Did they ever release Sweet Home in English or is that some fan translation in your first post?

If you liked the first one you're going to love the remake.
I'm glad you're not playing one after the other as well. It's good to put some time inbetween those two.

On another note, if I were you I'd skip 3, Code Veronica, Zero and Revelations. It's not necessarily because they're bad games(Well Revelations kind of sucks) but because the formula for those games will get tiring by the time you get to 3. It's the same but not as good. It'll feel like you're playing the same old shit over and over and I really wouldn't want you to get discouraged from the rest of the series.

This is an awful post. RE3 has the best mechanics in the entire series.

Don't skip any OP.

Eh, sometimes I dream of doing the same thing (They are also very short games), but I know I'd get bored around RE3. Have fun, they are certainly worth.

I replayed them all in a row before 7 came out and I got all the way up to 6 before I finally got bored (I did drop Outbreak but that was only due to the god awful AI pissing me off)

You've forgot about Resident evil Gaiden on Gameboy Color, the gameplay is pretty average to poor, but that music is spooky and scary as hell for a portable format like that, i really like the atmosphere of this entry.

I actually mentioned in the OP that I'm kinda interested in that one, if only because the idea of 2D Resident Evil on an 8 bit system intrigues me and I know the ship setting was used in Revelations.

Did they ever release Sweet Home in English or is that some fan translation in your first post?

It's a fan translation, there are two existing ones - an older one by a group called Gaijin Productions and another newer one by TheSiege. The new one seems to be slightly better but I played the Gaijin Productions one. I do recommend giving either of them a go.

Why? Ive never played Zero and plan on playing Remake and 0 at some point in the future.

The gameplay is unfortunately not very good due to the mechanics change. One of the thing I dislike is how the developer scrapped the item box and in return, you and your partner can carry items together and you can drop and retrieve items.

So as you venture deeper you have to constantly run back and forth to fetch the items.

haha sorry just saw it, yeah also the story is actualy a lot better then a lot of other resident evil game IMO, also 2 important returning characters soo. But just be prepare for a real survival game, you can get stuck if you are really not carefull with ammo and healing item. I remember it to be pretty challenging overall because thing can get ugly fast if you don't take your time to plan a attack. Limited save spot don't help if you are doing backtracking.

This is exciting and I'll follow your journey gladly. :D
Resident Evil is such an amazing franchise...I'm really thinking about doing this too. I reckon playing RE1 without the Nostlagia factor can be a little tiresome, but the fact you're having fun with it is pretty damn amazing. I was like 10 years old, when I played RE and RE2 and those were some of the most unforgettable experiences of my gaming life.

I can't wait for REmake2!

Oh, and my RE list:
RE2
REmake/1
RE4
CV
RE3
Outbreak
RE0
RE5
Revelations2
RE6

The first 3 are pretty much on the same level for me. Oh, and I still haven't played RE7.

One of the best gaming series of all time, and yeah, you can't go wrong with the first three.

My series rank:
(1) Resident Evil 2
(2) Resident Evil 4
(3) REmake
(4) Resident Evil 3
(5) Resident Evil 7
(6) Resident Evil 5
(7) Resident Evil 6
(8) Resident Evil: CV
(9) Resident Evil: 0
(10) Revelations (Haven't played 2)

Also, playing the series in chronological order is the best way to go, IMO.

Kudos to the OP.

Release order is the only way to play a game series. Gameplay evolution is way more important than learning some bullshit retcon about how Rebecca Chambers had an epic train adventure before the events at the Spencer mansion.

Super happy that the OP isn't just whining about tank controls and dismisses them as an issue. You totally made my day.

I want to play through so many series after my move when I'll have a dedicated recording area. Awesome idea.

i played the first one recently (remake version) and had fun, but don't think i want to play another one in a few years

playing them all in a row must be very exhausting

i couldn't deal with all the inventory management

Oh btw OP, since you mention the aiming being an issue, which version of RE1 are you playing?

The game originally had a lock-on feature, but they removed it from the western localisation. They later restored it with the Director's Cut. I'm gonna say, the game doesn't feel as good to play without it.

I am playing the OG version - no lock-on, no arranged mode, no dual shock support, nothin', lol. I thought about the Director's Cut version but I wanted to try the original because it's the version I played a little bit of years ago. (I only explored the first and second floors of the mansion when I first played RE1 back in the day before getting stuck, scared and putting it aside for other games.) Wanted to see if I'm able to play it better now, and it turns out I am. The aiming is tricky- I died a bunch of times due to Hunters last night - but it feels good to get those accurate shots.

I might give some videos of the Director's Cut a watch later to check out the differences.

Oh wow thanks guys. It seems like it's a step back a little bit from remake which is something I played off and on, on a friends GC when it released so I want to return to it as I don't remember it much. I love threads like these. The backtracking sounds annoying as fuck.

