I love fast (gorey) shooters with outlandish creatures to fight and a set of 10 or so unique weapons that you can switch between on the fly. Unfortunately I can't handle the build engine or games like old Doom and Wolfenstein, because of simulation sickness within 10 minutes of booting them up, so I have to pass on games like Ion Maiden even though they appeal to me. :(

Thanks for playing DUSK and AMID EVIL guys - they just approved my account. I'm a real restera boi now.

Be sure to hop into Discord.gg/NewBlood if you wanna get @ us 1v1 and get the latest updates.

Excellent work on both!
I grabbed Amid Evil last night and whilst I'm really enjoying it, it hasn't clicked quite like Dusk did.

I'm finding the size of the weapons to be quite off-putting, especially the axe. It takes up most of the right hand of the screen and is messing with my perception of screen size. I usually play with an FOV of 90ish but changing it didn't seem to affect the nauseous feeling.

The other being the reliance on 'platforming' or the intricacies of terrain traversal. I am trying to play with a steam pad though so it's my own fault!

I can't remember which thread it was recommended in, but I wanna give a shout-out to The Adventures of Square. It's basically the gameplay of Doom with the aesthetics of Commander Keen, and it's a lot more fun than I expected it to be.

Whoever mentioned it earlier, thanks, I owe you one!

Compound rules but probably doesn't count:

I'm definitely sold on Ion Maiden after the preview and I'm looking forward to Dusk.

People have always been trying so I don't see a renaissance, especially a while ago with all those wannabes with procedural levels, loot and shit, we just happened to finally get a handful that did it right starting with the best of them, DUSK.
I'm and looking forward to Dusk.
Erm, why aren't you playing it? The only thing early access really lacks is the third episode. The episodes are stand alone like the handful you can choose when starting Doom, Blood or whatever classic FPS. It's polished and ace.

Descent 1 and 2 are still the best in their genre. I'll be checking out Dusk and Amid Evil soon. Already played Ion Maiden and it's off to a great start. I think Hellbound is trying to capture the whole retro thing, too.

a big THANK YOU to everyone in the thread for revealing a lot of hidden gems for me. I grew up playing Quake/Doom/Shadow Warrior/Blood etc and needed old school FPS games back in my life! Thank you!

Just wanted to say welcome Dave to ERA! Its good to have some classic FPS minded developers around here.

I would love if Q&ERA would do a feature on New Blood, ill be sure to ask questions!

Welcome!

I think I'm going to start with overload. I've tried every descent revival under the sun trying to scratch that itch.

I usually prefer to play things all in one go, even if it's cleanly split out like a classic FPS.

I've been in a gaming funk the past few months, having played little of new or recently acquired games (mostly via bundles and deep sales). Usually when this happens I just go back to playing random spurts of Heretic, Hexen, Doom 1+2, Blood, etc. Those games are like comfort food for me. Maybe an old school FPS renaissance will get me back to playing some newer games. Many of these look really great and are on the wishlist for now.

This comes hand in hand with the Fifth generation revival we've been seeing in other genres.
Ever since Megaman 9 I've been waiting for this era to happen and now that we're here I'm super excited.
A little more 3D platformers wouldn't hurt though...

I dunno how i feel about this. I love how the games play but i don't really want that aesthetic again. It does not need to be AAA but a little different than the old stuff would be great. Some of these do seem to add something new.

How good of a pc do I need to run both Dusk and Ion Maiden?

I got the Turok 1 remaster but the game frame rate was very choppy so I don't want to risk getting them if the games won't run as good. I will need to get me a better PC someday.

I can't really speak for Ion Maiden but DUSK we optimized to run at 144fps on a pretty low spec machine. Worst case scenario? Try them and refund if you can't run em. We won't be mad at ya.

This is nice and all but where is my multiplayer arena renaissance?

There's actually a whole bunch of MP arena FPS including our own DUSKWorld and they're mostly all dedd (small playerbase) because nobody plays stripped down arena FPS anymore. And it's not that the games aren't good. They're all REALLY good. There's just not enough people interested in playing them continually. Unreal Tournament, Toxikk, Reflex, Warsow, Quake Live, and more. The only way to play them is to join a community. The games are there just don't expect them to ever be big or populated or to ever find a game easily without making an effort!

Wow, surprised we don't have STRAFE posted yet! I know it's out but this is very worth mentioning

wasn't this a bit of a dud? just seems like 100s of brainless AI enemies swarming you at once. i don't think i've seen any good impressions

might be okay in its own terms but i got the impression its just an aesthetic callback

I know. These games are all dead and honestly I don't really care to join a community. All i want is to be able to hop in a random game without too much hassle.
These days I have to play orangewatch even if I can't stand the game anymore, since I don't know what else to play. I'm hurting myself.

I can usually get a game in Reflex. There's rarely more than a handful of people playing, but it isn't often I've jumped in and there wasn't someone to play with.

The crucial element that has been missing from these sorts of games have been the hand-crafted, intricate and sprawling level design. So far I haven't seen nearly enough retro style FPS try to truly dig into that.

Ion Maiden too.

Hell even the ROTT 2013 reboot we all worked on. As buggy and performance heavy as it might be (it was our first game)

I can only speak for myself and kind of for the 3DR guys but old school level design is what we missed most about these games. Not that we have anything against Roguelike FPS it's just not our thing. We like secrets and monster closets and key cards and such.

isn't this one of the key selling features for a few of these games? Maybe Ion Maiden? Haven't looked into in detail.
