Edit: never heard of Heilung. May have seen the name but holy shit, their stage show is amazing! No clue if their metal though lol this video is all kinds of tribal type stuff. Very impressive
Not metal no, but it's pretty cool. Reminds me of Wardruna or Hagalaz' Runedance. I'm a bit iffy on those weird male vocals in the middle though...

Just read Casey Grillo left Kamelot earlier this month. No Kahn and now no Casey. Still a great band with Tommy and now Johan Nunez on drums but not the same.

Here's the new Kamelot track Ravenlight off their upcoming album The Shadow Theory

Metalsucks: Album Premiere: Slugdge - Esoteric Malacology

Mollusc-themed death/sludge, ho!

I had their previous album "Dim and Slimeridden Kingdoms" in heavy rotation, and this one is just as chuggalicious (sorry).

Thanks for this post. I usually don't settle in this sphere of metal but this album is fucking great. Been the soundtrack to my current play-through of Stellaris, where i'm playing a hivemind, galaxy-devouring molluscoid swarm.

Cheers.

Anyone seen Ghost live? They put on a good show?

I've seen them twice, each time with a "different" Papa Emeritus (II and III) and most likely different musicians as the Nameless Ghouls. Both times it was a great show. The music translates very well live regardless of the musicians and the visual presentation is amazing. If you enjoy their music, you should have a great time. I'm looking forward to seeing them again this tour.

Song of the Day

Some b side Anthrax today with one of my favorite songs of theirs. We're talking Finale from State of Euphoria. Ran into I'm the Man & Bring the Noise on youtube yesterday and found this cd at a used shop yesterday so let's take a spin down memory lane.

I still love me some Anthrax. SoE is my least favorite of the old stuff, gotta say. I only really go back to Be All, End All and Antisocial.

I like watching Alive 2 on YouTube every now and then. Such a great reunion.

I lost a lot of respect for Anthrax when they went through 3 singers in like a year (2009 I think?)

They wanted that sweet reunion cash with Joey, but didn't want John to leave. He wasn't about to hang around for a reunion tour so left

Shockingly the reunion fell through

They eventually find John Bush/Phil Anselmo wannabe Dan Nelson and write a bunch of heavier songs to fit him

It ends poorly with him so they kick him out, John Bush apparently is down to do some stuff so they do some festivals with him and are so happy to have him back in the band and will record their new album with him

But then John Bush doesn't actually care and doesn't want to record

So then they settle for Joey and "totally rewrite the songs to fit him, sound super old school" but they actually don't and he's just awkwardly singing his shtick over songs clearly meant for John Bush types

Anthrax were my favorites of the big 4 but watching that whole thing unfold was fucking embarrassing and soured me on them. Worship Music ended up being pretty shit too. Even if Dan Nelson was a douchebag (not that Scott and Charlie aren't too) I thought he was a good fit for them because he could sing both styles and go even more aggressive than Bush

It's also frustrating that aside from the Among The Living full album tour they "reunited with the old singer" but barely ever mix up their setlists. They aren't as bad as Exodus in that regard, who have played the same stupid setlist for the past 10+ years (recently adding "Not Paul Baloff, I'm The Only Option" Zetro to the mix to sing Bonded By Blood songs, which is apparently their only album before the 2000s)

Sound of White Noise is the end of my Anthrax love which I'm particularly fond of because it came out while I was in college. I've tried their newer stuff but it's all kinds of bland for me.

I think it's a good thing that I know so little about iterations of bands that are way past their prime.

Despite it being more in the realm of stuff like Alice In Chains I actually think SOWN is my favorite release of theirs.

the Silencer LP is a fucking incredible album, but no matter how hard I try I can't help but think those vox are King Diamond's most honest attempt at black metal.

Was jamming some Overkill and this came up in recommendations. Not sure I've listened to this band before but the goat is mesmerizing

If you dig that dark-folk soorta metal-isch blend i recommend checking out Voodoo Kungfu. Chinese extreme folk metal or something. It bangs, is all i can say

also studio version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CntKZf4i_S8

I'll say that I hated John Bush era Anthrax in studio but loved them live. I'm not fond of current anthrax material either even with Joey, but I'm glad he is back, they play with more energy than the other three big 4 bands who should call it quits with Slayer.

I'm the opposite. Saw Anthrax live during the sound of white noise era and was bored out of my mind.

Saw them again 20 years later and they won me over again.

So I prefer Joey live but Sound of White Noise is still my favorite Anthrax album.

I think it also comes down to the setlist

I'd much rather see the thrash material live, it's not even close. I just think the stuff they've been putting out is pretty terrible

Haven't gone to an Anthrax show, but watched a lot of YouTube and my only complaint with Joey is that damn microphone stick. That thing looks stupid...

Crazy how expensive the Metallica tickets were, I missed the fan club presale and General Admission floor were going for 200+ the day of. had to pass on that even though I have not seen them for over six years and I love Hardwired more than Death Magnetic, would like to have seen them play Here Comes Revenge live

Honestly no way am I ever paying that much for metallic tickets. Maybe like 30 years ago but certainly not modern metallica.