So, I made some progress last night and now I'm in the catacombs, near the end of the game! Here's some updates on what happened...a few more screens are on my Twitter.

  • The first time I fought that big snake Yawn, I seemed to recall reading that I'd have to fight him more than once over the course of the game, so I just ran in, grabbed the items at the back of the room, and ran out. Sure enough, he popped up back again when I was re-exploring the mansion and surprised me by sliding out of the fireplace. I didn't expect this at all! It took me a bunch of tries to beat him because he kept blocking the walls of the room and chomping me, and I was already low on health. I finally ran out and resupplied at the nearby weapon room, where Barry had left me ammo. Thank goodness for Acid Rounds - only a few shots and Yawn was dead. I was all like, "Take that, you shit!"
DYS7UiqVoAAj8ES.jpg

DYS7VEDVMAEvx_i.jpg

DYS7Wo5VoAA-pt6.jpg

  • Afterwards I went to explore the catacombs with Barry. I'd seen it mentioned online that this was where good/bad ending decisions started coming into play. I did wait for him to drop me the rope and went ahead first instead of asking him to take the lead.
  • The catacombs is probably the one section where the fixed camera angles confused me and the map wasn't very useful. Had to do some head scratching to figure out my bearings, and I think the fact that each screen was so dark didn't help much.
DYS7pr6UQAAnLY1.jpg

DYS8BvwX4AEorrl.jpg

  • As soon as I saw the big rock blocking the passageway, I was like... "This is some real Lara Croft/Indiana Jones type stuff here." Sure enough... (I had to repeat this section twice because I got stuck on a wall the first time. I was like, C'MON JILL)
DYS8OjzW4AAoXd9.jpg

  • Unlike Yawn, I didn't have much trouble with the Black Widow spider boss since I had the Colt Python. Once I got the positioning right, it only took three shots. I found it a little annoying that you couldn't blast apart the webs to the door with a gun, since I didn't wanna pick up the Combat Knife and add more clunk to my inventory.
DYS8jfrU8AEAzFy.jpg

DYS8i2dVMAoUw8L.jpg

So right now I've got the Colt, the MO Disk and I'm close to the Umbrella Labs. I've got the Doom Book and the Crank in my inventory and might be able to make it to the end of the game after another session! Looking forward to it.

As an aside, someone referred me to this - a site where people have actually tracked down and interviewed the actors who starred in the games' goofy FMV intro. Thought it was really funny reading about how the guy who played Chris rolled around in the dirt to make himself look more unkempt for the shoot. I kinda wanna read an interview with the voice actors as well and learn what it was like doing these lines - I imagine the voice direction couldn't have been that great and they read everything out of order, which is why each bit of dialogue sounds so stilted. (In a good way, I enjoy the B-movie cheese.)

Yo, thanks for that link, I had absolutely no idea they finally found any of the actors.

As for the voice actors, there is an old interview with Shinji Mikami about that at least.

http://www.bioflames.com/miscsection5.htm

Bio Hazard was really popular in the US and Europe as well, when you were developing it did you think at all about the foreign market?.

M: Well actually no, I didn't think about the foreign market, and because of that I've been told that the dialogue in the game was very strange (laughs) I've heard that a lot, I'll do it properly next time.

We thought it was a bit odd too, was the voice recorded in America?.

M: No, we recorded it in Japan.

But, American voice actors right?.

M: Well the voice actors were American, but the translator was Japanese, so people ended up thinking the dialogue was very unnatural. The other thing is that at first the actors didn't speak very clearly, the US version doesn't have subtitles on the screen like the Japanese one does, so in the English version if you miss hearing an important message, that's it, there is nothing you can do to fix that, we asked the voice actors to speak very slowly and clearly, but that ended up being a negative itself. since I am Japanese I didn't realize how strange it was for them to be speaking so slowly, I was disturbed when I finally noticed that much later.

RE0 also does this thing where you can save after you depleted your green herbs, and then if that happened to be right in front of a boss you're screwed because the green herbs don't respawn.

I am in the process of doing the same thing OP! I am really enjoying playing them all but I find myself taking breaks here and there. I really didn't have a problem with the tank controls. I played the games back in the day, but never beat them. I only beat 4/5 until I started this journey.
I still need to play 6/7 Rev 2 and Darkside Chronicles. I don't know how find a way to play Dead Aim and Outbreak 1/2, also not sure if it's necessary. Some people say yes and others no. I am interested in Gaiden and might give it a go when I am all done with the remaining games.

