So I totally didn't even know there was a new moonspell album out.

Gonna give it a listen, but I haven't really gotten into anything they've done since Sin/Pecado. However, their first three albums are some of my favourites.

Is this where I can talk about how fucking good Converge's new album is? Ordered the LP (found the violet one in stock) and waiting for the Roadburn single day tickets to go on sale. Gotta catch their set on the 19th (along with Cult of Luna and Sannhet too).

It's really good.
Like. Really.

I'll be following this thread.

Before we get the spotlight how can the OT be dressed up a bit? Any suggestions are welcome. One thought I had was putting in something like a list of essential albums. We're talking Master of Puppets, Rust in Peace, Reign in Blood, Powerslave, Scream Bloody Gore..albums like that. The iconic. Maybe 6 to 10 ish that offer a bit of variety, some eye catching artwork, and the best music that the scene has to offer. Ideas?

Maybe 10 important/good albums for each decade up until now? That way every subgenre would get a chance to be represented. Something to get people interested and then they could branch off from there. Dunno.

We could have a vote for the more influential/best albums and/or similar votes like i.e best black metal albums, best progressive etc. But i think now might not be the best time. After this community grows a bit.

Edit: And hopefully merge with the other OT because it is basically the same.

I think maybe just a sub-genre breakdown with a few albums each would be good. Just to give anyone looking to get into a specific genre some albums to check out. I'd be happy to suggest a few.

Which other? Didn't realize there were two.

This one. We are kin.

Prog/Metal/Psych/Space/Post/Doom/Sludge/Stoner ERA |OT| I got 99 Time Signatures and 4/4 Ain't One

Ah, a newer thread. I think there's room for both communities. That thread is a bit more focused where this is more general. Thanks for pointing it out. I went ahead and linked them in this OT so were not completely separate.

Edit: Forgot to add this

Yea, feel free to pm me some albums/bands or just post them here for everyone to collaborate on. Same for anyone. All suggestions on improving the OT are welcome.

I tried to post in that thread saying it seemed unnecessary but got shot down.I don't see a problem with a separate prog rock thread but I don't see how doom, sludge, and stoner should fit into that. *shrug*

Cool. Will do at some point when I get a chance.

Hell yes I am. They've always been great. Can't wait to see where they go next.

Yeah I had wanted to make a thread centered on prog music, both rock and metal. It'd obviously have some crossover with this thread but the rock portion I think would set it apart a bit more than that one might.

I'm surprised by how enjoyable the new Cannibal Corpse album is. It's by no means anything amazing (or memorable) but it has a stronger focus on catchy songwriting than anything they've done for a long time. I love the early albums, particularly The Bleeding, and it's much more in that vein than the "SUPER TECHNICAL, EVERYTHING SOUNDS THE SAME AND IS PUMMELING ALL THE TIME" shit that they've done for a while

I get the feeling that thread is really geared towards what I would call easy listening metal and that's cool too. I'd imagine Cannibal Corpse talk with bloody cover art isn't going to go over in their discussions.

Speaking of, this new Cannibal Corpse is definitely a new album of theirs. You basically get your face smashed for a while. I dig it.

I just listened to it 10 minutes ago, i think it's more of the same in the CorpsegrinderEra, but i love it anyway and want more.

When I think of Corpsegrinder era I generally think like Kill and Evisceration plague which are really samey. The new one is thrashy and has more Bleeding grooves. Not just like every song is Paul half blasting and nonsense riffs

(like this)

At a certain point it's going to sound like Fisher CC. But the new album is catchier and songs have more room to breathe

I'm by no means a connoisseur, and I don't listen to every subgenre, but taking the stuff I love into account, I think the following are more or less essential (be it because of their importance or because there's nothing else like it):

Melvins - Bullhead
ISIS - Oeanic
Converge - Jane Doe
Mastodon - Leviathan
Deafheaven - Sunbather
High on Fire - Blessed Black Wings
OM - Variations on a Theme
Swans - I feel like Swans need to be represented, but I don't know which album. I'd say The Seer, but there's just so much stuff
Pallbearer - Foundations of burden
Russian Circles - Enter

I'll leave some of the classics to someone more knowledgeable. Of course Neurosis need to be there, Saint Vitus, YOB, Wolves in the Throne Room, etc.

Fake edit: just read about the other thread. If somehow this stuff I just posted doesn't align with the interests in thread, I understand too. I like that the metal community is inclusive, so it would be cool if we could have one thread for everyone, but I appreciate that would make conversation harder than if there were two or more threads.

The question is do we all just post albums we really enjoy or do we find some common ground on albums that are classics/genre defining/ good entry points to metal?

