tyres, set the fastest time of the day and managed consistent lap times after the initial few laps of fast laps and cooldowns.

Obviously looooong way to go but finally, finally a bit of light at the end of the tunnel?

Hamilton sets a low 1:19 on unknown tyres (unmarked as Perilli sometimes does this for their own testing) and Ricciardo has a decent run in the high 1:19s on medium tyres.

It's hotting up!

Ocon just went fastest...

Also, interesting to hear that two of the McLaren failures were caused by the same issue (Battery failure) that caused Red Bull's issue.

About that unmarked rubber, taken from Motorsport live coverage
Here's some information on those unmarked tyres Hamilton used to good effect, with help from our friends at Pirelli:

They're medium compound tyres. There are two F1 factories, in Turkey and Romania. The Romania one is used at the moment, but there's the production line in Turkey as well. So those are medium tyres produced in Turkey, as opposed to Romania.

Hamilton is running them to benchmark against the Romania ones - but they're meant to be identical in every way. The same thing was done at the test last year. It's quite a common occurence.

The unmarked tyres were mediums from a different factory and Ocon sets the fastest time in the testing weeks so far with a 1:19 flat on soft tyres.

Not going to lie, this is the most exciting testing for me for years. I can't call the field spread at all so far and I love it.

Edit: Yeah I got the same info from Autosport, so effectively the same source.

Edit: Ocon pinged for track limits, boo!

Hamilton, cheat lap aside sets a lap faster than last year's pole position lap.

It's currently 10c outside.

Wow.

I read something from Allison yesterday where he's saying the coke bottle rear end is worth 0.25 alone and that overall this car is "much much faster" than last year.

It would blow my mind if McLaren have botched the integration of the Renault engine so hard given their experience.

this failure looks cooling related. The others may have been put down to a bad batch of batteries.

Lap time watch: It should come as no surprise we are seeing some quick times, the new track surface alone should cut ~2 seconds from last year.

Speaking of the new tarmac...
HAM: "I like a track that's a bit more dated in terms of surface. Drivers in drivers' briefing are constantly complain about bumps, but you have to manoeuvre around bumps. You can brake a little bit more offline or brake afterwards, or slightly before them. Or you have to set the car up to be a little bit better in terms of ride. But that's what the character of a circuit is. You flatten it out and it's got bunch of corners but it's missing something."

"When you smooth it out you make it easier and in all honesty this track is a lot easier. Driving it today is the easiest it's been the whole 10 years I've been driving."

I tend to agree with him, however I believe the main reason for the new surface was for the MotoGP series where the riders were really struggling with braking.

Ffs fix your shitbox Renault!! It's a joke, we have the best package and are doomed to run on a GP2 engine :(

PS: I fear it will be another easy title for Lewis.

There were also plenty of reasons to shit on McLaren when they blamed Honda a little too much