Below is how I felt about everything I played:
RE 0 - 7/10 - I enjoy it but it doesn't hold a candle to the original.
Resident Evil - 9/10 - All around classic.
RE Remake - 9/10 - Still maybe the best remake ever made. Perfect update to the classic without losing anything.
RE 2 - 8/10 - I really like it but I still enjoy the mansion more.
RE 3 - 7/10 - Enjoyed this the least out of the original PS trilogy. It has it's moments but it started to feel like a chore.
RE Code Veronica - 8/10 - I remember hearing all the flak on this game but I really liked it.
RE 4 - 10/10 Played this one 5 times now and still love it! My favorite RE experience.
RE 5 - 7/10 This did not hold up for me. I beat this back when it released and played it 3x in a row with my buddy.
RE REv 1 - 7/10 - At times I liked it and other times I really hated it. I played it on PS4 but I am blown away that this was on 3DS.
RE Operation Racoon City - 6/10 - Definitely of MEH. There were a few enjoyable moments throughout but overall it's just average.
RE Umbrella Chronicles - 6/10 - Was super excited to play this and get a rehash of the games I played. At times it was a blast, other times I was fighting against the controls. Played this on PS3 with the Move. My feelings on this pushed Darkside Chronicles to a later play.

The side stories have been hit or miss. I enjoy them at times and other times I question why I am bothering. I look forward to hearing your opinions on all of the games.

Anyone know if the RE2 N64 port was any good?

I still have my copy of it. It was technically impressive, to be sure, even just for the fact that they fit all the video from the game onto the cart.

But the character models are rendered in high res on the game, while the background images are half that resolution, which leads to a very weird effect.

Gamecube version is still top release of the game AFAICT

So I was too busy in the SoulCalibur VI Geralt reveal thread last night to play much, but I did advance a little father. In the Umbrella lab now.
  • I'm actually really low on ammo at the moment! I used all my Colt Python rounds and only have 6 bazooka shots left. It's because I kept running into the lab zombies (who REALLY remind me of the ReDeads in Zelda) and eliminating them. They seem to be some of the few enemies in the game that continuously respawn? Either way, I'm working hard to try to conserve ammo now.

DYX9H-hXcAAgRE2.jpg:large

  • I enjoyed this puzzle, though I totally overthought it. At first I didn't notice that you could simply move the bookshelf, hit a switch and see the English translation of the runes, so I was taking down notes and trying to translate them myself by guesswork. I figured out "TREE" and "APPLE" but was confused by "MAN" and "WOMAN." I thought it might be "EVE" and "ADAM" but I noticed there was an extra letter there. Then I pressed the switch, turned the room blue, and it all made sense.
DYX9Pp8WAAEUAoZ.jpg:large

DYX9QPfWsAAH2Xr.jpg:large

  • Got a kick hacking into the Umbrella computer network. I knew what the username and password were but I couldn't resist the urge to be very mature.
DYX92pWX4AAEJnR.jpg:large

DYX93TmX4AA5oyu.jpg:large

  • I really liked the little reveals that show the name of each enemy you've fought so far. Stuff like this would be unlockable lore entries that pop up after getting an early kill or finding a collectable in a modern game, but here it's woven into the natural flow of gameplay and helps add context to the strange mutations that you've fought so far. I think a large aspect of survival horror games is slowly becoming more and more equipped to deal with the threat that you're facing, both in weaponry and in knowledge. This is an example of the knowledge part.
DYX-D8fW4AA5uIH.jpg

I plan to finish the game next time, provided I don't get stuck on another block puzzle like this one.

This is one of my favourite game franchises. The only entries I haven't played to completion are Resident Evil 0, Code: Veronica, 6 and 7. I'm currently replaying them in chronological order, on PS4, albeit starting with Resident Evil Remake HD.

I just finished a "knife only" run as Chris for the first time to earn the 'CQC FTW' trophy. It brought back so many memories. The Spencer Mansion is such a genuinely, creepy environment to explore. The differences between the original game and the remake totally justify independent playthroughs, so I'm glad you've chosen to follow the release order, as opposed to beginning with the remake. Resident Evil is a series worth experiencing from the beginning, if only to appreciate its evolution. I'm watching this thread to read your impressions and follow your progress through the franchise. I wish I could experience it for the first time again.

I never understood why everyone thinks the controls are whack in the old games. What's throwing you off is the camera. The sudden change of angles. Aside from that those games control exactly like RE4.

I'm guessing it's because you press UP to move forward in the direction that your character is facing and not necessarily in the direction that UP would be from your perspective. That, the fact that you can't turn and move forward at the same time, and the inclusion of fixed camera angles probably throw a lot of people off, especially those who aren't used to other PS1 games that use the same control scheme. (Parasite Eve 2, the early Tomb Raiders)

It took me a few seconds to get acclimated but I haven't had much of a problem since, except when I'm trying to run away from enemies and get stuck on a wall.

I can understand why they implemented this sort of control scheme - it forces you to make very deliberate and careful movements, which fits in with the whole "survival" aspect of the series.