Liked most of the earlier Judas Priest albums, loved Sad Wings of Destiny and Painkiller, thought Jugulator had its moments, but was overall just OK, but nothing since really sounded all that interesting to me. The only solo Halford album that did much for me either was War of Words. Didn't even know that they were going to be releasing a new album in a few days until today, listened to two of the three released tracks, and um wow? Too early to tell from those two songs alone, but they sound reinvigorated, almost as though they are doing something similar as to what they did when they released Painkiller.

Hmm, or maybe not.

Church of Misery (JPN) - Ripping into Pieces

my programming professor asked me the other day if I listened to any doom metal and I was like wellllll yeahhhhh. I'm gonna lend him my Master of Brutality CD today. These guys are definitely one of the greatest things to come from Japan.

FUCK YES!! I host the heavy metal thread on another gaming forum, but it looks like this has many more people!! My current albums that I'm listening to are:
Violent Restitution by Razor
Ceremony of Opposites by Samael
Above the Light by Sadist
Into the Infernal Regions of the Ancient Cult by Inquisition
Darkness Descends by Dark Angel

What I tend to do is listen to albums on repeat for a while until I bore of them and move onto another album XD

RAZOR!

Are there any socially aware newer thrash bands aside from Violator around? Feeling a bit inspired by Razor - Miami. As current now as it ever was.

I have not forgot about this request I just have had limited time, will get to it tomorrow

Anyone have any recs for more stuff like this? Asian based ambient/atmospheric/black/etc..

I'll kill 2 birds here and give you a rec while also posting SotD

Song of the Day

Nortt - Af Dode

I'm really into bands that do atmosphere well. Nortt can do depressing and bleak like really no one else. I find their brand of ambient/doom/black metal really relaxing sometimes though. Soundtrack your next stroll through a foggy cemetery with this album.

Maybe shouldn't be surprised...but still massively disappointed that Jon Scahffer believes in staged mass shootings....

Holy shit. I haven't particularly been a fan of "extreme" bands (almost exclusively due to the vocals or production), and it took Opeth clicking with me in the late 90s to start branching out more, but there have been a few bands over the years that really did it for me.

I just found Slugdge. Maybe with my more limited experience through the discographies of all of the black or death bands that I haven't listened to makes this an ill formed opinion, but they sound a whole lot like a more modern take on Centaurus-A mixed with a bit of Dimmu Borgir, Carcass and maybe even a bit of Lamb of God, and not in the whole "retro is cool" way either.

Maybe shouldn't be surprised...but still massively disappointed that Jon Scahffer believes in staged mass shootings....

If his own idelogies creep into his lyrics, it shouldn't really be a surprise.

Metal has all manner of violence and atrocity as subject matter. Why single out one person's views? I'm a live and let live person though. All I care about is music I like otherwise I'd probably shitcan nearly everything I watch or listen to if I actually paid attention to others politics. Hell I can't stand Tom Cruise but his movies are fun.

I've never let politics or religion get in the way of (or influence) my enjoyment for a particular person's work. Anyway, this might shed some light on the matter.

Hahaha, what a moron. Does the dude think we were hunter gatherers in 1776 or some shit?

I can definitely still enjoy some art from questionable people. There's a bit of a line there though depending on what they use their platform for and what they in turn may contribute to. Like if David Duke created a metal band and was putting money into the KKK I'm going to stay the fuck away from that. Jon Schafer or Dave Mustaine's dumb opinion really doesn't do a ton in the grand scheme of things, though.

I guess if stupid ideology leaks into lyrics in a big obvious way then that's also annoying. Like I'm not going to blatantly play some song about arming teachers or some shit.

Riviers of Nihil just released their title track for their new album, Where Owls Know My Name. It's dope as hell and features Black Crown Initiate guitarist/clean vocalist on clean vocals (2 amazing things in 1 great package!).

REALLY digging the 3 tracks they've released so far, love all the sax and jazzy elements.

I saw that lol. He's definitely getting deep into Nugent territory. Still though, a rant during an interview is meh. The rants on stage are bullshit. I saw Disturbed years ago and dude gave some, I've got the mic so listen to my spiel shit. I was already getting bored with their music and that just ended it.

Yeah that's how I feel. It also helps that recent work by Megadeth and Iced Earth do fuck-all for me so it's easy to stay away. :P And yeah Schaffer's jingoism does infect his lyrics and his work, sadly. I liked Iced Earth a lot more when it was about old poems and classic horror or even comic book shit than his rah-rah-USA garbage.

I mostly stopped caring at The Glorious Burden (it had two memorable songs). Dystopia had its moments, but was mostly forgettable like pretty much everything they've done beyond Horror Show.

Me and my friend always "joke" about how 9/11 killed Iced Earth.

I believe they were at the time, right after Horror Show, going to open for Judas Priest on a U.S. tour. We were fucking hype about it. Finally the band was going to break through.

Next thing we know the tour is off, Matt Barlow wants to become a cop, and Jon Scaffer gets wrecked for becoming "ultra patriotic."

The latest album is actually pretty good. I was impressed. But the peak for me is still Something Wicked/Horror Show era. Matt Barlow was the best front man they ever had. Powerful unique voice that stood out from the rest of "power metal bands."

Anyhow. Jon is a hard working man and he says the current line up has played more show than they ever had before. He still insists that Iced Earth is a band without politics and wants to keep it that way.

Still debating if I will go to the March 15 show here in Houston.