I am certain these are great bands,i only know wolves in the throne room, but are they that important to be considered classics?

I learned about High on Fire from the metal thread of forums old because someone made an offhand comment about their faster material which piqued my interest. Speaking for myself I'd rather see a diverse conversation. I have my favorites but its always nice to see what else there is out there.

I'm thinking the common ground. The instantly recognizable. Like Master of Puppets for example. Limit the number of covers to a few for the OT itself then maybe do a Google doc with actual recommendations. For the OT were trying to catch people's eyes and ears and ease them into the scene which I'd pick something kind of neutral to begin with and end with something edgy.

I think pointing people in the direction of M-A and having users here to help with recommendations is enough of a resource

The easiest way to represent a genre is with its most popular bands, which can be easily done by googling "black metal" or whatever. Though if you did that today it'd probably get you a bunch of memes and cats so idk, google "Gorgoroth - Antichrist" friends

While I'm glad there's another thread for shit i never want to hear ever , it does remove activity and diversity from here.

Ok,then here are some albums i think are instantly recognizable:

Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Motörhead - Ace of Spades

If we're talking just about the essentials of classic metal, not really, the albums you posted are great examples of that already. However, if we take into consideration all the various subgenres, then I think some of those names deserve to be part of the conversation (Neurosis was hugely influential for a ton of bands playing today). It depends on how people decide to go about it. I think it would be helpful to have the OP list more than just the classics.

Me too, and I've already listened to a few of the suggestions made here. It makes for a more interesting thread too!

No one can ever agree on which classics need to be highlighted. I sure as shit wouldn't want MoP to be the highlight of any metal thread... if I had to pick a Metallica album it'd be KeA or RTL anyway. But why would a thread for metal enthusiasts need to talk about Metallica? It's not going to be a discovery or anything for anyone.

That said I'd be willing to come up with a list of my own of "essentials" for the subgenres of heavy, thrash, power, death, black, doom, gothic, and folk/viking, at least. For stuff like sludge, metalcore, post-metal or all that newfangled stuff, that's above my paygrade. ;)

Wasnt my intention to sound like a dick,i know Neurosis are an influential band but i never gave them a proper listen. It would be good if OP would list more than just classics but i am thinking how would this look.Should everbody list a number of classic albums and some the like or maybe divided into genres or decades.Should the list be so everyone can discover something or more cater towards people who want to jump into metal?

It's a video game forum. I would say recommend them the soundtrack to Brütal Legend. It has a pretty good spread of genres and "classics". And then just encourage them to come into the thread and ask for recommendations.

IMO, the OT should stay away from "official" lists all together. Like many have said, metal is just too varied and dependent on personal taste for there to be a defacto list, but the more personal recommendation or AOTY lists the better. Those types of lists encourage discovery which I feel everyone should do. I usually find new (a lot of times older bands I never listened to) music to listen to most days of the week and with so many releases each month, its hard to keep up. There is always a lot of good shit out there that you are not listening to!

Rather than lists of people's favourite albums, I think links to relevent websites/record labels/YouTube channels etc would be better so people can go explore by themselves

Dunno if there are any Yngwie fans here. I tend to think he's gotten a bit sloppy with age, but this is such a sick improvisation (partially, all sick though). I've listened to it too many times now. His vibrato is out of this world.

So just got back from seeing Thou at place of about 20 people. Was legit.
They played 2 new songs, a nirvana cover (Flyod the barber) and 3 songs from Peasant.
I grabbed the 2LP limited press of Peasant while there. Bryan and the guys are so cool and down to earth.

check out his doom flip flops:
-snip-
Holy shit, I'm so jealous of you. I'm a huge Thou fan. What's your favourite album by them?

The Black Market series by Stereogum is one of the only things I'll read as far as online metal publications go. Great variety and I've been surprised by some legit underground mentions. Would be great for the OP, imo.

What online metal publications do people read here? I am always looking for a site where i can get some good reviews/recommendations.
I tend to gravitate towards angrymetalguy and nocleansinging most of the time,i browse other sites as well but not that frequently.

For me, it was mostly a period of hunting down bands and labels on instagram, Facebook and Spotify and following them so I can be up to date.

Whenever something interests me, I keep a bookmark or follow them on Spotify. At the end of the year I take a look around at the various AOTY lists to see what I missed. Otherwise, I follow Invisible Oranges, metalsucks, Revolver and occasionally I take a look at The sludgelord and some other blogs.

It sucks that I'm missing a ton of stuff, but I wouldn't have the time anyway.

I used to buy the Rock a Rolla magazine, but that's gone, unfortunately... (anyone know of a good substitute?)

I'd wager this thread will be a great source of info, too!
