Thunder in the East is really a fun record.
We could have a vote for the more influential/best albums and/or similar votes like i.e best black metal albums, best progressive etc. But i think now might not be the best time. After this community grows a bit.
Edit: And hopefully merge with the other OT because it is basically the same.
Maybe 10 important/good albums for each decade up until now? That way every subgenre would get a chance to be represented. Something to get people interested and then they could branch off from there. Dunno.
This one. We are kin.
Prog/Metal/Psych/Space/Post/Doom/Sludge/Stoner ERA |OT| I got 99 Time Signatures and 4/4 Ain't One
I think maybe just a sub-genre breakdown with a few albums each would be good. Just to give anyone looking to get into a specific genre some albums to check out. I'd be happy to suggest a few.

Yea, feel free to pm me some albums/bands or just post them here for everyone to collaborate on. Same for anyone. All suggestions on improving the OT are welcome.

I tried to post in that thread saying it seemed unnecessary but got shot down.I don't see a problem with a separate prog rock thread but I don't see how doom, sludge, and stoner should fit into that. *shrug*

I'm surprised by how enjoyable the new Cannibal Corpse album is. It's by no means anything amazing (or memorable) but it has a stronger focus on catchy songwriting than anything they've done for a long time. I love the early albums, particularly The Bleeding, and it's much more in that vein than the "SUPER TECHNICAL, EVERYTHING SOUNDS THE SAME AND IS PUMMELING ALL THE TIME" shit that they've done for a while
When I think of Corpsegrinder era I generally think like Kill and Evisceration plague which are really samey. The new one is thrashy and has more Bleeding grooves. Not just like every song is Paul half blasting and nonsense riffsI just listened to it 10 minutes ago, i think it's more of the same in the CorpsegrinderEra, but i love it anyway and want more.

I'll leave some of the classics to someone more knowledgeable. Of course Neurosis need to be there, Saint Vitus, YOB, Wolves in the Throne Room, etc.
I'm by no means a connoisseur, and I don't listen to every subgenre, but taking the stuff I love into account, I think the following are more or less essential (be it because of their importance or because there's nothing else like it):
Melvins - Bullhead
ISIS - Oeanic
Converge - Jane Doe
Mastodon - Leviathan
Deafheaven - Sunbather
High on Fire - Blessed Black Wings
OM - Variations on a Theme
Swans - I feel like Swans need to be represented, but I don't know which album. I'd say The Seer, but there's just so much stuff
Pallbearer - Foundations of burden
Russian Circles - Enter

Fake edit: just read about the other thread. If somehow this stuff I just posted doesn't align with the interests in thread, I understand too. I like that the metal community is inclusive, so it would be cool if we could have one thread for everyone, but I appreciate that would make conversation harder than if there were two or more threads.
The question is do we all just post albums we really enjoy or do we find some common ground on albums that are classics/genre defining/ good entry points to metal
I'm thinking the common ground. The instantly recognizable. Like Master of Puppets for example. Limit the number of covers to a few for the OT itself then maybe do a Google doc with actual recommendations. For the OT were trying to catch people's eyes and ears and ease them into the scene which I'd pick something kind of neutral to begin with and end with something edgy.
I am certain these are great bands,i only know wolves in the throne room, but are they that important to be considered classics?
I learned about High on Fire from the metal thread of forums old because someone made an offhand comment about their faster material which piqued my interest. Speaking for myself I'd rather see a diverse conversation. I have my favorites but its always nice to see what else there is out there.
If we're talking just about the essentials of classic metal, not really, the albums you posted are great examples of that already. However, if we take into consideration all the various subgenres, then I think some of those names deserve to be part of the conversation (Neurosis was hugely influential for a ton of bands playing today). It depends on how people decide to go about it. I think it would be helpful to have the OP list more than just the classics.
Hey there, MetalEra! Have I missed any good Thrash albums since the latest Vektor release?
Holy shit, I'm so jealous of you. I'm a huge Thou fan. What's your favourite album by them?So just got back from seeing Thou at place of about 20 people. Was legit.
They played 2 new songs, a nirvana cover (Flyod the barber) and 3 songs from Peasant.
I grabbed the 2LP limited press of Peasant while there. Bryan and the guys are so cool and down to earth.
check out his doom flip flops:

Ok, thought about things a bit and retooled the OT. See what you think.
I have every issue. I was absolutely devestated when it closed down. Yet to find an alternative myself :( If you ever do come across anything let me knowI used to buy the Rock a Rolla magazine, but that's gone, unfortunately... (anyone know of a good substitute?)
Wow, never heard this before. Budgie is secretly one of the best 70s rock bands, so its cool that Metallica covered one of their songs.