Plus the camera angles were very effective for a cinematic presentation back then and evoked suspense and an eerie feeling of being watched. Even though they make the controls feel less intuitive, it's one reason why games like REmake still hold up really well IMO.

I never had anything against tank controls, I actually still use it for REmake. I remember that thread on the old forum where people were arguing RE4 was not tank control and I thought it was weird how they hated it so much they convinced themselves that their favorite game isn't exactly that

I've also seen the reverse, people complain about MGS1's "shitty tank-controls." when it doesn't actually use them. My take-away from this is that people who complain about tank-controls are people who's judgement cannot be trusted.

The only mainstream I didn't play was Zero and 6. Are they worth trying at all?

I would recommend them both to you. I finished both, while Zero was like 10 years ago, I still remember liking it, despite its flaws like the damn monkeys, they really suck. But I liked Rebecca and Billy and the overall look and feel of the game.

Maybe you have seen me before here, but I am a huge fan of Resi 6, will always recommend that one to everyone :)
Fun game, if not perfect, I always have much fun with it, no matter how many times I play it.
And since you can get them both for PS4/Xbone, why not.

Nice OP, have fun. There are some ups and downs along the way but overall it's the greatest series ever.

May do a complete re-run myself in preparation for RE2make. But I've done one end of 2016, so I'm still quite fond of everything.

Top tier: RE1, Remake, RE2, RE4, RE7
Amazing: RE3, Code Veronica, RE5, RE 2
So so: RE Zero, Revelations
Bad: RE6

Great series overall, it should be very interesting to see what you think about the games as you go through them, seeing all the changes in mechanics and graphics. If I start playing a series that's new to me, I always try to start at the beginning. I did so with Panzer Dragoon recently. I've only ever played Saga and never really the original 2 games even though I own them, (how many people can say this :) ). So anyway I know Zwei is a huge step up from 1, but I started at 1 nonthless and it's just damn interesting to see what they managed to accomplish on the Saturn with the means they had. That makes Zwei all the more impressive imo.

But anyway this is about RE, not PD. Very interested to see what your opinions are gonna be, keep it up!

Starting with the original is a good idea, you get a sense of a big tech leap going from RE1 to 2.

I did the same as you a while back but only up until RE4. Had never played the earlier classics.

Tbh I really did not like RE1. It was such an ordeal to get through and had some very stupid cryptic requirements to trigger the final boss which I hated. But RE2 was brilliant. Have since played the REmake on PS4 which is the best of the lot (excepting RE4 which is one of the best of all time)

What's funny for me is I tried out the so called modern controls in the remastered REmake and camera angle changes messed with my head way more with that system then with tank. I also struggle with the first Devil May Cry because of that.

Oh hey, I just found this thread and am coincidentally playing some Resident Evil games as well. The RE2 Board Game on Kickstarter made me remember that when I played RE2 like 15 years ago I did Leon A and then went straight to RE3. So I finally went back and played it Claire A Leon B just to see it the right way. Boy am I glad I did that. I won't say anything since the OP is on RE1 still but I decided to and am currently playing RE3, which I played and remember the plot but not the moment to moment stuff. After this, I never played RE0 or Code Veronica so I plan on getting to them very shortly after.

Woah, the RE2 board game looks cool, I just checked out the Kickstarter page. It hasn't been released yet, right? I really enjoy board games and pen and paper RPGs and as I've been playing RE1 I keep thinking of ways the setting could be adapted to a tabletop game.

Even though the graphics haven't aged well, I still think the RE1 mansion has a really oppressive atmosphere. Maybe it's the nostalgia speaking, but in a way it's more scary than the remake in that regard.

I'm actually just now replaying through the entire franchise (while also playing a couple for the first time as well). I always adored the franchise despite having missed a few of the key games in it.

I had previously already played RE1, Re:Make, RE0, RE4, RE5, and RE7.
It could be recency bias, but RE7 played in the PSVR is hands down my favorite still, it was an incredible experience. But RE4 and Re:Make are incredible games and I would never fault anyone for having them as their favorites either.

I just finished up with RE2 for the first time and I'm in the middle of RE3.

RE2 was fantastic, I'd say just as good if not better in some ways than RE1.

RE3 I'm not sure how to feel about, I'm still enjoying it a lot, but it feels a bit more unfair overall in it's difficult due to Nemesis himself and the sheer number of enemies thrown at you at times. I also don't really enjoy having to decide for myself what ammo I make with the bullet loader. Also Raccoon City isn't quite as easy to memorize for me.

I played a bit of RE6, and honestly I'm kind of eager to get back to it with the new re-release and play it with a friend, I feel I might enjoy it more that way.

Anyone know if Code Veronica X and both Revelation games are worth playing?
