If you liked the first one you're going to love the remake.
I'm glad you're not playing one after the other as well. It's good to put some time inbetween those two.
On another note, if I were you I'd skip 3, Code Veronica, Zero and Revelations. It's not necessarily because they're bad games(Well Revelations kind of sucks) but because the formula for those games will get tiring by the time you get to 3. It's the same but not as good. It'll feel like you're playing the same old shit over and over and I really wouldn't want you to get discouraged from the rest of the series.
Eh, sometimes I dream of doing the same thing (They are also very short games), but I know I'd get bored around RE3. Have fun, they are certainly worth.
You've forgot about Resident evil Gaiden on Gameboy Color, the gameplay is pretty average to poor, but that music is spooky and scary as hell for a portable format like that, i really like the atmosphere of this entry.
Did they ever release Sweet Home in English or is that some fan translation in your first post?
Why? Ive never played Zero and plan on playing Remake and 0 at some point in the future.
I actually mentioned in the OP that I'm kinda interested in that one, if only because the idea of 2D Resident Evil on an 8 bit system intrigues me and I know the ship setting was used in Revelations.
It's a fan translation, there are two existing ones - an older one by a group called Gaijin Productions and another newer one by TheSiege. The new one seems to be slightly better but I played the Gaijin Productions one. I do recommend giving either of them a go.

This is awful advice. OP, if you're gonna skip any, make it 4, 5 and 6.If you liked the first one you're going to love the remake.

This is exciting and I'll follow your journey gladly. :D
Resident Evil is such an amazing franchise...I'm really thinking about doing this too. I reckon playing RE1 without the Nostlagia factor can be a little tiresome, but the fact you're having fun with it is pretty damn amazing. I was like 10 years old, when I played RE and RE2 and those were some of the most unforgettable experiences of my gaming life.
I can't wait for REmake2!
Oh, and my RE list:
RE2
REmake/1
RE4
CV
RE3
Outbreak
RE0
RE5
Revelations2
RE6
The first 3 are pretty much on the same level for me. Oh, and I still haven't played RE7.
Oh btw OP, since you mention the aiming being an issue, which version of RE1 are you playing?
The game originally had a lock-on feature, but they removed it from the western localisation. They later restored it with the Director's Cut. I'm gonna say, the game doesn't feel as good to play without it.
Oh wow thanks guys. It seems like it's a step back a little bit from remake which is something I played off and on, on a friends GC when it released so I want to return to it as I don't remember it much. I love threads like these. The backtracking sounds annoying as fuck. The gameplay is unfortunately not very good due to the mechanics change. One of the thing I dislike is how the developer scrapped the item box and in return, you and your partner can carry items together and you can drop and retrieve items.
So as you venture deeper you have to constantly run back and forth to fetch the items.
Bio Hazard was really popular in the US and Europe as well, when you were developing it did you think at all about the foreign market?.
M: Well actually no, I didn't think about the foreign market, and because of that I've been told that the dialogue in the game was very strange (laughs) I've heard that a lot, I'll do it properly next time.
We thought it was a bit odd too, was the voice recorded in America?.
M: No, we recorded it in Japan.
But, American voice actors right?.
M: Well the voice actors were American, but the translator was Japanese, so people ended up thinking the dialogue was very unnatural. The other thing is that at first the actors didn't speak very clearly, the US version doesn't have subtitles on the screen like the Japanese one does, so in the English version if you miss hearing an important message, that's it, there is nothing you can do to fix that, we asked the voice actors to speak very slowly and clearly, but that ended up being a negative itself. since I am Japanese I didn't realize how strange it was for them to be speaking so slowly, I was disturbed when I finally noticed that much later.
1. Resident Evil (Remake)
2. Resident Evil 2
3. Resident Evil 4
4. Resident Evil 7
Yo, thanks for that link, I had absolutely no idea they finally found any of the actors.
As for the voice actors, there is an old interview with Shinji Mikami about that at least.
http://www.bioflames.com/miscsection5.htm
My favorite bit is the translator's lack of pop culture knowledge. "George Romero's Dome of the Dead", lol. That interview's a real blast from the past, I like the bit at the end where he talks about the N64. Anyone know if the RE2 N64 port was any good?
I never understood why everyone thinks the controls are whack in the old games. What's throwing you off is the camera. The sudden change of angles. Aside from that those games control exactly like RE4.
I'm guessing it's because you press UP to move forward in the direction that your character is facing and not necessarily in the direction that UP would be from your perspective. That, the fact that you can't turn and move forward at the same time, and the inclusion of fixed camera angles probably throw a lot of people off, especially those who aren't used to other PS1 games that use the same control scheme. (Parasite Eve 2, the early Tomb Raiders)
It took me a few seconds to get acclimated but I haven't had much of a problem since, except when I'm trying to run away from enemies and get stuck on a wall.
I can understand why they implemented this sort of control scheme - it forces you to make very deliberate and careful movements, which fits in with the whole "survival" aspect of the series.
I've also seen the reverse, people complain about MGS1's "shitty tank-controls." when it doesn't actually use them. My take-away from this is that people who complain about tank-controls are people who's judgement cannot be trusted.I never had anything against tank controls, I actually still use it for REmake. I remember that thread on the old forum where people were arguing RE4 was not tank control and I thought it was weird how they hated it so much they convinced themselves that their favorite game isn't exactly that
The only mainstream I didn't play was Zero and 6. Are they worth trying at all?
What's funny for me is I tried out the so called modern controls in the remastered REmake and camera angle changes messed with my head way more with that system then with tank. I also struggle with the first Devil May Cry because of that.I never understood why everyone thinks the controls are whack in the old games. What's throwing you off is the camera. The sudden change of angles. Aside from that those games control exactly like RE4.
Oh hey, I just found this thread and am coincidentally playing some Resident Evil games as well. The RE2 Board Game on Kickstarter made me remember that when I played RE2 like 15 years ago I did Leon A and then went straight to RE3. So I finally went back and played it Claire A Leon B just to see it the right way. Boy am I glad I did that. I won't say anything since the OP is on RE1 still but I decided to and am currently playing RE3, which I played and remember the plot but not the moment to moment stuff. After this, I never played RE0 or Code Veronica so I plan on getting to them very shortly after.
Dreamcast version is better than GC. Has extra difficulty modes and bonus features.I still have my copy of it. It was technically impressive, to be sure, even just for the fact that they fit all the video from the game onto the cart.
But the character models are rendered in high res on the game, while the background images are half that resolution, which leads to a very weird effect.
Gamecube version is still top release of the game AFAICT
