Get a battery replacement on the cheap and power through to the X2. You can even buy it online and replace it yourself if you're handy.

Other than that and than to buy a cheap used phone to power through as well I'd say get an X and move on. You made it to 2018 with a 5s. You won't die with an iPhone X all the way to 2019 or 2020. Or even 2021. The biggest advancements are already there I believe (the display and Face ID). The star of 2018 will be basically the Plus size.

Well, it's not just the battery life. That's my main issue, but it's not the only one. The phone's incredibly frustrating to use.

I'm trying to update a new iPhone X straight out of the box to the latest iOS, but I think something's wrong. The phone is activated and connected to wi-fi. When I go to software update, it gets stuck on "checking for update" until it errors. It doesn't ever complete. So I tried the iTunes route and again it tries to contact the apple server but then errors and unable to connect to the servers. Think it's busted?

Try doing a restore through iTunes instead of just an update, it'll nuke the whole thing and update it at the same time. That being said if iTunes also can't reach the Apple server to do the wired update it's unlikely the phone is the issue

Just got myself a mint 256GB X and trading it to a friend for his flawless 64GB X on 11.1.2 :D

Feels great to be back on iOS after a month or two with the S8 (yuck).

Looking to buy a saddle brown Apple Leather case. Anyone have any experience with it and can tell me how the color fades over time?

It ages quite nicely to a darkish brown colour. The button colour doesn't really match the case when its new but after the case has darkened they match up much better.

I can't deal with my 5s anymore. It's so fucking slow and laggy, and the battery is a mess. Whenever I leave the house, I have to put it into power saving mode. And if I intend to actually use it, I have to take a charger with me anyway. It drains like crazy. And I'm talking exclusively about normal usage, no videos or gaming or anything like that.

The thing is, I originally planned to wait for the successor to the X to they could iron out some kinks. But I can't keep my 5s yet another six months. I'm just sick of it. So..
1) I could get the X now and the X2 in Fall. No, I'm not gonna spend that much money.
2) I could get a different model now (6, 7, 8) and the X2 in Fall. Well, it's still a lot of money.. not sure about that.
3) I could get the X now and skip the X2.
4) Android.

I'm tending towards option 3, but I'm gonna be really pissed if the X2 turns out to be vastly improved in some way (e.g. Face ID). Anyone in the same boat?

I'd go with option 3 if I were you, X is a perfectly capable phone and I don't feel like there's many "kinks" to work out. From the rumors we have so far, it seems like the main focus for Apple this year is a bigger Plus-sized model and a cheaper non-OLED version of the X (to replace the 8).

I'm guessing it'll be a modest upgrade, the usual faster CPU and camera improvements etc. If the X2 does end up being a major leap though, you could always sell your X. iPhones have great resale value.

Oh thank goodness the restoring it through iTunes method worked! It's reinstalling the iOS with the latest version now. Thanks for the tip!

So I'm up for an upgrade, and Sprint is offering me the iPhone X with a $20/mo fee, as opposed to the 8/8+, which is $34/$37. From users of the iPhone X, is it worth it to just get the 10, or should I spend more for the 8/8 Plus?

It's a no brainer to just go with the X. There is little to no reason to go with the 8/8+ unless you really want Touch ID + Home Button.

So for whatever reason I found the X's screen getting more scratches than any other smartphone I've had. I bought a cover for it, which works nice, but it's weird that I've only had it for a month or two and there's already more scratches than my 6 or my old Galaxy ever received on their screens.

Why not put a tempered glass screen protector on it?

Is there any way to get rid of the flashlight on the lock screen.
I regularly turn it on when slipping the phone in my pocket.

In all the years of having an iPhone I have used the flashlight maybe five times, not sure who could possibly need it all the time...

Are you pushing down on the screen when putting it in your pocket? It needs to be pressed like a button, just tapping it won't work.

