He still insists that Iced Earth is a band without politics and wants to keep it that way.
I mean... that hasn't been true since fucking 2004 at least, lol. Even Horror Show before it had that weird-ass Ghost of Freedom cringe-song (the only one I skip on an otherwise great album, it doesn't belong there).

I always took that tune as a preliminary of what Glorious Burden would end up. It's a bit of an odd fit in an otherwise monster theme, but ghosts of the Civil War I guess? The tune is perfectly placed imo. Takes that full on thrash blast of the first tunes and gets into a nice groove rather than continuing to blast. Gets the flow of albums like Painkiller which I like.

I always thought that it was WW1/WW2 themed song.

Happy International Women's Day, everyone. I made a thread about this on my own forum but why not post this here too? Let's celebrate the kick-ass women of metal.

I'll start with some cool ladies from my home country of Canada, because why not.

---

Cauchemar - Heavy/doom from Québec with my bff Annick Giroux <3
3540311356_photo.jpg

[Bandcamp]

Whilst their later albums like Tenebrario are more polished, I have a soft spot for their debut EP. Le voile d'Isis and Le gardien de la terre are just damn memorable and probably still my favourite tracks by them.

Fun facts: Annick is not only the author of the Heavy Metal Cookbook, Hellbent for Cooking, she also did guest vocals (well, spoken lines) for the intro to Malokarpatan's latest album. Which I didn't even know at the time I checked out the album. Imagine my surprise checking out a Slovakian black metal band and the first lines I hear are my friend's strong Québécois accent reciting Émile Nelligan, haha. <3

---

Blood Ceremony - psychedelic doom from Ontario, feat. Alia O'Brien
3540318499_photo.jpg

Probably the "leading" band in terms of female-fronted psych. doom at the moment. Alia has a great stage presence and her organ and flute playing is hypnotizing.

---

I might post more later. For now, how about you, MetalEra?

If you want decently produced, then these are my picks.

Uada - Devoid of Light
Tsjuder - Desert Northern Hell
Ancient - Back to the Land of the Dead
Mgla - their discography

Excellent! Might I add Völur from Toronto who are an experimental doom trio which shares the bassist from Blood Ceremony and features Laura C. Bates on violin. I saw them earlier this week and love their set.

Also for me I am going to quote my post earlier in this thread which featured women in metal.

Maybe not exactly what you're looking for but check out Cloud Rat - Fever Dreams

It's a free EP compilation on bandcamp. Cloud Rat are grindcore with a heavy black metal (and a bit of shoegaze) influence. I like all of their stuff but Fever Dreams is my favorite. Nice mix of blast, riffs, shredding vocals and pretty melodic guitar

For reference I love the first two Gorgoroth albums (and Quantos).

Batushka has simple riffs one could say but they sound great.

Nagelfar has good riffs too and good mixing (for BM any ways) and also my favourite BM band (they're split up now though). Not to be confused with the Swedish band Naglfar, Nagelfar is the German one.

Ah, so Morrigan owns Metal-Archives?
Yep!

That's casting a pretty wide net, there's tons of well produced BM.

First band that comes to mind based on your list is Dark Fortress.

God damn I love this fucking song. Almost funny how heavy it is when it kicks in, the production delivers

Also Kampfar comes to mind, especially the album Mare.

Of course the best sounding BM album (in the ballpark anyway) is Katatonia The Great Cold Distance. That CD was widely used as a reference by audiophile shops to sell high end home audio gear.

Song of the Day:

This one is more metal-adjacent than actually metal, but it is one of the side-projects from the guy that brought you Igorrr.
It's pretty weird and avant-garde, as you would expect, but I find it kinda hypnotic.
And when the singer lets loose at 2:20, woof.

New Priest is pretty good so far, about what you'd expect from them at this point. Better than the last few from what I've heard I'd say.

Not a hugely popular band around these parts, but my wife and I bought our tickets to see Nightwish next week in Philly. I'm hoping for some deep cuts. DEEP CUTS, I say.

Also, on the topic of Jon Schaffer a little while back in the thread... yeah. It just makes me shake my head. 9/11 did kind of break that band. I was obsessed with IE in high school. My first ever underground metal show was IE/In Flames/Jag Panzer on the Horror Show tour. They had so much momentum at that time in their career. Ah well. There's always Burnt Offerings.

I'd like to shout out my boys Insane from Sweden. Known these guys since they were like 15 and was completely blown away by their first full-length album. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoyed that first Defiance record as it has both a similar sound and compositional style. I don't think its for everyone but if you're deep into Thrash and have a good grasp of the nuance within the genre, this album has a LOT to offer:

man, the new Judas Priest album is actually pretty damn good. Better than a lot of things they've released in the past couple of decades.

