Thank you for checking. Yeah, I'm okay. I've been non-stop interviewing and was actually booked pretty solid last week. One place wants to fly me out to meet the team, so I hope that goes well.

Luckily, I'd been getting "defensive" certifications, just in case I hit a stumbling block like this.

Well, that at least sounds like things are headed in the right direction for you.

Any other particular reason you feel so bad? Unemployment does suck but your situation sounds better than most, which is a good thing.

Anyways, good luck on your meet up with that team!

I wasn't expecting to leave my job the way I did and felt/feel betrayed by my former boss. I also have a wife and son, so there's extra pressure on me to get something as soon as possible.

The interview situation does help me feel like I'm still marketable, though, so that's been helping, but we'll see how things go from there.

I'm in the third round for a QA Analyst position. There's one more after this, but damn I just want the process over with already.

I got called for an interview for another bank for this wednesday, I hope I managed to nail it this time. That summer vacation is ending here is helping a lot with the job market picking up a bit. It was terrible in February.

I hate how I keep getting interview offers, but I can't make it to them because they're too far away from me because I don't have a car. My options are so limited without a car.

Got back from the job fair in Tokyo last night. It was a complete blowup as was a majority of the trip I guess. -rant time-

Started by forgetting my wallet at home and having to taxi it to the station, thankfully about 3 or so minutes before the bus got there but still... was kinda a sign because I usually never do things like that. Anyway it was a two day thing, first day was kind of just seminar and talks about what people did after they finished my current jobs program time. These were mostly unhelpful as someone who has no idea what they really want to do even at 29 lol. A lot of people tooting their own horn and no real time for decent questions.

There were other things there but...

Went to entrepreneurship in Japan workshop next... this shit right here....
WHERE THE FUCK DID THEY FIND THIS GUY AND WHY DID NO ONE CHECK HIM. He was shady as all fuck. He told some of the logistic loopholes for owning a business in Japan like startup costs and what not. But had 0 advice on how to do so, since apparently to his own admissions he has no idea how to get a loan from the bank and that they dont do that here (they do...) and his got his mom to give him the startup money........................... geeze this made me so mad. He supposedly has owned his own English school for several months now and teaches something like 4 sessions a day to business men, but everything about this was sketch as hell. Paying clients to get him new students, and what not, 0 clue about real operations in Japan and more. Talked about businessmen he admired but thats it. There was more advice in the crowd talking to each other than him. Also 0 prep work done, presentation was bland, he had no clue what he was going to talk about next. Many people walked out.

Second day was the fair itself. Started with a hour talk about how tough it is getting a new job in Japan without being 1 fresh out of college and already schmoozing with bosses as most college kids are introduced to companies around their second or third year of university and have something/someone lined up right away. Or 2 being an insanely good at Japanese person... I understood the discussion which was all in Japanese but man it was disheartening. Most of it I already knew though.

Fair itself was as I said a blow up. I went to several companies I wanted too meet, and several were interesting but clearly there to promote themselves only as well as being sketchy. Learned that I am vastly under qualified in my Japanese and its hard to not get down about it... I mean factually I'm up against people who have been, and able to study the language since high school and in university where as I could only started when I moved here two years ago. I went to the companies not looking for 100% fluent people and some were ok. The hotels were what I was interested in but not sure what they would want exactly even after talking to them, seems like they want general bilingual staff. Others were smaller up and coming companies like an indie mobile game dev. They seemed interesting and my favorite to talk to but also seem to want manager/several years experience staff which is a bit much. Then some were odd ducks like a company that was fully staffed already... but seemingly did not actually have a business or building yet, but were flagging people down as a result of no one talking to them. I asked some BS questions and got the exact random terms about business in the reply lol... Others were the teaching companies, most were offering basically exactly what I do now positions for a yearly contract, which seems like the best stay in the country option now but also don't want to just switch companies and be stuck in the same position next year.

-sigh- Anyway. Like I said it was a blowup on multiple levels to my confidence and perspective of working here. I know the best bet is just take whatever random English teacher job (which I like don't get me wrong) but these are almost always simple contracts for several months to a year only. Next option is to tell my supervisor to try and hook me up with meeting some business peoples locally and spreading the word I wanna work in Japan more.

Sucks being from the middle of nowhere, moving somewhere you feel comfortable and love, and having the only future you can see at the moment being... going back to the middle of nowhere :( I just want a job I can be interested in!

sorry for the rant but this weekend really got me down.

I just had a call from a recruiter about a position that they sent my CV over for. Apparently the company have approved it without the need for an interview, unless somebody made a mistake. I'm waiting to hear back with an update.

Follow this thread every once and a while...I constantly battle with the thought of switching jobs.

Currently been in publishing for 3 years and as some of you know, it does NOT pay well. Especially for a company in NYC. Doesn't help that I'm commuting from NJ every day, adding to my expenses. Honestly, I'm probably LOSING money coming to work.

Anyone ever find themselves in a situation like this? Not sure when it's time to just call it and start searching for some place better.