In any case no there's no way to turn it off

Anyone have the issue where they add a picture/image to a text then hit send and it vanishes and doesn't even show that it sent the image. So i have to send it again
Yes this happens to me every single day. I send a lot of media to friends so it's actually maddening.

i've been searching all over the internet looking for solutions and can't find anything. I don't know if it's an icloud photos thing since I have mine on optimized or if it's just a system wide bug.

My text box also regularly disappears. imessage on this almost ruins the experience.

Oh I meant to text you, I'm almost positive it's an iCloud photos bug because it only happens to me immediately after I've taken a picture. I have it set to download originals but it's still uploading at that time

I see Apple still hasn't figured out cloud services at all. It's been getting incrementally better though. Google has a huge start ahead (they've even using their servers) so it's to be expected.

Having this same issue as well, it's really irritating and something I've never dealt with before from a smartphone. In low light situations or directly under light the phone screen looks pretty bad.

I've had the same issue. "Most scratch resistant glass ever" is total BS.

Yep. The screen is awful when it comes to scratch protection. Never had a scratch on a screen before. Any way to repair it without replacing?

I put a glass screen protector on my iPhone X, which I usually didn't do on past iPhones. A little glad I did.

I have a Speck case on it as well and when I took it off to clean out dust I didn't see any scratches on the steel sides.

I don't have a screen protector on mine so I have some really minor scratches on the screen. I have AppleCare so I'm not too concerned.

Don't regret switching from OnePlus to iPhone but I miss the OnePlus cases, particular the rosewood.

Yeah, I'm rocking my X completely naked too. Feel like I might be playing with fire though, if it drops.

No scratches at all, but perhaps I should get a screen protector. Look into that now.

Really love the phone. It's just gorgeous and fun to use, and lightening fast.

For AppleCare it covers two cases of accidentally damage, does anyone know how that works for both sides of the phone? Would fixing the back and front count for two cases of damage or could it be two cases of damage for each side?

It depends on the damage. If it's just the front glass, they'll replace just that for $29 (or regional equivalent). If it's the back glass, that can't be repaired on it's own, so the whole phone gets replaced for $99. If both glass breaks, then the whole phone has to be replaced for the back glass anyway and that counts as one incident

So do we think they will add a new unlock option in the future? Maybe with iOS 12?

I kinda want my phone to automatically go to the home screen as soon as it recognizes my face.

Hopefully but I doubt it. If you're still on 11.1.2 or lower you can jailbreak and install a tweak that does this. It will unlock automatically unless you have notifications or there is media playing.

There is a solid pink line running down the right side of the screen on my phone, obviously it seems that there is an issue with the display do you think that this will be covered by apples limited repair warranty or am I screwed for not getting AppleCare?

Almost bit today but decided to go with an 8 Plus for now, then trade it for the X Plus or whatever it'll be called in Sept.

On that note: is there an ERA thread for non-X iPhones?

Sounds like a warranty thing to me but can you post a picture?

A huge QOL recommendation I can make (if you can avoid feeing like an old geezer) is to up the system font size just by one tick. I don't even have bad eyes but it makes the OS look so much crisper! It doesn't render webpages differently either so you don't have to worry about zooming out all the time when you don't mind the content to screen size ratio.

I played with an X for a few minutes today. I have mixed feelings about it. The screen's pretty nice, of course, especially compared to my 5s' screen. But not being able to open Control Center while using the phone with one hand is a big deal to me, as I use my phone single-handedly rather often. That's gonna be frustrating as hell for me.
The notch looks pretty dumb, especially in landscape mode.
Not sure which color to get. The back sides of both versions are ugly as shit.

My manager's iPhone X was flaking chrome off the buttons. He's getting a free replacement. I hope mine starts doing that later this year.

You can open control center with one hand but it's two swipes. Make sure Reachability is on in settings and then swipe down on the home/menu bar thing. Once the screen content moves down, swipe down on the top-right of the moved-down content where the wifi/signal/battery icon are. That'll bring down control center. :)
