The original Dino Crisis is a Survival Horror title that takes a lot of concepts from the Resident Evil series and gives them their own twist. A lot of the ideas in this game were used to test what sort of mechanics could possibly be added to other RE titles in the future. Despite that though, Dino Crisis stands well on its own as being one of the best titles in the Survival Horror genre. With its emphasis on puzzles and terrifying dinosaurs that add a shake-up to the typical survival horror gameplay. Along with the the unique gameplay twists as mentioned earlier. It's a must play for any fan of the survival horror genre.

Dino Crisis 2 on the other hand ditches the survival horror style and goes for an action feel. Doing a total 180 from what was established in the original. You're able to run and shoot and a main mechanic of the game is building a combo meter to earn more points so you can buy weapons/ammo/and health. Despite the tonal change, the game is blast to play and i've said before that I equate it to a platinum game made before their time.

With these titles being on sale. I'm hoping some more people get in on these classics and see why many such as myself hold them so highly as being the best Dinosaur games even to this day. Even almost 20 years later.

I'd buy them but I don't want to create another american account just to purchase them. Capcom why those are not available in Europe.

I literally just added them to the PSN wishlist of my US account yesterday after getting two other US-only PS1 classics (Chrono Cross and Parasite Eve) when they were on sale.

Will definitely be buying both, cheers for the heads-up.

I've never really thought about it till now, but Capcom really was doing the Ubisoft thing back at this time. Every game was Resident Evil, like every Ubi game is AssCreed's towers. Dino Crisis, Onimusha, DMC1... It's a better formula for sure, but still pretty templated (if that's a word).

Personally, I think this was the weakest of the bunch. The PS1's real time 3D was just not up to snuff with the RE game design, and they were wise to revert to prerendered fo the sequel, but it also basically become a straight action game with it, which was disappointing. Never played the Xbox one though.

So I'm going to add a few reasons why Dino Crisis 1 & 2 are worth checking out if you're a person who knows very little about them, but happen to know about Resident Evil.

Dino Crisis 1 is essentially what it's always described as, a Resident Evil game with dinosaurs. It was made by a lot of the same people who made Resident Evil 1 & REmake, including of course being directed by Shinji Mikami. It plays like a Resident Evil game essentially, but with some key differences. Your standard zombie is replaced with velociraptors, who are not only pretty fast but unlike zombies raptors far more commonly know how to use doors and can follow you through a few rooms before giving up chase. There's a bleeding mechanic in the game (which was actually planned for Resident Evil 1.5 but was ultimately cut) which makes you bleed after taking certain types of damage from attacks, which leads a blood trail that dinosaurs can follow. The game has a lot of stand-out moments, and I think has some of the best 'fun' puzzles I've ever experienced in a horror game. There's a couple puzzles I'm especially fond of, one being a puzzle that has multiple possible solutions but lets you kind of change the layout of this one room to make it easier or harder for yourself, and you can decide which one works best for you (which it's rare to have puzzles directly impact and allow you strategy in the survival gameplay part). I think it's on-par with the quality of the classic Resident Evils, and definitely worth checking out if you're a RE fan.

Dino Crisis 2 is an entirely different beast. It's basically the precursor to the Mercenaries Mode in Resident Evil games from RE4 onward... Except in a campaign format. Each time you pass through a room you kill dinosaurs to keep a combo going, and the time taken, combo achieved, enemies killed, etc., effect your score and when you go through the door opening animation to the next room you get scored, a letter rank, and receive points from your performance. Points are used to buy and upgrade weapons, items, abilities, and other things from a shop system you use. Dino Crisis 2 also features a sort of open world design between a few different islands you can visit, taking a submarine to go from island to island (which sometimes randomly triggers a on-rail shooting segment thing where you can get even more points for playing). The game isn't all about the action though, it still has puzzles (and better yet, most puzzles now being implemented into gameplay somehow rather than these separate cut-off obstacles only loosely present in themselves), set-piece moments, big changes in pace (like this one bit where you go to this underwater facility in a diving suit), Metroidvania elements as you unlock access to more parts of these islands, and a great enemy variety with different strategies and a lot of dinosaurs. It's very fun, and when you beat the game you unlock this 'virtual arena' mode with challenges you can do and local multiplayer where you can play as dinosaurs to complete objectives and compete against other dinosaurs.

Both games are often underlooked, but quite good.

These games were the shit back in the day. Now not so much, but I still have fun playing them every once in a while. I own both on PS1 and will never get rid of them due to nostalgia.

Lol wait a minute what's the deal with me not being able to buy these games on my Vita in the UK? I have next to no knowledge of this franchise so any explanation would be nice.

I own them but at the time only had a Vita to play them on which if I remember made quick turning terrible to do without the second shoulder buttons. I can always hook up the PS3 now though.

I might be wrong though. I just remember having trouble at the time doing something.

Only idea I have is that the Capcom Europe branch ran into trouble with trademarks or licensing around DC.
Though it's odd that it affects both EU and AU. I doubt it's the rating since they got around that with the Resident Evil series.

Not only do I have these bad boys, I replay them both at least once a year.

I suggest a ban for anyone who can't provide proof of purchase on their PSN account, Jawmuncher

So am I to understand that it has never released over here (and in AU) even back in the day? No wonder I feel so out of the loop whenever this franchise is brought up lol.

Now if you please could tell me the code for the computer in the room that's after this thing...

Because otherwise I'll be stuck forever (and thus can never play the second lol)

It's totally possible I missed stuff because that's like I actually play, I can't do boarders and this looks good to me - though I guess at least 10% of the games screen real estate are completely lost on me lol.

I loooooooove fighting the trex, I hope he comes back! Maybe I already killed him, that would suck!

Dino Crisis 2's arcade approach was absolutely fantastic and dear lord it's so unique and probably one of my favourite PS1 games. I heavily rate it over 1 but both are good games.

Also 2 has battle mode, which was certainly.... Interesting.

I legit can't get past the tank controls. Hate, hate, hate them. This is probably why I never got into early RE, either.

I own them. I tried. But nope. :(

a.k.a. please help me fund DC3.

I have great memories of DC1, I wouldn't mind a reboot of the series.

I'd be interested if Sony Capcom ever bothered to bring the games to the UK PS Store.

And if they worked on PS4...

Still grumpy that these never came to the UK PSN store. *grumble*

Dino Crisis is amazing. I imported the shit out of it when it came out in Japan. It was a little hard playing through it in Japanese but it was really exciting... Loved it.

Oh no, they did release over there back in the day. Just something prevented them from rereleasing on PSN.

What if I have both games physically on PS1?

I suggest ERA Gold Membership. :D

That said, the games are still kind of tempting me at this price for the convenience of having them on my Vita....decisions.

Psh, I still have my launch copies on PS1. With that sweet demo of Resident Evil 3!

Also, I have a Dino Crisis watch. which reminds me that it's always Dino Crisis time.

Do you even have that Jaw!? Hmmm!?

I love DC2's replayability. I think the game was able to perfectly mix RE-style exploration with action-arcade gameplay.

DC2 is the pinnacle for me. So awesome, can't tell how many times I played it, even on an emulator.

Unfortunately I only own the first one for the PS1 (I mean not digital) so I guess I jump in for DC2 here, 3$ is a no-brainer.

Dino Crisis 2 is pretty much the predecessor to modern Mercenaries mode in Resident Evil, even more than the Mercs mode in 3 was. Initially I was bummed that it wasn't just Resident Evil with Dinosaurs again, but I grew to love that gameplay system.