Ah - okay. That's different than something I've ever experienced, so it makes sense why you would feel that way. Anyways - hang in there! Here's to hoping you end up with a really great job.

Of the 3 interviews (2 phone, 1 on-site) I had two weeks ago, two have declined and one seems to have ghosted as I haven't heard anything even after a follow up email. I don't mind the declines as much but at least have the decency not to ghost on people you've interviewed. I have another phone interview here in 10 min. Hoping for the best...

So, back in November, I had a phone interview and it went really well. They flew me in a month later, and I felt that went well, too. Then, the holiday break hit, and I had to wait until mid-January to hear anything else. The next step was a sample project, which I had two weeks to complete. I did the project, submitted it, then it took another two weeks to hear any feedback on it. Finally, today, I got the news...

They want to hire me!

Just one problem...

They've decided they have more urgent needs at the moment and are going to put off filling this position for another year.

I'm devastated. I hate my current industry (not just my job), and where I live, and this was something I've been wanting to do for the better part of two decades. It was also a very rare opportunity close to family.

Being passed over for a better candidate is one thing, but to find out you would've been hired, but there's suddenly no job? After three months? That's a new one for me.

Happened to me about a year and a half ago. Was in a job where I liked the work itself, but the company and management were infuriating, I liked my coworkers but their attitude was getting me down, there was loads of time and the salary was pathetic.

About 3 months before I left I decided to go. I saved more money than usual and decided to gamble on myself, saying I deserve better. Took about a month and a half, but I did get to visit home for 3 weeks at least during that time, so was more of a break.

Mind, I wasn't picky, but like I described, I couldn't find a worse job. Plus with no wife, kids or a mortgage, I'm mobile, so my options were pretty wide. Unlike the previous time where I was laid off, this time I could take my time and now live in a better city with a more fulfilling job.

I'm the type to be pretty open to change, so keep that in mind, but I'm all for everyone finding a job where they're happy.

Anybody have any suggestions as to where I can make an online portfolio for some videos and photos? I'm currently trying to completely switch careers, and kind of get back into what I went to college for, and have an interview Friday where an online portfolio would be very helpful. I just want to create some content examples and link to some videos I've got uploaded on Youtube/Vimeo.

Thanks!

Just got offered a new job. Seemed like it could have been a good fit. I have all the qualifications they want, and even certifications they mentioned in the interview were desirable for the direction the position is heading. It is a position that is governed by a CBA and they offered me... the very first step with no vacation off the hop.

Nice to feel wanted, but I don't think they are going to be able to make up the (sizable) difference in pay and some vacation off the hop. Good to feel wanted though I guess.

Anybody have any tips for interviewing with a non-profit? I have an interview tomorrow and I've worked in the corporate sector since I graduated college. I'm sure most of the questions/process will be the same as I'm used to, but any tips on questions to ask or general insight?

Guys, I found a job at long last! It was a company that had passed me over back in January and now they called to tell me another position in the department is open, so I accepted it.

I have a great salary for a entry position, and it is in a credit rating agency.

Good luck to everyone that continues on the hunt!

I've only ever worked in non-profit so I'm interested in how different you find the interviews. I can't really think of anything besides showing passion for and connection with the organization's mission.

Its been a while since I've been on the market, and I have a job lined up, just waiting for my background check to clear w/ the Govt since I'll need a secret clearance.

But, here's my situation, just want some thoughts.

I worked for just under 9 years for a large corporation, then last year, took a shot at a much smaller company after obtaining my security certification. I worked there for just under a year, the job itself wasn't bad, but the manager was horrible. She ended up letting me go a few weeks back (the company has an incredibly high turnover), but back in December, I had interviewed and accepted a position working in information security for the Govt. I have just been waiting for my clearance to come through, but who knows how long that will be.

Problem is, as stated above, I was let go from my previous job. While money is tight (I did apply for unemployment), I'm stuck waiting for this clearance to come through. Do you think I should start looking for other jobs? I'd hate to start somewhere, then only be there a short time (could be days even) and have to leave, because the position w/ the Govt. is what I've been working towards my entire career in networking.

Plus, this whole not working thing is driving me up the wall. I've been working full time since I was 16 (even through school), so to suddenly not have a job, its killing me inside. :(

Anyone in here have experience with applying for a government job? I want to try and get FSO job. I have a job waiting for me in China, but the visa requirements are terrible nowadays and i want to finally get a job that I can actually grow in. Here's the problem. I got a degree in Marketing way back in 2009. Graduated and couldn't find shit in my field because of you know why. Now I have 8 years of experience but in teaching. The FSO requirements seem like that won't be a problem. But right now they only have an opening with IT which I haven't ever done. I am good at electronics and i know i could learn it easily. But I doubt they'll accept me if I don't have relevant experience. I wish i was born in the days where they actually taught you things at a job.

How am i supposed to"pivot" if no one gives me a chance to?

