I understand the dislike for Stroll and his family and have no affection for him myself, but this is bullshit. I didn't see Palmer get a podium in a very mediocre car. I didn't see Palmer take a car that was complete shit in the wet and put it on the front row.

Dislike Stroll all you want, I do, but statements like this just make you sound like a complete fucking moron.

Baku was a fluke race for everyone. Hamilton had the headrest issue, Massa probably could have won if his suspension hadn't broke.

Stroll started front row in Monza because both redbulls got 20+ place grid penalties.

Yeah Baku really can't count for much of anything, look at the lap charts of the podium finishers, Bottas came from a lap down and beat Stroll. RIC's early pitstop had him at 16th.

So in effect what you're saying is that the results should only count if the fastest car wins? Should Ricciardo and Verstappen's wins be stricken if the Mercs or Ferraris had trouble?

The happenings in Baku don't change the fact that Stroll drove extremely well, especially towards the end when he had a train coming towards him with Bottas, Vettel and Hamilton and he kept his cool. It was certainly a million times better drive than anything Palmer ever managed. Speaking of which, why the hell is Palmer somehow being held up as this paragon? The only reasons he himself was in F1 was money and family connections.

He drove an okay race.

Look, he started 8th and there were somewhere around 9 faster cars during the race that day, of which all but 2 had issues/retirements.
Under normal conditions he would have finished at or below his starting position.
It's not anything better than Palmer's 6th place in Singapore.

Baku was a bit of a lottery. Stroll did well to stay out of trouble in a very eventful race, but that's about it. He was also outpaced by his team mate again isn't it? Can't remember.

OK, lets frame it this way.

Does anyone in this thread believe that Lance Stroll should be in F1 on merit alone?

Not even 2 weeks until the first practice and hopefully no shattered hopes and dreams.

This season is looking like a wash.

My only hope is seeing Toro Rosso do well in the Honda.

Looks like Mercedes has a rear tyre degradation issues on softer compounds, especially on supersofts. But looks like they think it could be solved till Melbourne

Meanwhile Mark Hughes from Motorsport magazine made an interesting observation - Ferrari could have some fuel saving issue aka reworked engine could be too thirsty. AMuS also reported that.

Depends. Is the rest of the grid filled by the top 20 drivers in the world, or the current line-up? And anyway, the argument was about Jolyon Palmer who isn't in F1 anymore. Speaking of Palmer though; I recently watched some 1984 races and got a good chuckle out of James Hunt going all in on what a useless twat Jonathan Palmer was...

Jonathan Palmer didn't set the world alight. In fact his bigger contribution to Motorsport is probably happening right now as owner of MSV. His son has achieved more racing-wise than his father though.

Of course, there's the irony that Palmer replaced Hunt as commentator alongside Murray Walker when Hunt died in 1993.

It'll be so depressing if RB does indeed have a competitive chassis, but the engine holds them back again while Ferrari keep ferraring.

Yeah, this season is going to be depressing. I didn't mind the Red Bull domination 10-13 because we had two extremely close seasons, but things aren't looking good for the near future. The wait for 2020 will be loooooong.
2021. The new regulations for the engines won't be until 2021. And yes, I'm not looking forward to another donimation by Mercedes. We've had 8 seasons won by two teams at this rate, bordering on 9 if this season plays out as it does. I had enough of this shit when Schumacher kept winning and I'm one of his biggest fans.

Please don't remind me. 2020 sounds a little less depressing.

Reports that Newey has stepped down as Red Bull technical director.

So the rumours were true? Newey and a posse of Red Bull engineers working with Honda / Toro Rosso. I'm looking forward to Asaki's Beast being paired with Newey's chassis after the summer break.

JK has already confirmed he and Honda are already working on the 2019 car.

Will Buxton's impressions of the 2018 challengers:

Haas above Toro Rosso and Force India?

Yeah ill have to see that shit to believe it. Maybe Toro Rosso might struggle but Force India should be able to beat Haas.

I feel bad because i do agree that Williams and McLaren are towards the back of the pack.
Seeing a Williams in last place while trying would be the saddest thing ever.

Isn't the Haas basically last year's Ferrari with a halo and a newer engine? Not surprised it's quick.

So I just watched the end of the 1984 championship. Am I the only one greatly amused that the French organizers stopping the Monaco GP to give Prost the win ended up costing him the championship? Such sweet irony.

For those not familiar: Prost was leading at Monaco in the rain, but Senna was catching him at four seconds a lap. Shortly before Senna caught up to him the organizers (French) stopped the race despite the conditions not being significantly worse than they had been. Prost got the win, but because they hadn't reached three quarters distance only half points were awarded. So Prost only got 4,5 points, while he would have got 6 for finishing second in a full race. In the end he lost the championship to Lauda by 0,5 points...

But...Ferrari is showing well in preseason, I'm confused. Vettel was scorching yesterday and he was half sandbagging

Mercedes race sims were ridiculously quick and we never saw them do a proper qualy sim....i hope i'm wrong but would be surprised if Ferrari or Red Bull are close

will be interesting to see what the reaction is to another year of Mercedes dominance

So essentially everyone is sandbagging except the smaller teams. We essentially know nothing lol. Except Ferrari may have a thirsty engine and Mercs may have a tyre degredation issue

Mercedes will be hard to knock but they will have to fight Ferrari and Red Bull for the wins like last season. The whole field looks surprisingly solid with 2018 parts and no bigger issues. There is going to be some awesome races and Alonso will be back in P5 where he has been dearly missed.

Merc won't win every race, didn't do it even when they dunked on everyone to start the era. I don't think anything changes until at least 2021, but Mercedes will likely still beast it then too.

Hamilton could have 7 titles by 2021 anyways.
Yes they will unless they sabotage themselves. Bottas is not Rosberg though.