If this ends up becoming the band's final offering then it's a great swansong IMHO.

If female fronted classic heavy metal sounds appealing to you, check out the new album 'Another World' from Jessikill. It's awesome.

Any thoughts on the new BTBAM?
Its good. A bit better than coma but still has much of that same sound which kind of sucks if you weren't a fan of that album (I fall into that category). Blot reminds me of something off of great misdirect but the album is really short and its stupid that they cut a cd in half to release it in two parts.

How about the best female growler ever? 1996 and no one has ever come close since.

Great song! The riffs reminded me a bit of Buried At Sea's "Aquanaut" (or the third track of their "Migration" album, as they're the same songs):

Buried At Sea are a really great band to see live if you want to feel guitars more than hear them, btw.

My vote for best female frontwoman is a tie from 2 bands that they don't work in anymore

#1 Rosalie Cunningham from Purson. They sadly broke up, but I saw her open for Ghost a cpl years ago, she's gonna be back.

#2 just managing her bfs band these days, Angela Gossow. She took death metal to a new level just with her voice. I saw her live once in a closet of a bar and she is terrifying. I wish she was still screaming for Arch Enemy!

New band with the drums/vocals of Wormrot. Sounds like a mix of Rotten Sound and Jane Doe Converge. I like it quite a bit, especially the second half when the guitar stuff gets a little more pronounced

Any thoughts on the new BTBAM?

I'm enjoying half of it really. There isn't one song that I like all of it, including my favorite track, millions. This "album" is good but it doesn't have a lot of the things I like about BTBAM (just like coma ironically) the sweeping riffs, unconventional transitions within the songs, theres only one guitar solo, I really like the vocals, but the harsh vocals are very underwhelming.

Despite that, I keep listening to it because the parts that I do like are really fucking good. Apparently the second half is going to be much heavier and in your face type, which is what I like from BTBAM.

Parallax 2 is still the GOAT BTBAM album. Hopefully the second half is more like parallax 2 and less like coma.

Me and my friend always "joke" about how 9/11 killed Iced Earth.

I believe they were at the time, right after Horror Show, going to open for Judas Priest on a U.S. tour. We were fucking hype about it. Finally the band was going to break through.

Next thing we know the tour is off, Matt Barlow wants to become a cop, and Jon Scaffer gets wrecked for becoming "ultra patriotic."

The latest album is actually pretty good. I was impressed. But the peak for me is still Something Wicked/Horror Show era. Matt Barlow was the best front man they ever had. Powerful unique voice that stood out from the rest of "power metal bands."

Anyhow. Jon is a hard working man and he says the current line up has played more show than they ever had before. He still insists that Iced Earth is a band without politics and wants to keep it that way.

Still debating if I will go to the March 15 show here in Houston.

I wonder if Jake Dreyer joining had any influence at all other than a few leads. Just like Jeff Loomis joining Arch Enemy, his talent is more than likely being restrained within Iced Earth. If you haven't heard them yet...

You can't go wrong with some classic Mercyful Fate

No, you can't.

Just found out about them recently myself. Pretty good stuff.

The Lyrics are Amazing !:

When purgatory's waiting
The girl immaculate
The highest of commandments dictates to copulate
No grave is animated, you're buried all alone
So let her work a wonder
And wake your flesh and bone

Resurrection by erection
Raise your phallus to the sky and you never die
It's resurrection by erection
Raise your bone up to the sky and you never gonna die
Hallelujah, resurrection

The funeral is calling
The mortuary blow
Between my legs I'm waking
I rise from down below
Why do you think, believer
God gave you carnal lust?
So pray to get a hard-on
Before we turn to dust

Resurrection by erection
Raise your phallus to the sky and you never die
It's resurrection by erection
When you wake up from the dead and the angels give a head
Hallelujah, resurrection
Resurrection (ooh, ha)
Resurrection (ooh, ha)
Resurrection

Now I want my resurrection
All my life for resurrection
All I want is resurrection now
Oh, ha, resurrection now
The devil and the maiden
Prepare for going wild
The new messiah calling
The purgatory child
Before my flesh is fading
The virgin has a turn
The third of days we're climbing the point of no return

The resurrection by erection (resurrection by erection)
Raise your phallus to the sky and you never die
It's resurrection by erection (resurrection by erection)
Raise your bone up to the sky and you never gonna die
Hallelujah, resurrection

Based on this bands, and being heavy riffed Black Metal i'll recommended this, it's very well produced so it's all audible and distinctable and it's a good album

I'm hoping they vary their sound a little more. I have three albums by them now, and each one has the exact same sound.
Personally.i would like them to make a few more orchestral versions of their songs like they did for their "blood of the saints" and "preachers of the night " albums.

They really bring out Atilla's opera background.