My question is, could I post my resume here and get some tips on it. What else can I do to actually get certified or what certifications do people like to see in IT? What jobs do you think I could do with my marketing degree right now that isn't sales. I'm not the sales type unless I actually believe in what I'm selling...which aint much.

Anyways, I want a job that isn't complete shit and that uses the experience I already have or that can be learned somewhat easily. I do not want to go back to school for another 4 years to get another degree that won't mean dick when i finish...so please don't suggest anything like that. I could go back or do online courses while in China this year. But i wouldn't want to do any certs that take 2 to 3 years.

Do you mind posting the job opening you are interested in (is it on usajobs.gov)? I started working for US Gov in 2011 and I moved to a new position in 2017. Also, by FSO do you mean Foreign Service with Dept. of State or am I way off.

Anyway, first thing about your resume if you are trying to get hired through usajobs is to try and show what skills or experience you have that match the job duties. Your resume shows your education and good experience with marketing, as well as very good experience and growth as a language instructor/professor. In your non-public resume I would add your starting-ending salary and contact info for your previous supervisor if possible. Since I am not sure what job you are interested in (maybe Foreign Service Officer, maybe IT with Dept. of State) I can't be too specific but you should try to not only show your skills but relate it to the job duties on the listing. I would say that if you are interested in IT then you should start additional education now.

I would also add to keep your expectations realistic when it comes to possible federal employment. Unless you have very relevant experience, you will essentially be applying based on your education. So you will be competing with all the other people that have Master's degrees and are trying to squeeze into the job postings open to the public. Based on education you may only qualify for a GS-5/7/9 job. This would be the "pivot" you are talking about (starting entry/mid level but they WILL teach you the job). BUT, if you get in you will have quick salary growth and access to the job posting open only to your agency or other fed employees which is a big advantage. After a few years you will qualify for the GS-11/12/13 postings because essentially the only people with relevant experience are the ones who did the job at the lower grade.

Finally, if you are interested in other people's experiences being hired on with the US Gov check out the federalsoup forums. Take everything with a grain of salt, but it is nice to talk to other people seeking federal employment and you can pick the brain of people who were hired or in farther stages of the hiring process.

I don't know if this helped at all. I do know what it is like thinking of changing careers and relocating so hopefully at least one thing was relevant. Good luck.

Had a second interview today at a place and it went really well and they will send me an offer in the next few days or so. They showed me around, my potential future desk and so on. Would be really exciting to finally start my work life (however long that excitement lasts for haha), hope nothing goes wrong from here to there, now.

Anyone have any advice for juggling offers and interviews?

Had a couple of interviews with the my city. They came back with an offer which was not great, but they've revised it into a place where I can see myself taking it.

I applied for another position in another department in the city and they just got back to me. The pay probably won't be much different between the two, but the second position is definitely a couple higher rungs up the corporate ladder. Should I try to delay the offer on the first job to get at least the first interview down at the second position?

I can defintely see myself taking the first job if the second doesn't pan out. I think it is time to move on in my current position although I think they would try hard to keep me.

After 3 months of unemployment, finally got an offer! It is tempt to hire (3 months evaluation), but I am confident I'll be able to move to permanence. I'll surely be putting in my all to get to that point anyway. These last 3 months were rough financially and emotionally. :P

Best of luck to everyone else looking. Your time will come.

Congrats!

Congrats to you, DriftingSpirit! I'm sure you will be a permanent employee in no time. Sorry to hear it's been such a struggle but I am sure it will all be worth it soon.

Thanks. I need a big raise right now. I need minimum 15k raise.

My pleasure, and I wish you the best of luck.

Sure thing. How much of a relocation is it? Having done multiple cross country and state moves, I can say it's always a stressful process to some degree but planning well pays off in spades.

I managed to make it to the interview stage for a job that I'm pretty sure I can get. But, its a phone group interview for an hour, and I have no idea how that really works. What should I be expecting from this?

Congrats Septimus! Hope everything goes well!
Thank you! Congrats to you as well!

Sure thing. How much of a relocation is it? Having done multiple cross country and state moves, I can say it's always a stressful process to some degree but planning well pays off in spades.
It'd be from LA to SF, so it's not too far, and the company does provide a generous relocation package. They want to move things along very quickly, though, so the logistics will be tough.

I'll probably have to go up before my wife and son, and then we'll need to figure out what to do with our house. Plus, we have dogs, so that's another thing to deal with.

Group as in group of applicants? Or do you mean you'll be talking with a group of interviewers? I have no experience with the former, but if it's the latter, most likely one person will do most of the talking, but try to at least address everyone.

Hey Septimus Prime, you wouldn't happen to be in games QA, would you? (I don't know how to tag you personally, I can't do the at symbol for some reason). It'd be nice to see your portfolio and/or resume, if you've got one, as I too am trying to get into games development (level design primarily, but I actually like QA as well).

Is this a good place for resume critique? I could always use more feedback on my resume and portfolio/LinkedIn, if someone is willing and able :)

Hi. Yeah, I was in games QA for a long time. Let's slip into DMs.
